User Defined Hotkeys
You can edit the "cmds.cfg" file if you want to change the ESCAPE shortcut sequences. How can I use variables in the autonumber format of paragraphs?

The run-in paragraph method does not work for me unfortunately (the specific numbered paragraph is in a table element, so there isn't any prior paragraph that I can use - assuming I am understanding your description correctly). But, luckily, so far, my experiments with $volnum are working ... I have gained some experience with doing this, but some new questions have arisen (so I will send this back to the entire list too). 1. I changed the value of the Volume (hence the variable volnum) using the "Numbering Property" of the file. I had to use the "Text" format, since the others (including the default "Numeric") did not allow for the decimal period in "22.5" to be used. My key question ... just to confirm ... is this okay to use this method, i.e., changing the Volume property (and hence the $volnum variable) without the likelihood of the $volnum variable being used in ways - elsewhere in FrameMaker, etc. - that could cause me problems? I don't use it in my document itself ... 2. I changed the Volume property on the first file in the book to "22.5", and then changed the rest of the files to "Use Same Number as Previous File" ... this worked after I did a "Edit->Update Book" (otherwise, it did not!). Is it unusual to have to *do* the "Edit->Update Book" to get this setting to "take" or is this normal? 3. Does anyone know if the "BookVars" built-in from Leximation supports setting the $volnum variable or Volume property from their .ini input file? This would simplify life a lot ... I change book-level variables all the time using BookVars and it would be great to change this "system" variable through the same control method! Thanks! Z

A weird one. I have a document with a cover page that contains the document title. The title is the first paragraph in the document, but in the generated PDF, the title appears as the last bookmark. Why? How do I make the doc title show up as the first bookmark? (without having to move it manually in Acrobat) [FrameMaker 6.0p405] [Acrobat Professional 7.0.2] Eli.

Connection between Table Designer and Paragraph Designer?
Hi Eva As Rick said, you cannot specify different formats for different rows, but this does not mean that you cannot apply autonumbering to the rows of your Step-Action tables (I guess this is an Information Mapping template?). You can do this as follows: 1. Use the InstructionNumber Paragraph Tag only (this is a paratag, not a table tag) and put this in the left cell of the first body row. 2. In the table header row, use autonumbering for the cell which has the text "Step". You may want to create a dedicated paratag for this, in which you reset the numbering to zero. I use the tag z_steptitle for this, to make sure that the numbering in my Step-Action tables always restarts at 1. 3. Open the Table Designer and click Update All. All Step-Action tables which you insert from now on will (or should) have correct autonumbering. To test this, insert another Step-Action table and add some rows. Some other tips: - Use a single tag only for numbering. "NumberedFirst" and "Numbered" is a no-no because you are using two different tags for something which is basically one and the same thing: numbered steps. If you want to reset the numbering for some reason, you can do this with a stem sentence (and corresponding tag). - Don't use Step-Action tables. Use simple numbered lists instead. A Step-Action table doesn't add value to your content, on the contrary. Moreover, it takes some gymnastics to put a table in a table (embedded if-then tables) in FrameMaker. Inserting an if-then table in a numbered list is a lot easier. - Don't use Information Mapping. It's a proprietary (and thus restrictive) information model. Use DITA instead, open, freely available and supported by all major editors and content management systems. See also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_Information_Typing_Architecture If you cannot get the autonumbering of your table right, just send me 1 FM file and I will fix it for you (free of charge). Good luck. I went from FM 6 to FM 8 and did not have any problems. I like the track changes feature and conditional text changes. Re: Great Leap
Hi Murray We also upgraded from FM6 to FM8 (on Win XP and 2000). I don't remember encountering any problems. I tested FM8 for our Tech Pubs group, and I made the following notes about what I noticed was different: * The Page Up and Page Down keys move the file up or down by one screen, not by one page. If you don't like this you can use the customui.cfg file to change it. * The Print > PDF Setup dialog has more options. * "Document Info" (for a PDF file) is no longer set from the Print > PDF Setup dialog. To enter Document Info in FM8: o from an open file select File > File Info o from a book select the file(s) and select File > File info, or right click on the selected file(s) and select File Info. * When selecting a font from the drop-down list in Paragraph Designer > Default Font > Family, you get a pop-up showing the font name in that font. * The file names in the book window are in a smaller font, or else they just look smaller because they're not bold anymore. * The page background in an open file now picks up the "Window" background colour from your Windows colour scheme. * The tool bar icons are slightly different. * If you get sick of the "Undo history will be lost" warning popping up every time you close and save a file, you can turn it off in File > Preferences > General. I don't think you will have any problems, but you should probably do some testing first. Hot Keys & Macros
Hi, Donald: As you probably know, nothing on the Internet ever dies, and this includes the WordStar keystroke habits embedded in the cultural unconscious of many among us. FrameMaker keystroke shortcuts are not the same as WS, though some of Windows are quite similar. Instead of ^S ^D ^E and ^X for character left, right, and line up, down, arrow keys do it. Look up keystrokes in FM help, and framemaker keystrokes and framemaker keystroke shortcuts on Google to find some charts and listings of some of the many things that you can do in FM without a mouse. Also, open a copy of the command text files in the configui folder under your FM installation directory, to see listings of the many commands and their keystrokes built into FM. Read about how to create your own, as well as customizing menus, in the PDF Customizing Framemaker, also under the FM installation directory. To truly mimic WS commands, search for a third-party keystroke macro recorder. HTH Regards, Peter Gold KnowHow ProServices On Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 1:08 PM, Donlad W. Connection between Table Designer and Paragraph Designer?
Hi Eva, You can't specify different formats for subsequent rows; only the first row of each type can be set. Lines are set in the Ruling tab of the Table Designer. You can create and edit ruling formats by choosing Table > Custom Ruling & Shading. Then click the Edit Ruling Style button. You can edit the "cmds.cfg" file if you want to change the ESCAPE shortcut sequences. Hot Keys & Macros
Rick Q. et al: I recently gave up on converting a one-file book to a master/sub-document group in MSWord because of the infuriating problems thus created. Having previously self published a rather complicated book through Framemaker 7.2, I decided to migrate the book now and have done with it. I am almost over the re-learning curve and have solved all the formatting and numbering problems. However, what I have given up are the macro/hotkeys which I had developed in Word that emulated my old Worstar navigation and editing hotkeys. Without them, I'm stuck with creating a Temp.doc in Word, composing within it, saving it, and then importing it into my Frame book. If I purchased FrameScript, could I create the same macros? Or must I change my OS to Unix and purchase the Unix version of Framemaker? Can't really afford either choice, but in case my situation improves, I would like to know my options. ~ Don Spencer ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

Re: Connection between Table Designer and Paragraph Designer?
Good luck. A weird one. I have a document with a cover page that contains the document title. The title is the first paragraph in the document, but in the generated PDF, the title appears as the last bookmark.
