Re: [313] Beyer's homage to D
The Beyer's homage to the D, on Svek was lackluster prodection in my opinion. Sure he threw in some chords, but the EP was just average overall. A quote from a customer in the record store this sounds like 20 other records I have, so I'll pass on this one. Lido Hotel is a very good album, not the album of the year though. I vote for either Christian Morganstern's Lydia ep (this record hasn't left my box) or the extremely slept on Terreance Dixon on Tresor, a very good album that I never hear anyone talk about. Re: [313] Suprised? I was!
The prices for Axis 20 vary from 15.99 US (Sonic Groove) to 22.00 US (planetxusa.com) . You should realize that record companies/dist. charge a set price for their records. Each individual record store can charge whatever they want for a record. Also aixs 20 is limited so a few stores that were able to snag a copy or two, might be taxing heads for the hell of it. RE: (313) new mix online
Those samples have been buggin me for quite some time since i couldn't remember the other record I owned with the same sample. So while listening to Howard Stern this morning the answer popped in my head, Nick holder used the same sample for Carnival on DNH or NRK If you purchaed the 'From within Album. Re: (313) new lp on transmat ??
The last 2 Arnolds on transmat/fragile were stellar in my opinion (they never leave my bag), the Rodenbush was lush disposable crap. It's one of those records you forget what it sounds like the minute you pick up the needle. His last release on immigrant was much far superior (granted I hear the transmat tracks were over 2 years old before they were released). i'm a fanboy of Detroit techno (aren't we all?) or true believer as shake would like to call me. So I do look forward to each new release from some of my favorite labels. But, as my record collection has reached a critical mass over the years, I'm not expecting each new release to be the best thing since sliced bread, if the latest release isn't that hot, I'll just keep playing the older ones. in the meantime Obi wan's recent faves from the D: Theo Parrish True Cities ( Harmione Park ) good stuff, I have to play it at +6 but that's cool w/ me. Mr. De ' - Stretchin out -Wholnleeone is the track for me the Martian - Pipe carrier - Stellar release Mills see the light, - dtill wrapping my head around these, so far the is my favorite. classics that still kill it: Ur Hardlife - classic Shawn Rudiman - Evidence of life - sure he's my boy, but its a hot record (check the new eleventh hour and technoiraudio, too (shameless plug)) Anthony Shakir - Tracks for my Father and Mother- two of my favorites from mr. shakir UR - codebreaker - classic Mills - time machine 12 not worth $300 bucks, but i like it. I could go one, but it's after 4 pm (est) so I should get back to some actual work. jw - Original Message - From: Thomas D. I'm certainly not slating all the releases, just don't think they are particularly amazing or particularly different from what else is out there. I am a huge, huge Transmat fan from way back but it's not a case of me wanting to hear a re-hash of Nude Photo or anything so that's not my problem, just that the general quality threshold seems to dropped dramatically since Time:Space and Aril Brikah id argue that all day long. i havent heard the Rodenbush release, but the only other releases since aril have been the john arnold and john beltran (both of which were very very nice) and the stephen browns, which were not classics, but still pretty high quality stuff. transmat isnt my favorite label, and im certainly not a derrick may fanboy, but overall i trust the guy's taste to be at least decent and at best fantastic. deepartures in time is my favorite techno record as well as possibly my favorite record ever. tom andythepooh.com -- ___ http://www.ign.com Upgrade to Premium IGN Email - 15MB of space - No ads! - Pop3 Downloads Powered by Outblaze
(313) the warhol: JOHN ARNOLD
the warhol: Good Fridays FRIDAY DECEMBER 12th 2003 THE ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM presents a live performance by Detroit electronic nu jazz composer/dj JOHN ARNOLD touring in support of his acclaimed new UBIQUITY RECORDS CD/LP Neighborhood Science www.ubiquityrecords.com/john_arnold.html www.ubiquityrecords.com/ur136.html Over the past few years John Arnold has risen to public attention along with a new wave of Detroit producers and artists. Neighborhood Science includes appearances from some of those peers like keyboard maestro and vocalist Amp Fiddler (of P-Funk All-stars and Genuine Records), vocalist and multi-talented musician Ayro (Omoa music) and producer and vocalist Malik Alstin (collaborator with Roy Davis jr). They just happen to be from around the way, and helped shape the John Arnold sound on Neighborhood Science, his debut album. My neighborhood is brimming with talent, we all live and breathe music. I really wanted to present this scene on my record, because it defines who I am, states Arnold. Neighborhood Science is an album that works in a club as well as at home but Arnold purposefully avoided making something more accessible for the sake of sales. Multi-layered soulful tracks retain an electronic edge that works on the dance floor and nods to the influence of dons of the Detroit scene like Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin, and Derrick May. When I listen to records for the first time it's as a DJ. I look for the tracks I can play out first. If I like an artist because they make great dance music and then they come out with a record that is far removed from this, I feel let down. I have always felt that dancing is a big part of experiencing music. Once people are dancing, they are open to anything you want to throw at them, explains Arnold. Within electronic music circles formally trained artists often struggle to reconcile their academic backgrounds and the unconventional DIY ethos of club culture, yet John Arnold's classical guitar education has expanded, not limited, his imagination. I was able to make this whole record in my bedroom with the help of some friends. And you have to understand how all the instruments fit together and how to play them of course. The training just gives me a wider pallet and understanding of music to work with. I think having the experience of working and understanding different instruments and music helped me produce a wide variety of sounds and colors, says Arnold. Carl Craig invited Arnold to perform his first-ever live electronic gig at the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF), and Derrick May, who picked up his Sparkle EP for Transmat Records' sister label, Fragile, asked him back to perform in 2003. He's released a second Transmat EP titled Four Minutes? has 2 singles out on Ubiquity, and jammed on records by fellow Detroit acts John Beltran, the Detroit Escalator Co and Recloose. Prior to John Arnold's live performance, local DJs John E. and Noah Nine will perform. All-Ages. Show starts promptly at 6pm. Ends at 10:00 pm. $3 Cover. Agreed, my copy came in the mail the other day, Rudiman and I both flipped over every track. So this record gets the technoiraudio seal of approval (if that means anything to anyone). RE: (313) Re: the most heard tracks/top tunes @ Movement
Agreed, Carl's remix of Ravers Suck our Sound is an essential tune. I'm glad to finally have it on 12 after just about wearing out my version off a Colin Dale's Outer Limit's vol 2. The track I heard the most over the weekend was G-man Quo Vadis. No complaints on my end since this record NEVER leaves my bag. During a late-night rip session, fellow members of crew pointed out to me (while I was passed out) that this record is fairly indiciative of the Jwan Allen Sound. So when we heard Mike Huckaby drop this record during his fabulous set the next day, we all lost it! jw ps full review/comments/opinions will be posted sometime next week. The most effective are the tracks which have a kind of build or holding off (before something kicks in) which is hardly even noticable. Its like you hear it unconsiously. I'm thinking of something like the first track on Kevin Saunderson's Xmix or Derrick May's remix of Praise (Inner City). the 4th wave's electroluv on planet e kills me. its gotta be one of the best 10 techno tunes ever. the way the strings and pads and cymbals build and release tension is just superb, totally flawless execution. tom andythepooh.com -- ___ http://www.ign.com Now with Premium IGN Mail for only US$14.95/yr Powered by Outblaze

Fwd: (313) Shake
Wow, it's pretty early in the morning to read such asine comments and I haven't even read the AP wire yet. Before I begin, I have to take some responsibilty here, since I did provide certain treats that obviously clouded his thinking. That being said, lets debunk this myth of the same set. 1) The previous set couldn't have contained the new UR record since I jjust handed it to Shake 5 min before he played it (great record by the way everyone should go out and buy it, if you haven't already done so) and I haven't spoken to Doc brown lately. 2) I'm sure the records you recognized were in fact his own records that he was dropping, and as a fellow label co-owner, I hold no ill will against someone dropping their own sh!t, especially when it's fanf%ckingtastic. 3) Wow that's the first time i've heard someone complain about hearing classics, I'm speechless on that one. 4) As for the mixer I'll take the hit on that one as well. I realized that at times the low pass filter was pushed down on the right table and I didn't intervene. I'm sorry that I ruined your experience, my bad. But I noticed that everyone else was having the time of their lives, myself included. 5) As for finding the fantastic music he dropped boring, that's your loss. But then again I shouldn't expect that much from someone who enjoys Anchorman over the 40-year old virgin. For those readers who have no idea what I'm referring to, trust me when I say there's no comparison, the virgin crushes the Anchorman. Stay classy 313;) jw n 6/5/07, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Im one of Shake's biggest fans but even I could not enjoy myself at his set. 1st of all i heard the same exact set played by him a year ago at an after party at olslo's. no kidding it was the same for sure. the only difffrence was instead of juggiling two copies of the pace he juggled phillips track last time. and i don't mind the trainwrecks if the songs are good. they were good the year before. boring this year. here's my spin: If you beleive that we live in a somewhat free country, then people are free to do whatever they wish. So if someone wants to sell a promo/whitelabel on ebay, that's their buisness. as for the SID records we all know you can only purchase them in detroit, so it may be worth someone's time/money to buy one off of ebay, if they won't heading to the 313 anytime soon. RE: (313) Planet E
The mixes are pretty good in my opinion. They aren't as good as Todd orginal tracks, but they work really well as mixing tools. Since carl's mixes are so stripped down, (1st mix is essentially an acapella with sparse percussion halfway through and the second mix lacking any drums) i've been having a lot of fun layering these tracks over many of the minimal jams (substatic, perlon, etc)I've been rocking lately. weather or not these mixes are limitied is of no concern to me, if you like buy it when it comes out. Re: [313] re: new Seventh City releases and personal plug
For those interesed in hearing Shawn's new record. Go to www.wrct.org between 7pm and 9pm (EST), on thursday night. The radio show is called the space groove with DJ Plastique. I'll be down for the show, so I'll drop every single cut off of the record. My personal favorite on this release is Pixie's groove. Or if you are in the pittsburgh area. You can come to Groove on Friday night. Where it will be Shawn Rudiman Vs. Jwan, we will be performing a live pa/dj set. This is going to sound bad but I have no idea who else is playing that night with us. But if yo can't stand Shawn or myself;) Kenny Glasgow is in town on friday night as well. Friday will be a good night for techno here in Pittsburgh. For those people that I promised I love Techno (bumperstickers/flyers) (merrick, dj oracle, andrew, etc). I'm sending them out as quickly as possible. Keep and eye out for them at bent crayon, record time, and sonic groove. Grab them quick because we didn't print to many, and they have been going like hotcakes around here. Re: RE: [313] rolando too good for the us?
I also attempted to book rolando for our event here in pittsburgh, pa. i love techno on november 4th with dan bell, shake, shawn rudiman live, and myself. I however didn't get any impression that he was to good to play here, he was just booked. This is a buisness and everyone is not available when you want them. I have dealt with UR/Submerge in the past and i have nothing but good things to say about them. But that's not my issue. My issue is that if your associates are truly concerned with spreading the sound of detroit as you say you are; do they realize that there are other djs from detroit. Rolando is one of my favorites but he's not the only one. If your associates are truly concerned with pushing the music they would look at more than one source. Did they coniser saunderson? d-wynn, shake?, theo parrish? dan bell? or any of the other names out of detroit. Or are they also just trying to cash in on the fame of knights of the jaguar? If that's the case fine, but don't sit here and ask if Rolando is too good to play here. Just becuase he wasn't available to play their event. It just sounds like your friends have a case of sour grapes. hell i'm a dj i'm playing at our i love techno event. And i have headlined various other nights around this city, playing nothing but detroit techno. i even played at the 7th city after party during this years demf. I offer my services for free if your friends are truly concerned with getting this music heard. Now don't think of this message is a knock against you are your asscoiates. I'm just trying point out that there are alternatives. One of the great things about this music that there isn't just on voice, there are many and they all deserved to be heard. Re: (313) OT - 12 pressing
Fact, you lose a couple of dbs when you go over that threshold, it might sound find to the average ear, but it won't be the hottest (loudest) cut possible. Nine min. max per side if the record is cut at 45rpm. The facts as I know them are straight from our the pressing plant, Archer (Detroit). I've also played on a UREI back in '03 and the experience was fantastic. Its one of the few times I raved about the mixer afterward. I'm use to playing on mixer that was once nice but its better days have long since past. The funny thing about that event was that Carl Craig was running late, so ppl kept assuming I was him, asking for pictures and what not. I had to explain about a dozen times that I was just another black dj from a depressed industrial town, with a better football team of course. Go Steelers! jw On 10/24/07, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Played on an original UREI at a club once, but as mentioned, the lack of EQ was daft. the reason that Urei didn't put EQs on their mixers until recently is because they made their mixers to do one thing very very well and they sound amazing it resulted in a very clean and uncluttered board you then were encouraged to add on a high quality EQ to match the quality of the Urei mixer If you match the quality in everything from the mixer to your output speakers and everything behind the mixers you get a phenomenal sound problem is people don't understand that and they think the more crap they pile onto a mixer the better they will be at DJing (ooh flnge!) Urei mixers are probably the best I've ever heard (but then again, if you stick a Urei into a 2nd/3rd rate system you're not going to hear it anyway) MEK -- Technoir Audio http://www.technoiraudio.com dealing with your imperfect world
Re: (313) Cisco's Demise
That's a shame to hear about dance tracks, I was just there over the Thanksgiving Holiday and noticed that bins were a bit sparse than previous years. Dance tracks was one of few stores in NYC that still supported domestic techno, even if they didn't order a ton of copies, they still stocked labels like us (technoir audio) and I always appreciated that fact. My last two purchases at Dance tracks were the Brennan Green - Escape from Chinatown (Daniel Wang Remix) and Tony Allen - Killmode (Carl Craig Remix) Its sad to realize that I'm running out of shops to dig in, each time I return home to the NYC metro area. jw On Nov 28, 2007 9:55 AM, Michael Kuszynski [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: wow. that sucks. dance tracks held a pretty cool stock of records and always played good stuff over the system. a bit house centered but i always want more techno. seems like people crossing into other cross product platforms like selling audio gear and software a la satellite are able to still do well (i hope). Re: (313) Octave One - Off The Grid 2xLP
I have this as well, just haven't played it that much, since I didn't mean to order this version. That's on me, but I still find it somewhat annoying that 12 and album have the same title. I must have been on something at the time, not to realize the price difference and or the format, again that's on me. I'll give it another listen this evening to see if those issues are present in my copy. The second reason I haven't played it since the initial ordering snafu, I already have these tracks and was somewhat disappointed to have these live versions. Now, this is a great introduction for the new generation of fans that witnessed their smashing performance at the festival or the other young bucks out there. But for the vinyl veterans like myself that already have a very complete collection of their material, this is just a nice souvenir. I might even just re gift this to someone else for the holidays. jw On Dec 7, 2007 8:22 AM, Chris Rooney [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: yeah i just wanted to confirm that there's some decent pressings of it out there before i get another. surely someone else on the 313 list has the latest Octave One album on vinyl??? everybody just downloading mp3s these days? -Original Message- From: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 07 December 2007 12:30 To: Chris Rooney; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) Octave One - Off The Grid 2xLP OK maybe you got one from a duff batch. Re: (313) detroit party flyers
Well that all depends on what you are looking for in a flyer and if that's even important to you. Last I checked I never was drawn to attend an event based on the designers skills in photoshop. With that being said, I haven't found a flyer to touch what my crew came up with for our event 8 years ago. It was a little shindig with DBX, Shake, Shawn Rudiman and company. We called it I love techno, not orginal, but this was 2000. It was a homage to the 'I love New York tourist campaign of the early 80's. In keeping with the campaign's theme the flyers were bumper stickers, so even if you lost the backing or never saw the line-up, you had the date and time of when it was going down. Simple, effective and I still see the flyers on cars all over the country to this day, mine included. jw On Jan 11, 2008 11:32 AM, Robert Taylor [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sorry, I was referring to the 90s. Viewpoints features new material by artists all around the globe with the same kind of vision in mind. Deepness, soul and timelessness expressed in different ways of electronic music. The compilation features some new talents alongside some well known producers. Louis Haiman: Based in St. Louis he is running his label fwdthought featuring artists such as Tony Drake and Chris Schubert. He is best known for his contributions to Transmat. Inner Technology is a deep swirling filtered electro tune. CRC: aka Harrison Fnord aka Michael Diekmann. Coming from Finland his sound is best described as the northern version of the good old days of Detroit and old Plus 8 records. He has released on several labels such as Statik Entertainment or Curle and is definitely one to watch in the future. Alex Leon: Not only doing the complete graphics for AW, Alex also does some music of his own. Being very shy and not willing to let the public hear his creations it's great to present you one of his deep ambient pieces. The perfect soundtrack for a rainy nightdrive. Deixis: A mysterious new artist from the UK. This CD only bonus track introduces Deixis to the label rooster. A complete 12 will follow later this year. The stuff can be best described as a mixture of old B12, Black Dog and Convextion or Maurizio material. CD only bonus track! Stephen Brown: Stephen doesn't really need an introduction. He has released superb material on Djax Up Beats, Transmat and Subject Detroit to name a few. He created his own unique sound through the 90's until now and we are happy to have him on the compilation. Time Light Curve: This is a new project of Gerard Hanson aka Convextion / E.R.P. Expect some machine funk coming directly from Texas. Myon: First ever release by this fresh artist from germany. Pure analogue electronic techno with a clear influence by Stasis or As One for example. Expect a lot of melodic soul on thisCD only bonus track. Strand: the Detroit based trio is known from releases on Delsin and Shake's Frictional label. Soleil is wonderful deep stringladden detroit techno with a beautiful melodic piano line. Licensed from Harbonder, Strand's imprint. Ovatow: Ovatow prefers to stay unknown. He already released on Frantic Flowers and Syncom Data's SD label. He continues his unique dub influenced style with Visitation_v4 in a very funky electro way. Ovatow breaks the musical barriers of the so called dub techno genre. East Island: One of the famous dutch duo's from the good old days. They had several releases on legendary Dutch label Eevo Lute and on Down Low Music together with The Moderator. The master of Servir is an emotional deep techno masterpiece that takes your mind onto a journey to far away galaxies. CD bonus only! XDB: We welcome Kosta Athanassiadis to the label. He is one of the very few German producers creating his own unique sound nowadays and his label Metrolux is hot! Watch out for this talented man and listen to c.o.n. to experience some good quality techno music. Obsolete Music Technology: aka Steven Tang, living in Chicago and running his imprint Emphasis for a long time. We think he should be much more famous and hopefully Evening Star will help to raise the attention. His style is a mixture of Detroit and Chicago sound with a melancholic and deep sense for beautiful melodies. Derek Carr: Hailing from Ireland, Derek closes the album with one of his most emotional and deepest tracks. Telemetry is pure electronic soul. Check out his debut album Science Soul on Nice Nasty which was released in 2007. Next on AW-Recordings: AW-011 Paul Mac – Options EP (12) AW-012 Deixis – Nomads Soul a Mannequins Romance (12) ( incl. Re: (313) US Mail Order
I know it's been mentioned before, but lets not forget opusrecords.com the retail end of the Downtown 161 distribution. This is where I've ordered my KDJ, Environ, and the latest Detrechno record from. Their prices are very competitive and I generally get my records in the same week, granted it helps that i'm also only a few hours away from the east coast. I understand every one's frustrations, as we have money to spend and are finding less and less places that can fulfill our needs, on the retail and distribution end.
