[lace] Tatting left handed
I teach Tatting every month in a craft store on Main Street where I live. I am left hand but I tat right handed and I teach right handed even to my students that are left handed like me. I tell them that the fine motor moments are actually done with the left hand. I just intact taught a left handed person this past Saturday. She got it pretty easily too. Sent from Yahoo! [lace] tatting with the 'wrong hand'
Hi, all, I'm left-handed and when I decided to learn how to tat years ago it never occurred to me to learn other than left-handed. Several years later I decided that was a mistake - it was too much trouble converting charts from RH to LH - so I re-taught myself right-handed. Although both ways were initially awkward, I persevered and now find tatting right-handed comes naturally. And it wasn't just that, but I get way fewer knots and tangles tatting RH. For some reason as it seems the threads lie more smoothly RH. One thing that worked for me was to start with thick threads. It made it so much easier to see what I was doing and make sure I flipped the stitches correctly. When you are learning a new skill the hand you use is not really relevant since it is still a muscle memory excercise. Re: [lace] Thread advice please
Thank you folks, Having sent the email, got one reply back suggesting I might put more threads in. I did put an extra one in on the outside edge but not the inside which would have benefitted from an extra one as well I do feel that the whole thing will be too spidery thin for the best look. I started to think what other thread might work and got Brendas book out. I hadn't really got an idea of what thread would fit the bill, but took a sensible look through and actually did look at the 27, 28 wpc threads realising I do have a couple of threads which fit the bill. So thank you, as ever for the help and I am really rather pleased with myself for thinking that through and coming up with the same sort of numbers. What a long way I have come with Brenda's book and with lace via Arachne. Sue T Dorset UK Hello Sue and everyone You've enlarged the pattern 119% so I'm thinking the thread size should be increased by that. Brok 36/2 and E.C. 36/2 are 32 and 31 wraps respectively. Doing the arithmetic, dividing the 32 by 1.19 I get 27-28 wraps for the slightly thicker thread. Now to find an accessible thread. Madeira Cotona 30 is 29 wraps in Brenda's T4Lace, could do quite well. If you have that book, check out the 27- and 28-wrap columns. My go-to would be the Sulky 30 wt. in the 27 wraps section. Hi Sue I'm away from home (in wet and windy Dorset!) so can't look anything up properly, but I'd suggest trying a 30/2 cotton to start with. If you don't get a satisfactory answer in the meantime I will have a proper think about this next week. [lace] Tatting update
Hi Daphne and everyone I thought you might like to know how I got on at the tatting workshop I went to on Saturday. I enjoyed it very much and seem to have got on quite well, better than the people sitting around me. I got on to doing a proper simple pattern, just a bookmark with rings and chains (and different from the one in Janette Baker's book which I did a week or so ago). Some ladies didn't even achieve that, the poor lady sitting next to me was left handed and didn't get beyond doing a chain, but she definitely wants to keep going. I brought my bookmark with me to work today to have a go, but it's too cold for my fingers. [lace] Thread advice please
I am working one of Christine springetts circular pieces in a bangle and carried on using the 36/2 she mentioned only using egyptian cotton which I like. But, to get it to sit in my bangle I increased the size of the pattern to 119% and carried on with it anyway. Of course now I can see that while some can be increased without too much of a problem this was not the best choice on this occasion. I did mull over the threads I had but didnât know how best to decide how far to change it and what would have worked better. This was sort of a trial piece so need to know what to use for the actuals please if anyone can advice me. Have been very stressed lately (due to life), but found sitting with my lace pillow yesterday evening quite calmingI do need to make some more but want them to be right and look lovely so all advice would be very welcome. Sounds like it will be a great day. Sorry I won't be able to make it, but if I am ever in your neck of the woods (quite likely since DH and I both love that part of the country), I'll try to time a visit to coincide with one of your regular meetings. [lace] Wolds Lace Day 28 Sept 2013
Hello All Wolds Lacemakers are due to hold their lace day on the 28th September 2013 at Cottingham Road Baptist Church Chanterlands Avenue Hull UK HU5 4AY from 10m to 4pm. The tickets are £3.50 each and this includes a door prize, so anyone attending should keep their entrance ticket. The Speaker, who will speak in the afternoon, is Jacque Tinche on Hinojosa Lace (a Spanish lace) and there will be suppliers in attendance. There is on street parking nearby and there are facilities for the disabled. This is a traditional lace day so anyone attending can bring a lace pillow so that they can work on their lace. It is also nice to see what other lacemakers are working on. Everyone is advised to bring a packed lunch as the sandwich shops are a 15 minutes or so walking distance away. Tea and coffee will be available at the hall. And cakes will be available with the afternoon tea. For anyone who has never tried bobbin lacemaking, there will be a practice pillow available in the morning so they can have a go if they want. Wolds Lacemakers have a website for anyone wanting any further information about the Society, www.woldslacemakers.co.uk, or contact me and I will be happy to give any further information. Please do come along and see us if you can.
