[Oralux] Minimenu and file browser
Hello, A few info, about the minimenu. Of course, your feedback is welcome. The minimenu is used under Yasr to launch a program or read documentation. As a start, Oralux 0.6 alpha proposes four options. Minimenu must be enhanced to propose more services and options. For example, the web category can propose the links2 web browser as default choice and lynx (the cat) as other choice. Idem for the mail category: for example mutt as default choice and pine as other choice. A possibility is to enhance minimenu using a PHP script which will propose the distinct categories and items. They would be ship in a XML file. An example is copied at the end (* Note 1). This file could be updated, searched using PHP and its XML facilities. The user would have a speech friendly interface. Another possibility is to rely on the file system: each directory is simply a category, and a file is the final option. It borrows on the principle of the Elektra project by Avi Alkalay: Elektra relies on the filesystem to store the configuration. So, for example, the Web and Mail directories; under the Web directory, two bash files: links and .lynx (the cat). .lynx (the cat) is a hidden file since this is not the default option. The links bash file could be as simple as: links http://oralux.org With this solution, the file browser is used to browse the minimenu tree and launch a program. The user has a single interface to browse the menu or the directories, creates simple bash scripts and hopefully has a better understanding of the environment. Any of these two possibilities will take a little bit of time to implement. On another hand, Yasr is not really compliant with Midnight Commander at the moment. Another file browser (Deco) will also be tested. SpeakUp and Speech Dispatcher gives another possible environment. Usually to create a CD of data (not an audio CD), mkisofs is used to build the iso 9660 filesystem and then cdrecord to burn the CD. Using saveconfig under 0.6 alpha, this is better to save each proposed configuration (network, desktop, and so on). Just for info, two files are then created in the selected partition (configs.tbz and knoppix.sh). They will be used at the next boot. When you select the DECtalk software in the preferences, the previous dtk directory might be found and the synthesizer might be loaded. Otherwise, the serial number can be asked or an error message can be said. Hello, It seems that your PC boots up the floppy instead of the CD. Besides it, you have probably the Oralux CD released in July. It is better than 0.6 alpha but unfortunately it can not use the saved config in the floppy disk. This CD was released for the Libre Software meeting 2004 and for the further postal mails. So, at the moment, a fast solution would be to rely on a USB key to store your configuration and also your home directory. Sa version n'estpas la 0.6 alpha mais la version qui a été diffusée aux RMLL en Juillet et ensuite par courrier. Il est possible aussi d'utiliser une clé usb. Elles sont proposées aujourd'hui couramment avec 64 ou 128 Mo de mémoire flash. On trouve même une clé usb dans un couteau suisse. Sinon, il est toujours possible de copier certains fichiers de config comme le .emacs, le .vm ou la configuration brltty de la disquette à partir de Yasr. Usually when a usb storage device is detected, saveconfig proposed /mnt/sda1 as an option. For info, the lsusb command gives the list of the detected usb devices. Besides it, if you want to take in account the conf files from the floppy, despite the issue, it is possible to write a short script which installs the few interesting files. This script would be saved on your floppy and yes started after each boot. Yes aspell is used. Howver the ispell Emacs commands are the same: for example, this is still ispell-buffer (and not aspell-buffer). Hello Jim, You could have a buffer with only these three lines or you could place the three lines at the end of the current .emacs buffer as you want. eval-buffer remains silent if it considers the buffer as correct. Otherwise, if an error is met, it beeps and an error message is displayed in the bottom line, the so called minibuffer. As listed in the overview of Emacspeak (C-h C-e), it is possible to ask to Emacspeak to say the message using C-e a Yes, saveconfig must be called to save the new preferences. Just a few details about the configuration files and the persistent home in 0.6 alpha. The configuration files are saved in an archive named configs.tbz. When saveconfig is called, the archive is rebuilt. Besides it, the persistent directory (/home/knoppix) is saved in a file named knoppix.img. So any change in the /home/knoppix might be available at the next boot. The dot emacs is under /home/knoppix and we could also expect that its changes would be available at the next boot because of the persistent home. This is not the case because at the next boot, the archive, which includes the old dot emacs, will be used and will replace the new dot emacs in the persistent home. Emacspeak provides the C-e a command to repeat the last message; another way is also to visit the *Messages* buffer. Here is a detailed test case in four stages which works here. Sorry if this is too verbose. The Oralux release for the test was not 0.6 alpha but the CD demoed at the Libre Software meeting. * 1. Emacspeak is operational. A very short file is loaded (C-x C-f); it only includes these three lines: ;; add for 0.6 alpha (setq ispell-dictionary english) (setq-default ispell-program-name aspell) * 2. The cursor is placed on the second line (ispell-dictionnary), upon the word: english . Then this command is typed: M-x ispell-word There is a beep. Because the ispell variables are not yet correctly set up. The displayed message error is: Searching for program: no such file or directory, ispell. This message was not said, but is available in the *Messages* buffer. * 3. Then the three lines buffer was evaluated using: M-x eval-buffer No beep. * 4. The cursor is placed again upon the english word, and M-x ispell-word is typed: For some reason, I firstly received a error message Text is read only (the full message is ispell-command-loop: Text is read only). So, the M-x ispell-word command was typed again. A list of twelve possibilities was proposed: (0) English (1) Englisher (2) English's and so on. If this test can't be successfully achieved, thanks to indicate the error message if any. At the moment, I do not know the cause of this error message. Nevertheless, when M-x ispell-word was typed again the list of possible words was displayed. So once this issue happens, tries again M-x ispell-word; for example, a shorter way to recall this command is: M-x and then M-p to retrieve the previous command. Firstly, The New York Times website can be improved and I hope it will do; the 4 columns layout relies on tables instead of CSS, there are plenty of links which are not really grouped. The headers are missing, etc... On another hand, this website provides a rss news feed which can be a kind of direct and clean bridge towards the articles. This is not obvious, but Emacspeak or the web browser must linearize the tables to avoid to listen the first line of the first column then the first line of the second column and so on. So to come back to w3m and the cursor. Yes, when the cursor jumps to the next link, the full url is written at the bottom of the screen, and so unfortunately the url is said. This behavior can be changed using the w3m customize group: M-x customize-group w3m RETURN The concerned field is 'W3m After Cursor Move Hook'. This indicates the functions which are called once the cursor is moved. In deleting the second line (w3m-print-this-url), the url will no more be displayed at the bottom line when we tab from link to link. This will be added to our w3m configuration in the next release. Midnight Commander, a powerful file browser, is customized to have a better rendering via a braille display or a screen reader. The resulting software is named mcvox. mcvox is configured so that it can automatically convert some formats to raw text: Word files, Open office files, power points and more or less the Excel files. A few features have been added to Yasr and Mike Gorse kindly taken them in account: - the user can now restart the voice synthesizer if it stops talking. - Word echo: when the user is typing, only the complete word is said. There was a crash when 0.6 alpha launched Yasr and the minimenu altogether. And we had to launch Yasr again a second or a third time. There is now a workaround for this issue. Cicero TTS in french, by Nicholas Pitre and Stephane Doyon, is embedded. A speech server has been written so that this voice synthesizer works using Emacspeak or Yasr. GNU Screen has been modified so that the list of windows is better rendered via a screen reader or a braille display. The audio menu now relies on Yasr to set up for example the internet connection. An external program such as pppconfig (dial out set up) must be called and Yasr renders the program output. At the end, the audio menu asks if the user wants to save his configuration and then call saveconfig. Saveconfig now uses dialog-oralux: the dialog software rewritten in PHP and which aims to be better rendered via braille or voice. Bonsoir, saveconfig est une commande qui permet effectivement de sauvegarder sa configuration. Il est préférable avec Oralux 0.6 alpha de sauvegarder tout ce qui est proposé (configuration personnelle, réseau, etc...). Deux fichiers seront créés sur la partition choisie : knoppix.sh et configs.tbz. La partition ne doit pas etre de type NTFS. Lors du redémarrage du CD, si votre configuration est bien retrouvée, vous devriez entendre une nouvelle question, demandant si vous souhaitez modifier vos préférences. Hello, The ABNT2 brazilian portuguese keyboard will be proposed in the audio menu. At the moment, you could select this keymap using loadkeys (as root). For example in a shell, type: sudo loadkeys br-abnt2 It would be possible to update the /etc/sysconfig/knoppix file to automatically select the correct keymap and finally save the configuration file using saveconfig. The knoppix configuration file has one line per environment variable. The variable concerning the keymap is KEYTABLE. So please update this line with: KEYTABLE=br-abnt2 The knoppix configuration file must be updated as root. Using 0.6 alpha, you may want to temporarily change its access right, or its ownership so that you can update the file as knoppix user under emacs. Pour Analog Devices, il y a 4 pilotes possibles : intel8x0 via82xx ad1848 ad1816a Le pilote intel8x0 correspond aux composants AD1881, AD1881A, AD1885, etc... Le pilote ad1848 correspond aux composants AD1848 et AD1847. Si vous souhaitez utiliser le pilote intel8x0, il faudrait taper à l'invite du boot: knoppix alsa=intel8x0 Un soucis est le clavier qui est en qwerty au boot. Grace à une disquette de démarrage, il est possible aussi d'ajouter le code alsa=intel8x0 au fichier syslinux.cfg de cette disquette. Cette disquette est construite en lançant knoblind.bat sous DOS. It would be excellent to have an audio theme as there is a visual theme for the graphical desktops. This audio theme would include for example an introductory music, and a set of consistent, short informative sounds. The theme author will choose for example a Creative Commons licence such as ShareAlike [1]. Until now, we relied on two very basic sounds: the rooster (which is the Oralux icon) and a beep [2]. The introductory music could be a more stylised rooster sing, for example played by a synthesizer. The set of short sounds will efficiently inform the user when she is reading a web page: for example, if there is a long selection list, a short sound will be played instead of saying 'this is a long list'. If the list is short, this could be the same sound but a little bit shorter [3]. A possibility to propose a consistent set of sounds would be to start from an existing free music and extract some of the sounds. I tried this but it is not very obvious to focus on an interesting sound and remove all the noise around. The theme author could also play the interesting sound using a synthesiser. There are two musics (mp3 files) which could be interesting as a basis [4]. The chosen music could be played as a background music when the screen is locked. So this is a wish. Ce thème serait un peu comme le thème visuel des environnements graphiques. Il y aurait par exemple une musique d'introduction et un ensemble de sons courts et cohérents pour informer l'utilisateur. L'auteur du thème choisirait par exemple une licence Creative Commons telle que ShareAlike [1]. Jusqu'à maintenant nous avons deux sons très basiques: le chant du coq (qui est notre logo) et un bip [2]. La musique d'introduction pourrait être un chant de coq stylisé joué par exemple par un synthétiseur. L'ensemble de sons courts informeront efficacement l'utilisateur lors de la lecture d'une page web: par exemple, s'il y a une longue liste de sélection, un son court sera joué, au lieu de dire 'Ceci est une longue liste'. Si la liste est courte, le son serait juste plus court [3]. une possibilité pour proposer un ensemble de sons consistants serait de partir d'une musique libre et d'en extraire un ensemble de sons. J'ai essayé mais ce n'est pas évident de supprimer le bruit autour du son souhaité. L'auteur du thème pourrait aussi rejoué le son intéressant avec un synthétiseur. Il y a deux musiques (mp3) qui pourraient être intéressantes comme base [4]. La musique choisie serait joué en fond lorsque l'écran est verrouillé. Ceci est un souhait. J'apprécierai beaucoup si vous pouvez aider Oralux à concevoir son thème audio. Bonjour Michael, Au dela de la réponse ponctuelle, il faudrait je crois lire une doc présentant brievement les permissions sous Linux. En fait, une fois que vous êtes dans un shell buffer sous root, vous pouvez donner les droits en écriture et lecture à tous en tapant: chmod a+rw nom_du_fichier ensuite editer le fichier sous emacspeak. Si le fichier était déja ouvert, vous pouver le raffraichir en tapant M-x revert-buffer (M-x signifie Alt x). Si vous souhaitez par la suite, otez les droits d'écriture à tous, vous taperez: chmod a-rw nom_du_fichier Dans la version finale 0.7, on aura j'espere tramp sous Emacspeak, ce qui evitera de passer par le buffer shell. I agree that the speech recognition feature, if it succeeds, will increase the usability of the system, improve the digital accessibility for some of the persons who physically can't write, and also begin to lower barriers to the illiterate persons. In the future, we could propose in Oralux a speech recognition system based on Sphinx. At the moment, the commercial solutions are in a more advanced stage. So we could firstly try to work with a commercial software which would be included sooner in OraluxGold. The Fonix company proposes a commercial multi-language voice recognition software for Linux, at least this was the case several months ago. We could evaluate their demo (MS-Windows), buy the Software Development Kit, and then start to integrate it in an audio Desktop. If Roman or other persons can help to develop this feature as members of the association, we will do our best to provide the required softwares (SDK, runtimes). Plus tard, nous pourrions proposer avec Oralux une solution de reconnaissance vocale basée sur Sphynx. Actuellement, les solutions commerciales sont à un état plus avancé. Dans un premier temps, nous pourrions essayer donc de travailler avec une solution commerciale qui serait ensuite proposée avec OraluxGold. La société Fonix propose un logiciel de reconnaissance vocale multilingue pour Linux, c'était le cas au moins, il y a quelques mois. Il faudrait évaluer leur démo (MS-Windows), acheter le kit de développement logiciel (SDK) puis démarrer le travail d'intégration dans un bureau audio. Au sujet de saveconfig: Dans le cas du CD, saveconfig cherche les fichiers modifiés et les archive dans configs.tbz. Au redémarrage, cette archive est décompressée en RAM et occupe inutilement de l'espace mémoire. Un autre inconvénient est qu'on oublie souvent de lancer saveconfig. Un avantage : saveconfig peut donner de petites archives (pouvant tenir sur une disquette). Auparavant, mkpersistenthome permettait de stocker son compte utilisateur sur un support persistant (disque dur, clé USB,...) Ce script est remplacé maintenant dans les nouvelles Knoppix par knoppix-mkimage. Doug s'est aperçu qu'il vaut mieux ne pas l'utiliser avec nos versions de tests 0.7.2 et 0.7.3. knoppix-mkimage crée une image de l'arborescence des fichiers (/, /usr, /etc, /home/knoppix,...); cette image contient tous les nouveaux fichiers (de votre compte utilisateur /home/knoppix, mais aussi des répertoires systemes). Une propriété tout à fait excellente de l'image est de pouvoir à partir du CDROM, lancer l'installation d'un nouveau logiciel et de le retrouver lors des redémarrages suivants grâce au support persistant. knoppix-customize est fait pour customiser son CD, mais je crois que la version est obsolète aujourd'hui. knoppix-install permet d'installer, sans aucune garantie, un CD Knoppix sur disque dur avec tous les risques que cela comprend en cas de bogue du programme ou de fausse manip (PC qui ne démarre plus, perte de données,...). With a recent Knoppix (for example 4.0.2), knoppix-mkpersistent has been replaced by knoppix-image. This script creates an image of the whole filesystem (/, /usr, /etc, /home/knoppix, etc...) on a persistent media (hard disk, USB key,...) and populates it with the new files or the modified ones. Thanks to this excellent feature, this is now possible to very easily install a new software from the Live CD and still retrieve it at the next boot. Just for the record: for fixing the issue with Oralux 0.7.3, we use now the 15 February unionfs snapshot. As it did not compile with gcc 3.3, gcc 4 has been used instead; so the kernel 2.6.12 and its modules have been recompiled with gcc 4. minirt is now initramfs instead of initrd. Actuellement, on souhaite ne pas donner publiquement l'adresse de téléchargement de la version de test. L'ancienne version d'Oralux, la 0.6 alpha, peut être lancée avec une disquette de démarrage. Avec la version 0.7.3 ce n'est plus possible pour le moment. Si tout fonctionne comme souhaité, après le chant du coq, vous devez entendre un message en anglais puis un bip sonore. Vous pouvez augmentez le volume en appuyant sur la touche Entrée, ou le baisser en appuyant sur la barre espace. Ensuite taper sur n'importe quelle autre touche pour continuer. Il y aura un autre message en anglais qui demandera si vous souhaiter que le menu soit en anglais, taper sur la barre espace pour répondre non. Ensuite viendra un message en français, tapez sur entrée pour choisir les messages en français. Si vous souhaitez la tester, il y a aussi une version en espagnole.
