Re: [313] Beyer's homage to D

2000-06-03 Thread Jwan Allen
The Beyer's homage to the D, on Svek was lackluster prodection in my opinion.
Sure he threw in some chords, but the EP was just average overall. A quote from
a customer in the record store this sounds like 20 other records I have, so
I'll pass on this one.

Lido Hotel is a very good album, not the album of the year though. I vote for
either Christian Morganstern's Lydia ep (this record hasn't left my box) or the
extremely slept on Terreance Dixon on Tresor, a very good album that I never
hear anyone talk about.

theyve talked about too much techno
anyways i have something to talk about

is anyone into techno-trance?? NO!

I don't mean to sound juvenile..but fuck trance! that shit is some of the worst
music ever created by man!

trance=soulless

new records worth mentioning

anthony shakir's tracks for my mother (frictional) NICE BASSLINE!

marice fulton -life is sweet

rick wade -harmonie project (viva project)

recloose-absence of one (planet e)

steve o'sullivan top shelf dubs (mosaic)

charles webster - your life (inside track , the other 2 suck) peacefrog promo

hanni talk to god (headspace) not a new record but it still slams

g-man on episode

not to go on a rant but fuck the genre game. Tech-trance? What in the hell is
that, it sounds like someone is trying to legitamize bad music buy throwing
the word tech- in front of it. There should only be 2 catagories of music (i
know it's a pipe dream) . Good music and bad music. and it's up to you to
decide what's good and bad. But since I'm the one that's speaking right now.
Spicelab, oliver leib, and 85% records being released as tech-house = wack
shit. One could argue that their music isn't as bad as half shit coming out,
but it that doesn't make it any better. I didn't like their stuff back in the
day and I still don't like it today. But that's life I guess.

The prices for Axis 20 vary from 15.99 US (Sonic Groove) to 22.00 US
(planetxusa.com) . You should realize that record companies/dist. charge a set
price for their records. Each individual record store can charge whatever they
want for a record. Also aixs 20 is limited so a few stores that were able to
snag a copy or two, might be taxing heads for the hell of it.

Those samples have been buggin me for quite some time since i couldn't remember
the other record I owned with the same sample. So while listening to Howard
Stern this morning the answer popped in my head, Nick holder used the same
sample for Carnival on DNH or NRK If you purchaed the 'From within Album.
I'll double check that tonight, but i'm 99% sure that's the other track.

so yeah i did this mix last week just messing around with a small
stack of records i took with me to my mom's house where my tables

one shot with extremely limited selection, hence the 5 moodymann

some of the mixes between the disco records, but i dont really
care that much. its hard mixing 2 non-sequenced records together.

Re: (313) new lp on transmat ??

2003-12-05 Thread Jwan Allen
The last 2 Arnolds on transmat/fragile were stellar in my opinion (they never
leave my bag), the Rodenbush was lush disposable crap. It's one of those
records you forget what it sounds like the minute you pick up the needle. His
last release on immigrant was much far superior (granted I hear the transmat
tracks were over 2 years old before they were released).

i'm a fanboy of Detroit techno (aren't we all?) or true believer as shake
would like to call me. So I do look forward to each new release from some of my
favorite labels. But, as my record collection has reached a critical mass over
the years, I'm not expecting each new release to be the best thing since sliced
bread, if the latest release isn't that hot, I'll just keep playing the older
ones.

in the meantime Obi wan's recent faves from the D:

Theo Parrish True Cities ( Harmione Park ) good stuff, I have to play it at
+6 but that's cool w/ me.

Mr. De ' - Stretchin out -Wholnleeone is the track for me
the Martian - Pipe carrier - Stellar release

Mills see the light, - dtill wrapping my head around these, so far the is my
favorite.

classics that still kill it:

Ur Hardlife - classic
Shawn Rudiman - Evidence of life - sure he's my boy, but its a hot record
(check the new eleventh hour and technoiraudio, too (shameless plug))
Anthony Shakir - Tracks for my Father and Mother- two of my favorites from mr.
shakir
UR - codebreaker - classic
Mills - time machine 12 not worth $300 bucks, but i like it.

I could go one, but it's after 4 pm (est) so I should get back to some actual
work.

I would have to back up KJ on this one- certainly in terms of the
 last
6 or 7 Transmat records, the quality is not what I would call
earth-shattering so putting trust in the Big D is pretty risky these
days. I'm certainly not slating all the releases, just don't think
they are particularly amazing or particularly different from what
 else
is out there. I am a huge, huge Transmat fan from way back but it's
not a case of me wanting to hear a re-hash of Nude Photo or
 anything so
that's not my problem, just that the general quality threshold
 seems to
dropped dramatically since Time:Space and Aril Brikah

id argue that all day long. i havent heard the Rodenbush release,
but the only other releases since aril have been the john arnold
and john beltran (both of which were very very nice) and the
stephen browns, which were not classics, but still pretty high
quality stuff. transmat isnt my favorite label, and im certainly
not a derrick may fanboy, but overall i trust the guy's taste to
be at least decent and at best fantastic. deepartures in time is
my favorite techno record as well as possibly my favorite record
 ever.

(313) the warhol: JOHN ARNOLD

2003-12-11 Thread Jwan Allen

the warhol: Good Fridays

FRIDAY DECEMBER 12th 2003
THE ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM presents

a live performance by Detroit electronic nu jazz composer/dj
JOHN ARNOLD

touring in support of his acclaimed new UBIQUITY RECORDS CD/LP
Neighborhood Science

www.ubiquityrecords.com/john_arnold.html
www.ubiquityrecords.com/ur136.html

Over the past few years John Arnold has risen to public attention along with
a new wave of Detroit producers and artists. Neighborhood Science includes
appearances from some of those peers like keyboard maestro and vocalist Amp
Fiddler (of P-Funk All-stars and Genuine Records), vocalist and
multi-talented musician Ayro (Omoa music) and producer and vocalist Malik
Alstin (collaborator with Roy Davis jr). They just happen to be from around
the way, and helped shape the John Arnold sound on Neighborhood Science,
his debut album. My neighborhood is brimming with talent, we all live and
breathe music. I really wanted to present this scene on my record, because
it defines who I am, states Arnold.

Neighborhood Science is an album that works in a club as well as at home
but Arnold purposefully avoided making something more accessible for the
sake of sales. Multi-layered soulful tracks retain an electronic edge that
works on the dance floor and nods to the influence of dons of the Detroit
scene like Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin, and Derrick May. When I listen to
records for the first time it's as a DJ. I look for the tracks I can play
out first. If I like an artist because they make great dance music and then
they come out with a record that is far removed from this, I feel let down.
I have always felt that dancing is a big part of experiencing music. Once
people are dancing, they are open to anything you want to throw at them,
explains Arnold.

Within electronic music circles formally trained artists often struggle to
reconcile their academic backgrounds and the unconventional DIY ethos of
club culture, yet John Arnold's classical guitar education has expanded, not
limited, his imagination. I was able to make this whole record in my
bedroom with the help of some friends. And you have to understand how all
the instruments fit together and how to play them of course. The training
just gives me a wider pallet and understanding of music to work with. I
think having the experience of working and understanding different
instruments and music helped me produce a wide variety of sounds and
colors, says Arnold.

Carl Craig invited Arnold to perform his first-ever live electronic gig at
the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF), and Derrick May, who
picked up his Sparkle EP for Transmat Records' sister label, Fragile, asked
him back to perform in 2003. He's released a second Transmat EP titled Four
Minutes? has 2 singles out on Ubiquity, and jammed on records by fellow
Detroit acts John Beltran, the Detroit Escalator Co and Recloose.

Prior to John Arnold's live performance, local DJs John E. and Noah Nine
will perform.

All-Ages. Show starts promptly at 6pm. Ends at 10:00 pm.

$3 Cover.

Direct beat is done for the time being, so if you
find any records on that label you are lucky. i'm
not sure if the burden's will get back up and
running any time soon. I'm sure they are busy
with other projects at the moment. I still want
to know what happened to the wildplanet 12 what
was supposed to come out last year, i couldn't
bring myself to buy the detroit comes calling
album since i already owned the rest of the
tracks minus the wildplanet cut.

2002-05-10 Thread Jwan Allen
I asked Mike dearborn the same question last
july, when he was here to play in pittsburgh. He
mentioned then that he hadn't talked to skull in
over 2 years. The last 2 releases i remember are
the 2 DJAX records he did some time ago. Internet
server 2112 which is an excellent record, check
the chords on first track on the b - side,
lovely! And chronic symbiosis which was released
a year afterward! He released a record
domestically a year after that, but the title
escapes me at the moment.

it's already out. I emailed john about this

made, or something obscene like that. they gave
hardwax, most of them, and i think they gave mike

quite a few times and it's really good. but i
have yet to come across a copy myself. maybe i'll
get lucky this weekend and find it, before some

remix officially in the fall, but that version
won't have the blue dawn remix on the flip

can't wait to drop these the next time i play out. Keep it coming Tom, I need

 now:

Titonton Duvante - Explicit EP - (Neroli)

Almost Human John Tejada - From Here To There (Twisted Funk)

Titonton Tejada - Passing Through (Amalgama)

   (Nice Alex Attias mix too.)

Tejada - The Toiling Of Idle Hands (Immigrant)

(More techno than the above which are more 'broken'.)

Haven't heard the following properly so am not recommending 'em but ...

John Tejada Adrian Leviste - The Dot And The Line LP (Moods Grooves)

John Tejada Arian Leviste - Fairfax Sake LP (Playhouse)

(Either I'm seeing/remembering a typo or the collaborator is obviously
 the
same person as per the MGrelease, if Leviste is a real person at all.)

There is also a single 12 by the pair on Playhouse of a track not on the
 LP.

 Happy Friday.

 Per the recent discussion:

01 Philippe Cam - LFO Drive - Traum
This record is the Poo! Required purchase for all tehcno dj's in my opinion.
This track always sweetens up our live pa/dj performances and works well as the
third record in 3 table set. I've enjoyed some of Phillippe's other work, but
this track always hits that sweet spot with yours truly. Man I love that record!

RE: (313) Re: the most heard tracks/top tunes @ Movement

2004-06-04 Thread Jwan Allen
Agreed, Carl's remix of Ravers Suck our Sound is an essential tune. I'm glad
to finally have it on 12 after just about wearing out my version off a Colin
Dale's Outer Limit's vol 2.

The track I heard the most over the weekend was G-man Quo Vadis. No
complaints on my end since this record NEVER leaves my bag. During a late-night
rip session, fellow members of crew pointed out to me (while I was passed out)
that this record is fairly indiciative of the Jwan Allen Sound. So when we
heard Mike Huckaby drop this record during his fabulous set the next day, we
all lost it!

jw

ps full review/comments/opinions will be posted sometime next week. I'm still
to tired to go through it all over again. We already have our hotel rooms

The new 3 Chairs 3x12 is amazing. This LP is everything I thought the Rotating

track tomorrow, since the list seems to love every one of his posts;). Lets

another copy.

Here's how I rank this LP in comparison to the some of the other Detroit house
records released in the past few months.

1. 3 Chairs LP
2. Black Mahagoni LP
3. Rick Wade - Dark Ascensions
4. Deep Tansportation #2 Picture Disc
5. KDJ 16
6. Theo Parrish - Twin Cities
7. Omar S 002

9. Rotating Assembly Album Part 1

 But there are much more
sophisticated ways of achieving the same effect. The most
 effective are
the tracks which have a kind of build or holding off (before
 something
kicks in) which is hardly even noticable. Its like you hear it
unconsiously. You hear it with the body only. This seems to be a
 quality
more or less exclusive to techno. I'm thinking of something like
 the first
track on Kevin Saunderson's Xmix or Derrick May's remix of Praise
 (Inner
 City).

the 4th wave's electroluv on planet e kills me. its gotta be one
of the best 10 techno tunes ever. the way the strings and pads and
cymbals build and release tension is just superb, totally flawless
 execution.

Yes there is, regardless of what one thinks a lot is. I once worked
for the DUI office here in Pittsburgh (population including
surrounding counties a little over a million) and the year end fiscal
report would blow your mind. It's a multimillion dollar business, and
I mean BUSINE$$! The recent lowering of the acceptable BAC, has just
added more money to the coffers.

But I digress, I'm really looking forward to this weekend and I'm sure
I'll see many of the attendees on this list at some point.

Fwd: (313) Shake

2007-06-05 Thread jwan allen

Wow, it's pretty early in the morning to read such asine comments and
I haven't even read the AP wire yet.

Before I begin, I have to take some responsibilty here, since I did
provide certain treats that obviously clouded his thinking. That being
said, lets debunk this myth of the same set.

1) The previous set couldn't have contained the new UR record since I
jjust handed it to Shake 5 min before he played it (great record by
the way everyone should go out and buy it, if you haven't already done
so) and I haven't spoken to Doc brown lately.

2) I'm sure the records you recognized were in fact his own records
that he was dropping, and as a fellow label co-owner, I hold no ill
will against someone dropping their own sh!t, especially when it's
fanf%ckingtastic.

3) Wow that's the first time i've heard someone complain about hearing
classics, I'm speechless on that one.

4) As for the mixer I'll take the hit on that one as well. I realized
that at times the low pass filter was pushed down on the right table
and I didn't intervene. I'm sorry that I ruined your experience, my
bad. But I noticed that everyone else was having the time of their
lives, myself included.

5) As for finding the fantastic music he dropped boring, that's your
loss. But then again I shouldn't expect that much from someone who
enjoys Anchorman over the 40-year old virgin. For those readers who
have no idea what I'm referring to, trust me when I say there's no
comparison, the virgin crushes the Anchorman.

Stay classy 313;)

Im one of Shake's biggest fans but even I could not enjoy myself at his
set. 1st of all i heard the same exact set played by him a year ago at an
after party at olslo's. no kidding it was the same for sure. the only
difffrence was instead of juggiling two copies of the pace he juggled
phillips track last time.
and i don't mind the trainwrecks if the songs are good. they were good the
year before. boring this year.
And if you are asked to play a major festival please familarize yourself
with the mixer you will be playing with. shake looked confused and should
not have tried playing with the onboard effects if he didn't know how.
Let the hating begin!

maybe dance music may need some juicing up or something, but vinyl is nowhere

Not sure that's the case over here - see my previous mail. Of course part of
the reason that shops here are having a hard time is
vinyl as well as downloads being bought online but it's a worrying situation
nevertheless.

2007-07-02 Thread jwan allen

Plus the RS pressing on the Deep Space album is nice as well, never
had a problem with any crusties in my mix.

Speaking of Convextion his record on AW is very nice, Arne has been
holding it down for quite some time, So I'm glad to see the added
exposure his releases as well the more recent releases on his label
(Kubra, Convextion, etc) have gotten. Keep it up!

it has original, echospace remix, convextion remix. i have no idea what either
of the remixes sound like, or if it is gus more in dub mode or techno but i
suspect the latter. echospace is not deepchord btw, it's a collab between
soultek and rod from deepchord. i really liked their miranda remix and soultek
has played me stuff that is all over the map s...hmmm! i'm also excited to
hear the original with new mastering because the original is one of the
crustier sounding metroplex records iirc?

i still haven't really heard vantage isle either, my copy got lost in the mail.
i remember thinking it sounded nice but nothing special from clips, except for
gerard's remix ;P

cobblestone jazz's cover is kinda alright, i probably wouldnt buy it
but if someone else played it i wouldnt be offended. troy pierce's mix
is the worst crap ive heard in a long long time. he should be taken
out back and beaten.

as for the starlight, the moritz mix is already dubbed out enough for
my taste, im not sure if anyone can do it better than one of the BC

overrated but people cant seem to get enough of it.

Derek Plaslaiko played Metro Area's 3 and 4 last night, along with

here's my spin:

If you beleive that we live in a somewhat free
country, then people are free to do whatever they
wish. So if someone wants to sell a
promo/whitelabel on ebay,that's their buisness.
as for the SID records we all know you can only
purchase them in detroit, so it may be worth
someone's time/money to buy one off of ebay, if

it's a LIVE set. no tapes, no dats, no samples, no mp3s, mo audio
tracks playing back in anyway shape or form. sequencers,
synthesizers and drum machines are what make up my set. and all
are programmed on the fly in realtime. it's soulful, pumping and
can go anywhere from ambient to overthe top drums. depends on my

The mixes are pretty good in my opinion. They aren't as good as Todd orginal
tracks, but they work really well as mixing tools. Since carl's mixes are so
stripped down, (1st mix is essentially an acapella with sparse percussion
halfway through and the second mix lacking any drums) i've been having a lot of
fun layering these tracks over many of the minimal jams (substatic, perlon,
etc)I've been rocking lately. weather or not these mixes are limitied is of
no concern to me, if you like buy it when it comes out.

what's the general opinion on MA 1,2,3 4 ? Are they all worth buying
 ??
(Bearing in mind I've never heard any M.A - not that I know of anyway!)

Your best bet is to buy the album, which has a mixture of tracks from 1-4
along with a couple of new bits. Then track down the individual 12s if you
 decide you like the style.

Just about everything Metro Area have ever recorded is pretty essential
IMHO, but obviously you should make sure you like the style before you
 start
 buying everything on sight... :)

Or if you are in the pittsburgh area. You can come to Groove on Friday night.
Where it will be Shawn Rudiman Vs. Jwan, we will be performing a live pa/dj
set. This is going to sound bad but I have no idea who else is playing that
night with us. But if yo can't stand Shawn or myself;) Kenny Glasgow is in town
on friday night as well. Friday will be a good night for techno here in
Pittsburgh.

For those people that I promised I love Techno (bumperstickers/flyers)
(merrick, dj oracle, andrew, etc). I'm sending them out as quickly as possible.
Keep and eye out for them at bent crayon, record time, and sonic groove. Grab
them quick because we didn't print to many, and they have been going like
hotcakes around here. People have actually had them stolen off their cars!

looking for a few records

2000-10-09 Thread Jwan Allen
313 and G-TECH,

I'm looking for one record that for one reason or another has eluded me over
the years. I already know that is out of print. I was just wondering if someone
would be willing to part with it. The records is by Sterac and it's called
Osirion, it was released on 100% Pure (netherlands). Can anyone help me out?

The next record was i had stolen (along with a UR bag filled with 100 records)
over the summer. It's Johnny L -This is the time (carl craig remix) on XL. It
was part of a triple pack. Does anyone have this and would be willing to sell
it to me?

thank you for your time.

Re: RE: [313] rolando too good for the us?

2000-10-20 Thread Jwan Allen
I also attempted to book rolando for our event here in pittsburgh, pa. i love
techno on november 4th with dan bell, shake, shawn rudiman live, and myself. I
however didn't get any impression that he was to good to play here, he was just
booked. This is a buisness and everyone is not available when you want them. I
have dealt with UR/Submerge in the past and i have nothing but good things to
say about them. But that's not my issue. My issue is that if your associates
are truly concerned with spreading the sound of detroit as you say you are; do
they realize that there are other djs from detroit. Rolando is one of my
favorites but he's not the only one. If your associates are truly concerned
with pushing the music they would look at more than one source. Did they
coniser saunderson? d-wynn, shake?, theo parrish? dan bell? or any of the other
names out of detroit. Or are they also just trying to cash in on the fame of
knights of the jaguar? If that's the case fine, but don't sit here

and ask if Rolando is too good to play here. Just becuase he wasn't available
to play their event. It just sounds like your friends have a case of sour
grapes.

hell i'm a dj i'm playing at our i love techno event. And i have headlined
various other nights around this city, playing nothing but detroit techno. i
even played at the 7th city after party during this years demf. I offer my
services for free if your friends are truly concerned with getting this music
heard.

Now don't think of this message is a knock against you are your asscoiates. I'm
just trying point out that there are alternatives. One of the great things
about this music that there isn't just on voice, there are many and they all
deserved to be heard. (well the good ones at least;)

peace,

What's so great about that? Call me old fashioned, but since I already have the
necessary titles on the list found below, as a consumer, why would I care if
these titles are now available on bleep? As a label co-owner I would need to
research if such a service would be beneficial for our small operation. But
does this type of service actually dissuade those sites such as jet groove (or
whatever they are called now) from pilfering legal mp3s (or other unauthorized

drum and bass is effectively dead anyway

WOOHOO

Can I dance on its grave?

I never liked the pony-tailed, puffa jacketed, escort driving, half gippo,
half posh student trying to be rudebwoy types anyway. and their bandwagon
jumping ways. oh, no one wants mad records with 160 bpm breaks and sped up
cheesy vocal samples anymore, I know, lets make JUNGLE. It's 'credible'.
Oh, wait, no one wants jungle now, lets make speed GARAGE. You know, we'll
just make it the same as everyone else does. No need for our own style or
anything

Just out of interest though - how does something become 'dead'?
Surely 'detroit techno' died years ago right, if 'drum and bass' is dead?

alex

p.s. Tom - 5 of my english pounds (thats ten of your worthless U.S
dollars), says you used to LOVE jungle/drum and bass.

Re: (313) Hello My Name Is

2005-06-17 Thread jwan allen

Name: Jwan Allen
Age: 29
Live: Pittsburgh, PA

First thing that made me like electronic music: NYC Radio, back in the 80's it
was quite common to hear club music late at night on various mix shows on
WBLS, Kiss-Fm and what would later become Hot 97 the place where hip-hop
lives.(irony?)

First Party: NASA event in the early 90’s, Paul C dragged me to it. Thanks man!

Favorite Club: In Pittsburgh? N/A - In the early days as long as venue had bass
bins I was happy.

Favorite Party that was promptly shut down shortly thereafter: Heaven New
Year's Eve 95 - From what I remember the speakers stacks were close to 10 feet
high (I'm 5'11) and everyone was havin' it until NYC's finest kicked everyone
out.

First Techno Record: Morgan Geist - Quadrilocular Ep Metamorphic '94

First Detroit Techno Record: Strings of Life

Favorite place for breakfast in Detroit: The Clique

Favorite DJ's: Mills, Shake, Hood, Dan Bell

Favorite Live Act: UR, Shawn Rudiman

Favorite Sets at any of the Festivals: Three Chairs 2003 if you were there you
know what I'm talking about. Basic Channel first DEMF – 3 hours of brilliance
in the afternoon sun

Favorite Detroit djing experience: 7th City After party - 1st DEMF – Humbling,
since I’ve been a fan boy for close to 10 years at this point

Funniest Djing experience: Toronto a couple of years ago – Carl Craig,
Moonstarr, Todd Sines, James Duncan and various other people on the bill– I
happened to be in town for the show and was asked to throw on few records
because Carl was running late. So for the next 45 min to an hour I had to
explain to every patron that asked that I wasn’t Carl Craig and that I’m just
another black guy who happens to play Detroit techno.

2007-08-23 Thread jwan allen
Fact, you lose a couple of dbs when you go over that threshold, it
might sound find to the average ear, but it won't be the hottest
(loudest) cut possible.

Nine min. max per side if the record is cut at 45rpm. The facts as I
know them are straight from our the pressing plant, Archer (Detroit).
Even though those tracks sound fine, they could be louder.

I've also played on a UREI back in '03 and the experience was
fantastic. Its one of the few times I raved about the mixer afterward.
I'm use to playing on mixer that was once nice but its better days
have long since past.

The funny thing about that event was that Carl Craig was running late,
so ppl kept assuming I was him, asking for pictures and what not. I
had to explain about a dozen times that I was just another black dj
from a depressed industrial town, with a better football team of
course. Go Steelers!

the reason that Urei didn't put EQs on their mixers until recently is
 because
they made their mixers to do one thing very very well and they sound
 amazing

it resulted in a very clean and uncluttered board
you then were encouraged to add on a high quality EQ to match the quality
 of the Urei mixer

If you match the quality in everything from the mixer to your output
speakers and everything behind the mixers you get a phenomenal sound
problem is people don't understand that and they think the more crap they
pile onto a mixer the better they will be at DJing (ooh flnge!)

Urei mixers are probably the best I've ever heard (but then again, if you
stick a Urei into a 2nd/3rd rate system you're not going to hear it anyway)

2007-11-28 Thread jwan allen
That's a shame to hear about dance tracks, I was just there over the
Thanksgiving Holiday and noticed that bins were a bit sparse than
previous years. Dance tracks was one of few stores in NYC that still
supported domestic techno, even if they didn't order a ton of copies,
they still stocked labels like us (technoir audio) and I always
appreciated that fact.

My last two purchases at Dance tracks were the Brennan Green - Escape
from Chinatown (Daniel Wang Remix) and Tony Allen - Killmode (Carl
Craig Remix)

Its sad to realize that I'm running out of shops to dig in, each time
I return home to the NYC metro area.

Re: (313) Octave One - Off The Grid 2xLP

2007-12-07 Thread jwan allen
I have this as well, just haven't played it that much, since I didn't
mean to order this version. That's on me, but I still find it somewhat
annoying that 12 and album have the same title. I must have been on
something at the time, not to realize the price difference and or the
format, again that's on me. I'll give it another listen this evening
to see if those issues are present in my copy. The second reason I
haven't played it since the initial ordering snafu, I already have
these tracks and was somewhat disappointed to have these live
versions.

Now, this is a great introduction for the new generation of fans that
witnessed their smashing performance at the festival or the other
young bucks out there. But for the vinyl veterans like myself that
already have a very complete collection of their material, this is
just a nice souvenir. I might even just re gift this to someone else
for the holidays.

 i doubt it, this is like listening to a 64kb mp3, i honestly can't
believe it's intentional! and the last tresor Octave One 12 was fairly
 normal.

Hmm. Hesitate to say this as I haven't heard it, but is it not possible
that you're actully experiencing the nu-skool DM 'overcompression'
mastering aesthetic? I've noticed it a lot with their projects over the
last few years. Sadly, the beautiful sense of proportion coupled with
amazing clarity and impressive volume which we used to get from records
which passed through their shop, seems to be harder to find nowadays ...

 'sup 313

just wondering if anyone else has picked up the double vinyl of this on
Tresor? Got my copy the other day and the pressing is terrible, really
distorted. There is absolutely no way I could play this in a
clubwhich i'm gutted about, cos there are some killer tracks on it.
I have the single 12 on tresor which is fine.

is this widespread or is it just an unlucky one off? it's mastered and
pressed at DM so i'm thinking it must be a mistake...

Re: (313) detroit party flyers

2008-01-11 Thread jwan allen
Well that all depends on what you are looking for in a flyer and if
that's even important to you. Last I checked I never was drawn to
attend an event based on the designers skills in photoshop.

With that being said, I haven't found a flyer to touch what my crew
came up with for our event 8 years ago. It was a little shindig with
DBX, Shake, Shawn Rudiman and company. We called it I love techno,
not orginal, but this was 2000. It was a homage to the 'I love New
York tourist campaign of the early 80's. In keeping with the
campaign's theme the flyers were bumper stickers, so even if you lost
the backing or never saw the line-up, you had the date and time of
when it was going down.

Simple, effective and I still see the flyers on cars all over the
country to this day, mine included.

Really? I think US flyers are still somewhat stuck in this era while UK
flyer design is much better now.

Freak Mode party looks like it would have been great: Russ Gabriel, DBX,
Ectomorph (live), Rotator, Will Webb, Taj Bell

another good looking line-up is Gear: Spacetime Continuum, Autechre,
Mark Broom, Stacey Pullen, Eric Haupt...

 1996 - good vintage

  CHAPTER ONE

COMING SOON: Various Artists – Viewpoints Chapter One / AW-010LP
  AW-010CD (2xLP / CD)

  For soundsnippets/preview clips please visit:
  http://www.arneweinberg.de/releases/aw010.html

  Release date: april 2008

AW-Recordings is proud to present the first label compilation
available on double vinyl and on CD. Viewpoints features new
material by artists all around the globe with the same kind of
vision in mind. Deepness, soul and timelessness expressed in
different ways of electronic music. The compilation features some
new talents alongside some well known producers.

Louis Haiman: Based in St. Louis he is running his label fwdthought
featuring artists such as Tony Drake and Chris Schubert. He is best
known for his contributions to Transmat. Inner Technology is a
  deep swirling filtered electro tune.

CRC: aka Harrison Fnord aka Michael Diekmann. Coming from Finland
his sound is best described as the northern version of the good old
days of Detroit and old Plus 8 records. He has released on several
labels such as Statik Entertainment or Curle and is definitely one
  to watch in the future.

Alex Leon: Not only doing the complete graphics for AW, Alex also
does some music of his own. Being very shy and not willing to let
the public hear his creations it's great to present you one of his
deep ambient pieces. The perfect soundtrack for a rainy nightdrive.

Deixis: A mysterious new artist from the UK. This CD only bonus
track introduces Deixis to the label rooster. A complete 12 will
follow later this year. The stuff can be best described as a mixture
of old B12, Black Dog and Convextion or Maurizio material. CD only
  bonus track!

Stephen Brown: Stephen doesn't really need an introduction. He has
released superb material on Djax Up Beats, Transmat and Subject
Detroit to name a few. He created his own unique sound through the
90's until now and we are happy to have him on the compilation.

Time Light Curve: This is a new project of Gerard Hanson aka
Convextion / E.R.P. Expect some machine funk coming directly from
  Texas.

Myon: First ever release by this fresh artist from germany. Pure
analogue electronic techno with a clear influence by Stasis or As
One for example. Expect a lot of melodic soul on thisCD only bonus
  track.

Strand: the Detroit based trio is known from releases on Delsin and
Shake's Frictional label. Soleil is wonderful deep stringladden
detroit techno with a beautiful melodic piano line. Licensed from
  Harbonder, Strand's imprint.

Ovatow: Ovatow prefers to stay unknown. He already released on
Frantic Flowers and Syncom Data's SD label. He continues his unique
dub influenced style with Visitation_v4 in a very funky electro
way. Ovatow breaks the musical barriers of the so called dub techno
  genre.

East Island: One of the famous dutch duo's from the good old days.
They had several releases on legendary Dutch label Eevo Lute and on
Down Low Music together with The Moderator. The master of Servir
is an emotional deep techno masterpiece that takes your mind onto a
journey to far away galaxies. CD bonus only!

XDB: We welcome Kosta Athanassiadis to the label. He is one of the
very few German producers creating his own unique sound nowadays and
his label Metrolux is hot! Watch out for this talented man and
listen to c.o.n. to experience some good quality techno music.

Obsolete Music Technology: aka Steven Tang, living in Chicago and
running his imprint Emphasis for a long time. We think he should be
much more famous and hopefully Evening Star will help to raise the
attention. His style is a mixture of Detroit and Chicago sound with
a melancholic and deep sense for beautiful melodies.

Derek Carr: Hailing from Ireland, Derek closes the album with one of
his most emotional and deepest tracks. Telemetry is pure
electronic soul. Check out his debut album Science Soul on Nice
Nasty which was released in 2007.

  Next on AW-Recordings:

  AW-011 Paul Mac – Options EP (12)
  AW-012 Deixis – Nomads Soul a Mannequins Romance (12) ( incl.
  Arne Weinberg Remix )

  Tracklisting:

  VINYL:
A1 Louis Haiman – Inner technology
  A2 CRC – Archon
A3 Alex leon – Instant grey

B1 Stephen Brown – Light rain
B2 Time Light Curve – Multipole vector

  C1 Strand – Soleil
  C2 Ovatow – Visitation_v4
  C3 XDB – c.o.n.

Re: (313) US Mail Order

2008-01-23 Thread jwan allen
I know it's been mentioned before, but lets not forget opusrecords.com
the retail end of the Downtown 161 distribution. This is where I've
ordered my KDJ, Environ, and the latest Detrechno record from. Their
prices are very competitive and I generally get my records in the same
week, granted it helps that i'm also only a few hours away from the
east coast.

I understand every one's frustrations, as we have money to spend and
are finding less and less places that can fulfill our needs, on the
retail and distribution end. Much like the rest of my associates on
this list, I'm stubborn and will continue to play and support vinyl,
even if it means bringing my own tables to gigs.

Yeah that's a great soundtrack! What I find interesting is that the

having to check the tracklisting to make sure it wasn't mislabled.
This was one of the last few shining moments in Mr. Beltram's

can't even describe, since I've already forgotten what they sounded
like, bland disco techno fodder. Say it ain't so Joe!
