Hi mike, You can't unmount the root partition of the booted system because its pretty critical to the health of your system. Instead what i would suggest is to boot a rescue floppy and run fsck from your booted disk. Note. Don't use a boot floppy which mounts your root partition as its root as it will defeat the purpose.
May i suggest you download the following two files http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-i386/2.2.26-2001-06-14/images-1.44/rescue.bin http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-i386/2.2.26-2001-06-14/images-1.44/root.bin which will boot a completely standalone environment and unless i'm mistaken the root image has fsck on it. You could also use any other rescue disk as long as it doesnt mount root. Linuxcare do an excellent rescue cd which fits on a bootable business card cd thingy.
