[RBW] Re: Nitto M151F bar story behind it on all those riv builds lately?
Thanks for the info. I have them on my Rambouillet. They are shorter ramps for sure but that's one of the reasons I got them. Very comfortable. But after using noodles for so long I'm used to the bend back on the tops. But seems like they're just as comfortable as noodles. Even for a century ride. I am also interested in trying the Nitto MOD. 174 bar which looks like a mini noodle bar. One comment I will make on the non heat treated Nitto bars: I had 41 noodles on my Sam. I was getting ready to lock up the Sam and the bike was on the kickstand. The bike tipped over towards the drive side and fell on the ground. After that I started getting left arm pain when I would ride the bike. With new bars everything fine no more pain. I checked the fallen bars for alignment and they were bent about a millimeter. Laid the bars with back of tops on table and barends touching table. One barend was a mm or two off the table. They rock when pressing them Mark bar set video style. I am surprised that the bar got bent so easily just from the bike falling over at a standstill (unless the bars come out of alignment that way.). I thought perhaps a heat treated bar would not get bent so easily. But I ride narrow bars. I don't like the feel of wider bars. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Hilsen and Hillborne have a certain panache. But FJ just makes you think of a boiler room operator somewhere in Brooklyn. Apologies to any one named FJ. [RBW] Re: VO Randonneur Front Rack on Sam Hillborne
As a data point the strut leg end meets my forks on my Bleriot at about the 11 1/2 cm, as measured straight down the side of the fork blade from the top edge of the fork crown lug. And that is with the rack set as low as possible with the tang bent as low as possible over the break calipers. If you could get the tang mounted under the brake calipers that might buy you another centimeter but if you are using wide tires with fenders there's no way you will be able to do that that I can think of. The tang on the rack will need to be bent over the top of the calipers and then down to the brake bolt connection to the fork crown. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] VO Randonneur Front Rack on Sam Hillborne
I had a 52 blue Sam. I bought the VO Rando rack and put it on my Bleriot. But before I did that I checked to see if it would fit the Sam eyelets on the fork. It would not fit. The Rando rack stays, if I remember correctly, don't come down low enough to meet the fork eyelets. Stay angle is wrong for the Sam. So I put an M18 on the Sam. Rando on Bleriot with Pclamps. Unfortunately there are not many choices of front racks for Sidepull brake bikes. But the M18 as well as the Mark's rack will work on a Sam. But I would go for the M18 as it is rated for way more weight bearing than the Mark's. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Silver 2 shifters
I tried using down tubes on my Sam and it was fun and definitely an interesting and totally new experience in shifting. I could not get used to it so I went back to bar and shifting. But I do like the super clean look having less housing and the buttery smooth shifting. Now that I have a Rivendell bike with dt shifter bosses on it I might try it again sometime and give it more time to see if I can get used to it. I really love that clean look. I was wobbly on the bike down tube shifting and it was it felt strange moving my torso that way although all I had to do was drop my hand and the shifter was right there but still i had to do torso stabilizing to keep a straight line while reaching down for the grab. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. The springs* do* compress. I can feel them do so on small and large bumps alike, at different levels of travel depending on the roughness of the road. Saddle will bounce more on the bigger bumps. Re: [RBW] Re: Can we talk about Riv bike sizing again?
I recently had my Bleriot fit mapped at Gravel and Grind by way of what is called an xy axis fit. It was then transfered tomy Rambouillet. The seat height and reach and bar height are different than the Bleriot if you measure with a tape measure. But the fit is the same in relation to the xy axis on the two bikes. I am not sure what that is. I think it is the relation of saddle to bb and bars to floor. Not sure. But I was told that trying to replicate one bikes fit by simply measuring the dimensions with a tape will not really get you the same fit because the tube angles and dimensions are different. I had (by way of tape measure when I first did it at home) the fit the same in space, but it put everything up and forward on the Rambouillet. Though all the reach and fore and aft and bar height and seat height measurements were the same as the Bleriot on a tape measure. The xy fit is done with lasers and I think measures the fit relative to bb. Anyway. The fit probs I was having on the Rambouillet are now gone and the bike is now just as comfortable as the Bleriot to ride. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Good eye! I ride with bars 1.3cm below saddle. That means slammed stem on my 52 Sam with Fistful of seatpost. My Tech standard stem didn't work so I got the Tech Deluxe as it had less rise. Tech bottomed out on Sam. Deluxe stopped about 2mm short of bottoming out so it worked. I don't think I knew about pearl Stems at the time. Now I use pearl stems. I traded the Sam for a Ram. [RBW] Can we talk about Riv bike sizing again?
You have to decide from your experience. I have found that I like the frame size better one size down from what Rivendell recommends for my PBH and seat height measurements. I have a short Reach. So one size down works for me and I still get a fist full of seat post. Even when sizing down I use and eight Centimeter stem Max. I ride drops about 1 cm below saddle height. I am 82 PPH and 71 CM Seat mheight. 5 foot eight I don't ride anything with the top tube longer than 55 CM. This is based on my experience. All my bikes have fistful of Seat post. 53 bleriot. 54 ram. So don't be afraid to size down if the bike model frame sizes are close. You can also check The geometry page to see if the top tube and stand over height is something that will be good for you. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Nitto vs Pletscher rear racks internal debate...
*Exactly* my experience, Rene. 38mm tires max on the 53 Bleriot and 52 Sam for what I am comfortable with for fender clearance. The sidepull brake arm hanging down from the brake bolt and over the tire (hanging lower than the brake bridge and fork crown) down into the space between crown and bridge and tires, is the limiting factor on how high you can raise the fender away from the tire at fork crown and brake bridge, even though the crown and bridge offer much more room. The brake arms block passage of the fender any higher towards the crown and bridge. This is why I am interested in a canti-brake bike for my next bike. I am surprised that RBW doesn't make all their bikes canti-bikes since they love fat tires and fenders. Also, I don't understand the hoopla about centerpulls. The Paul centerpulls I had on my 55 Bleriot offered no more vertical clearance than the R559's I put on. "The weak link in the fendering options on the Cheviot are the side pull brakes. In a way, that's the only flaw in its design. Had it been designed with braze-ons for centerpulls or cantilevers, there would be plenty of clearance. As it is, if you want wider than 35/38mm tires you have to forgo the fenders for safety. At least the metal fenders. And you're still dealing with what you accept as minimal safe clearance. Welp...I will say a shop owner told me that the vo hammereds break within a year at the mounting points. He said the non-hammereds are fine. I love my Honjos. But expensive. Hammered. They are getting a fuzzy white looking patina in them. [RBW] Re: The Cheviot has arrived!
Hi Steve, Personally I love drop bars. They are my favorite bars to use. :) The bike falling over can move a lever out of place. Then it is up to the rider if it matters to them or not how perfect they realign it, and the procedure they use. Drops are not, in and of themselves, hard to set up. During setup, one can take it to any level of neuroticism one wants when getting the hoods aligned. I am a neurotic setter-upper, so for me they are an involved task, self-imposed as it is. Apologies if I confused others and misrepresented the task. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: The Cheviot has arrived!
Nothing on initial build. But if your levers ever need relevelling, you have to remove all levers housing and bartape to repeat the levelling process to get an accurate result. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)
I bet the more the bike bus gets established in the eyes of the community, the more the drivers and pedestrians will help/move outta the way/assist/be aware of/cooperate/and respect the flow of the bike bus kids. A friendly "Excuse me, I'm escorting these children to school." should suffice as you pass cranky pedestrians and drivers. I mean, really, any adult who complains about or hinders the passage of children to/from school will probably be tossed right out on their ear by any authority figure called to the scene for any "grievance". When a kid is involved all bets are off. Kid wins. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] MKS Sneaker pedals reflectors vs. reflective leg bands.
I don't have any pedal/ankle reflectivity going on. Seems convenient to have reflectors on pedals, like the MKS Sneaker peals do. Just jump on and ride. No need to buy ankle cuffs and then have to put them on and store them between night rides. Anyone seen the Sneaker pedals in action? Good enough or are ankle bands that much better that they are worth the hassle of putting on/taking off/storing? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
