We are currently running our Rails App on EC2 in production, and as VPSs go,
I must say I really like it. Its relatively inexpensive for what you get
(1.7 GHz, 2 Gigs of ram for approximately $80/month, and much bigger servers
are available if you need them). Additionally, the ability to provision new
servers on demand is very useful for testing/staging and fast/free bandwidth
to S3 is great for backups (you still pay for storage).

All that being said, it is still a VPS, and a VPS with some quirks. If you
don't mind managing your own servers, I highly recommend it. As for me, I'm
a programmer, not a sysadmin, if I had it to do all over again, I'd probably
go with EngineYard for a standard Rails (or Merb) app. However, if you need
a lot of burst capacity, such as occassionally processing a lot of video, or
crunching large datasets, EC2 can be a great resource.

Bottom line, EC2 is a great VPS with a lot of perks (and virtually unlimited
capacity) if you don't mind/want to manage your own server(s). However, in
my opinion, its probably cheaper in the long run to outsource the server
management and let Ruby specialist focus on Ruby.
