Is that how Xcode installed them, or did you symlink them yourself?

The hardcoded default compiler in MacPorts, which varies by Xcode

version of Xcode, but in the case of Leopard there seems to have
been some discrepancy. Perhaps Leopard's Xcode used to default to
gcc 4.0 and then changed to 4.2 later and we didn't notice. I
thought it was that gcc on the command line was gcc-4.0 while in
Xcode projects gcc-4.2 was used by default, but I could be mistaken.

I will let you know if this works.

The texlive ports include a hook that updates TeX's database of
installed files and various other runtime optimizations. It sounds
like

this is failing for you because some of the texlive binaries have
broken linking.

It sounds like you're trying to deactivate these ports to get things
working again. In that case, it doesn't really matter that the

The necessary databases and formats will be rebuilt if you reinstall

Thanks. The config.log unfortunately doesn't shed any light on why
this check failed; it merely reiterates that it failed.

I see you're on a G4 with Leopard. In case this was something
PowerPC- or Leopard-specific I tried on my G4 with Leopard, but it
built this version of gdk-pixbuf2 just fine.

Do you perhaps have an older copy of glib2 (version 2.28.8)
installed somewhere else, such as in /usr/local? If so, move /usr/
local out of the way, clean the port and try again.

Yes, that's the rev-upgrade feature. What ports are broken? You
should fix all these errors by rebuilding all the affected ports.
rev-upgrade should have done so for you automatically, unless you
interrupted it by pressing ^C or asked it not to by editing the

Re: gcc42 build error.

2012-09-17 Thread Frank J. R. Hanstick

Hello,
I am not sure what it is needed for these days, It was originally
installed to build ports requiring a more upgraded version of gcc 4.2
than that supported by Apple (that was a long time ago) and it has
been maintained since? If only the development gcc 4.2.1 is used by
MacPorts, I could probably get rid of it since I do not do much
outside of MacPorts these days. Since I have a PowerPC G4, I do still
need a gcc that builds to the PowerPC following Apple guidelines (some
of which need to be changed; but, I do not know enough about gcc to
make the changes and I would have to recompile the entire system if I
did).
There is already a ticket, I do not need to file a new one and can
you post the number so that I can add myself to the notification
should someone someday decide to fix (which includes gcc42 no longer

You didn't mention your OS version and architecture, but in the past

upgrade to the latest gcc43 on my Power Mac G4 running Leopard,

interesting list of versions appeared, namely:

--- qemu @0.10.6_0

--- qemu @0.12.5_0
--- qemu @0.14.1_0+target_i386

The +target_* variants specify which architectures can be emulated
with qemu.
The current default variants are +target_i386 +target_x86_64
regardless of the

host architecture as these are used the most.

See 'port variants qemu' for the full list of available architectures.

Re: /usr/local question

2012-04-04 Thread Frank J. R. Hanstick

Hello,
There is a problem with having many locations for third party
installed software and that is dependencies during build and paths to
those dependencies. Sometimes the problem also crops up when
applications are opened depending on how the library links are sought
(this is very very rare; but, does occur). If the build path is hard
specified for dependencies, then, there is no problem because the
dependency search will find or not find the dependency at the proper
location; otherwise, PATH is used and the order of search of PATH will
determine in which location a particular dependency is found to be
used, a problem if there is more than one version of a dependency
active at a time for the different installed port. I have actually had
this happen a couple of times when trying to install non-MacPorts
third party software into usr/local and having the dependency found in
opt/local.

Any other place on the hard drive that doesn't already have a
defined meaning. So any prefix other than /, /usr, /usr/local,
/opt/local or /sw should be fine.

Thanks!

In addition, I agree with Jan Stary that it would be nice to
amend the #defaultprefix: section in the FAQ. If possible, it
would also be nice to also add this to the A port fails to
build. What should I do? section in the FAQ, as the section
title of #defaultprefix is Why is /opt/local the default install
location for MacPorts? and if a port fails to build for me, I
probably wouldn't realize that pertinent information is in that
section.

If you want to install in directories other than /usr/local to
avoid any conflicts with Mac Ports, you could use the other *nix
location $HOME/bin.

On most, if not all, Linux distros that PATH is already present in
~/.bashrc.

You'd probably have to create the directory in /Users/yourname as
well as add the above line to your bash_profile but I use $HOME/bin
a lot on OS X Linux. It also has the added advantage of not
having to use sudo when installing stuff.

the above (non-existent) line of course being:

`PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin`

netpbm fails to download using svn

2011-10-16 Thread Frank J. R. Hanstick

Hello,
In trying to upgrade via:

sudo port upgrade outdated

I encountered the following error:

--- Fetching netpbm
Error: Target org.macports.fetch returned: Subversion check out
failed
Log for netpbm is at: /opt/local/var/macports/logs/

.macports.org_release_ports_graphics_netpbm/netpbm/main.log

Error: Unable to upgrade port: 1
To report a bug, see
http://guide.macports.org/#project.tickets

When looking up the bug reports, I found a ticket issued against this
error designated as will not fix for the following reason:

Thank you for your report. However, I won't be making this
change.

I think that Subversion should not be used over HTTP at this time,
as there is no good way to assure that data has not been tampered
with. Portfiles that use HTTP to fetch regular tarfiles simply use a
checksum to verify the integrity of the downloaded file. This is not
an option when using Subversion. Transferring data over an encrypted
connection using HTTPS alleviates this problem somewhat, albeit not
completely fixing it (there might still have been an attack on the svn
server). Completely foregoing any security just as a workaround for
users whose network connection has isolated defects is not a good
idea, in my humble opinion.

How does this error get corrected if the maintainer is unwilling to
fix an obvious defect?

They always conflicted, but they were not always marked as being
conflicting, resulting in users experiencing errors when trying to
install both. I resolved that problem by marking the ports as
conflicting. You can only have one Qt port installed and active at a
time.

2010-01-06 Thread Frank J. R. Hanstick

Hello,
I had noticed the computing dependencies for at the beginning of an
install of upgrade when it first started appearing in 1.8.0. It made
sense which is why I thought it was a good idea and did not mention
it; but, I had not seen the second reference before 1.8.2 which is why
I asked. The reason for noticing is that I sometimes glance over to
the Terminal window to see what is being upgraded and to what version
from what version. It was also mentioned in an earlier posting that
when upgrading dependencies that a test be made to test for dependent
on which is different than dependent for and wondering if the
suggestion had been acted upon using the wrong wording. It is not a
problem, just an observation.

I take it this is from an upgrade rather than an install. The message

probably when the upgrade action was first added. Just an artefact of
how the upgrade procedure works.

the problem is trying to build to a PPC G4. I am going to take a
quick look at the source code (downloaded itk via CVS from the site)
after filing a bug report.

over 8 GB of disk space to build, after which it said it ran out of
resources (I think it said memory -- this machine has 4 GB RAM and
50GB free disk space). I simply re-ran the port install command and
it completed successfully; it takes 1.6GB of disk space after
installation.

If retrying (multiple times if necessary) does not lead to a
successful build for you, please file a ticket in the issue tracker,
as always, with as much debug output and other information about
your system as you can produce. Using build.jobs=1 will also help
reduce confusion and aide in reading the log.

Yes, it's certainly possible that the port doesn't work on PowerPC.
I haven't tested it. My 466-MHz Power Mac G4 would probably take a
week to finish the build so I'm not keen to try it...

ProjectCenter failed to launch.

2009-12-14 Thread Frank J. R. Hanstick

Hello,
I installed the projectcenter port and when I tried to launch it, got
a Library not loaded: ProjectCenter.framework/ProjectCenter error.
The framework is in /opt/local/GNUstep/System/Library/Frameworks. Was
this suppose to be taken care of during the installation?

I see this reported here (with no response):

http://lists.trolltech.com/pipermail/qt4-preview-feedback/2008-August/34.html

And here (response says the problem is caused by mysql's plugin.h
and suggests that the include can be removed from webkit somewhere
to fix it):

http://lists.trolltech.com/pipermail/qt-interest/2009-November/015969.html

Really, qt4-x11 is woefully out of date and should be updated. Not
sure if that will fix it but there's a ticket for the update request:

http://trac.macports.org/ticket/20986

It's still possible all the issues affecting qt4-mac right now will
also affect qt4-x11. See the issue tracker if you're interested.

According to etoile website, the etoile runtime is now officially

As you can see, the problem moved from gnustep-make to gnustep-base.
You may have to do through every gnustep module.
I appended the result to the ticket since the general thrust of the
ticket is installing gnustep. I found ticket 22751 which may mitigate
reopening #22729; but, I think #22729 was a more generic can't install
gnustep. I wonder if it would be worth while to go through all the
gnustep ports.

Re: Why doesn't macports install prebuild packages?

2009-11-26 Thread Frank J. R. Hanstick

Hello,
One reason I chose MacPorts over Fink was that there were more ports
available. That may or may not be true now because I have not used
Fink in a while. Unless Fink had changed, there were still a lot of
ports that came with assembly required. Not all ports came as
packages. I am not familiar with how many different cpu's Linux is
built for, so I cannot comment on that. My current platform is a dual
MPC-7448 (G4 model) which is still not a well supported cpu under
Linux. I will probably continue using a G4 system for a while because
I prefer the cpu (I do not need the extended precision of a G5).
I prefer MacPorts over doing it myself because someone greatly
appreciated ensured that all the dependencies were taken care of
beforehand. I spent many hours having to figure out what dependencies
were required for what ports and what version of a particular
dependency was required. MacPorts is a great time saver there.
A feature in Fink that I liked was the notification of what
dependencies were being loaded before hand which gave an indication of
how long the installation would be. I do not like the fact that
MacPorts does nothing to indicate that it is working an installation.
I would prefer to have little dots or the title of the current module
appear in the terminal window to alleviate the boredom and give a
notation of progress (I do not like the repeated compilation lines
from a non-MacPorts installation because it eats up my history space).

Nothing is ever perfect and each has good and bad features.

I think the problem is, that one would rather like installing and
uninstalling packages quickly than waiting while the computer needs
ages
to compile the stuff everytime itself, but knowing others don't have
to

care about three versions of a package.
I mean, why isn't that a problem with fink or debian or what else
dist?

Is it just a question of server recources?

I had no idea that was the case. Where can I read more about that?

I didn't want to just say Intel Mac, since MacPorts theoretically
runs on non-Macs as well, many of which will be x86-based and thus
should be able to use wine.

I'm sure I've installed gmp on Tiger PPC, so I suppose gmp must not
like the -arch flag that MacPorts 1.8.0 now adds. I can try to
reproduce the problem on my Tiger PPC Mac later today. You may

I'm also seeing this on tiger ppc and it has been reported on trac
against the older occurance of the same problem (#18755).

As the error logs show the problem is the lack of the compile flag
-force_cpusubtype_ALL.

I think you're right that the assertion of -arch is breaking the
trick
that was used previously to get this flag included. See comments
in the

port for what was done previously.

as suggested with the following result:

Please verify that the directory and portfile syntax are

The system is MacOS 10.4.11 on a PPC.

MacPorts is informing you that the variants it would select for
these ports today do not match the variants that were recorded in
the registry for the port at the time it was installed. You can
ignore the warnings, or forcibly rebuild each affected port if you
would like them to go away.

There are two reasons this situation might occur. One is that a
port may have had a variant added to it since you installed it, or
for some other reason a variant which should be automatically
selected was not in your previous install, but would be now. Taking
gcc43 for example, I'm not sure why you don't have the +powerpc
variant selected since it has been in the port since it was
created. Did you perhaps explicitly turn it off when you installed
it by using sudo port isntall gcc43 -powerpc? MacPorts 1.8.0 no
longer allows you to deselect platform variants so that situation
should hopefully no longer be possible.

The other reason is that the registry did not used to record the
variant +darwin for some reason. So any port that has a +darwin
variant will show this warning until you upgrade it. MacPorts 1.8.0
now records all variants including +darwin.

You need to type:

As is, you are telling port to upgrade the port nul for which you
got the currently scheduled error mesg.

wine / wine-devel / wine-crossover-games are intrinsically x86

only, as I see Solaris SPARC support, but if there's no bootstrap
binaries for PPC then it's unlikely to be supported by MacPorts

It looks to me like any JDK 1.6 will work for bootstrapping,

openjdk6_bootstrap contains only i386 binaries. So it cannot work

I would guess the bootstrap compiler would itself need to be

Comment:

OpenJDK doesn't support PPC system. If MacPorts supports
explicitly and
semantically listing supported/unsupported architectures I'd be
happy to

 add it.

Re: [MacPorts] #20662: openjdk6_bootstrap contains only i386 binaries

2009-08-13 Thread Frank J. R. Hanstick

Hello,
Are there instructions somewhere on how to do this?

wine / wine-devel / wine-crossover-games are intrinsically x86
only, for one obvious example. openjdk is not intrinsically x86-
only, as I see Solaris SPARC support, but if there's no bootstrap
binaries for PPC then it's unlikely to be supported by MacPorts
unless someone does the work to bootstrap it.

It looks to me like any JDK 1.6 will work for bootstrapping,
although I'd be surprised if the port made any attempt to support
anything other than a fixed bootstrap, so someone who cared could
build openjdk6 PPC binaries using Sun JDK 1.6 and package them up
as the PPC openjdk6_bootstrap.

Re: [MacPorts] #20662: openjdk6_bootstrap contains only i386 binaries

2009-08-13 Thread Frank J. R. Hanstick

Hello,
The next step is to get it from MacOS 10.5 to MacOS 10.4; but, I
imagine that would be easier than trying to generate a JDK from scratch.

Until then, maybe someone can tell Frank if the appropriate binary
plugs for PPC are available.

xulrunner-devel usage error

2009-07-06 Thread Frank J. R. Hanstick

Hello,
I successfully installed xulrunner-devel; but, when I tried to use
the installation, the jni.h reference in ./configure was:

checking jni.h usability... no
checking jni.h presence... no
checking for jni.h... no

I then looked into the configure.log file and found the following:

configure:19050: checking jni.h usability
configure:19067: gcc -c -g -O2 -I/usr/local/spidermonkey/include/ -I/
opt/local/include/xulrunner/stable/ -DXP_UNIX conftest.c 5

In file included from /opt/local/include/xulrunner/stable/jni.h:46,
 from conftest.c:56:
/opt/local/include/xulrunner/stable/jni_md.h:60:48: error: prtypes.h:
No such file or directory

	Searching through /opt/local/include/xulrunner/stable/ and /opt/
local/include/xulrunner/unstable/ resulted in not finding prtypes.h
in either. Is prtypes.h supposed to be installed or has the module
been replaced by another? Who's error is this?

Your code should probably check for nspr before xulrunner.

Additionally, xulrunner's pkg-config files probably should be
updated to

depend on nspr if they are not currently.

Shouldn't this be done by whom ever maintains xulrunner's port?

Re: Upgrade errors.

2009-05-31 Thread Frank J. R. Hanstick

Hello,
I have put on this posting forum everything that was rebuilt since
the last time the error appeared to indicate what worked and what has
not since there were many that have had one problem or another that
needed correcting. There have been so many that I do not know for
sure which one(s) it would have been. I only know that I reported
this some time back, took the steps to correct the problem and now
they are back. Is there a way to determine when ports were upgraded
last?

It seems that I did this once before to clear up these
problems, so why are they back? Some previous upgrade must have
reinstalled these items since the last clearing of the problem.

The ports no longer exist so they cannot have been reinstalled.

But possibly, back when they did exist, you installed a port
which depended on them, and that dependency is still noted in
your registry. You should identify which ports those are, and
forcibly rebuild them, to get them to record its dependencies
correctly. e.g.:

sudo port -nf upgrade whateverport

Except that once the ports were removed by the actions taken,
they only way they could have come back is if the earlier
installed ports were upgraded and reloaded them. It still does
not make any sense.

when or

why.

perl5.9 was renamed perl5.9-devel over a year ago [1], then deleted
about a
month after that [2] in favor of the release-status perl5.10.
Depending on
what you're doing with it, going with perl5.10 is probably the best
choice.

The render port was removed [3] in favor of xorg-renderproto after
being a
stub port for a while. Just force-uninstall render and you should
be fine
as it should have been only a build-time dependency and xorg-
renderproto

takes care of that now.

Unfortunately MacPorts doesn't have any sort of support for
renaming/deleting ports so this kind of issue occasionally surfaces.
