Why? Why is it better than, say, vim/Emacs? Before TextMate, there was BBEdit, there's Xcode, there are Mac ports of vim and Emacs, etc. How, then, does TextMate fill a void?
Let's not call BBEdit a programmer's editor. Truth is, TM is the first editor on the Mac (other than vi & emacs) that could even remotely be considered a programmer's editor.
In the world at large, though, TM has a way to go. For working on a large scale project (like in my work), TM just isn't going to cut it. For that we need extraordinarily strong project (even system) wide tagging support (i.e. Slickedit which does exist on the Mac, but the UI as a whole is less than desirable, and it sure cannot be called affordable).
All of that said, I bounce between TM and vim on my Mac. Overall, IME, TM fits in with Rails development quite nicely.
