[cayugabirds-l] Fw: eBird Report - Montezuma NWR, Mar 9, 2013
GREAT DAY!!! After going a long period of time without birding, I FINALLY got out today and was rewarded heavily for it. Bald Eagles were at every location today. had a juvenile pull a fish out of the river along the wildlife drive. A Northern Shrike was a great warm up for the crowd that showed up to see 6 Short-Eared Owls put on a show Snow geese blanketed the sky for 2 fly overs at Morgan Rd. first North, then again south. The flocks continued as far as your binoculars would let you see!!! Couldn't find any odd gulls. Horned Larks were singing all day-Armitage Rd., Van Dyne Spoor, Morgan Rd. don't forget to look up, Joe - Forwarded Message - From: "do-not-re...@ebird.org" To: joeb...@yahoo.com Sent: Saturday, March 9, 2013 10:25 PM Subject: eBird Report - Montezuma NWR, Mar 9, 2013 Montezuma NWR, US-NY Mar 9, 2013 11:45 AM - 6:45 PM Protocol: Traveling 13.0 mile(s) 35 species Snow Goose X must have been well over 50,000 geese flying over. the flocks were endless Canada Goose X Mute Swan 2 Tundra Swan 500 American Black Duck X Mallard X Northern Pintail X easily over 100. [cayugabirds-l] Ovid Short-eared owls
This evening, Mary Jean, Emma and went to Ovid to pick up Chinese takeout, and on the way home, about 6:30pm we saw 3 short-eared owls along Center Rd, just east of Co Rd 129. We also drove along Rock River Rd and Wycoff Rd, but didn't see any. Re: [cayugabirds-l] short-eared owls @ Morgan Road
As part of the group that relocated to Carncross Rd. this evening where we had excellent looks at three Short-eared Owls, I should note that the distant "possibilities" that Colleen referred to were indeed distant Short-eared Owls. They were quite far out and we tried to help many in the large group get visuals on them, but they were constantly in view towards the direction of Carncross, which is why we ended up heading that way. Re: [cayugabirds-l] short-eared owls @ Morgan Road
Hi all, After these first few owls flew by the buildings on Morgan Road (they didn't come out until about 5:45), Scott Haber, Susan Newman and I decided to head down to the distant birds near Carncross Road, where we could see birds fighting with each other and perching from afar. When we arrived at Carncross Road, we found a close bird flying by over the newly constructed bridge, headed back towards Morgan Road. (This may have been the bird that Colleen saw at about the same time). We also had a distant bird near the treeline to the Northeast and a very close and cooperative bird hunting back and forth over the berm just to the north of the road, for a total of 6 birds in the immediate area. Such beautiful birds!! - Brad -- Brad Walker On Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 9:44 PM, cl...@juno.com wrote: > Finally made it up to Morgan Road today on the way home from Oswego. [cayugabirds-l] short-eared owls @ Morgan Road
Finally made it up to Morgan Road today on the way home from Oswego. About 18 folks were gathered to view the possible evening's flight. After several distant possibilities and half the group leaving for Carncross Road, we headed to our car where the 90-degree angle of the buildings funneled in the distinctive bark of hunting owls. The remnant of 6 birders quickly relocated and were treated to an up close fly-by and several minutes of watching two owls flit back and forth over the field. Many thanks to my husband for his last look and listen, which alerted us to the owls. [cayugabirds-l] Saturday around the lake
Just a quick note with some of my highlights from the day. I went up the lake with Brad Walker, Livia Santana, and Flávia Guimarães. The east side was pretty quiet until north of Union Springs, where we could see the huge Snow Goose flock still out on the lake, closer to the west side. Cayuga, Harris Park, and Mud Lock were active with lots of the normal waterfowl, but nothing out of the ordinary. Similarly the Mucklands had lots of Northern Pintail and Tundra Swans but not much variety of waterfowl. Brad spotted a juvenile WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW in the weeds along the highway, though. On Van Dyne Spoor Road we found a nice adult NORTHERN SHRIKE and then had great looks at a beautiful juvenile GOLDEN EAGLE circling low over the forest edge. Carncross Road had a lot of gulls but nothing different. As Chris Posted, the Snow Goose flock was excellently viewed from near the south end of Lower Lake Road in Canoga. With some effort I relocated the adult male EURASIAN WIGEON, though it disappeared into the flock again before others could get on it. We eventually also found at least two ROSS'S GEESE in the group, one a typical adult quite close in the flock, and the other perhaps a mostly-adult plumaged juvenile even closer, right on the front edge, an absolutely TINY bird: https://picasaweb.google.com/37855303614931880/LateWinter2013#585352518855906 Who knows how many more were farther into the flock. [cayugabirds-l] NE Ithaca, Mt. Pleasant, etc., Sat 3/9
Here are some highlights and other notes from around Ithaca over the past few days. The birding hasn't been quite as easy as in our previous, very lucky outings, but the common birds, occasional surprises, and even long silences have still been quite worthwhile. * FISH CROWS heard calling in northeast Ithaca a couple of times this week, for the first time all year (exactly on time, based on previous patterns). * No woodcocks or owls detected in about 30 minutes around the Snyder/Mohawk/Neimi area after dark on Thursday. * One adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on the wind-lashed ice edge at Stewart Park on Friday. * One KILLDEER seen and heard over Simsbury Drive on Saturday morning. * A pair of HOODED MERGANSERS and a tight flotilla of male COMMON GOLDENEYES at East Shore Park on Saturday morning. * None of the Ruffed Grouse we were hoping to find, but maybe a dozen GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS along Star Stanton Road. * One GOLDEN EAGLE seen from Mt. Pleasant, found by Chris Wood and Jessie Barry south of the easternmost field and neighboring woods at around 11:30 AM. Tilden saw this bird, its head lustrous "like real gold," in the sun through Chris's scope. Chris and Jessie were remarking with satisfaction how close this eagle was, but by my arguably more normal standards, the bird seemed very far away. (The redoubtable Chris and Jessie saw another Golden Eagle and also a Northern Goshawk before we arrived, plus a Rough-legged Hawk that I didn't see, but Tilden did, even when I was right there with them.) * Jessie, Chris, and we also had several nice views of HORNED LARKS, including one that stood and sang on a snow berm about 15 meters away. [cayugabirds-l] Eurasian Wigeon at Woofly's
This afternoon Luke, Jessie and I went up the west side of the Cayuga Lake and focused our efforts along Lower Lake Road on the NW side of the lake. There are tens of thousands of birds with huge numbers of Snow Geese. Most pintail are now in the mucklands and Mallard, Black Duck and Common Merganser numbers have gone down since last weekend. Still, the number of birds is spectacular. The rarest species we found was a male EURASIAN WIGEON that Jessie found mixed in with Redhead. We highly recommend eating at Woolfys and enjoying the view from the deck. The people who work there were very hospitable and the viewing in the afternoon is simply spectacular. To find Woolfys open google and type "Woolfys Cayuga Lake". [cayugabirds-l] Wildlife drive
The Montezuma wildlife drive is open up to the spillway. The water is all frozen. There were gulls sitting on the ice as well as two juvenile Bald Eagles. Other Bald Eagles were sitting on the far side of the river silhouetted by the sun. I also spotted a Harrier checking out the marsh. There were also a few Red-Wing Blackbirds. A FOS for me. Still none at home. At Mud Lock lots of swans and ducks were leaving the lake. One adult Bald Eagle was sitting at the point near the new nest. Another adult was down near the dam. It soon joined the first eagle. Maybe it has found a new mate. Another pair of adult Bald Eagles flew by the point. At Tschake pool lots of Snow Geese flew over at a very high altitude, going East.I didn't find any sitting at the Mucklands, though a large flock circled low, but continued east. On my way home I found a large flock of Snow Geese on Stone School Rd., just west of Owasco Lake which afforded me some great photographic opportunities. On the opposite side of the road were a few Horned Larks. [cayugabirds-l] Pileated WPs and Redpolls
A few minutes ago, as we were having lunch, two gorgeous male Pileated Woodpeckers flew down just outside our window, one low on the box-elder the other low on a black locust nearby. I think they were sizing up each other, in an annual Spring ritual in our yard. In my bird archives I see that last year they appeared on Feb. 12, and in 2011 on March 20, when they chased each other repeatedly all around our yard. Earlier this morning we had a crowd of 20 Common Redpolls at the nyger seed spilled on the ground. Chickadees seem to be looking at the nest-boxes. Our two Red-breasted Nuthatches are zipping in and out to the feeders all day. I have never been able to decide whether the pair we have throughout every winter stay and nest here or whether it is another pair that moves in later in the spring and spends the summer here.
