[RBW] Re: Susie W. Longbolts Build video

2022-07-31 Thread brendonoid
Thanks Eric, I have previously used these Neo Retros on my Appaloosa and on
an old GT. I didn't like them either time, I have used a lot of canti's
over the years and I would have put them at the bottom of the list. With
these different pads and perhaps a more agreeable rim-to-brake-pivot ratio
on the Susie they have transformed to some of the nicest cantilevers I have
ever used. Pretty bizarre how fussy they are that such a simple change has
totally transformed them. The lever feel is good now, too.

Keith, racks, fenders and dyno lights are always the hardest, slowest part!
I think most bike shops charging extra for such things indicates we are not
alone.

[RBW] WTB/WTT: a few used parts for a commuter

2022-07-31 Thread Patch T
Hello! In search of the following, used but functional is fine, looking for
low prices on your unwanted bits here before I go searching online for
deals:

- right-side top-mount thumb shifter, like an Suntour Power Ratchet, or
maybe your used Sunrace M96, ideally silver/mostly-silver. Will be shifting
7 speeds, friction.

- Short-pull brake levers for 22.2 bars, something like a silver Tektro
FL750 would be great.

- front rack that mounts to fork crown and fork ends, such as a VO
Constructeur, silver preferred. For attaching a basket.

A few random comparable bits I have to trade:

- VO Left Bank hbars in 23.8, with VO city levers, generic 80mm SR stem:
either as a cockpit with grip area wrapped with cork sheet + red Newbaum's
+ amber shellac, or parted out.

- Shimano Altus rear derailer

- Shimano 600 short-reach calipers, 6208's I think.

Thanks!

[RBW] FS: Deore LX rapid-rise rear derailleur (RD-M580)

Hi all,

I changed out the shifters and drivetrain on my Saluki, and can't think of
another use for the rapid-rise rear derailleur. So, it's looking for a new
home.

It's in good condition and went through the parts washer after I took it
off. :-)

$25, including shipping? (I'm basically just looking to cover what I hope
will be worst-case mailing costs...) Paypal friends/family preferred

How that’s a very cool part to have been stashing away. Definitely
the right time to be selling these since the “vintage” mtb market is so hot

Re: [RBW] High bars at a club ride

2022-07-31 Thread Steven Sweedler
I’m another rider who started wirh drops on my first 10 speed that I got
for my thirteenth birthday. Still on drops 58 years later, always level
with my saddle. Twice I’ve built up bikes with flat bars and always went
back to drops. I do spend most of my time on the ramps or hoods but
whenever descending, once my speed reaches 25-30 mph I always reach for the
drops and feel much more secure. I’m curious how others feel on upright
bikes while descending. Steve

It was that way the whole ride. Most club riders assume their drop bars

[RBW] FS: Quickbeam Orange 56 - $1250 plus shipping

2022-07-31 Thread Valerie Yates

Have you always wanted a Quickbeam? This orange size 56 QB has great
components and is priced to sell. I purchased it used from a list member in
2016. I’ve ridden it lightly since then, mainly as a townie/errand bike
with a small rack and front basket. As anyone who has ridden one will tell
you, it is a super-fun ride. The Bosco Bullmoose bars are great for
leverage. Has beausage appropriate for its age, including paint chips and
scratches, some covered with nail polish. The decal on the downtube is
deteriorating. Lots of pictures here
.

Price depends on options, described below.

$1250 (net to me) for the bike complete as shown, *minus pedals, saddle,
and seatpost*, and *plus shipping* (or free local pickup). This includes
the following:

Bosco Bullmoose Handlebars 54

Misha Cork Grips with shellack

Tektro Brake Levers

Front brakes– Paul neo-retro cantis

Rear brakes– Paul touring cantis

Crankset: Sugino triple 170 with chain guard-40-32

Wheels: polished SunRims CR 18 with Paul high flange black hubs and DT
black spokes

White Industries Dos Eno freewheel 17/19 (red) and Miche Technology (made
in Italy) 16 tooth fixed on the flip side. These have worked great in my
hilly neighborhood.

Tires: Compass 700-32 Stampede Pass (lots of life left in them)

Saddle and seatpost – not included. It takes a 27.2 seat post.

If there’s not interest in it as shown, I can offer some flexibility to
reduce the price. I love the Bosco bullmoose handlebars so if you are
planning a different cockpit, I will reduce the price by $150 if we
exclude handlebars, brake levers, and grips.

For boxing and shipping, I will pay to have it professionally packed by my
LBS, a bike flights partner. Buyer to arrange and pay for the shipping /
insurance directly with bike flights, who will pick up the bike from my
LBS.

Happy to answer any questions either by reply to this thread or by email.
Interested in buying? Send me an email and let’s work out the details.

Val in Boulder, CO

Hello John,

I recently had a frame/fork powder coated so it had the same problem, the

ream the holes out. I don't recall which size I used, but I can check if
needed.

Good luck,

I just installed an IQ-X on my Atlantis, and hoo boy, is it bright, pretty,

Re: [RBW] High bars at a club ride

2022-07-31 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch
Marc Irwin stated: "The point is that riders don't use that position (I'm
assuming drops). Even against the wind, only one with drop bars actually
got into the lower position. They all stayed up on the hoods or the flats
the whole ride."

Typically, this is because their stems are too low and the drops are too
low to use, unless your a pro rider or a top athlete. If you raise the
stem to get the tops at saddle height, the drops are very usuable. I
believe Grant P made this point in a RR in the past.

Also, above 15 mph, I can feel the increase drag from the wind resistance
and go down to the drops to reduce it. Others may be content with being
more upright, but you need additional energy to do it.

Just remember, wind resistance varies as the square of the velocity: 15
mph has 2.25 times the wind drag as at 10 mph ( (15/10)^2 ), even though
you are going only 1.5 times as fast.If you a going into a headwind,
the wind speed adds to you wind resistance.

Re: [RBW] FS: Tunitas 139 Basket Bag

2022-07-31 Thread Alex K
I wish I could say it would work with the half basket, but honestly it's
gonna be best with a full-sizer. You'd have to really cinch it down, as
the bag is already maxing out every square cm of the basket. It's a
surprisingly voluminous bag, when fully maxed out and it gets quite tall
when filled with, say, a large load of laundry. So, yeas, it would work,
but if you filled it fully, I'd reckon it might want to lean and/or sway.

Hope that helps.
A

[RBW] Re: On Brakes and Bosses

2022-07-31 Thread John Rinker
Thanks John! Actually, it's not the holes that are the problem, but the
base of the brake bosses, just before the holes, is where the boss is too
wide to allow the brakes to slide down far enough so that the pin goes into
a hole.

Cheers,
John

[RBW] Re: FS: New helmet, bartube, tools, $50 each

2022-07-31 Thread Joe Bernard
PayPal Friends or Venmo. Prepare to be shocked by shipping, I've calculated
for two potential buyers so far and it's not cheap!
