mac os server and remote desk top

2017-11-07 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi List,

I've got a mac mini running sierra server which I'm setting up for a number of
different things.

One of which is VPN which is done but still not yet working.

The other is Remote Desktop which I'd like to be able to do from my MBA

Now on the server I have the screen sharing, remote log in and remote
management all enabled and from within my network at home I can VNC on to the
server fine.

But as Voiceover is not available to me through the VNC connection if on a say
mac book to mac book
But Voiceover is meant to be available from Mac OS Server to the remote
connection,

Yet I can't figure how to get this working,
Is anyone able to advise on how voiceover can be setup to work through the
server to MBA remote connection.

Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, you know the one. You spend $100 on designer jeans and they seem to find
the exact same pair for $60. Their 4KTV is bigger, thinner, and smarter yet you
paid the same amount. And they remind you of this fact. All the time.
Well, perhaps it's because they're using apps that can save money while
shopping online or at retail. It's about time you got in the game. As we
approach Black Friday and Cyber Monday, here's a look at some recommended
deal-sniffing downloads for your iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. More:
Black Friday 2017: What to buy, what to skip More: The best Black Friday deals

More than 2,500 stores and marketplaces are supported. (Photo:
Ebates) The premise is simple: shop where you already like to shop, but get
cash back after your purchases, whether you opt to pay by check or a PayPal
deposit. Be aware the percentage varies depending on the online retailer or
marketplace, and there are more than 2,000 to choose from, including Amazon,
Walmart, Macy's, Target, eBay, Kohl's, Best Buy, American Eagle, Old Navy, and
Groupon, to name a few. The app will also notify you of sales and special
offers, and there are in-store coupons and promo codes, too. As added incentive
for signing up for a free Ebates account, you'll get a $10 bonus when you make
your first purchase, plus you'll earn $50 if you invite two friends to join.
Flipp: All of your circulars (flyers) and coupons in one place, along with a
smart shopping list, loyalty cards, rebate info, and more. (Photo: Flipp)
Another "must have" mobile companion, Flipp aggregates all your local circulars
(flyers) in one place now with more than 1,000 popular retailers whether you
want to browse through weekly ads or search for something specific by keyword.
When you land on a product you've had your eye on, Flipp looks to match the
deal with coupons, to save even more cash. Whether you're buying tech over
Black Friday or food to cook over the holidays, the app also features a
"discount slider," so you can select how much of a deal you want, such as only
showing you items discounted by 40% or greater. My favorite feature is a
"smart" shopping list, that automatically lists nearby retailers with the best
deals, based on what on your list.
Flipp also holds all your store loyalty cards in one place, so you can show the
app at checkout, plus there's support for rebates, too. Updated this week,
Shopkick rewards you with free gift cards for stores like Target, Walmart,
Amazon, Sephora, Starbucks, and more. To get going, open the Shopkick app while
you're at the mall, and you'll start to earn points
("kicks") for simply walking into select stores, scanning products (like a
retail scavenger hunt), and purchasing products (submit your receipt as proof).
You can also open the Shopkick app when you're lounging at home, as you can
receive kicks for virtually "visiting" a store or making an online purchase.
All the kicks you earn could be redeemed for gift cards or products (from about
20 to choose from), or you can donate your kicks to charity. Rather than
scouring the web for the best deals, DealNews has an "obsessive" team of deal
experts that looks for the best prices on the biggest brands, and then
publishes the 300 best deals and coupons (and in some cases, freebies) to the
DealNews app. And it's not just high-tech toys, like tablets and laptops, but
also apparel, home décor items, and more.
Along with letting you peruse the list of regularly updated deals, this free
app also offers alerts, so you're instantly notified when something you like
goes on sale. Other features include cloud syncing (so you can shop on your
phone or tablet but pay later when on your laptop), the ability to share deals
with family and friends (via email, instant messaging or social media), and
online and in-store coupons (divided by retailer). Whether you're looking to

2017-11-07 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi ET,

Got a crazy one for you.

Using my apple wifi keyboard with my mac mini server,

I get to a name that I can't tell the correct spelling of and need to check
character by character,

But with the keyboard I have no option to change the rota to those options.

I have no screen connected not that it would help me,
And I have no touch pad to make the changes in the rota that way.

How do I change the rota options with only my wifi keyboard?

Cheers for any assistance.

I like the logitech BT keyboard, make sure you get the 811 model, not the 810,
although it probably don’t matter if your just using IOS. This keyboard can be
paired to 3 devices, and works perfectly with any IOS device as well as the

Hi Donna,

This icleverr one is very popular if you have access to amazon.com.
http://amzn.to/2tcMzn8

It folds to a size just a little bigger than a passport, unfolds to a full
sized keyboard, comes with a cary case, and pairs to one ios, one android, and
one windows device all at once, allowing you to switch back and fourth.

ioS 11's autocorrection issue: How to fix A problem on iPhone?

2017-11-07 Thread M. Taylor
The iPhone has an autocorrect problem. Here's how to fix it Brett Molina ,
USA TODAY The new iPhone 8 Plus is displayed in the showroom after the new
product announcement at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, Calif. Some
iPhone users are reporting big drains on battery life with the new iOS 11
upgrade. (Photo: AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez,) Are you having a tough time
typing a lowercase "i" on the iPhone lately? It's not just you. Apple said
some users are having issues related to the autocorrect feature, where it
will automatically correct text if it's misspelled. For an unexplained
reason, in iOS 11, the mobile software update launched in September,
autocorrect replaces a lowercase "i" to an "A" with a question mark in a
box. It's appears widespread, judging from reactions on Twitter: does anyone
else phone auto correct the letter 'i' to A ? No autocorrect eye did not
mean I? pic.twitter.com/sG1iZXWdxK According to a support page on Apple's
website , the autocorrect issue will be fixed in a future software update.
However, there is a workaround to avoid this: 1. Go to your general settings
(tap the Settings app, then General). From there, pick Keyboard, then Text
Replacement. 2. Tap the "+" to add a new entry. 3. In the phrase portion,
type a capital "I. In the shortcut section, type a lowercase "i. Of course,
if the iPhone's autocorrect is still annoying, there are other ways to tame
it . Follow Brett Molina on Twitter: @brettmolina23 .

Row 1 Expanded

2017-11-07 Thread E.T.
In macOS Sierra, there exists an option to turn off the "row 1
added" announcement in Voiceover Utility. Its in macOS High Sierra too
but it does not affect the "row 1 expanded" that one hears in Disk
Utility and probably other areas. Has anyone found an option to turn
this off?

Re: Recommendation for a Bluetooth keyboard to pair with my iPhone

2017-11-07 Thread Erik Burggraaf
I have never seen a keyboard without the f marked, except for a few build
into old phones that came with thumb keyboards. If the markings are too
faint for you, you can always get some sticky dots and glue them on. That's
what I did for my Ericsson phone, which was the last handset I own that had
one of those built-in keyboards.

Inclusive Android has a few of these folding keyboards. They are all made
out of metal. Although they were reviewed for use with Android devices, all
of them work with iPhone as well. The iclever is a favorite of course,
because of its ability to connect multiple devices, but I don't think it's
currently available inside the US, and the other one works just as well.

I am a touch typist and when I started typing at school we were taught that
the F and J was marked which made it easier for VI people. I was taught
over 30 years ago so that shows you what age I might be! All though I am
not 60 so you can guess and come to your conclusions.

I at present use my small Focus 14 as a keyboard.

So if anyone knows of a good portible keyboard (not apple as it's too big)
a small one which has the F and J marked and is made of metal (none of
those cheap plastic ones thanks) I might be interested!

Thank you and please of course.

If I wanted a small portible keyboard I would want the F and J marked. I
stopped looking for keyboards long ago because I couldn't find a mark on the F
and J.

I am a touch typist and when I started typing at school we were taught that the
F and J was marked which made it easier for VI people. I was taught over 30
years ago so that shows you what age I might be! All though I am not 60 so you
can guess and come to your conclusions.

I at present use my small Focus 14 as a keyboard.

So if anyone knows of a good portible keyboard (not apple as it's too big) a
small one which has the F and J marked and is made of metal (none of those
cheap plastic ones thanks) I might be interested!

Thank you and please of course.

Kawal.

2017-11-07 Thread Erik Burggraaf

Hi Donna,

This icleverr one is very popular if you have access to amazon.com.
http://amzn.to/2tcMzn8

It folds to a size just a little bigger than a passport, unfolds to a full
sized keyboard, comes with a cary case, and pairs to one ios, one android,
and one windows device all at once, allowing you to switch back and fourth.

Enjoyu,

Erik

I tried on Applevis but may be am not using the correct search words.
so is there a good app that can do this? and it's accessibility is ok?
also it will be better if it can sync the data to Iphone to be able to
write if I did anything without my laptop with me.

 THanks in advance.

Over the weekend I moved my iTunes Library to a larger external drive. I pointed
iTunes to the new location. Started up the ATV and I get "no content in this
library". Wifi connection is good, home sharing is on. I can see the content on the
Mac. What am I missing?

This terminal commandwill download a youtube video and extract the vidio in
mp3, following the command will be an explanation of each part of
the commmand:

youtube.dl --restrict-filenames -x --audio-format mp3
--youtube-skip-dash-manifest --audio-quality 0 url

After the commandname the restrict part will put a hyphen in any spaces of the
name.

The -x says to extract the audio.

Format is obvious, others are available.

The manifest flag saves the time to download unwanted info.

The quality is from 0 - best to 9 - worst. The better the quality the larger
the mp3 or other file format.

Url is the web address of the video/audio file. This application will download
most all video and audio files on the web, nlot just youtube
videos.

Hello Mary,

Thank you for writing to Apple Accessibility. In our testing, we were
able to drop an app in a folder on the dock by using the following steps:
After starting Edit Mode, select the app to be dragged and select the
Drag option
Navigate to the folder on the dock and select the Activate action to
open the folder
If the folder opens to a blank page, swipe right with three fingers
to navigate back to the first page of apps within the folder

Select the location for the app and choose the Drop option.

We recognize that this behavior is different from how items are
dropped in folders that are not on the dock. We will report this
issue to the appropriate team.

Sincerely,

Apple Accessibility

Hi ET,

Try opening iTunes, then up to the File menu, down to Library, then choose
either Organize or Consolidate Library. Either or both to see if iTunes begins
to recognize your library on the Mac first. A side question, do you subscribe
to either Apple Music or iTunes Match and thus have a Cloud based library?

As for accessing my content it definitely is slower but that may be

Hello Simon,

Big Smile.

I completely understand.

If it's any consolation, please know that I only have use of this iPHone X for
one more day, only, as it is a loaner unit. (smile)

You're right about one thing, though, sometimes it really is best to go to an
Apple Store and try your luck.

I have a friend who both orders his new devices on-line and goes to the store.
If he gets the unit at the store, then he simply cancels his online order. Now
that's dedication to a mission, eh? (big smile)

Hang in there.

I no longer think you’re a nice guy!

I knew I should have gone to apple rather than my provider.

Subject: Mark on iPHone X: Left-Handed Low Vision, Display Accommodation Users,
Beware

Hello All,

Well, I now have an iPHone X, on loan for a few days.

I must say, as has been reported by others, that the new Home/App switcher
gesture commands work beautifully with VoiceOver. Also, Face ID was a breeze
to set up, however, I would like to note that I have enough vision to see
exactly how to position the front-facing camera.

Be that as it may, as a low-vision user, I toggle the Invert Color feature on
and off, countless times during the day.

On previous iPHone models, this was not a problem being that the Home button
was located in the bottom center of the phone.

However, with iPHone X, I must use the side button, located on the right side
of the device.

I am left-handed. In fact, to my surprise, I realized that I am really, really
a left-handed person when it comes to iPhone. (smile)

Consequently, it is no longer as convenient to use Invert Colors as I am having
to toggle this feature with either my right hand or hold the phone in a
slightly awkward position in order to reach the side button with my middle
finger on my left hand.

I do not have a case for this phone so don't know if I'd be able to reach the
button with my left hand were the device placed inside such an accessory.

In terms of making a decision as to which phone to purchase, I will need more
time with iPhone X. However, I can tell you that, at this point, I am leaning
towards iPHone 8 Plus if for no other reason but that I prefer the triple-click
button to be in a more neutral location on the phone than is currently the case
on iPHone X.

If there were no iPHone 8 series, I would most likely purchase iPhone X and
learn to live with it; however, currently I have a choice and for this I am
grateful.

What I hope is that, someday, Apple, along with all the other hardware
manufacturers, will allow user-defined hardware button assignments. For
example, iPHone 11 would have 4 hardware buttons, 2 on each side and the user
could determine which is for volume up, Siri, Screen Lock, etc.

Per chance to dream, eh? (smile)

Mark

RE: Apple TV and iTunes Library

2017-11-07 Thread Simon Fogarty
I’ve just recently got the apple tv4k and I gotta admit I’m not a fan of it’s
interfaces.
It seems to be slower than the aTV 4gen
But IOS 11 seems to be really screwy
It doesn’t like moving between contents within apps, and It seems to want me to
double click on things rather than the old single click on a show for streaming.

As for accessing my content it definitely is slower but that may be server
related.

I have no experience of using the Apple TV but I do experience from time to
time a curious lag in iTunes syching and communicating across devices. For
example my Windows machine and my Mac.
Generally this gets resolves after time but it may take a day for the machines
to catch upwith each other. I have speculated that this slow response may be a
symptom of the Apple Servers struggling.
Maybe 24 hours will sort it.
