[nysbirds-l] Historical sighting for Brooklyn (Kings County)
Some belated yet historical news for Brooklyn's natural history Paul Sweet, Collections manager for the Division of Vertebrate Zoology - Ornithology of the American Museum of Natural History alerted me a few weeks ago of a small owl that was spotted roosting inside a backyard dense wisteria vine on October 18th this past fall at the home of a person he knew. He requested a photograph of the bird which he received and identified as SCREECH OWL , gray phased. It stayed only one day, seen between 2 and 6 pm. After dusk, it flew up to a birch tree and departed. I just received more details today after inquiring Paul who contacted again the lucky observer. The location of the roosting bird was in the Cobble Hill section, on Baltic Street between 4th and 5th Avenues. Unless I received any other documentation, this sighting represents the FIRST SCREECH OWL sighting in Brooklyn in 101 years ! The last sighting documented on my office records was a Screech Owl seen on Christmas Day in 1908 (Observer, Dr Edward and Jane Vietor ), when actual Christmas Bird Counts took place on December 25th. (CBC founder and activist Frank Chapman was still conducting them I presume). [nysbirds-l] Floyd Bennett grasslands in jeopardy if Brookyln Borough President Markowitz has his way
Dear Birders of Brooklyn,NYC and NYS: I am bringing you this critical issue to your attention over Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Fields grasslands ( formerly an decommissioned airport) now threatened by potential development discussions ( info also based from the recent Blue Ribbon Panel set up by US Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Anthony Weiner, which last Tuesday eve I attend a listening session/public hearing at Floyd and Mr Markowitz spoke as well) ). Brooklyn Borough President, Marty Markowitz a NYC elective city official is trying to tell the Federal Gateway National Parks Service to turn it into more recreation amusement emphasis. Floyd Bennett is located on the southeastern part of Brooklyn , NYC, a critical bird migration hotspot where for the few past week Buff-breasted Sandpipers were feeding right next to the Aviator Sports complex ( which itself opened the Pandora's box for more potential commercial development ). Mr Markowitz's zeal obviously has no idea of the potential habitat loss and impact to threatened and fragile grass birds that use Floyd Bennett , especially rare birds including RED KNOT(seen on the runway in 2007) and Upland Sandpiper recorded on the Ebird Cornell database ( Check out the list http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ and see View and Explore Data). Since 2003, over 215 species have touched down or used Floyd for breeding or migration purpose. The grasslands have been impacted over the years and it needs a buffer perimeter which currently is impacted by overabundance of speeding cars and motorcycles ( the main old airport runway ) using Aviator Sports purposes. I am hoping you will be deeply concerned and act on Brooklyn Birds' behalf to stop this nonsense and save the last grassland spot in Brooklyn and which grasslands of this size is rare for NYC. This preserve , though it is not pretty in some spots, is a rich bird spot where in recent days also saw Bairds Sandpiper and numerous raptors ( frequent Peregrine Falcon) as well as some wintering owls ( Saw-whet, Long-eared, Snowy sometimes, Barn and on occasions Short-eared) I hope you will act on behalf of New York City birders. You can contact Mr Markowitz's office or further, contact Gateway NPS administrator ( google Gateway National Park or NYC Harbors Parks ) or the Director of the Interior Ken Salazar. A city official should not delve into Federal natural habitat ( but they do). Regards, Peter Dorosh President Brooklyn Bird Club If you want to contact Mr Markowitz's office , go to this website http://www.brooklyn-usa.org/ Check out the following articles from the NEW YORK POST of 9/20 and 9/23 From the NEW YORK POST Updated: Mon., Sep. 20, 2010, 5:07 PM Floyd Bennett 'next hot spot' By RICH CALDER Last Updated: 5:07 PM, September 20, 2010 Posted: 5:36 AM, September 20, 2010 Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz wants the feds to turn Floyd Bennett Field into the next hot green space. The city made Governors Island and Brooklyn Bridge Park overnight hot spots this summer by boosting transit services there -- especially ferries. Markowitz said that bringing ferry, water taxi and jitney service to the 1,400-acre former Navy airfield in Mill Basin that's now an underused federal park must be considered. Increasing its limited bus service and creating bike lanes leading to and from it are other options, he said. He plans to make his pitch tomorrow night during a public hearing on the future of Floyd Bennett Field, the borough's biggest open space and one of the nation's lowest ranked federal parks. It begin 6 pm at Aviator Sports Center on Flatbush Avenue. The pitch, Markowitz says, will also focus on how Floyd Bennett Field is perfect for hosting “cultural celebrations” and other big events, such as antique shows similar to a famous three-week show held annually in Brimfield, Mass. that attracts 6,000 vendors and hundreds of thousands of visitors. The meeting will be run by a Blue Ribbon Panel created by Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Anthony Weiner to guide the National Park Service draft a plan on how to boost services and cleanup Floyd Bennett Field. Improving transit options and educational opportunities at the park are among the ideas the panel says it plans to review. Since the park is on the Queens border, a similar meeting will be held in that borough on Sept. 27. Floyd Bennett Field was the city’s first commercial airport. In 1972, it became part of the federal Gateway National Recreation Area system. NEW YORK POST is a registered trademark of NYP Holdings, Inc. nypost.com, nypostonline.com, and

Some info from my note to RPA are excerpts from my letter to Sec of the Interior Ken Salazar this is the link for info and comments to send _http://www.rpa.org/floydbennett/_ (http://www.rpa.org/floydbennett/) Dear RPA, I am the current President of the Brooklyn Bird Club. My greatest concern regarding Blue Ribbon proposals regards potential destructive impacts to Floyd Bennett’s core grasslands and the North Forty section. The grasslands are currently the only one of its large size and kind in Brooklyn. Sitting on the southern coastline of Brooklyn with the Atlantic Ocean a barrier to migratory birds, Floyd Bennett Field is an outstanding migratory bird stopover site as well as wintering grounds for raptors, owls, and other rare species, that is under potential threat for major habitat loss if the Blue Ribbon Panel set up by Senator Charles Schumer and U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner regarding this grassland preserve’s future go forth with reconstruction proposals and excessive amusement type recreational plans. Floyd Bennett Field is the only unique grassland tract, in excess of 1000 acres, in urban Brooklyn, a critical locale that birds rely upon to rest and feed in before the intimidating ocean beyond. In a New York City borough completely devoid of this type of habitat, it is the last vast open space left in Brooklyn for grassland or open space inclined bird species. Since 2003, when records started on Cornell Ebird bird database (www. _http://ebird.org/content/ebird/_ (http://ebird.org/content/ebird/) ), 216 bird species were recorded historically. Some species are endangered, such as Red Knot seen August 21st, 2007 and October 1st this past year. The previously delisted Endangered Species Act species Peregrine Falcon, a nearby breeder on the Marine Park Bridge, regularly hunts in Floyd Bennett. Twenty-seven species shorebirds and sandpipers add to the impressive diversity using the runways and open areas; adding to the critical list of rare species, one can note Short-eared Owl, Bobolink, Grasshopper Sparrow, Northern Harrier, Eastern Meadowlark, all formerly breeding species now extirpated from the preserve due to drastic human caused impacts and disturbances. Further evidence of Floyd Bennett’s rich diversity and as a critical refuge for birds is found on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) “Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) “ table (_http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/9406.html_ (http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/9406.html) ). Of 118 NYSDEC SGCN bird species, sixty-eight species were recorded at Floyd Bennett (correlated with the Cornell Ebird data since 2003). This means 58% of NYSDEC SGCN species are found here, on the old runways, grasslands, and the bordering pine forest and maritime forest in the “North Forty section ”, which makes Floyd Bennett Field a very exceptional bird sanctuary it is. On our recent Christmas Bird census (111 years now nationwide) including Floyd Bennett as one locale among eleven Brooklyn regions, a first time COMMON RAVEN was reported near Floyd Bennett’s main southern entrance. 59 species were recorded on the Dec 18th Christmas Count in Floyd Bennett . See this link for Floyd Bennett’s Christmas Count birds seen Dec 18th, 2010 _http://tinyurl.com/36qs8pn_ (http://tinyurl.com/36qs8pn) What needs to be done to protect the core interior --the grassland tracts and the inner runways is eliminate all car traffic, many seen speeding excessively witnessed by visitor birders. Motorcycles were seen drag racing sometimes and encroaching inside the orange barriers.Cars should only access thru the current Aviator Sports entrance, not beyond the western most air strip and accessed thru the southern main entrance along the road towards the NYC police compound; the previous mentioned Runway should be blocked at this small road junction as well as all the runways within. Only the road from main southern entrance should be open to access the bay coast areas (Seaplane Ramp for example) and main pine grove scout camps (passing by the US Park Police HQ) The core grasslands and runways should have a nature trail network (walking only , maybe one for bikes or
[nysbirds-l] Four Sparrow Marsh preserve under habitat loss threat (Kings County) Brooklyn
_http://tinyurl.com/34lea83_ (http://tinyurl.com/34lea83) The above link is a local news item reporting on the Economic Development Corporation's (EDC) intent to build a mall or allow expansion of the current Toy R Us retail just south of Kings Plaza, which will impact the Four Sparrow Marsh preserve which the NYC Parks department designated as a Forever Wild site ( north border of Floyd Bennett watershed) . It appears nothing of the sort-- undisturbed green sites even if weedy --is sacrosanct. Four Sparrow Marsh is well known to informed city birders for special birds such as Wilson's Snipe, Sharp-tailed sparrows, Seaside , Swamp among one time or present breeders , breeding Willets and 90+ other species that visited the small 65+ acre preserve. Apparently given the city's budget woes or whatever reasons, it needs more retail malls and economic development on greenspaces instead of already developed property? [nysbirds-l] Potential future detrimental impacts to Jamaica Bay watershed
Dear birders and activists: As president and primary conservationist watcher of the Brooklyn Bird Club , two pressing issues have come forth regarding the habitats and the watershed network of Jamaica Bay ( which 4 Sparrow's Mill Basin inlet is part of and which the JB watershed encompasses the famous and bird rich JB Wildlife refuge) that most of us know is under great stress (leading to loss of marsh islands and grass ecology) than ever before from poorly planned coastal over developments , surface runoff, and water pollution ( i.e. nitrogen and phosphorus sewage outflow as one factor) . Peter , BBC On Four Sparrow marsh which I attended the Public Scope 2/17 Environmental Impact Statement meeting, check out the link to my birding blog _http://tinyurl.com/6ky3c95_ (http://tinyurl.com/6ky3c95) And I received a latest note from Ida Sanoff _isanoff@aol.com_ (mailto:isan...@aol.com) (NRPA president) on newly proposed additional JFK Airport runways. See below Hi folks, You've probably heard that the Regional Plan Assoc, (RPA) put out a proposal that involves filling in over 400 acres of Jamaica Bay to extend the runways at JFK. Many people, including my group (NRPA) have opposed filling Jamaica Bay for decades. Not only will this destroy precious marshes fisheries, but it will mean more flights zooming over to residential areas. To make a long story short, we need as many groups as possible to sign on to a soon to be finalized letter that the Natural Resources Defense Council is preparing. NRDC is a big, big outfit and they have been instrumental in pushing NYC to improve water quality, among other things. You don't have to be an incorporated group - we need neighborhood associations, block associations, church groups, yacht clubs, sportfishing groups, bird groups, etc. - ANY AND ALL INTERESTED GROUPS, ORGANIZATIONS, etc. to sign on to the opposition letter. S, please let me know if you are in. We expect to have the final letter in about a week. Will send it to you as soon as I get it. In the meantime, please reach out to all interested parties. [nysbirds-l] GBBC at Floyd Bennett 2/18 Kings County
Looking to get out somewhere on my off day, Mary E and I went to Floyd Bennett Field on an casual winter walk and for some Great Backyard Count fun in its first day, we noted among our observations : 3 early KILLDEER along with a flock of 46 HORNED LARKS on the Cricket Field adjacent to Aviator Sports. Conservative est 9500 Scaup at Dead Horse bay but all were behind the obstructive visually marine docks, At Fort Tilden, over 90 Bonaparte's Gulls in the surf which was nice to see on this casual birding day. But obviously the highlight for us was a bathing female PEREGRINE FALCON that was waddling and doing reddish egret behavior, opening its wings constantly as it moved and waddle all thru the water puddle and dipping its head into the water to sip and douse, on the runway near the Aviator Sports complex ( puddle was behind the orange road barricades). Very amusing to see and nod our heads about. for more, here's the list tally from GBBC Peter BBC Thank you for entering your observation in this year's Great Backyard Bird Count. It has a proven track-record of success advancing conservation for many declining species, such as the Cerulean Warbler, and other birds American see in their backyards. Joint Ventures (JVs), which cover the entire country and are key to carrying out bird conservation help by identify local land use priorities. JVs provide coordination for conservation planning, and implementing projects that benefits birds and other species and have protected, restored, or enhanced more than 13 million acres of important habitat for migratory bird species. State and Tribal Wildlife Grants program was created to assist states with their voluntary efforts to protect the more than 12,000 at-risk wildlife species around the United States from becoming endangered. The program leverages more than $100 million per year in state, tribal, local, and private dollars that directly support jobs in virtually all states. Slashing funding for this program also undermines the federal government’s ten year investment in State Wildlife Action Plans. The North American Wetlands Conservation Act has a proven track record of success leveraging over $2 billion in matching funds affecting 20 million acres through the work of more than 4,000 partners and has fostered public and private sector cooperation for migratory bird conservation, flood control, erosion control, and water quality. For every dollar of money invested in the program, an average of 3.2 dollars is
[nysbirds-l] Coney Island Gray Hooded Gull 8/1
The Brooklyn gull celebrity was present this early afternoon , first seen on the roof of the restroom pavilion in front of the boardwalk Nathan's, before it flew down to the beach area adjoining the boardwalk , between the pavilion and the artificial palm tree spray rig. This is near the West 12th street boardwalk entrance. Quite impressive to hear of the wide range of visitors nationwide to see the GHGU, good for the Coney Island region.Good Luck Peter Pres. [nysbirds-l] Auk Periodicals
I have been told by a friend -Paul Otto--who is a librarian at the Brooklyn Public Library (Kings County) that the total collection of AUK periodicals will be discarded by that Central library. If anyone wishes to save the collection , contact Paul. See Paul's email note to me Peter D Brooklyn Bird Club Brooklyn Public Library plans to deaccession this title, a quarterly publication from the American Ornithologists' Union. A staffmember alerted me and I'd like to find it a good home, rather than have it torn up for plates or even discarded. I called NYC Audubon last month and am still waiting for a callback, but the receptionist says they don't have much space so I'm not very optimistic. Can you think of any other organization who might be interested in this series? I believe we have it from v.1 (1884) up to sometime in the 1960s. [nysbirds-l] Fighter Kite string (manja) found in Floyd Bennett (Kings County)
Birders, A blight has developed with a popular kite war game, originated from southern Asia (banned in Pakistan) , carried over to here to the wide open spaces of Floyd Bennett Field. The harmful string used to fly the kites, called manja, is a very strong high tensile usually red ( or another color) string coated and embedded with glass ! The purpose of this war game is to cut the competitor(s) kite strings in the sky.You get the idea. see this link http://tinyurl.com/FBmanja The problem arises when this string is left behind , discarded unto the fields, posing great danger and threats to birds that use these fields for roosting, feeding or resting. Can one envision a Short -eared owl being a victim ? Last month , me and another birder found remains of manja which I rolled up at least 1000 feet across field A, my glove shredded afterwards. Last week, birders ( who contacted me yesterday) found remains of fighter kite string in field C where the Northern Shrike was and those birders also collected the string, also getting their gloves damaged. Its a widespread problem that is not enforced , likely because no stated policy or action has been clarified by Gateway administrators. I sent a letter to the Gateway superintendent tonight stating my concerns and need to ban and enforce by the US Park Police. I stated also the requirements of the Migration Bird Treaty Act in the spirit of that law even if it doesn't cover fighter kite string. If you happen to come upon this nemesis kite string, I advise you tell the Gateway staff person at the Visitors Center, if possible collect the string with a stick ( never bare hands).Or carry rawhide gloves and a plastic bag if you visit Floyd Bennett. Let me know if you find any and I 'll forward to the appropriate people or give you the superintendent contact info. Here's more To give you an idea of how dangerous this fighter kite string is, please read these links below of what the glass string did to a human being's neck. The second link includes pictures and comments about the kites at Floyd Bennett and Flushing Meadow (Queens County) . In the first link, apparently a young man had his throat slashed by some of the string. The sport has been outlawed in Pakistan because of the injuries. _http://www.thestar.com/news/article/1046683--kite-string-slices-man-s-neck_ (http://www.thestar.com/news/article/1046683--kite-string-slices-man-s-neck) The following NY Times link shows eleven slides , some showing the cuts on the kite flyer hands which the string no doubt will kill birds or at least maim their limbs or bodies and produce extreme prolonged suffering. _http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2011/10/09/nyregion/20111002KITEss.html_ (http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2011/10/09/nyregion/20111002KITEss.html) For more about Fighter Kites, read this link _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fighter_kite_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fighter_kite) Peter Dorosh President Brooklyn Bird Club -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park ( Kings), VARIED THRUSH returns 3/13
Rafael Campos found the VARIED THRUSH at the Ambergill Pool, in the Ravine. Later, about 30 minutes, I ventured over there and found the celebre thrush on a dead log next to a boulder hidden by fallen dead tree brush, along the back shore of the Ambergill Pool. This is the pool where birders watch from the Esdale Bridge birds bathing in the creek that empties into the pool, just east from the Picnic House. However in later afternoon, it was not relocated. Again , my guess is that this bird explores the whole ridge, going up slope and out of sight, maybe in its strange environment , its skulking more Other good birds to report are 5 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and our first EASTERN PHOEBE for Prospect. see my blog for details www.prospectsightings.blogspot.com and the google map. [nysbirds-l] 3/16 Prospect Park , Greenwood Cemetry ( Kings County)
A follow up on today's birds, particularly the VARIED THRUSH. The Ambergill Pool, in Prospect Park's wooded Ravine section, continues to be the most reliable spot for this extralimital thrush despite seen early morning on the original spot Nethermead Bridge back slope ( 930 am). A group of birders at Ambergill Pool were already looking when I arrived, the bird seen resting on a fallen log by the back shore. It appears it loylly prefers this location after noontime into the afternoon. Patience is a virtue. See Keir Randalls description 325 pm sighting to Ebirds Varied Thrush 1 Continues in the Ambergill, in the leaf litter on south side of stream, 50ft or so back. Watched from around 3.25 to 4pm and was still there when I left (no other birders!) Very active, picking through leaves with bill and also kicking up debris with feet. Occasionally froze on ground as if waiting out danger. Every 10 minutes or so it would fly up to a perch a few feet off the ground before returning to forage. a href=http://www.flickr.com/photos/22689183@N00/8563521722/;; title=Varied Thrush, Prospect Park 3.16.13 by keir randall, on Flickrimg src=http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8383/8563521722_c796166d98.jpg;; alt=Varied Thrush, Prospect Park 3.16.13 //a For access to this location for those of you unfamiliar with Prospect Park, from the Picnic House, go due east for the woods to an intersection of 4 roads. Look for a tall black chain link, go thru that entrance with the wood bridge on your right, hence follow the creek to a pool 100 feet down which is the Ambergill Pool . On the far shore where all the brush and fallen timbers are is where the Varied Thrush hangs out. A number of sightings were posted in the afternoon, especially from 3 pm towards dusk. Other news for Prospect were 10 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS some seen on the ground on Lookout Hill's Butterfly Meadow ( the lower of two on the summit); 2 hen COMMON MERGANSERS on Prospect Lake with rare HORNED GREBE, 2 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 12 PINE SISKINS at the feeders. Over at Greenwood Cemetery , on the Hill of the Graves or near Linden and Grove Avenues, best accessed from the weekend only 9th Ave ( or Prospect Park West Ave ) entrance ( get a free map at the sentry booth) was EASTERN MEADOWLARK. WE saw it well perched atop a cedar tree. [nysbirds-l] latest VARIED THRUSH Prospect Park 3/20 (Kings)
Latest VARIED THRUSH 3/20 early eve Tonight, upon a request from some birders who were on my impromptu Sunday walk wanted to see the bird after their miss then, I refound the VARIED THRUSH (VATH) . After looking along the southern slope of Quaker Ridge from the bridle trail from 530-600 PM, I succeeded in finding the bird by scanning the hillside with my bins ( not naked eye), the thrush 200 feet west of the Falkill Falls south narrow sloping path, about 100 feet up the hill. It wasn't offering good views but placing myself and my birding friends at the curve of the fence nearest lamppost G103 by the path terminus at Center Drive, we were able to see the VARIED THRUSH well enough , halfway up the hillside behind a large ash or mulberry tree with a whitish wound in its bark. See the latest map I revised to get an idea of where. You may have to scan with binoculars for the leaf flipping bird ( think Towhee ) as it generally favors this area most of the time this southern hillside with other birds and robins. It was still there up to 7 PM. click on the links https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=216559983552863855367.0004d85dd6288090dbbafmsa=0ll=40.661442,-73.970727spn=0.002527,0.004136 or http://tinyurl.com/Mar20VATH Also seen during the VATH search, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK juvenile perched at the ridge top;BROWN CREEPER along the bridle trail. Prospect Lake still hosts 2 COMMON MERGANSERs hens now here for a week, 3 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS ( uncommon /rare for the lake) drakes, with HOODEDS as well. NORTHERN SHOVELERS numbered about 25. [nysbirds-l] latest Varied Thrush (VATH) Prospect Park (kings)
The latest reports based on frequency is that this bird favors the southern slope of Quaker Ridge between the Quaker Cemetery and the Falkill Falls sloped path with rare excursions towards the Nethermead Bridge However , the bird is not easy to see or spot as its been working the middle to upper slope of the southern ridge. Today , Adam Welz spotted it 150 feet up, 2 days ago I spotted it about 100 feet up slope , but both sightings were behind dense brush. You ofetn have to scan the hillside. You can see a map track I created with approximate locations ( except for mine) from my blog. Just look for post with VARIED THRUSH. Keep me posted Other good birds overshadowed by VATH were two COMMON REDPOLLS seen in the Vale of Cashmere midafternoon, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS (Steve Nanz) with Pine Siskins as all week seen in Butterfly Meadow , in the pin oaks or on the leaf/twigs cluttered ground (Lookout Hill ) , 2 COMMON MERGANSERS in the Lake and today a FOY RUSTY BLACKBIRD (Keir Randall; Dennis Hrehowsik) seen in the Lily Pool platform area ( pool near the Boathouse), but then this early eve on Lookout Hill's switchback trail on the southern slope by the Maryland Monument. Yesterday I had 9 RINGNECKED DUCKS on the Lake, a GREENWINGED TEAL (P Colen) on the Upper Pool see all the details on my blog http://prospectsightings.blogspot.com/ Good birding this weekend Peter BBC -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Kings County twitter
Following up on NYC Central Park's twitter post, Brooklyn Birders have one Twitter feed I set up over a year ago in which birders can be kept apprised of rarities here in Kings County and I follow over 11 birders. Simply go to this link to my twitter account that I must accept subscribers to my account https://twitter.com/BBCKingsbirds After one follows, look for the little man menu to turn on notifications to your cellphone ( but you must enter your cellphone number into your account) This way , birders interested in Kings county birds are empowering themselves to follow up as some birders may not be internet saavy or lack smart phones. Furthermore, one can use their smart phone to book mark my blog http://www.prospectsightings.blogspot.com/ and check up on that from time to time for post as I am able to send rarity reports from the field to my blog via my cellphone. Or as usual I would post to Phils Jeffrey's ebirds yahoo in the nyc city local area as most times I do if I am able with time . These mediums enable anyone to look into for rarities. [nysbirds-l] Mulch on trails
Steve, as we do at my job for Prospect Park Natural Resources, we do the same thing: add mulch to trails. The purpose is to reduce foot and bike compaction, add fertilizer from organic breakdown into the soil to help the surrounding flora High human traffic is much responsible for the deterioration of trees whose roots are compacted and eventually die from over compaction .As least the mulch softens the compaction and Parks dept can be defended here. ( better than asphalt ) see this link for basic uses of mulch. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulch Peter BBC -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

This appeared in the NY Daily News. As many NYC birders already know , this has been a fight to preserve this habitat the past decade when I presided back then over the Bklyn Bird Club. [nysbirds-l] Kings County (Brooklyn) CBC PRELIMINARY results December 14th
To the birding community: Below are the results for Kings County Christmas Birding Count Circle. In the lowest count since 1981, with inclement snowy weather a factor among other things, 110 species were recorded. Reflecting the historic irruption of Snowy Owl this winter, it showed with a record 15 birds ( including five seen in a restricted landfill area) , smashing the previous high of 4 ( I think from 1937). Most evident was a shocking drop in Black-capped Chickadee and Tufted Titmouse numbers along with several other winter resident species which also evident in todays' Central Park (NYC) figures. Please note the numbers below for Kings CBC are not final, or preliminary due to still ongoing count week and subject to revised figures. Thanks to compiler Rick Cech for his tireless effort compiling and keeping/maintaining the records , assisted by Paul Keim assisting on count night, Mary Eyster organizing the CBC teams, Heidi Nanz setting up dinner prep and the countless members and birders helping out in any fashion. And as well thanks to the Prospect Park Alliance for use of their gorgeous venue ,the Audubon Boathouse.Anyone we forgot to mention, the Brooklyn Bird Club thank them for their voluntary effort. [nysbirds-l] Walkill NWR/Black Dirt Region, Orange County
Excellent success today in this winter enriched region for target birds, a trip for me and Mary Eyster intended to see Rough legged Hawks and Short eared Owls. At our first stop, Skinners Lane north of Pine Island hamlet, a Dark morphed ROUGH LEGGED HAWK. Second stop Indiana Road, we saw several light phased ROUGHLEGGED HAWKS and a surprising diurnal high flying SHORTEARED OWL, that at one point was chasing a Crow. A few Rough legged were on the sod fields, Inc a dark morph. Walkill NWR AT OIL CITY ROAD ACCESS proved to be the big star, as an estimated 11 - 12 SHORTEARED OWLS emerged 515 pm, with 7 flying over the parking lot and making a good number of passes overhead. We were also earlier treated to at least 5 NORTHERN HARRIERs, two GRAY GHOSTS, into the early evening and at least 7 ROUGHLEGGED HAWKS, one dark morph and an intermediate plumage bird. The road trail north of this oil city lot was best for the Rough legged and as well over 50 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS. REDTAILED HAWKs dominated the region at Oil City road lot area, including one very cooperative bird perched on the information kiosk then to the power lines. the trail north also had view of a juvenile RED SHOULDERED HAWK, which we saw catch a prey and ripped it apart. This latter spot at Oil City was noisy though with large waves of Canada Geese honking incessantly. Glad I don't have to hear it though. [nysbirds-l] Prospect Park (Kings ) April 14th
The second southern US species ( not native to these parts ) appeared on the current southern warm flow, a SWALLOW TAILED KITE that flew over the Lullwater at 9 am , observed by Jennifer Plummer Kepler, who took a photo of the species. A beautiful bird , very diagnostic and a perfect gliding smooth flying bird that marks this species. An awesome find for the park. See Jennifer's photo in the link she provide which is seen on on the Brooklyn Bird Club Facebook where it was initially posted. http://snapshotofnature.blogspot.com/2014/04/awesome-sightings.html The other big news is the reappearance of the YELLOW THROATED WARBLER at the same location as yesterday behind the Pools (mainly Upper). This time the bird cooperated for a multitude of birders seeing it low , even on the ground as I witnessed it . Thanks to Shane Blodgett for today's first report. When I saw it, it was in the Sweetgum tree just over the Upper Pool back view; then a short while later, it flew across the path to the back slope woods. Its been seen well and low for most of the afternoon. [nysbirds-l] Prospect Park rarities (Kings)
The dice continues to roll favorably with our two celebrity birds : PAINTED BUNTING & BLACK-HEADED GULL. With far fewer birders milling around, I went to see the Painted Bunting. It seems to be exploring more of the green roof as now the Bunting moved to the far north end of the Rink green roof. As one come up the curvy path to the left of the Lefrak (Lakeside) Center Rink admission north entrance, the PAINTED BUNTING fed within a snakeroot stand between the bridle trail and that pedestrian green roof path. This location was close to the East Drive. The other celebrity bird, BLACK-HEADED GULL is a clockwork bird. Apparently its coming into its favored location the west shoreline of Prospect Lake, by a red ice rescue ladder near the Well Drive/ Lake Drive T junction. About noon, one is best getting this gull if he or she hang out at this opportune time.Get there before noon. The bird was reported today first by Jean Shum, then Dale Dancis with Manhattan birders in Twitter tweets to me. The PAINTED BUNTING male continues atop on the green roof of the Lefrak Rink.It was seen feeding on the ground at noontime next to a black steam vent , between that structure and the mesh fence on the south side at the summit. A request from my office supervisor of the Prospect Park Alliance Natural Resources Department .PLEASE STAY ON THE PATHS; do not venture off onto the planted areas as compaction occurs, impacting the flora that requires additional labor by the supervisors crew. Thanks Peter Brooklyn Bird Club -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park , (Kings) rarities continue
Here in Prospect Park, nature keeps repeating itself. PAINTED BUNTING at the Rink , BLACKHEADED GULL(BHGU) at the west shore or northwest Prospect Lake. The continuity keeps going on. The PAINTED BUNTING during the morning was reported (RBate) at the north side of the steam pipes or ice making machinery of the Rink rooftop; the BLACK HEADED GULL was reported at the west shore 12;49 till I got another text message note it flew out farther into the lake 12:54. Word I received is the BHGU comes back and forth , showing up between 11 am and 1 pm. ( Observers Kathy Toomey , Jean Shum) How much longer do we have to see this dynamic duo repeat their appearances? As long as we here at Prospect Park like it. Both Will Pollard and Joe Girgente reported the reclusive bird between 10:41-11:30 am along the shore edges of Music Island towards the Lefrak Rink area, presumably in the southeast channel of the Island. Its been adept hiding in the phragmite or cattail edges since it was seen very early this morning. The COMMON GALLINULE has decided to travel. Kathy Toomey tweeted out a note at 315 this afternoon that she spotted the bird in the reeds between West Island and the Rustic Shelter. This is across the lake from the Rink, now the southwest Lake the place to see the Gallinule. The best vantage might be the half moon bench area (opp the island) looking northwest. Please pass along to folks and people you know or write letters. Pouch Camp is north of and adjacent to High Rock Park ; its demise to development would seriously fragment and degrade the forest habitat within the Greenbelt (the same situation that faced Sterling Forest years ago before the state bought the central remaining tract) .Staten island Greenbelt is a prime birding and natural wildlife area that I and my club visited from time to time.More details on the following link. _http://www.savepouch.com/index.html_ (http://www.savepouch.com/index.html) To get an idea of the property check _http://www.sigreenbelt.com/_ (http://www.sigreenbelt.com/) and below on this homepage click on the map pdf file and "trail map", zoom up to at least 125%,find HIGH ROCK and look to right of "Bloodroot Valley", and above Lake Ohrbach for the jeopardized property. or click on _http://www.sigreenbelt.com/Trails/trailmap.pdf_ (http://www.sigreenbelt.com/Trails/trailmap.pdf) Peter Brooklyn Bird Club (Kings county) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] --- End Message ---
[nysbirds-l] Historical sighting for Brooklyn (Kings County)
