you're confusing "SurfTime" the billing package with "SurfPort" the
notmodems that BT install at exchanges to groom traffic onto their Colossus
IP network.

There are also "WebPort" modems which do a similar thing, but IIRC don't
require authentication a la BT Click, and cost less to the ISP.

yep, well they groom the IP traffic off the BT PSTN network as early as
possible (up here that's somewhere in Edinburgh IIRC, possibly South Gyle),
and onto Thus' own IP backbone.  This kind of thing insulates them from
SurfPort problems which can affect a myriad of ISPs in one fell swoop.
