Hi, Your last name is the interesting part of this lol. I'm not sure what eloquence decided to do with the z. Best Regards, Hayden -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Milos Przic Sent: Wednesday, July 20, 2011 7:44 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Castaways, translated in to other languages. Hi Jeremy, Nice work! Don't know how much time I am going to spend on that having in mind my work and my studies, but I plan to translate the game in Serbian. Now, immediately there are two little problems with that. The first one is unicode. What about the letters that doesn't exist in english? the second problem are the names. In Serbian, and in some other languages, the foreign names are not being written as in the original languages either because of the pronounce or because the translation language doesn't have the letters for the name. Serbian, for example, doesn't have and doesn't use the letter y or x. The thing should be confusing especially when the sinthesizers read out loud the names, as they read by default a name in a way that the combination of letters would be pronounced in other languages. So the english eloquence reads my name Milos, or even Milo (it depends on a user's codepage), and it should be pronounced Milosh (I wrote it so that the american english eloquence speaks it right, or almost right). The last name is way too hard. :) So if you can, do the same with the base of names so that we who have to translate, or better said, transcribe them could do it. Thanks, and best regards! Re: [Audyssey] Castaways, translated in to other languages.
Lol, there's no z in my last name actually. :) The game dumped my name into that text file automatically. Anything that doesn't seem like it should be translated, like my name for example, can just be left as it is. It won't actually end up changing my name in the game anyways. My code is set up to protect certain words, like Aprone, Jeremy, and Kaldobsky, just so that no one can replace them with their own name, to try and claim credit for my game, haha. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. To be honest, I'm surprised people notice all that many repeated names. I've actually noticed a couple. For instance one game got rather confusing when I had dominick the cook, and dominick the taylor, sinse one was obviously very essential, while the other wasn't. I usually find when the population gets above 40 or so, one repeate at the least will as like as not happen. Beware the grue! Hey guys, I'm still busy coding the next version, but I've finished one of the pieces and it will require help from some of you! As some of you know, I only speak English, and some people have contacted me because they would like to see Castaways translated into other languages. I already have someone willing to do a French translation, but if you know other languages, and are willing to help, I'd appreciate it! Here is how it works. Download this text file. www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/castawayslang.zip Inside, you will find every piece of dialog Castaways displays, although they are broken into pieces. There are 2 copies of each line, and it is important that the first line is left in English, exactly as it is written. The line under it, is to be replaced with a translation. If there is punctuation in the original line, try to keep it in the translated line as well. There are some places where similar messages seem like a bit of a waste. Some people may wonder why we don't just translate each word individually, but here is why I am doing it this way. If I change all of the words from English, to another language, the way it is worded will no longer sound natural. Different languages arrange words differently, and sometimes extra words, or less words, are needed to get the right message across. By letting you change an entire sentence, you can make it sound correct, in the new language. When finished, you should have the original English line, and the new translated line under it. Please email the finished files back to me, and I will handle the rest. Please be mindful of capital letters and spelling. If you decide to translate this into another language, please post on here what language you are doing. This will help ensure, others do not spend time doing the exact same one. When these are all handed back in, I will probably post them so that everyone can give them a final check, before they officially go into the game. Re: [Audyssey] Castaways, translated in to other languages.
Milos, that is a very good point. I had simply assumed that the names could be left as they are, because even if they are clearly foreign names, they still sound like names. I'll have to give this some thought. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
