Black and white thinking is the sure sign of addictive thinking. Why

It just goes to show

Heh. There's an Arther C. Clarke novel where a sci-fi writer gets to
go into space and while he's sitting at the NASA waiting room he
picks up an old sci-fi magazine and starts browsing. He's more than
halfway through a short story before he realizes that HE wrote the
story decades ago and hadn't noticed the byline.

Maybe it's time for both of you to quit - you already trashed Usenet

take a sabbatical from posting, then, in a year or two, return here

There are now - I got them from the guidelines at Yahoo! FairfieldLife

However, it's obvious that you follow no guidelines or rules, except
your own. You need to get some smarts - you're not supposed to be
abusing TMers and turning their newsgroups into your own political
propaganda platform.

My name isn't "Willytex", Barry, but in fact, neither of you have read
Paul's book. In fact, you two hypocrites have failed to read a single
book I've discussed on Usenet in the past five years, not the least
the only published biography of the Maharishi. Maybe it's time for you
two to get some smarts - some of us TMers are getting sick and tired
of you guys taking over newsgroups and posting political rants - when
you haven't even read the TMers basic library.

However, you have apparently read, at least once, "Surfing the
Himalayas" by Freddy Lenz.

Well, there's one lie. I haven't "refused to
answer" Shemp's question, as I've already noted.

Plus the REALLY STUPID lie that Barry in this
post was trying to call attention to my response
to Shemp's question, when it was actually about Paul.

See what I mean about rattled?

> Not to mention diverting attention away from the
> fact that she's ragging on the author of a book

> to read his book, as Willytex pointed out.

And there's another, double-barrelled. First,
finding snarky bits, even on a quick skim, in a
book whose author claims to be objective is
indeed grounds for a hypocrisy charge.

But second, I've repeatedly made it clear that
*most* of my hypocrisy charge against Paul is based
on his posts to this and several other forums, not
on his book.

Barry's well aware of this.

> As for "lying," I did say 'her' rather than 'his'
> when referring to the book in question. Mea culpa.
> But I suspect that most people would consider that
> a grammatical error caused by having to rush off
> to work rather than a lie, but hey!, Judy's the
> expert here...if she says you a liar, then you
> are one. :-)

And another lie. I wasn't referring to Barry's error
as a lie, but rather to his claim that my "rants
against Paul" had to do with his book rather than
with his posts, as noted above.

Again, Barry knows this. He just hopes he can fool
readers who haven't been paying close attention.

> You can see why I backslide from time to time and
> interact with her...she's just so amusing sometimes.
> But I admit it...I bad...back to trying to ignore
> her silliness...

This is all so absolutely typical of Barry's behavior
on alt.m.t. He's been trying to create a different
image of himself on FFL, but when the chips are down,
he reverts to type, exposing himself for the thoroughly
dishonest phony he is.

And you can always tell when Judy is trying to
divert attention from the fact that she refuses
to answer Shemp's easy question because she seizes
on any and all nitpicks possible to do so.

Not to mention diverting attention away from the
fact that she's ragging on the author of a book
about his hypocrisy when she hasn't ever bothered
to read his book, as Willytex pointed out.

As for "lying," I did say 'her' rather than 'his'
when referring to the book in question. Mea culpa.
But I suspect that most people would consider that
a grammatical error caused by having to rush off
to work rather than a lie, but hey!, Judy's the
expert here...if she says you a liar, then you
are one. :-)

You can see why I backslide from time to time and
interact with her...she's just so amusing sometimes.
But I admit it...I bad...back to trying to ignore
her silliness...

Actually, if *I* had written a book, I probably
would have long since finished reading it.

(You can always tell when Barry's rattled; his
lies become more and more extreme and he begins

And where is this, again?

And remember, its not just an arbitrary different idea that triggers
a defense mechanism, but one that challenges an important assumption.
Different people and different cultures have different important
assumptions.

You cuss someone you just met in the US and they might be terribly
offended. You call someone "you" in Japan unless you're their lover
or addressing a large group of people simultaneously and you may get
the same reaction.

For once, Willytex is right on. I encounter the same
thing with my book. Some people go into it looking
for something to dislike, something that verifies
their existing assumptions, and stop reading the
moment they find it.

I'll believe Judy's rants against Paul the day she
actually announces she finished reading her book.
Until then, she falls into the category above.

Yes, just like a.m.t. The attempt to portray a

I am saying, Yes, that the *need* for "psychological
defense mechanisms" seems to be different from country
to country. One only resorts to attacks when one's
personal beliefs are challenged if one is so attached
to those beliefs that one cannot distinguish them from
oneself. This is a characteristic I find *far* more
prevalent in the black-and-white thinking, ignorant-

Mia didn't return. She went to Goa with Maharishi's Brahmachari's trailing
her, then left India. Nancy and her son went on a tiger hunt in the middle
of the TTC, then returned, hence the song:

Hey, Bungalow Bill
What did you kill
Bungalow Bill? (2x)

When out tiger hunting with his elephantine gun
In case of accidents he always took his mom
He's the all American bullet-headed saxon mother's son.
All the children sing

Hey Bungalow Bill
What did you kill
Bungalow Bill? (2x)

Deep in the jungle where the mighty tiger lies
Bill and his elephants were taken by surprise
So Captain Marvel zapped him right between the eyes
All the children sing

Hey, Bungalow Bill
What did you kill
Bungalow Bill? (2x)

The children asked him if to kill was not a sin
But when he looked so fierce, his mummy butted in
If looks could kill it would have been us instead of him
All the children sing

Hey, Bungalow Bill
What did you kill
Bungalow Bill? (8x) (fade out)

For another interesting perspective on the whole Mia/Maha episode,
read Nancy Cooke de Herrera's "Beyond Gurus". Going on memory, it
appears that after the hugging incident, Mia was quite vocal that
something untoward had happened and then she left the compound to go
on Safari somewhere (with Bungalo Bill?). But she in fact returned
at some later time, perhaps a few days or weeks later. And I think
the point that Nancy Cooke was trying to make was: if MMY had indeed
hit on her the way she claimed, why then return to the course?
Wouldn't a "victim" want to be done with the whole thing?

What's with the hug after meditation...is it, as Mia said Prudence
said to her that it is a great honor to be touched after meditation

It has been discussed here often. Are public figures who base their
reputations in part on their having lived celibate lives entitled to privacy
if they haven't actually done so? Maybe. Maybe not. Is general, I try to
avoid chiming in on the topic these days. But since it was being discussed,
I stooped.

After MMY dies, I believe alot of things will normalize.

Indeed, once that happens you're going to get alot of TBers acting the

It's sad if MMY has been unable to keepit in his dhoti, given his
Bramacharyi status. While its true he never claimed celibacy once he
came to the west, it shows a certain lack of self-control, if true.

However, how do you know that ANY of the stories in the sexy sadie file

[FairfieldLife] Re: To set The Beatles' TM record straight

2005-09-05 Thread Patrick Gillam
For a long time I dismissed the Mia Farrow/Maharishi
story for all the reasons one dismisses it -- it was a
misunderstanding; Magic Alex fabricated the rumor to
regain his drug customers; Mia fabricated the story for
reasons known only to Mia.

I *really* dismissed the allegations of impropriety in
1997 when Farrow's book came out and Terry Gross
interviewed her on public radio's "Fresh Air." The whole
interview was about all the men who've treated her badly.

Basically, every man in Mia Farrow's life has screwed her,
or tried. Frank Sinatra and Woody Allen are merely the
best known. She is a magnet for male mistreatment.

Her biography really illustrates a life typified by being
preyed upon by men. It's spooky. So I figured, Maharishi
somehow got suckered into that Mia-Farrow-as-victim scene.

Convinced as I was of Maharishi's innocence, imagine
my surprise when I read the Sexy Sadie correspondence.
So Farrow may have been telling the truth after all! She
could be innocent or she could be a serial victim, but if
he fired on other women and Mia Farrow invites unwanted
attention (yes, I meant that the way I wrote it), it makes
sense he'd hit on her.

Before the Sexy Sadie file came into being, the Mia Farrow/
Maharishi story was an isolated incident I was inclined to
dismiss. Now I've read enough to dismiss the Farrow incident
not as unlikely, but as overkill. I've read enough that I don't
need it.

This isn't your finest moment, Rick - apparently you'll stoop to any
level to bash the Maharishi - up to and including discussing his
private sex life, or lack thereof. Maybe it's time for someone else to
moderate this forum. Is this supposed to be a family-oriented
discussion group? Are there any rules on this forum?

So, you haven't read Paul's book.

But, isn't it a fact that the parts you read you read on the Internet.
Exactly which parts of the book do you consider to be snarky?

You are supposed to read the book BEFORE you make your comments!

I agree. The Mia Farrow incident is only significant in light of all the
other incidents, and as such is still insignificant. Nothing happened. He
didn't even get to first base. Of course, on many other occasions, with
other partners, he hit home runs.

Just like the old days on alt.m.t. That was

The oh-so-excellent spin-doctoring PR arm of the TMO?

Karl Rove is our leader.

No, they most certainly are not "virtually

I don't believe I ever said Paul had an anti-TM
bias.

As you know, I skimmed a few chapters in Paul's
book and found some pretty snarky remarks
concerning MMY.

But it's Paul's posts here, and on alt.m.t, and on
TMNews and TMControversy where his anti-MMY bias
is most evident. The book per se is largely
irrelevant in light of those comments.

I haven't read the book either, but based on what he's been saying

these days.

I would guess the same frustration that many feel when they see the TMO
going in ways they don't believe are good, based on what they think is
best for the TMO.

My attitude is simply that its MMY's organization to nurture or destroy
as he sees fit. Since the whole thing hasn't played out yet (he's still
alive, as an imporant "for instance), I reserve judgement on what will
happen to the TMO in the next few years.

That's wild. She already says that she's disoriented and she bases
the entire incident on this. I would think that there was non-stop
rounding going on during that time, and "disoriented" for some people
included falling down stairs and continuing ontheir way without even
noticing that they had just fallen down the stairs(actual incident
relatedto me years ago).

IOW, she may have been accosted or was starting to fall over and
misinterpreted what happened, or something else entirely. You really
can't say ANYTHING based on this incident.

That might be. But Paul's own language suggests bias on his part,
IMHO.

I missed that. Is he trying to say that anyone who disagrees with him

Are you saying that psychological defense mechanisms are different in
different countries? That's alot of scientific kudos and awards waiting

For most people, "fair and resonably open-minded," means "they agree
with me."

Actually, I'd say for everyone, but I haven't met "everyone."

[FairfieldLife] Re: To set The Beatles' TM record straight

2005-09-05 Thread Premanand Paul Mason
'John, John,' the guru called out mournfully. 'Please don't leave me!
Come back, come back!'
For the second time today I post this quote from Peter Shotton
biography of John Lennon.

Really, calling out mournfully and whining are virtually synonymous
in the English language Lawson.

Calling someone a whiner is bias, by definition.

Characterizing someone as "whining" isn't a fact, but a value-
judgement...

Perhaps, but only people who are already concerned about this show
any interest anyway. Paul claims non-bias, but that's obviously
untrue. He wasn't commissioned to write his books, now was he?

Have you read his book, Judith? From that reading I would have to
say that, if anything, it is a pro-TM bias.

You think Paul's feelings for MMY are about 180 degrees
from "anti-MMY bias"?

What to give that just a *little* more thought, Shemp?

nevertheless, replace my references to "hate" with "anti-MMY bias"

Yeah, but Barry, your notions of how I act are
wrong. You just described me as attempting to
demonize someone whose opinions were different
from mine; then you go on to cite my opinion of
MMY as the one presumably in question here.

I'm not criticizing Paul for his anti-MMY bias.
I'm criticizing him for not being up-front about
it.

If I were into demonizing those whose opinions were
different from mine, I'd have to demonize the vast
majority of the people on this forum, but I don't,
because they're honest and up front about their
biases.

Paul is not.

Nor am I anywhere near as "strongly positive" about
MMY as you appear to want to believe.

You demonize me because I've been so critical of
your own hypocrisy and phoniness, but the only
way you can do that is to paint me as a fanatical
true believer who demonizes others because what
they say conflicts with my beliefs. That's simply
not so; that's a tale you've invented to try to
discredit my criticisms of you.

You want to see a nasty piece of work, Barry,
look in the mirror. They don't come much nastier.

Pay attention, Shemp. "Hate" was not a word I used.

The thing you don't understand, Judy, is the same
thing that Maharishi didn't understand in Rishikesh
w.r.t. the Beatles. I don't not respect you because
of your opinions. Many people here genuinely feel
as strongly positive about Maharishi as you do, and
I've never given them any shit about it.

I don't respect you because of your *actions*. You
are a nasty piece of work. If you agreed with every
one of my opinions and still acted towards others
the way you do, I'd *still* think you were a nasty
piece of work, and say so.

Judy, you are, simply, certifiable.

Have you read Paul's book?

I have and the impression I got is that his feelings for MMY are
about 180 degrees from "hate".

Only a fanatic would describe an individual who demonstrates
anything less than unconditional, unthinking obeisance to a teacher
as "hate".

We've known about the Beatles having blown him off
as a charlatan for many years; it's not in dispute.
Whether it was because of his own actions remains
murky, as does the question of whether he "learned
anything," and if so what it was.

Paul is certainly welcome to express his opinion on
the murky points, as are you; I don't happen to find
those points as overwhelmingly significant as the two
of you seem to. They don't matter to me a whole lot
either way.

As I said, the issue that prompted my remarks to
Paul is that of Paul's hypocrisy. If he'd just
'fess up to his anti-MMY bias and be straightforwardly
critical like most of the rest of the folks here,
I wouldn't have spoken up.

No author, no matter how objective he claims to be (and Paul isn't
even claiming to be objective), speculates about things such as
mental states.

Some historians -- such as Woodward and Bernstein and that English
guy who was the official biographer of Ronald Reagan -- not only
surmise in their works what their subjects were thinking but
actually put down words that they thought they said.

It is good to read this account of Mia Farrow. I was initiated in

Mia Farrow's own take on HER incident with MMY (from her book "What
falls away", p. 128):

"Now we will meditate in my 'cave'," said Maharishi, and I followed
him down steep wooden steps into a dark, humid little cellar room
that smelled of sandalwood. It was my first time in his cave: there
was a small shrine with flowers and a picture of Guru Dev,
Maharishi's dead teacher, and a carpet on which we settled ourselves
in the lotus position to meditate. After twenty or so minutes we
were getting to our feet, still facing each other, but as I'm
usually a little disoriented after meditation, I was blinking at his
beard when suddenly I became aware of two surprisingly male, hairy
arms going around me. I panicked, and shot up the stairs,
apologizing all the way. I flew out into the open air, and ran as
fast as I could to Prudy's room, where she was meditating of
course. I blurted out something about Maharishi's cave, and arms,
and beard, and she said, It's an honor to be touched by a holy man
after meditation, a tradition. Furthermore, at my level of
consciousness,if Jesus Christ Himself had embraced me, I would have
misinterpreted it.

But I was including TMnews, I had a couple of out-to-lunchers lunge
into me. But in essence we appear to agree. Actually, it gets very
obvious when I am saying something that threatens someone's belief
system, other times when it's just about quotations from Guru Dev
people tend to be very well behaved, even the half dozen cracked eggs.

According to Cynthia Lennon, Maharishi sat outside the hut.
Just another small detail of very many history-bendings we will hear

The "issue," which you are studiously trying to
avoid, is that the Beatles blew him off as a
charlatan and a Bad Bet because of his own actions
and his reaction to it was to avoid learning any-
thing from the experience.

Aha! The true origin of his "Oh my hut!" story. :-)

If Paul can carefully avoid dealing straightforwardly
with the issue of his bias, instead taking the time to
"prove" to me that MMY was sitting in a shelter that
used some grass in its construction to justify his use
of the term "grass hut," I think it's OK for me to
press him on the function of the "hut" ("hut" being a
term that is typically used to describe a mean dwelling
place, as opposed to what now appears to have been
something more like a garden gazebo).

Notice that Paul has failed to respond to the observation
that the term "whining" and the phrase "let pride stand
in the way" hardly constitute "matters of fact," which is
what he had claimed to be dealing with, nor to my point
about his rhetorical questions.

The issue isn't where MMY was sitting; the issue is
Paul's refusal to admit to his obvious anti-MMY bias,
even on this forum, where anti-MMY bias is the rule
rather than the exception.

I hear what your saying - more info on the hut - leave out the stuff
about The Beatles feeling let down and that they had been led to
believe there was more to him than there was - S ..the story goes
that he wasn't taken with the 'bungalow' that had been built for him in
his absence, so he insisted on going to his hut.

Rick, with all due respect, if you really believe
this, you've either been in Fairfield too long or
in America too long.

"Resort" to personal attacks? It's their first reaction.

Mr. Creme-filled-donut-head doesn't actually *have* a
mind, as far as I can tell. He just repeats what he's
been told by the guy who is famous for telling people
anything that fuels their elitism. So anything he says
you can just write off.

What is sadder is when the first reaction of people who
obviously *do* have brains is to attempt to demonize
those whose *opinions* differ from theirs. A mind is
a terrible thing to waste.

What is downright laughable is when one of those people
posts an article critical of Karl Rove, completely
unaware that the two of them could hardly be more alike
in their tactics and in their sensibilities if they had
graduated in the same class from Nasty Piece Of Work
University.

This is a personal attack based on speculation. There is even
speculation about mental states ie. Pride in the case of Maharishi. So
it is making negative assumptions in an editorial way rather than
sticking to facts. You haven't added any clarity to this old story and
I question the salubrity of your motivation in bothering to bring it
up now.
