Ok, so this is just my opinion. I hope that nobody on the list has a problem
with this, but I thought I would bring it to everyone's attention as it might
be a good topic for discussion.
I recently bought the new Get Up Kids and Error Type 11 EPs as well as
the new Six Going On Seven album. Listening to all three I noticed that all
were very 'user friendly' if you will. They all had at least one song (and
really in all cases more than one song) that I could see becoming a big
'hit.' The songs are very catchy and the producing is all very good (for all
Get Up Kids fans you know that all previous TGUK recordings have never been
very 'produced' in the sense that they sound like something that could be
played on MTV or something). I think that all of this is great. The music
on all three discs is incredible. Each band has made great strides in their
music. Comparing the new music of all three of these bands to their old
stuff, it is just so great. They have really all gone to a higher level
(this is NOT to say that any of the three's music was not great before). In
any case, and sorry if I'm rambling, what I'm trying to say is that I think
these bands have the potential to bring 'emo' music into the mainstream. I
think that is is obvious the boy bands can't last forever. Hip Hop will take
a backseat again, and emo (and variations of it) just might become the next
big thing. Now I know that I haven't mentioned Sunny Day in this until now,
but they do pertain. What I was thinking about is that SDRE, if this music
becomes mainstream, will probably be like the Sonic Youth of the Grunge era.
Sonic Youth were so influential in the careers of bands like Nirvana. Sunny
Day, obviously, have influenced tons of bands (including my own) to become a
part of the scene. I don't just mean that tons of bands have copied them,
though. They have made it okay to express true feelings through music in
such an incredible way. They have paved the way for years to come.
Well, I'm sorry to be so long, but it's just stuff I was thinking about
later!
