Thanks for that Lawrence.

The idea of reinstalling it had occurred to me, but wanting to be more
pro-....well....doing things by configuration, I suppose I felt it was the
cheating way, even though it probably is the best way, too!!

Try reinstalling apache from yast. It may not replace your config files, but
it will at least leave a sane set of config files nearby. ( maybe
/etc/httpd/httpd.conf.SuSE or similar ). It should tell you what it has
done.
