[Bug 292992] Re: GNOME-system-monitor max's out the CPU, sometimes up to 100%

2008-11-09 Thread ullix
I have a similar issue with a Ubuntu Intrepid install on an Acer Aspire
One netbook, where gnome-system-monitor plus Xorg consume 60+% CPU,
shown both by top and g-s-m.

Running top in maximized gnome-terminal after cold start. CPU usage from
Xorg:1-3%, total: 3-5%
Starting g-s-m and hiding behind the maximized terminal window: CPU usage
slowly creeps up, becoming stable at CPU usage as reported by top of Xorg:~35%
and g-s-m:~35%. All other processes combined 3%. Load average by top after
~10min is 0.73/0.78/0.56. Switching to the g-s-m window shows CPU1 and CPU2
each at 30-40%.

[Bug 216197] Re: no weather information in gnome panel

2008-11-09 Thread Kimiko Koopman
The clock doesn't show weather info for me either, even though the
checkbox is marked.

My city (Leiden, Netherlands) isn't listed, so I have to enter the
timezone and coordinates manually. The closest weather info is from
Valkenburg, Netherlands, but that info is not shown when I enter my
city.

Conversely, I do get weather info when I choose Valkenburg, Netherlands,
but then I can't change the location name and coordinates anymore. The
dialog allows me to edit them, but it simply disregards my edits when I
click Okay.

The applet should either allow me to specifiy both my own location and
the weather info to use, or select the closest weither info
automatically.

I think this is a regression from some earlier version, because my old
installation (upgraded in place over the years from warty or something
like that all the way to jaunty) does show both the correct location and
weather info.

[Bug 216197] Re: no weather information in gnome panel

2008-11-09 Thread Kimiko Koopman
Oh, I found the solution (which is probably also what I used on the old
installation). Using gconf-editor, you can edit the key
/apps/panel/applets/clock_screen0/prefs/cities. The 'code=' field of
it was set to '(null)'. After changing that part to 'EHVB', the clock
applet now shows both the correct location (Leiden) and weather info
(from Valkenburg).

Still, there should be an easier way to accomplish this than using
gconf-editor.

[Bug 296027] [NEW] Brasero reports it is 'fixating'

2008-11-09 Thread Donald Broatch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

In British English, the word has only a rather inappropriate and comic
meaning in this context:

to direct (the libido) toward an infantile form of gratification
to focus or concentrate one's gaze or attention intently or obsessively
to undergo arrestment at a stage of development

It seems the word can have the desired meaning in American English, but
only as a Transitive verb:

transitive verb1 : to make fixed, stationary, or unchanging

I believe Windows says something like 'finalising the disk'. 'Fixating
the disk' might be OK in AE (I don't know, I'm British), but 'fixating'
raises a gigle every time I see it.

[Bug 127315] Re: F-Spot puts photos in Photos folder not Pictures folder

2008-11-09 Thread Paul Kishimoto
asjdfwejqrfjcvm msz34rq33, Ralf, Giulio, etc.: Note that the bug had
been forwarded upstream and there is a patch available (about 6 months
old at this point). Some trivial search reveals a list of maintainers
for F-Spot at http://f-spot.org/Get_Involved . Perhaps it would be
helpful to send them *polite* e-mail reminders to review the patch, or
to send *polite* requests to people on the Ubuntu Bugs Team.

I highly doubt this problem is intended as cultural imperialism.
Occam's Razor indicates that it is only sloppy programming. Wild
accusations tend to make upstream developers reluctant to fix problems.

[Bug 285323] Re: Losing keyboard and mouse control when changing screen brightness with fn + arrow under intrepid

2008-11-09 Thread Svenn-Arne Dragly
Thanks Guido Vicino!

I had the same problem with the Fn + arrow keys to change brightness on my
M1330. I used blacklist video in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist as a workaround
for a href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell/+bug/226981;bug #226981/a.
Removing blacklist video fixed the problems with the keys locking up, but a
href=https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell/+bug/226981;bug #226981/a returned.

At least I can change the brightness without locking up the computer,
even though I know change it with 4 increments a time.

[Bug 295851] Re: five brasero items in menu editor

2008-11-09 Thread Magnus S
Yeah, you are right. The more i think of it the more i agree with you.
It wouldn't look to good with 6 or 7 entries of pidgin and transmission
either, so why is there 5 brasero?

If a person needs to run an app in a special way, he/she will probably
be smart enough to start it from terminal or to create a custom
launcher.

Bug is open!

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-11-09 Thread ThorbjørnTux
I do not think that this bug can be closed yet.
With Kubuntu 8.10 (with all updates) I can not switch user.

When I click 'start new session' on the 'Warning - New Session' dialog I get a
freeze.
(If I use vesa I successful get a new session - however when I return to my
previous the graphics is a mess.)

ATI 3870.

I am however happy that I can now logout without a freeze.

Re: [Bug 295851] Re: five brasero items in menu editor

2008-11-09 Thread Jessie Lawrence
oh, i didnt click on them to see the commands

i still think that it doesnt look good, and is kinda unnecessary to
have five icons that look completely identical. i think there should
just be one icon by default that just opens up the main screen of
brasero, and if the user wants to open it up in a special mode, they
can add it themselves, or just edit the existing brasero item.

On Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 8:28 AM, Magnus S [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
If you look at the properties of the items you'll see that the commands

Solomoriah, my sentiments exactly. I don't think this tight release

Intrepid adds insult to injury. The properties of a *.desktop file had
a Link tab which used to allow a copy/paste to get the proper URL.
It's GONE in Intrepid!!!

[Bug 296127] [NEW] gdmgreeter exits on RandR v1.1

500 http://fi.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages

3) What you expected to happen

 - enabled remote logins using gdmsetup, no other changes. (seems to default to
gdmgreeter) (NB: This might make
your remote session vulnerable to attacks, don't do it if you don't understand
the consequences)

- expected to be able login from a remote Xserver running XDMCP

4) What happened instead

Login screen was not displayed on remote Xserver

My debugging gave the following explanation

When talking to an X server supporting RandR v1.1 (instead of the
current v1.2) gdmgreeter exits before displaying anything. There is no
error message to the user.

might be related to the problem

gdm[6110]: DEBUG: close_if_needed: Got G_IO_HUP on 9
gdm[6110]: DEBUG: close_if_needed: Got error on 9

However, these lines didn't tell me anything.
Using strace I found that gdmgreeter seems to be culprit:

write(2, The program \'gdmgreeter\' receive..., 583) = 583

However fd 2 seems to be /dev/null and I didn't find any information how
to turn on logging.

open(/dev/null, O_RDWR) = 2

Using tcpdump/wireshark I found that the last request sent to the X server is
RandR opcode 8. My X server replies with BadRequest. The Xserver is correct,
because it supports only RandR v1.1 and opcode 8 was added for protocol version
1.2 (see
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=xorg/proto/randrproto.git;f=randrproto.txt;a=blob)

Actually gdmgreeter queries the RandR version just before the bad
request, but obviously it does not use the version information
appropriately.

I'm not sure how common RandR v1.1 is these days. If the full support
for the old protocol doesn't seem to be worth the effort, some better
logging should be added. Alternatively, could gdmgreeter fall back to
gdmlogin if the server supports only the old RandR protocol version?

Workaround: switch to gdmlogin. (Called plain with facebrowser in
gdmsetup)

[Bug 296075] [NEW] Gnome-Power-Manager hangs during general use

2008-11-09 Thread Mark Baran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

In the latest Ubuntu release, Intrepid Ibex, the Gnome Power Manager has
a tedency to hang for a very long time when it enters the function
do_nanosleep (as reported by Intel Powertop), showing generally
unstable behavior. Moreover, gnome-power-manager also hangs when a
battery is plugged in or out. Ironically, Powertop also notes that
gnome-power-manager is the leading cause of battery life reducing
interrupts when gnome-power-manager hangs itself. Solving the hang may
therefore also help my battery life.

Researching the problem on the internet, it seems this bug may be in the
kernel, fixed by a patch to ACPI EC subsystem. This thread seems to
indicate that these timer problems were solved in the latest kernel
iteration.
My laptop is the same model, an Acer Aspire One. Perhaps the ACPI EC
patch could be backported to the current Ibex kernel.

Gnome-Do, which also seems to sometimes enter do_nanosleep has a similar
hanging problem, so that also might be related.

I am using the latest Ubuntu release, Intrepid Ibex, with all the latest
updates installed.

[Bug 270700] Re: rhythmbox freezes(sound keeps playing) after selecting position on the timeline-bar with crossfading on

verification-done

Tested with rhythmbox 0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.1 from intrepid-
updates, and immediately reproduced the problem again with xfade on
(rhythmbox froze).

Tested with rhythmbox 0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.2 from intrepid-
proposed, and I can successfully navigate a song without any freezing or
other negative effects (tested over 100 navigations). Crossfade only
applies on song changes, not within a song when navigating. It also
takes a second to start playing the newly navigated position (compared
to instantly without xfade), but this is a very minor problem compared
to the freezing bug which has now been fixed.

[Bug 241991] [NEW] submenu expansion delay

2008-11-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In the top panel of the GNOME desktop, say I have clicked on the
Applications menu. This brings up a list of menu items. Now I move the
mouse pointer down to the Internet menu item and I expect the
Internet submenu to appear. However, sometimes the system will get
preoccupied with loading the Accessories submenu as I move my mouse
cursor past it.

Result: If it is still loading that submenu by the time my cursor has
reached the Internet menu item, it will take a second or two before
the system realizes that it has to expand the Internet submenu since
that is what my cursor is currently hovering on.

Expected result: The expected behavior is for the system to immediately
start loading whatever submenu the user's mouse pointer is currently
hovering on, rather than impose a delay if a submenu you have moused
over is still in the process of being loaded.

I consciously notice this issue most often in the Applications menu and
the System menu of the top GNOME panel. However, I suspect it is a GTK
bug and thus might affect any GTK menu in the system. This bug is not a
huge issue, but it is slightly annoying and does increase the perceived
latency of the menu system from the user's standpoint.

I am using libgtk2.0-0 2.12.9-3ubuntu4 under Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron).

[Bug 296130] [NEW] Brightness controls on ThinkPad X60s not working

2008-11-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This is an issue, using 8.10 on a ThinkPad X60s laptop.

When running on battery, controlling screen brightness is a problem.
Often when pressing the Fn+{Home,End} there will be a delay of a few
seconds before it reacts to the key being pressed.

In addition, the screen will slowly dim and then brighten again, on its
own without any sort of user input.

A third sympton of something wrong (which might be unrelated) is that a
square on the screen when running on battery will not update. The square
is always on the same position on the screen. After a minute or so, the
square will update again.

None of these problems existed on 8.04.

I thought this might have been an issue with gnome-power-manager, but I
am now no longer sure. I mistakenly this issue as a ticket (with bug-
buddy) to the Gnome ticketing system as

Re: [Bug 292715] Re: GDM failure on Toshiba Satellite M30X (Intrepid)

2008-11-09 Thread catiboj

I had Hardy working correctly. When I upgraded to Intrepid, it won't boot to
X.
It dumped me on the command line.

After I filed the bug, I installed Kubuntu over the failed install
(didn't reformat) and it worked fine.

I suspect the issue was due to the leftover restricted ATI driver from Hardy.
Could you please point me to some material that details the changes to the
ATI driver ?
Would upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid remove the restricted ATI driver ?

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards

2008-11-09 Thread Filippo Argiolas
zoomy942, the relevant part of that thread (the one about uvcvideo driver)
suggests to install latest trunk from uvcvideo svn.
That's the latest version before uvcvideo was included in mainline kernel
(2.27) and probably the same (or almost the same) one included in Hardy.

If it fixes the issue it's just one more evidence that Cheese is not involved
at all with this thing and it is a driver/kernel fault only.
There were many changes in webcam drivers with 2.27 kernels, it is likely that
some regression went in too.

[Bug 296013] [NEW] Rhythmbox repeatedly downloads podcasts from podibooks

2008-11-09 Thread ShawnD
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Podcasts from podiobooks.com repeatedly download, even if the exact
episode is already there.

Other podcasts (CBC, NPR, escapepod, etc.) work fine.

Every time rhythmbox is started, or when it re-checks the podcasts
hourly, it downloads the most recent episode, even if it is already
downloaded.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Sign up at podibooks.com and subscribe to an audiobook (Free)
2. Add the personal RSS feed to rhythmbox
3. Wait

Expected behaviour: Each episode is only downloaded once.

A screenshot is attached.

System Information:
Ubuntu 8.10 with all current updates

[Bug 270203] Re: When connecting a portable player, RB should show its contents

2008-11-09 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Thanks for your feedback on this. In my case, my MTP device is not
automatically mounted by nautilus and I can't browse it before opening
rhythmbox. What happens if you umount the MTP device before opening
rhythmbox? Because if the MTP device is still mounted and used by
nautilus, that sounds logical that rhythmbox won't be able to
communicate with the device.
