Re: [Internetradio] SiriusXM Streaming
I grabbed an LG 34C about a year ago from Walmart that is / was a "Straight Talk Wireless" CDMA phone for $30 new. Runs Android KitKat. I didn't activate it as a smartphone; I just us it as an Internet radio / mp3 device. Doesn't have much of a speaker but I primarily use it with headphones. It has decent battery life; it also has Bluetooth but I have never tried it. Streaming audio doesn't put much demand on a smartphone, so just about any would do. Something that can take a microSD card at least gives you more storage space, in case you want to dump audio books on the device. I checked Straight Talk Wireless for Dubuque and that same phone still goes for $30 on the website; you actually might get it cheaper at the Walmart website. As for tablets, again I don't think it matters a lot, particularly if you're going to keep it plugged in all the time. I know some of the $50 tablets out there only have a four-hour battery life. And like John says, the "old-fashioned radio" experience is best, but unfortunately just isn't very practical if one is looking at options today... Kevin - Both Pure and Sangean had purpose built wifi clock radios on the market until recently, but I see both are listed as discontinued after checking today. Inasmuch as all wifi radios appear to have clocks and alarm and sleep features anyway, any one of them could be a bedside unit provided they’re priced and perform in the way you prefer. Don’t get me wrong, Rob. I still “prefer” the “old-fashioned” radio-type experience, but practicality and reality hitting you square in the face eventually suggests and then dictates a different approach. :) Just to square the circle, a Pure support rep did respond to me and informed that they still do support Sirius/XM. In addition, she informed me that the Sirius/XM web site lists the Evoke F4 as a compatible device. > On Oct 1, 2015, at 11:03 AM, Rob de Santos wrote: > > Makes sense. --- Begin Message --- This thread reminds me of one on this forum about three years ago regarding appropriate el-cheapo smartphones that one doesn't use as a phone, but instead as an WiFi internet radio appliance. Would one still go this route (and if so, which "phones" are the better choices now) or look to the now el-cheapo 7-inch Android tablets (some of which can be gotten for a low as $50 for off-brand Asian imports)? In general I believe the Android or iOS device with TuneIn (or equivalent apps) is probably the way to go instead of an actual internet radio device. I have an 8-inch Lenovo WiFi-only Android tablet that I bought a year ago for use on weekends as I travel to where my wife lives and works three hours away. This tablet, or even the 7-inch size, seems too big for a something I might want to have on my bedside table as an always-plugged-in, internet-enabled replacement for a clock radio. I am otherwise not a smart phone user (still prefer a flip phone), so wondering what route others would recommend these days. Makes sense. A cheap tablet and a speaker are easily integrated with other systems. Re: [Internetradio] SiriusXM Streaming
Hi Rob - I’m not sure I would purchase a Pure internet radio or any other internet radio today. I’d be tempted to purchase a good portable bluetooth speaker and link it to my iPhone. And Pure has some well rated ones with its Jongo series. I’m also concerned that the product information for the Pure Evoke F4 with Bluetooth that I have no longer seems to mention access to Sirius/XM, although that feature still works on my unit as I write this. I’ve written Pure Support for an explanation and will share their response when I receive it. Pure Support is very responsive, usually within 24-48 hours. Having said all that, I have two Pure radios that I like very much. The original Pure Evoke (which is still available at a steep discount) I have now resides permanently in our condo in Florida. I’ve had it for four or five years and it still works well and sounds good for a radio its size. The only proviso with that one is that the changes made at the BBC make Listen Again inoperable on it due to firmware incompatibility. Most BBC programs are also available as podcasts, so that is not a “fatal” issue. The Evoke F4 lives in our home in New York. Its audio seems a little more powerful with additional bass response over the original Evoke. The Bluetooth feature is added in a rather clunky way via a small USB plug-in at the back of the set, but it works. Both radios are made portable through use of a charge-pak (different ones for each model) that provide about 8-10 hours of wireless listening when fully charged. The chargepaks are optional accessories that run about $50. Worth it, in my opinion. As with other internet radios, for full feature usability one needs to register the unit(s) on the pureconnect web site. This works pretty much the same way similar sites work with their proprietary radios. It is regularly updated and, as I said, the Pure support staff is very responsive. Adding stations that aren’t yet in Pure’s database is very easily accomplished. I’ve done it many times. An alternative that works well also is the Pure Evoke One portable, which is smaller than the Evoke and Evoke F4. We raffled one off at Winterfest a couple of years ago. It has fewer features (no bluetooth) but does have a headphone jack to which a larger speaker could be connected if the audio from the unit is deemed not to be pleasing enough. At least this time around, they are doing a public test and easing into it rather than just setting a cutoff date and leaving users to fend for themselves. No question this is the future of streaming but there is little reason to abandon half of your listeners as they have in the past. Hopefully this time they give users and vendors time to adjust. Re: [Internetradio] SiriusXM Streaming
The mechanism now being used by SiriusXM has not been openly published. Presumably they have documented it only for those with suitable contract/NDA in place. The LMS in the sky that is MySqueezeNetwork would be the place to implement it since having it in local LMS would expose the mechanisms for others to copy. Since Logitech is not updating MySqueeze then this results in breakage. Maybe someone will work out the new protocol or have an alternate intermediate service that get make the stream available but until then it is dead for Squeezeboxes. Re: [Internetradio] SiriusXM Streaming
No technical information about the changes was provided by SiriusXM in the email to customers. Now, when I try to access any channel via the Squeezebox a continuous loop plays indicating that that "If you're hearing this message then you have a device that will need an upgrade..." It encourages the listener to switch to a current technology platform. On Wed, 2015-09-30 at 06:23 -0400, Rob de Santos wrote: > Thanks for this post, Dan. Re: [Internetradio] SiriusXM Streaming
I would add tablets to that mix, Rob...the same operating systems run both devices, so the technologists get extra bang for their investment. Plus they get to send us ads and other collateral material if they control the apps we use. I wonder what's unique about TuneIn's business model (if anything) that enables them to navigate this process more deftly? Are they paying content providers for the privilege of linking to their streams? Did Reciva do this as well? But as you say, the legacy standalone devices that Kim Elliott mused about 15-odd years ago have generally become digital detritus... Thanks for this post, Dan. Did they say what the change to the protocol was/is? More and more, all that matters is mobile devices. The older standalone devices are increasingly litter on the digital highway. Sad reality. -- -Rob de Santos -Original Message- From: Internetradio [mailto:internetradio-boun...@hard-core-dx.com] On Behalf Of Daniel L. Srebnick Sent: Tuesday, September 29, 2015 1:15 PM To: Internetradio@hard-core-dx.com Subject: [Internetradio] SiriusXM Streaming Since I first owned a Logitech Squeezebox, I've enjoyed the ability to use the Sirius app to stream the satellite radio service. In fact, many more program channels are available online than via satellite. A number of weeks back, I received an email from Sirius advising that they will be making some changes in their streaming protocol and that I should contact my device manufacturer to make sure that I would have continued service. I opened a ticket with Logitech support. At first I was advise that their developers were looking into the issue. This week, I received a response that they would not be supporting the protocol change. So, if you're interested in streaming SiriusXM on your internet radio device, don't buy a Logitech device. I don't yet know what the story will be on my Grace Reciva based devices.
