Theoretically, it's a framework to create any kind of documentation, from paper parts lists to maintenance procedures with 3D graphics on your iPhone, all from information modules stored in a central database. It's a nice vision of the future, but getting from here to there is the big (expensive) problem. FrameMaker 10 seems to have quite a lot of S1000D support built in, such as the means to interact with a common source database and the ability to validate data modules against business rules, etc., but we are having trouble making any practical use of it. Is anyone offering a course yet on using FrameMaker to support an S1000D implementation? We have been to some free seminars and watched plenty of Webinars, but they were mostly sales pitches on the benefits of the standard without any practical value. We need to move ahead with a real solution, because we have customers that are starting to request documentation that meets the new standard. I would love to hear from any of you trainers about what resources you have available. We would really like to keep using FrameMaker as the basis for our documentation, rather than start with something completely new. It would be a big plus if the training was available in the Seattle area. We?re coming up to speed on QuickBasic after working in a C dialect for years on unrelated work, so a sidestep to VBA won?t kill us. But we?d rather drive a production car than a jalopy if we can pay the sticker price. Here are answers to the software purchasing questions... Front Runner is also an Adobe Software Reseller... To answer Jim Pinkham's question... If your company purchased a Maintenance package with FrameMaker you would get updates/upgrades as they become available, provided the Maintenance is current. To answer Steve Johnson's question... If a customer wants to do backward licensing, they order the current version volume license of the product and the old ESD (Electronic Software Download - one version back). Then they call Adobe Customer Care at 800-443-8158 to request a serial number that matches the ESD. They will need to provide the Adobe order number for the current version order. Also, if they purchased an upgrade license (for example, CS3 to CS5), they will also need to provide the serial number of the original product they are upgrading from. It takes a few days to get the old serial number. This is a much easier process for someone who already has some volume licenses of the product they want to install and just needs to buy more of them. They dont need to buy the old ESD unless they dont already have the old media. And they dont need to call for a serial number; they just use the old serial number they already have to install on additional workstations. Hi Pat, The best FrameMaker book on the market for Structured FrameMaker are Scriptorium's books written by Sarah O'Keefe. Scriptorium continues to have interest in both their Frame 7 and 8 books for both unstructured and structured FrameMaker. People looking to implement a structure application in FrameMaker still look to Scriptorium's Frame 7 book. The same holds true for unstructured applications and their Frame 8 book. Many of the updates for Frame 9 relate to the DITA application framework. Most are not visible to the user. There was an update to the look of the user interface. While Scriptorium's book does not have screen images of the Frame 9 application, FrameMaker's dialog functions remain almost completely unchanged. A recent purchaser of their book noted that Adobe sent him Scriptorium's way--for the best resource available. We at Front Runner use Scriptorium's books as reference materials for our FrameMaker training we offer! If you require formal, hands-on training.
