15415 – I'm hearing a weak station here now (2250 UTC) with male and female
announcers in Portuguese. This is consistent with the reported return of R.
Clube de Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo. (Art Delibert, Maryland)

[HCDX] Scam email from "Glenn Dx"

2024-01-11 Thread Arthur Delibert
A word of warning to all – I just received an email purportedly from "Glenn

into opening it and clicking on the attachments. But it's actually from some
strange and unrecognizable email address. So if you see it, delete it.

9840 and 12020 -- Voice of Vietnam is missing this morning from these two of
its usual frequencies. Together with yesterday's absence from 11885, it has
me concerned that they may be dropping their non-Vietnamese language
services. Anyone have any info about it? They do seem to be on 11720 in
Vietnamese, competing with CRI.

Hello there,

I'm clearly hearing Voice of Vietnam broadcasting in French on 9730 right now.
Talking about the history of relationship with Cuba and Castro.
Well, QRM from CRI broadcasting continuous music on the same frequency, but
with some AM sync I can pull them off.

Realistically, SWLs have no economic or political influence and it is even less
compared to the financial industry. Short wave broadcasting, sad to say, is
considered a remnant of a bygone era super ceded by the internet and the
computer. If (THE BIG IF) the technology advocated in this petition ,and there
is quite a lot of technology being advocated,, actually works as it is supposed
to, there is little to worry about except brief bursts of noise which are not
harmful interference. The report does state that over years of testing not
one verifiable interference report was received. Verifiable is defined among
other things as getting the call sign of the interfering station. Getting an
ID on a frequency agile brief burst of data of an unknown mode of transmission
does not sound like an easy thing to do. Thanks to Arthur and Zack for their
comments. Bill Smith, Douglas, MA

Re: [HCDX] SMC petition (continued)

2023-07-24 Thread Arthur Delibert
Can't speak to these petitioners in particular, but many financial service
companies have a history in many areas of operations of first getting the
necessary licenses and then pushing the envelope. Any lawyer could drive a
truck through the holes in these subjective definitions of "harmful
interference." Among other things, very few SW BCs are now beamed to North
America. Would these people consider themselves free to interfere with our
reception of BCs intended for other parts of the world that listeners in NA
consider great DX? Just asking.

Topic: Co-existence (page 19) says co-channel interference could occur at some
times and places, but is sufficiently limited to enable preventing of harmful
(harmful is in italics) interference, provided licensees are granted multiple
2-25 band frequencies . . . and licensees use frequency – agile techniques.
Footnote 50: defines harmful interference as interference which endangers a
radio navigation service or of other safety services, or seriously degrades,
obstructs, or repeatedly interrupts a radio service operating in accordance
with (the ITU) radio regulations. So what they are warranting is no harmful
interference if they get what they need. Bill Smith, Douglas, MA

They skip the ham bands, like so many other services do. I used to work
with a vertically-incident ionosonde that scanned 2.0 through 30+ MHz. It
was programmed to skip the ham bands and the WWV frequencies. But it only
stayed on a given frequency for such a short time that I doubt it caused
any interference.

The HAARP facility also used frequency-scanning transmissions that skipped
over the ham bands.

Re: [HCDX] Shortwave News

2023-05-20 Thread Arthur Delibert
I suspect this is related to high-speed trading in the stock, bond and futures
markets. A number of large financial institutions have noted that there are
brief differences in the prices of various financial instruments between the
various markets -- for example, NY and Chicago. If they can act fast enough,
they can buy in the cheaper market and sell at a profit in the more expensive
market before the differences iron themselves out. These institutions have
invested a lot in high-speed internet connections between their offices
physically near the various markets so they can exploit these differences.
Looks like someone is going to try to speed things up by using a SW radio link.
Note that the FCC applications were filed with a request for confidential
treatment of certain details.

RTM has been missing from both 9835 and 11665 for several days (checking around

Re: [HCDX] Astonishment of people`s attitudes toward Remote SDRs

2022-08-09 Thread Arthur Delibert
Agree 100%. I don't think those people would have a problem if someone
reported their loggings from a DXpedition to a waterfront location, or from a
vacation house. Using a remote SDR is just a DXpedition without the travel..

Gary Pence

Hi Glenn, I'm 100% in agreement on what you wrote about people`s attitudes
towards remote SDRs experiences, somehow delegitimizing what someone else is
doing differently. I think it`s a pride thing, which is ingrained in the spirit
of competition that's gone on for a hundred years. Our equipment upgraded,
antennas got better, operating skill improved and knowledge amassed. As long as
we state how we`re using SDR, WHO CARES? So if you're one of those who
constantly has
to compare, then compare apples to apples; it`s your prerogative. But come on,
now, you don't know my circumstances. I appreciate your accepting the way I use
or express this wonderful hobby we all enjoy. 73 and good DX, however you do
it. Gary Pence / km5x [Dallas, who DXes exclusively with remote SDRs]

Hmm. What I heard was NOT the BBC.

It was an English language sports news program, with the English being
heavily accented.

Here is a link to their website where they list their shortwave broadcasts.

  https://betar.portal.gov.bd/site/page/fa7b75bb-dbe4-4da3-b9bc-654700ec9b77

I did not hear an ID. Mostly because of the heavily accented English.

I do not see a listing, WRTH, for the BBC WS on that frequency.

They did go off the air a few seconds before 1900 UTC

Dear Arthur,

Thank you for your message.

I also heard this new frequency at 1825-1857* in Vernacular here in Denmark
with SINPO 45444.
I heard it in // on one of the Kuwait Kiwi SDR with same strength.
At close down they announced their website: BBC Pashto.com.

Thus it is not a reactivated Zanzibar, but the BBC in Pashto on a new frequency.

[HCDX] Australia VOLMET?

2021-11-19 Thread Arthur Delibert
In the last few weeks, I am no longer hearing Australia VOLMET on either 6676
or 11387 kHz, even when the maritime weather broadcasts on 6230 and 6507
indicate very good propagation from that part of the world. The VOLMET used to
be a regular, morning and sometimes evenings. Are they off the air? Is it
permanent? 

Thanks.

[HCDX] Brazil Pirate on 6305 kHz?

2020-09-25 Thread Arthur Delibert
I sent this message to HCDX last night but it never appeared on the reflector;
maybe lost in the reported email snafu:

Hearing a pirate station on 6305 kHz, from 2320 this evening [i.e., Thursday
evening]. On the SAL antenna, it's clearly coming from the southeast, while
all the usual Europirates are coming from the northeast. So it doesn't seem to
be in Europe. Based on what I can hear of the language, I'm guessing Brazil.
Does anyone have info on this? Thanks. (Art Delibert, North Bethesda, MD,

Re: [HCDX] New Colombian 4940

Interesting. A couple times this past week, I have tuned one kHz below 4940 in
SSB mode to hear the heterodyne, and thought it had a bit of a warble, like
there were two stations there.

Manuel, thanks for your info. Last night I heard two stations on 4940kHz
between 2330-0045UTC (Sep12/13). Both with very weak signals here in the
middle of Europe. One of them had an endless religious talk by a man in
Spanish, I supposed it was Radio San Antonio from Peru (but not closing at
2400 as listed). The second station was mostly playing music, no ann heard.
A frequency difference between the stations was about 20Hz, the talking
station was the higher one. I gave it up at 0045, signals were getting
weaker and weaker as it usually happens in this area after some peak
conditions between ...2300-2400... (to South America).

COLOMBIA (presumed), 4940, new station, 0450-0635, 13-09, Spanish,
religious comments, Colombian song, more religious comments. The same
formant and same announcers as La Voz de tu Conciencia or Alcaravan
Radio, it seems that relaying its programs, 1 hour 25 minutes non stop
Martin Stendal sermon, film advertisement "Ahora, la película La Montaña

A quick skim thru it leads to my observations:

CUBA - there are many anomalies, but a few obvious:
Esperanto Sunday 1500-1530 not only 11760 but also 15140
Spanish 2100-0500 11800 has replaced 11850
English 2300-2400 7380 has replaced 11880

DENMARK - 5805 is already active

FRANCE --- RFPI via WRMI is in French, not English; or
mostly? Has anyone heard them in English?

IRAN --- extra broadcasts for Ramadan are not included

LAOS --- MW only 567; so 6130 is off for good??

TANZANIA --- 11735 is not irregular but has not been heard
for months, unlike 6015 which might be irregular

USA --- AWR - why are there only 3 transmissions listed,
Bulgarian and Italian?

USA --- WEWN typo 9835 instead of correct 9385

USA --- WRNO at 0200-0500; when on isn`t it at 01-04
during DST?

USA -- WORLD OF RADIO --- some strange entries there:
0030 Tue & Sun on WRMI 7730 --- news to me; System D
skeds show other programming

Omits our best broadcast across the continent: Sat 0130 on 5850

Sun 0830 on 5950 --- I don`t think so; other programs scheduled

Mon 2100-2130 on 7290-Sofia! Correct time is 1800-1830, and
site is in dispute, or Romania?

Tue 2130-2200 on 7780?? 21-22 is the hour with NO frequencies
on System D; one of three imaginary WOR broadcasts.

Latest addition to be confirmed is not included: Sun 0300 on 5800

Why don`t they refer to my website which I try to keep as
uptodate and accurate as possible?

http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html

CLAND: Shiokaze/Sea Breeze, out of date. There is no ``summer
schedule``. It changes every month.

CLAND: Voice of Tibet on only two frequencies? See Ivo`s
detailed schedules. Complete entry says:

Quite possible that you had a TP this morning. I heard the Australian maritime
weather BC on 2201 kHz at 1042 UTC this morning (about 25 minutes before our
local SR), here in Maryland. It's unusual to hear them on such a low freq.,

Regarding your report on the JBA on 6134.819 which you assume is Radio Santa
Cruz, Bolivia, I have found lately that Radio Aparedica, Brazil, is sometimes
on 6135.12 and sometimes on 6134.83. Santa Cruz, when it's on, is on 6134.88.
On 11/19, I had a very good signal on 6134.83 from 0200, which was clearly in
Portuguese. I went to Radio Aparecida's website and listened in; it was the
same programming that I was hearing on 6134.83, except 15 seconds behind.

``[WOR] Albania - Radio Tirana Live Stream --- Gday Glenn and all on

directly from their website, today approx 0915 UT with local pop
music, different to the current fare we’d be getting via WRMI (which
is the collection of Albanian folk music, followed by the Albanian
national anthem Hymni I Flamurit “song of the flag”).

Without my computer open, I can’t source the exact IP address for the
stream at present but I will get it to everyone ASAP.

I have always suspected that WRMI get their daily recordings of RT
from radio360.eu and have been assuming (without researching further)
that the German third-party podcasts have the timer set and either
haven’t changed it yet or they’re receiving the same stuff day after

1600-1630 UT was 18.00-18.30 CEST, so they recorded the English
program during summer. Now during winter, they should have shifted
their recording time to 1700-1730 UT which is 18.00-18.30 CET, but
they forgot to do so.

By the way: It's the same Albanian folk music every day, as it
represents the last 30 of an old 90 minute program in Albanian
language which is not updated any more. Only the foreign language
programs on this stream are updated daily, from Monday to Saturday.

The reason for not updating the Albanian language program is simple:
There is a new 24-hour channel for the Albanian diaspora named "Radio

I have forwarded this info to Jeff White and at his suggestion also to

can get this straightened out.

UT Friday November 22 I am checking again: 9395, WRMI at 0146 is JBA

schedule. By 0228, 9395 has recovered to S9! rockmusic, on Oldies

hours after their local SR, so probably no surprise.

At 0400, there are definitely two signals on 6015. The background signal had
the drums of Radio Tanzania Zanzibar, followed by it time pips and a female
anncr. With fading, sometimes RTZ is on top. I assume the foreground sig is
Radio Tamazuj. We'll see what's left of RTZ at 0430.

2019-10-18 Thread Arthur Delibert
Recently Zacharias Liangas posted here about a new kind of interference, with
noise spikes evenly spaced up and down the band. There has recently been a
discussion on the Topband amateur radio reflector about precisely this type of
interference emanating from certain new heating units and what to do about it
(assuming you can find the source!). See below for more information.

[HCDX] DXing on the beach with a short vertical

2019-07-21 Thread Arthur Delibert
Spent some time this afternoon on the ocean beach at Chappaquiddick Island,
Massachusetts, with an XHDATA D-808 portable rcvr and a 15-foot vertical wire.

I was amazed to hear Shannon Volmet on 5505 kHz USB at 2028 UTC, almost 4 hours
before local sunset.

Also VMW, Wiluna, Western Australia, on 6230 kHz USB at 2102, more than 3 hours
before my local sunset.

Also decent sigs from Voice of Vietnam, 9730 kHz shortly before their s/off at
2157, and CNR2, China on 9820 kHz at 2200. I’ve had trouble hearing both of
those lately from either home (SAL12 antenna) or the house here on Martha’s
Vineyard (pennant antenna).

The website “Short-wave.info” lists 7240 and 7450 as “Lhasa” and the others as

[HCDX] PBS Xizang?

2019-07-20 Thread Arthur Delibert
I haven’t heard the Tibetan service of PBS Xizang for about 10 days on any of
the usual frequencies — 4905, 4920, 6025, 6130, or 7385 — not even a het. Are
they off the air? Does anyone know why?

Thanks.

Re: [HCDX] Glenn Hauser logs July 5-6-7, 2019

2019-07-07 Thread Arthur Delibert
Glenn --

11780 is on now (2108). I can also hear weak hets on 9630.43, just above 9818
(too weak to measure more precisely) and 11815.03. I'm wondering if some of
the others are off, or only running barefoot, because with the lack of
sunspots, they can't reach the audience in Brazil on shortwave.

** BRAZIL. 9630, 9664, 9725, 9818, 11815, 11856, July 7 at 0147-0148,
notable by their absence, not even JBA carriers from the mostly
off-frequency ZYs. Nor 11780 which I assume is off now, tho regularly
active earlier. The others seem to be disappearing from the ether one
by one. Or: curtailed skeds, and/or péssima propagação, as Carlos
Gonçalves, Portugal has reported all these except 9725 and 11856 in
late June at other dayparts; plus also 9515, 9550 and 11895 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6000, July 7 at 0132, RHC is suptorted S9+20/30, JBM, but I
can recognize it`s Arnie ending his other show `Breakthru`. Only //
6165, at 0135 is S9+25/35 and undermodulated but sufficient by
comparison now in jazz show. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 4765, July 7 at 0156, still no signal from R. Progreso. If
anyone ever hear it again, be sure to report; nominal sked was
0030-0400 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** IRAN. 7260, July 7 at 0140 tune-in to music on AM, then a bit of
dead air and off, so I wonder if it`s an ham screwing around; until I
uplook 7260 in EiBi to find Iran in Spanish to Caribbean listed during
this hour. Lawless nation: ¿what are they doing broadcasting inside
the 40m hamband into our Hemisphere?

11660, July 7 at 0149 tune-in, convenient ID immediately in Spanish
for VRII, poor-fair S4-S7. This one from Sirjan to Central America
scheduled 2350-0250 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also
UNID 6151.5-USB

** KUWAIT. 17549.97, July 6 at 2225, R. Kuwait, JBA in Arabic, and
again by this hour both the Strongest Signal On Band, and Only Signal
On Band; knocked off-frequency just to make it more interesting,
taking over that task from RHC which now is right on 15370 and 7380
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6875-USB, UT Sun July 7 at 0137, dense rock music at
S9, no pauses or announcements past 0200. Many reports here
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,55749.0.html
starting at 0033, and no ID until 0202 as Mix Radio International; if
only I had stayed with it 2 minutes longer --- but I`m already late
for `Weekend Radio` on WCLV. HFU guys report it still going at 0240.
First pirate I`ve heard in quite some time except for YHWH (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** TURKEY. 11980, July 6 at 0529, VOT is S9+10/S8, so despite my
previous comment, would be enough to enjoy some music, except it`s all
Turkish talk now, and somewhat muffled (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1989 monitoring: confirmed UT Saturday July 6
at 0130 on WRMI 7780, fair but not enough vs high local noise level.
Also reported by Mark Coady, Ontario: ``7780 USA WRMI at 0144 with
Glenn Hauser's “World of Radio” - Fair July 6``

Ivo Ivanov, Bulgaria, reports: ``GERMANY, Reception of World of Radio
via HLR on 6190 CUSB, July 6

https://swldxbulgaria.blogspot.com/2019/07/reception-of-world-of-radio-via-hlr-on_6.html
0631-0700 6190 GOH 001 kW / 230 deg CeEu English Sat, weak
signal``

I try not to be awake before 1200 UT, but Mark Coady, Ontario reports:
``9955 USA WRMI at 1155 with Glenn Hauser's “World of Radio” - Fair to
Good July 6``

NOT confirmed Sat July 6 at 1430 on HLR 9485-USB; no signal at all via
UTwente SDR, just huge splash from 9490 Romania. As usual.

Confirmed Sat July 6 at 2109 the 2100 on WRMI 9955, fair-good.

Also confirmed UT Sun July 7 at 0130 on WRMI 5850, S9+40/50, yet can
still hear some nearby lightning crashes from SE Kansas if not West
Texas. Fill music overlaps my introduxion, and even more of it
overlaps my outroduxion just before 0159.

Could several DXers in Europe get bearings on the “mystery Egyptian music
station”? I would live to know if it’s coming from Egypt or somewhere else.

2019-04-21 Thread Arthur Delibert
On the air now (2353+). First something classical, then ID by a man in
English, and then soft jazz. Fair to good signal. Directional antenna
suggests ENE from Washington DC area. (Art Delibert, N. Bethesda, MD 4/21/19)

S4-S6 dead carrier 4990 here 0229-0240+. Something must have changed as had
been a struggle to get any trace of it. Hope they will resume modulating. 73,

Audio stream is back, and I heard
a clear ID for "Radio Apintie" by male DJ on 4990
 kHz at 0149 hours.

 Good idea. Thanks.
Yes, the signal on 4990 matches the webstream from R.
Apintie, except that the webstream is considerably
delayed. So it's definitely Apintie. (At the moment
-- 0139 hours -- they seem to have lost the audio feed to
the SW transmitter again! Carrier remains on the air.)

 Station noted from 23:15 on
4990 kHz with M and F anncrs in what could be Dutch. Fair
signal. On the SAL-12 antenna, best signal is to the SE,
which would be consistent with Suriname. (Delibert,

Beibu Bay Radio is putting in a good signal into central Maryland this evening.

[HCDX] Angola, 4949.74 kHz

2018-12-27 Thread Arthur Delibert
At 0200, Radio Nacional Angola is making a better showing on 4949.74 than it

[HCDX] Radio Logos 4810 kHz

2018-12-27 Thread Arthur Delibert
PERU, Radio Logos, 4810 kHz, heard with a good signal from 1053 tune-in to 1104
tune-out. At first, a long talk (sermon?) by a man, joined by a woman at the
end. At 1058, Peruvian song with flute music. ID at 1103, then back to music.
Good signal level, but the USB was covered by the usual enormous ute, and the
LSB suffered from CODAR and periodic lightning crashes. Radio Tarma on 4774.91
was also good at the same time. Both stations seem to have been right on the
SR line at the time. Re-check at 1135 found Logos to be only a het. (Art

[HCDX] Interesting Propagation

2018-11-16 Thread Arthur Delibert
When I left the dials last night, the radio was tuned to 5505 kHz and the
antenna was directed to the northeast. I was surprised at about 1025 UTC this
morning to turn it on and hear Shannon VOLMET with a very good, very readable
signal, about 2-1/2 hours after their local sunrise.

I've tended to ignore announcements from European pirates and special event
stations about upcoming broadcasts at that hour, because I figured I'd never
hear them in North America. But now I think it would be well worth checking
for those stations, especially when the magnetic field is quiet and the solar
wind speed is relatively low.

[HCDX] Loggings November 4

2018-11-04 Thread Arthur Delibert
China – 4905 and 4920 kHz – PBS Xizang with poor signal, 22:10 – 22:20. Music
and talk by woman. Parallel to 6130 kHz.

5050 kHz – Beibu Bay Radio heard at 2247. Very poor signal, but their
distinctive xylophone IS was audible.

Liberia – 6049.98 kHz – ELWA presumed to be the one here from 20:42 tune-in to
22:03 tune-out, with Christian sermons in African-accented English and gospel
music. Initially poor, but grew to good by the end. There were announcements
just past the top of each hour, but if there were IDs in there, I didn’t pick
them out. (My ears aren’t what they used to be.)

I am hearing a het on about 3375.07 kHz this morning from 0915 tune-in. (Hard

Switching the antenna directions indicates it’s strongest from the south,
consistent with Radio Municipal. It wasn’t there two days ago. (Art Delibert,

[HCDX] What happened to Radio 4KZ today?

2018-10-19 Thread Arthur Delibert
I was listening to the bit of audio I could hear from 4KZ this morning (U.S.

aback to record the exact time, but it was about 1151 UTC.

A check of Solomon Islands BC on 5020 kHz showed that their signal remained
very good.

So what happened at 4KZ? Hope everyone and everything is ok.

[HCDX] Radio 4KZ, 5055 kHz

2018-09-29 Thread Arthur Delibert
Australia – Radio 4KZ, 5055 kHz – presumed to be the one here from 1112 fade-in
to 1145 fade-out. Poor signal, deep in the noise. Could hear pop vocals, then
a male anncr at 1127, and back to pop vocals. I wasn’t able to discern any
actual words, or even be sure of the language. Hoping for better tomorrow!

[HCDX] WWV: Are they testing us?

2018-09-22 Thread Arthur Delibert
WWV has been broadcasting an outdated propagation report for several days,
giving the solar flux as of September 18 and K Index as of 1200 on September
19. THIS MAY BE A TEST TO SEE IF ANYONE IS LISTENING, and if not, they’ll shut
it down.

We’ve had similar tests from other SW services prior to shutting down – for
example, Radio Australia a couple years ago went off the air briefly, allegedly
for xmtr maintenance; the response from listeners wasn’t strong enough, and
they used that as evidence to shut down permanently.

The NIST website gives an email address of:
nist.ra...@boulder.nist.gov Does anyone
have other addresses for them?

Re: [HCDX] Voice of Vietnam 9730 & 7280

2018-08-04 Thread Arthur Delibert
Actually, I was marveling at their precision, as each new segment started
within about one second of the appointed time. Not quite so good as China on
9820 – it signs off at 1100 each day. Of the usual 5+1 time beeps from China,
I hear the 5, but then the xmtr is gone before the +1.

VOV's programs are all about 27 1/2 minutes long and many times.. the frequency
will roll on for an hour or two with different languages.. on the WHR
Transmitter that does english spanish english spanish at utc on 7315,
theres a bit of dead air at the end of the show, WHR fills with some PSA's then
the next program starts... but don't expect a VOV program to go smoothly, it
almost never does. I like them, but there's almost always some technical
glitch. One time an english slot was german for the first 5 minutes, another
time there were constant audio drop outs

R. Transmundial, 11734.96 kHz. This station doesn’t often propagate well to
this area, but hearing it from 1655 at best-ever level here. Male anncr in
Portuguese, occasional musical flourishes, many mentions of “Transmundial,”
including ID at TOH. Fair to good levels, great modulation, near 100%
readable. Not hearing Zanzibar here at all at the moment. (Art Delibert,

I’ll change this to a definite logging. Heard an ID today for “Radio Sakha” by
male anncr a few seconds after the 1100 time beeps. Signal is better today
than it was on Sunday. This station seems to make an appearance whenever there
are national elections in Russia. Perhaps the politicos want the ethnic groups
in the Far East to feel as though they’re getting good services? (Art

2017-12-25 Thread Arthur Delibert
Radio Nacional, Brasil, 11780.008 kHz, seems to be working on the transmitter.
Good signal here in Maryland around 2030, but it periodically drops off the air
for a few seconds, as if someone is making adjustments. No sign of the FM-y
blob that Glenn Hauser was reporting. Shortly before 1800, R. Nacional was
heard with a good carrier but very low modulation. (Art Delibert, North

[HCDX] 5010 kHz -- A new pirate?

2017-11-24 Thread Arthur Delibert
At 1959 tune-in, hearing rock music on 5010 kHz. No ID at top of the hour.
This is AM, double-sideband. Signal sometimes climbs to S3 on my east-facing
pennant; drops way down when I switch to the north-facing pennant. So probably
not local; but at this hour, on this frequency, I think it has to be
groundwave, not skywave.

[HCDX] Beibu Bay Radio, 9820 kHz?

2017-10-28 Thread Arthur Delibert
There are two stations audible on 9820 from 2258 tune-in. One is obviously
CNR, with the usual format. The other is playing pop music before the TOH, but
after TOH it seems to have a language that’s not Chinese. (Beibu Bay is listed
as being in English, Thai and Khmer at this hour.) Now (2308), they’re back to
pop music. Too much of a jumble to sort out. The only other station listed
here at this hour is the Brazilian, but they’re down on 9819.11.

[HCDX] Radio Aparecida, 5035 kHz

2017-10-22 Thread Arthur Delibert
Brazil, R. Aparecida, 5035 kHz, 2240 - 2302 I’ve been hearing a het here
in the evenings for several weeks. This is the first time I’ve gotten any
usable audio. Pop vocals and male and female announcers, some IDs, lots of
mentions of Sao Paulo. At TOH, time beeps were a minute late. Parallel to
9630 and 11855. Fair signal initially, eventually fading to poor; good
modulation, lots of splatter from Cuba on 5040. (Art Delibert, Maryland,

Re: [HCDX] Glenn Hauser logs October 21-22, 2017

2017-10-22 Thread Arthur Delibert
Thanks. I’ve been wondering why I couldn’t hear Indonesia’s usual het on
9525.94. This evening, 9525 was dominated by the CRI Russian service, which
put a very nice signal into my area, near Washington, DC. (300 kw beamed
pretty much right at us.) CRI went off at 2057, and I was able to detect a
weak het on 9524.94, which went off at 2102. I assume this was RRI.

Re: [HCDX] [badx] Troubleshooting a crackling noise on my HF/SWradio(s)

2017-10-16 Thread Arthur Delibert
Sorry – I should have read your original post before responding. Does the
noise return when you start using the Wellbrook again? Noise from a faulty
powerline component often appears when the weather gets very dry and disappears
when it rains. So you should do more than one test of putting the Wellbrook in
and taking it out again.

You might get a sense of where it’s coming from by using the loop to try to
null it out, but that can be hard with powerline noise, because the lines
themselves can carry it for a long way. Sometimes a vhf am radio (like one
that covers the air traffic control frequencies around 120 MHz) with a
directional antenna can be used to locate the source. If you can find it, ask
the local power company to fix it.
