A cheap voltmeter tells you maybe 10% of what might be interesting
about power quality. Harbor Freight meters, in particular, are really
quite sluggish, and update their readings slowly.

Subject: [MBZ] OT: While talking about guns

The other day I finally got a chance to go to the range and try out my .54
caliber TC Renegade that I bought back in
February.https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1754/27872740887_471c6a931d_b.jpg
With roundball it was kind of all over, I was holding about a 4" circle, I knew
it could do better. When I bought the gun I also got 150 460gr "Buffalo
Bullets" somebody had cast with a Lyman
mold.https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1726/27872644347_20db850c5e_b.jpgWith 70
grains of powder they were a little low, with 80 they're still a little low but
make a nice
group:https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1743/41842003945_8170d5acae_b.jpgThe
Buffalo bullets make better holes too, they're the ones at about 5 o'clock in
the picture.
I need to get a chronograph and see how fast they're going, with 460gr thats a
helluva punch. Of course there is an equal and opposite reaction and the gun
kicks like a mule shooting them. I ran out of powder at about the same time I
ran out of shoulder, next time out I'll go back to 70gr and adjust the sights
up a little...

That rifle looks very similar to the .54 T/C Hawken I built from a kit. The
double set triggers are awesome! That Renegade is very nice.

Subject: [MBZ] OT: While talking about guns

The other day I finally got a chance to go to the range and try out my .54
caliber TC Renegade that I bought back in
February.https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1754/27872740887_471c6a931d_b.jpg
With roundball it was kind of all over, I was holding about a 4" circle, I knew
it could do better. When I bought the gun I also got 150 460gr "Buffalo
Bullets" somebody had cast with a Lyman
mold.https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1726/27872644347_20db850c5e_b.jpgWith 70
grains of powder they were a little low, with 80 they're still a little low but
make a nice
group:https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1743/41842003945_8170d5acae_b.jpgThe
Buffalo bullets make better holes too, they're the ones at about 5 o'clock in
the picture.
I need to get a chronograph and see how fast they're going, with 460gr thats a
helluva punch. Of course there is an equal and opposite reaction and the gun
kicks like a mule shooting them. I ran out of powder at about the same time I
ran out of shoulder, next time out I'll go back to 70gr and adjust the sights
up a little...

Re: [MBZ] OT: Heads up Dan - is Davie (FL) anywhere near you?

2018-06-11 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Left unsaid is WHY gators are protected, it's not as if they're an endangered
species...
Mitch.

Florida Fish and Wildlife said alligators are protected by Florida law. Under
rare circumstances you can claim self defense when an alligator attacks you.

Wildlife expert David Hitzing said if an alligator is truly aggressive against
you or your pet on your property you can take actions against the alligator.
But if the attack against a pet happens outside your property it is even more
difficult to claim self defense.

Hitzing said that's because FWC does not want people shooting and killing
alligators at random and then claiming self defense.

"If your pet was truly attacked and you go and killed the alligator, I think it
would be pretty difficult for the state to prosecute you," Hitzing said.

Thanks, Greg. I’m looking forward on some fun at the range with this as well

As I understand, one in the chamber, an empty chamber, then four more?

I have an excellent RSO that I’ll have walk me through it, too.

Re: [MBZ] Mitchmobile?

2018-06-11 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
After installing the battery I cleared the codes. They did not repeat until I
left the thermoelectric cooler hooked up for a brief stop at a rest area. When
I restarted it coded again (I am guessing because the draw from the cooler
inhibited the electron flow to the computer). I cleared them again and I now
remember to unplug the cooler before shutting down. It's been many months now
with no codes. I don't think there was ever a sensor malfunction, just a false
alarm. "It was just the gizmo."

Was the yaw sensor malfunction constant, or intermittent? Was the "cure"
immediate with the new battery, or did you have to drive it a bit to make
sure the code didn't come back?

In some ways they are better since you have so much more information available
as forewarnings instead of listening for strange noises or waiting until
something breaks. On the other hand they can be far more expensive to repair
because of their complexity. Having one of each provides the best of both
worlds IMO.

[MBZ] OT: 'Nother project

2018-06-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Saturday I got to work on my gas grill. Here's the old burner:
https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1721/41801207405_81f29ba2c0_b.jpg
I suspect I could have welded in patches to save it but it wouldn't be pretty
and wouldn't last. That was the "cheap" burner which lasted 8 years, this time
I opted for the "premium stainless steel burner". If it lasts another 8 years
I'll be happy.
New burner, new briquette tray:
https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1738/42651741582_30813be2a1_b.jpg
New ceramic briquettes, new porcelain coated grill grates:
https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1723/40891086850_77a05fc341_b.jpg
Total cost about $150 shipped. $150 doesn't buy much in a grill...
To save wear and tear on the grill grates Angie bought some copper/silicone
mats that go over the grates and prevent crud from cooking onto them, seems to
work good and because they're thin you still get lines on the food.

[MBZ] OT: While talking about guns

2018-06-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The other day I finally got a chance to go to the range and try out my .54
caliber TC Renegade that I bought back in
February.https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1754/27872740887_471c6a931d_b.jpg
With roundball it was kind of all over, I was holding about a 4" circle, I knew
it could do better. When I bought the gun I also got 150 460gr "Buffalo
Bullets" somebody had cast with a Lyman
mold.https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1726/27872644347_20db850c5e_b.jpgWith 70
grains of powder they were a little low, with 80 they're still a little low but
make a nice
group:https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1743/41842003945_8170d5acae_b.jpgThe
Buffalo bullets make better holes too, they're the ones at about 5 o'clock in
the picture.
I need to get a chronograph and see how fast they're going, with 460gr thats a
helluva punch. Of course there is an equal and opposite reaction and the gun
kicks like a mule shooting them. I ran out of powder at about the same time I
ran out of shoulder, next time out I'll go back to 70gr and adjust the sights
up a little...

The one break action Rossi .22 single I've used as a very tight chamber. Some
rounds have too much lube on them and the extractor won't extract. Which
reminds me I need to bring a new .22 bore brush to camp to clean the chamber on
that gun.

Bolt action chambers tend to be tighter than revolver chambers which tend to be

I’ve got some empty shells in my range back I keep for dry firing my other .22
pistols, but for whatever reason they are not keen to go into the cylinder.
I’m wondering if they’re slightly swelled from being fired, making the open
ends a bit too large to go into the chambers?

I was going to practice loading it with empty shells, but I guess that’s not
going to happen…

Try it at the range and you'll know for sure.
If you do it right you'll have the hammer down on an empty chamber.
Thumb the hammer back and it'll be hot.
So if you get five shots in a row by thumbing the hammer back, you must have
loaded it right.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Heads up Dan - is Davie (FL) anywhere near you?

2018-06-11 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Davie is on the east coast down by Lauderdale. I’m on the central west coast -
Tampa.

However, we have had incidents of domestic animals (dogs, mostly) being killed
and consumed by alligators. You never want to walk your pet near an open body
of water for that reason. They’re frightening fast and can dart out of the
water and grab Fluffy long before you could react.

Was the yaw sensor malfunction constant, or intermittent? Was the "cure"
immediate with the new battery, or did you have to drive it a bit to make
sure the code didn't come back?

[MBZ] OT: Heads up Dan - is Davie (FL) anywhere near you?

2018-06-11 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
FLORIDAAlligator kills woman walking her dogsPublished: Monday, June 11,
2018

Authorities have recovered the body of a missing Florida woman after some
of her remains were found inside an alligator.

Shizuka Matsuki, 47, had last been seen walking her dogs Friday morning,
according to the Davie Police Department.

A man called the police when he spotted her dogs running loose and then saw
an alligator in a nearby lake.

Officials removed a 12-foot, 6-inch alligator from the lake Friday
afternoon and discovered human remains inside, the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a statement.

The remains were identified by Matsuki's brother, who recognized her
distinctive arm tattoo, according to WSVN, a Fox affiliate.

"We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and
friends of Shizuka Matsuki," the wildlife commission said in a statement on
Twitter.

There are around 1.3 million alligators in Florida, but unprovoked attacks
resulting in serious injury are rare, according to the commission's
website. The last death occurred in 2016, when a 2-year-old boy was killed
at a Disney resort (Christina Caron, *New York Times*
, June
9). *— MJ*

2018-06-11 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I examined the carfax I got from Kleb and determined that the MB battery was 9
years old. I guessed that it could be causing problems with the electronics
because of a slightly low voltage, and I don't try to stretch battery life past
5 or 6 years, so replaced it, even though it cranked and started up just fine.
I may have read somewhere that MB computer electronics are very sensitive to
voltage levels. That solved the error code problem. So, a lucky guess?

Re: [MBZ] OT - Today's Fun

2018-06-11 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
The revolver is indeed intended to fire two different rounds of slightly
different bullet diameter. And it was not the only one. There was also a
.357/9mm (.355) revolver with interchangeable cylinders. Not the best for top
target accuracy, but it kinda works, and is perfectly safe.

Congrats to Dan on a collectible and fun acquisition!

I think you mean something other than 22 magnum, I think that .22 magnum a
slightly larger caliber than .22LR so you'd also need a larger diameter
barrel.

Regardless, nice looking pistol and a great option for learning to safely
and accurately handle such.

Kim Jong Un Offers to Host Peace Talks Between United States and Canada

SINGAPORE (The Borowitz Report
)—One day before his
summit with Donald J. Trump, the North Korean dictator, Kim Jong Un, has
offered to host peace talks between the United States and Canada.

Speaking to reporters at his hotel in Singapore, Kim said that the rising
tensions between the North American neighbors were posing an “intolerable
threat to world peace.”

In addition to offering to host U.S.-Canada talks in Pyongyang, Kim urged
the immediate creation of a demilitarized zone along the border separating
the two hostile nations.

“In exchange for Canadian Mounties agreeing to stand down on their side of
the border, the United States, in turn, would dismantle its nuclear
weapons,” Kim said.

Although stating that “North Korea stands ready and willing to be an honest
broker” in peace talks between the two countries, he urged Trump to dial
back the “inflammatory rhetoric” that he aimed at Canadians over the
weekend.

“Violent language and threats have no place in international diplomacy,”
Kim said.

I used an Autel Code Reader Diaglink (DIY Version of MD802). It uses the
proprietary MB data that is available through the standard port, so provides a
lot more than just a generic OBD2 scanner. It proved invaluable when checking
out my ML, at a much lower cost than the type of system that Kaleb uses.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Today's Fun

2018-06-11 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Yes, a friend of mine in college owned one (probably still does) with both
cylinders that he would interchange. The WMR rounds were considerably
louder (we didn't have ear protection in 1970, or were even aware of it). I
remember being un-impressed by the fire and smoke coming out between the
cylinders and the barrel - much preferring my 22LR Stoeger replica Luger.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Today's Fun

2018-06-11 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
.22LR bullet diameter is .223
.22WMR is .224 and usually jacketed.

I wouldn't be surprised if most .22LR barrels have a groove diameter of .222 to
better engage the lead projectile, with .22WMR bored .224.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Today's Fun

2018-06-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes

Its huge. I've got a holster for it, the leather doesn't cover the end of the
barrel...

I'll try to get a picture of it the next time I'm at my parent's house. When I
got my concealed weapons permit the guy asked if I had any guns, I explained my
parents were holding onto some for me. He asked if I had any pistols, I said I
had a .44. He asked if I'd be carrying it and I explained that since open carry
is illegal here and since its enormous I probably wouldn't carry it...

10" Blackhawk would be a lot to carry on your hip.
Around here, those guns are scoped and carried in shoulder holsters for deer
rifle substitutes.
At least that's what a friend of mine does with an 8 3/4" stainless Taurus.

.22 is the diameter of .22 short, .22 long, .22 long rifle and .22 magnum. A
.22 mag revolver should be able to shoot all 4 rounds although the shorter

I think you mean something other than 22 magnum, I think that .22 magnum a
slightly larger caliber than .22LR so you'd also need a larger diameter
barrel.

Regardless, nice looking pistol and a great option for learning to safely
and accurately handle such.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Today's Fun

2018-06-11 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
The provenance on this model gun is actually pretty cool.

Apparently, with the popularity of Westerns at the time, Ruger decided it would
be smart marketing to put out a “six shooter” for the masses. There were a
number of different models, with barrel lengths up to 9” and “convertibles”
that had an additional cylinder that allowed the owner to shoot .22 magnum
bullets as well.

The distinction between models as they aged seems to be the “three screw”
identifier that applies to revolvers made before the late 60s/early 70s, when
Ruger redesigned the action and added a stop bar for safety purposes.

You can still send your Super Single Six in to Ruger to be updated, but I’ve
found that the three screw unmodified models are more valuable, so mine will
stay that way and I’ll be careful to load only five at a time so there’s
nothing “in the pipe” so to speak.

I’ve also found that Ruger will not sell parts without a serial number, and if
it comes back as an unmodified model they will not sell you parts without
having the revolver back and updating it.

Meh. There’s always Brownell’s.

It'll be fine, even with full loads. With a 4" barrel the answer would be
different.

Nice, I have its BIG brother in .44 Mag. I inherited it from a great uncle,
never have shot it though. With the 10" barrel recoil shouldn't be too bad but
I suspect if I wanted to shoot it much I'd want to hand load...
