[Bug 218032] Re: Hardy Heron: Adding SMB printer fails
This is not a design flaw, it's a deliberate design decision; use of plaintext passwords on an untrusted network is insecure, and in Ubuntu 8.04 smbspool (and other samba clients) will no longer allow negotiation of plaintext connections unless the user takes explicit action to enable this. To enable plaintext authentication, set 'client plaintext auth = yes' in the [global] section of /etc/samba/smb.conf. ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- Hardy Heron: Adding SMB printer fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218032 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 220844] Re: wbinfo fails to enumerate users and groups
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve Ubuntu. I see a few inconsistencies in the output you've shown. I don't know if any of them relate to this bug, but they might, so I point them out. /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 ubuntu 127.0.0.1 ubuntu.domainname localhost ubuntu This third record is wrong. The authoritative name (the one in the first column) for 127.0.0.1 must always be localhost. Assuming you want ubuntu.domainname to be your canonical hostname, this should be: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 ubuntu.domainname ubuntu /etc/samba/smb.conf: workgroup = DOMAINNAME realm = DOMAINNAME This must also be wrong, because a realm is a DNS domain name and a workgroup is a NetBIOS name. The realm name should therefore have at least one dot in it, and the workgroup name should have no dots in it, so these shouldn't be the same. (I've seen reports from other users who used the realm name as the workgroup name and they didn't have any problems as a result of this - but it is incorrect and renders your system incompatible with some others.) netbios name = ubuntu This is not wrong, but definitely redundant; I recommend not encoding this here, since that increases the number of places you would need to change it if your hostname ever changed. # /etc/init.d/winbind stop # /etc/init.d/samba restart # /etc/init.d/winbind start [...] # net ads join -U Administrator This looks backwards to me. Surely you need to restart winbind /after/ you've done your net ads join, so that winbind picks up the domain join information? ADS doesn't need to be able to resolve your hostname at all in order to let you enumerate groups or users, so I think the static vs. dynamic IP question is a red herring, and the real issue is probably that winbind was not restarted after the join. Here is an abridged test showing this behavior: $ sudo net ads join -U Administrator Administrator's password: Using short domain name -- UBUNTU-WP Joined 'DARIO' to realm 'UBUNTU-WP.COM' $ wbinfo -u Error looking up domain users $ sudo /etc/init.d/winbind restart * Stopping the Winbind daemon winbind [ OK ] * Starting the Winbind daemon winbind [ OK ] $ wbinfo -u UBUNTU-WP\administrator [...] $ So indeed, wbinfo only works after you've restarted winbind. I'm therefore closing this bug as invalid; please reopen if you think this is a mistake. ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- wbinfo fails to enumerate users and groups https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220844 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Bug 229631. Missing partitions and space from drive after 8.04 upgrade. Unrecognized partition table for drive 81. Please rebuild it using a microsoft compatible Fdisk tool (err=1). What the H. is this? When I boot Ubuntu, I get this message and my 3rd partition on my HD does not show up under Ubuntu (at least I think it's no.3--Partition G under WinXP). Is this the partition into which Ubuntu went when I set up the dual boot? I cannot access this partition under Ubuntu, but fortunately, I don't need much in it. I can boot into WinXP and into Ubuntu (just downloaded and installed about 200 updates). Ubuntu seems slower than XP but perhaps thats due to dual boot configuration. [Bug 156213] Re: In Gnome, Kde apps umount usb drives when they close
This bug is very annoying. A temporary workaround is to have a file open from that hard drive. This will make the system deny Amarok request to unmount the drive. For example: if I play music from the USB HDD with another player (or watch a movie) and I close Amarok, the drive is NOT unmounted. This also suggests that there is no data loss on the drive when amarok is unmounting it, because no other app was using it anyway. [Bug 258104] [NEW] [PATCH] gtk apps cannot use remote ipp:// printers
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0 Summary: I can't print, due to a well-understood bug already fixed in upstream gtk+; please backport the bugfix to hardy. A minimal backport patch is attached. --- more details --- Here's the setup: I have a printer attached via usb to the server 'algernon', which is sharing the printer via CUPS. So the printer is accessible as ipp://algernon/printer/blahblah. I want to print to this printer from my laptop, 'ged'. So I went to System - Administration - Printing on ged, hit New Printer - Internet Printing Protocol, entered algernon as the host, etc. So at the end of it, cups on ged knows about the printer on algernon, and printing to it works fine. BUT, ged is running up-to-date hardy, which has a buggy gtk, so gtk apps still cannot print. The problem is a bug in gtk's cups print backend, where if you have a local queue which feeds a remote cups-hosted (ipp) printer, then the gtk print dialog will let you attempt to print to that local queue, but then it will screw up in actually submitting the print job, and as far as the user can tell it just vanishes without a trace. (You hit Print, the dialog box disappears, nothing else happens.) The exact problem is that the gtk cups backend submits connects to the local cups daemon on ged and attempts to submit the job, but when it comes time to tell the local cups daemon which printer it is submitting to, it gives it the remote url (ipp://algernon.localnet/blahblah) rather than the local url (ipp://localhost/blahblah). The local host, of course, has no clue what to do when asked for a printer on a different server entirely. The symptom of this is that ged's /var/log/cups/error_log says: D [15/Aug/2008:03:10:32 -0400] Print-Job ipp://algernon.localnet:631/printers/HP_LaserJet_2200_USB_1 D [15/Aug/2008:03:10:32 -0400] Print-Job client-error-not-found: The printer or class was not found. Apparently a workaround is to print to the remote printer directly, and take the local cups daemon out of the loop; however, you can only do this if you have mdns autodiscovery for the remote printer (otherwise it doesn't show up as an option in the print dialog at all), and my print server is running etch, which doesn't have a new enough cups for that. Also, relying on autodiscovery for the printer I use all day is sort of silly. This bug was first noticed on Redhat[1], and the fix is in upstream (pre-release) GTK+[2]. The upstream fix took two tries; the first attempt was r20185[3], then r20360[4] reverted r20185 and added the correct fix. As a result, the patch from r20360 does not apply trivially to the version of GTK+ in Ubuntu. I'm attaching a reduced patch that includes the bugfix without the reversion. Ok, the exact same problem has happened again. I haven't rebooted yet, and I'm willing to forgo rebooting this machine for an indeterminate amount of time, though I don't know how long before I'll really need my machine back. If somebody is interested in instructing me in what steps I could take to best provide debugging information for this problem, I am all ears. However, exploiting opportunity will require prompt attention. The only GUI applications that appears to work is the file manager and Compiz. I can successfully start a VNC server and connect to it, however no graphics comes through the VNC connection, other than a mouse cursor. SSH access works fine, however. For starters, is there a way I can change process limits of a running process, e.g. /proc/PID/limits?, so that I might get some more core files? Is there some way I can do this through /proc/PID/? I say this because there is a visual difference on the screen of what happens when I start applications from the file manager versus starting applications otherwise.
