[Bug 532458] Re: update-binfmts: /var/lib/binfmts/wine corrupt: out of binfmt data

2010-03-06 Thread Brett Randall
Looks like I might have a failed install of wine - attempting to re-
apply 1.1.39-0ubuntu1~karmic5 reproduces the python2.4 + python2.5
installation failure.

Happy to go back to Wine on karmic main, I removed the PPA repo and
attempted to reinstall Wine 1.1.31-0ubuntu3, which triggers errors this
time with python2.4-minimal and python2.5 minimal.

The other possibility is that I moved up to Telepathy/Empathy from PPA
the other day, as it is utterly broken for ICQ+AIM in Karmic.

now connect to AIM and ICQ.

[Bug 462530] Re: ICQ doesn't work in Empathy

2010-03-01 Thread Brett Randall
I have both AIM and ICQ broken with the very same symptoms as this
ticket, in Karmic. I could open a new ticket, but it's bound to be
marked as a duplicate of this ticket.

apt-cache policy empathy
empathy:
  Installed: 2.28.1.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 2.28.1.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.28.1-1ubuntu1 0
500 http://ftp.iinet.net.au karmic/main Packages

As per Marat above @ #16. That is, Karmic is not seeing the 2.29
packages, and I am seeing the same problem.

I wonder how many issues the Lucid package might cause on Karmic -
anyone have any thoughts on that? I'd switch back to Pidgin, but it
seems to have developed a 100% CPU spin issue since I last used it.

[Bug 527431] [NEW] gtk_window_set_decorated(window, FALSE) does not work when called before showing the window

2010-02-24 Thread Brett Simmers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0

Calling gtk_window_set_decorated(window, FALSE) before showing the
window does not seem to be working (the window will still have window
decorations). I've attached a small reproduction case with more details
in a header comment. Building and running that program on versions of
Ubuntu 10.04 give the expected result of no window decorations on both
windows. In Ubuntu 10.04, the window that was shown after the call to
gtk_window_set_decorated() will still have decorations.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 alpha, up to date as of 14:30PST February 24th.
The gtk package version is 2.19.5-1ubuntu6. This is reproducible with
both Metacity and Compiz, so it is most likely not a WM issue.

[Bug 527431] Re: gtk_window_set_decorated(window, FALSE) does not work when called before showing the window

2010-02-24 Thread Brett Simmers
I took a look at the documentation for the function to make sure this
behavior wasn't intentional, and it actually recommends calling
set_decorated before showing the window, even though that's what
triggers the bug:

Depending on the system, this function may not have any effect when
called on a window that is already visible, so you should call it before
calling gtk_window_show().

Yay works. Thanks!

the settings didn't reload on resume from suspend using FSPC, with
script above, so I modified the script to use the echo's instead, which
DOES work. fspc not auto-working, either re-running manually via
command line or . . .

echo -n # # # /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/accel

some good 3 sets are 5 2 3 and 4 1 4 and 3 1 4 and 2 1 3 and 7 1 4

followed instructions in INSTALL file. except for kernel patching,
since the psmouse.ko was already patched.

Using mouse and not suspending for now. Unsure how to proceed. . .?

[Bug 311869] Re: Add driver for Sentelic Touch pad

2010-02-12 Thread Brett Lyons
yeah it would be good to be able to disable tap-to-click or use
syndaemon (Maybe? -- I haven't tried, FN + F3 works for me for now)

I also have an MSI A6000 and I used phil's source module tar, and FSP
works, except that after a suspend, if I touch the pointer at all it
goes crazy with clicks and movement and causes the machine to be
unusable without a restart. So the mousepointer goes crazy, and then
the windows freeze in their positions, and the USB mouse (Apple
Multibutton) still moves the pointer but clicking on things like title
bars doesn't result in being able to drag the window etc . . . and when
I press the power button, the shutdown - restart - suspend - hibernate
window pops up and i am able to restart that way by keyboarding to the
restart button and hitting enter.

if I DON'T touch the trackpad after a suspend, it continues running
great.

Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit.

[Bug 519930] [NEW] landscape-sysinfo very slow when remote mounts are unavailable

2010-02-10 Thread Andrew Brett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: landscape-client

When my machine has mounted samba shares which are no longer available
(because the remote machine is down), landscape-sysinfo times out when
trying to get usage details for the mount. If several mounts are

leading to extremely slow ssh logins for no discernable reason. It took

2010-02-03 Thread Brett Alton
As of Karmic, ca.archive.ubuntu.com is still (since as along as I can
remember -- been using Ubuntu since Breezy) MUCH slower than
us.archive.ubuntu.com or archive.ubuntu.com.

Where are the mirrors located and who is hosting it? Doesn't University
of Waterloo provide a mirror and offer it to a lot of distros? Maybe
they can mirror Ubuntu's archive too.

2010-01-30 Thread Brett Alton
This still effects my HP Pavillion a200n and 503n machines using Ubuntu

[Bug 352228] Re: Intel Wireless 5300 AGN: iwlagn: No space for Tx

2010-01-26 Thread Brett Randall
Per #51, switching to the current wicd (1.6.1-3ubuntu1) 100% fixed this
for me, although I don't expect that clears either the drivers,
supplicant or NM, but it might be a place to draw comparisons from.
Moving to wicd did mean I was forced to write my own ppp script for a 3G
wireless card.

[Bug 243697] Re: network-manager-vpnc doesn't start scripts in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatch.d/

2010-01-21 Thread Brett Delle Grazie
Hi,

A similar problem does exist in Karmic in package:
0.8~a~git.20091013t193206.679d548-0ubuntu1

The problem was:
/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/01ifupdown does not support vpn-up / vpn-down
operations and therefore exits with an error (1). It is possible (but
unconfirmed) that if a dispatcher script exits in error state, subsequent
scripts are not called.

My fix was:

[Bug 510943] [NEW] Kernel Mode Setting on Intel 865G chipset results in DRI not working

2010-01-21 Thread Brett Delle Grazie
Public bug reported:

Using Kernel Mode Setting on Intel 865G chipset results in non-working
DRI in X windows

Please note I am using the packages from the X Updates PPA so I'm using
the Intel 2.9.x video driver for X.

The information attached is with kernel mode setting disabled (thus DRI2
works). I will attach a second set without it disabled to demonstrate.

Thanks,

Brett

[Bug 507734] [NEW] Ubuntu fails to give user reason or knowledge that external hdd failed to mount

2010-01-14 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

When I turn on my external 1.5TB Western Digital hard drive, it fails to
mount and I am sitting here wondering what has happened.

If you read dmesg, you receive this report:

[ 21.207411] usb-storage: device scan complete
[ 41.916431] usb 1-8: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
[ 52.196084] usb 1-8: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
[ 68.476166] usb 1-8: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
[ 68.740094] usb 1-8: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
[ 79.000128] usb 1-8: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
[ 79.145073] scsi 2:0:0:0: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery

Can there not be GUI integration that gives troubleshooting information
to the user on how to fix this problem?

It's formatted to ext4 and I have no idea how to mount the hard drive
'after error recovery'... Until I found a workaround:

The drive gets mounted when you disconnect and reconnect, leaving the
power on to the device.

Should the user no be warned that the drive failed to mount and be given
way to troubleshoot? It seems that the Linux kernel is extremely
sensitive to when the drive is connected and whether there is power to
the device already or not, making users fiddle to get it to work.

[Bug 476652] Re: sound stops and begins clicking and popping

2010-01-05 Thread Brett Williams
I also am having problems with my CM8738 based card since 9.10 upgrade
(9.04 worked perfectly). It starts out working fine, then sound will
just stop. When I really need the sound to work, I'll try a cold boot.
Sometimes the pulseaudio based sound config doesn't even show the card,
even though lspci does.

Performing 'alsa force-reload' appears to correct the problem (even when
the card refuses to show up in the Sound Preferences dialog, it will
after running this).

I think there is something amiss with this driver for 9.10.

[Bug 396564] Re: grub2 shows 'biosdisk read error', then boots

2009-12-23 Thread Brett Howard
Just to add my 2 cents... I was seeing this error and got here because
I was having problems booting after I'd intentionally degraded an array
to replace a disk in it. It was this error that got me here.

After reading through this I tried the idea mentioned to disable the
floppy drive that was enabled in the BIOS but not connected to the
motherboard and now I no longer have this error.

For those who are interested the reason why I wasn't booting was because
my mother board (Asus P5K Pro) doesn't have the primary master / primary
slave on SATA ports 1 and 2. They are 1 and 3. So /dev/sdc was
actually the Secondary Master drive like one would assume but the
secondary master drive is plugged into SATA port 2. Thus I get to
restore my array onto that drive (will take about 3 days) and then I can
start intentionally degrading the proper drive. Ug!

Anyway thanks to those here for telling me how to remove this error
(which really wasn't a bug at all).

[Bug 496256] Re: Nokia CS-15 USB modem does not work anymore and can not be installed in Karmic

2009-12-18 Thread Neil Brett
I posted a fix for getting a Nokia CS-15 to work in Karmic (9.10) here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/456162

Not sure if its the same modem as you are using, but some of the errors
you are getting look familiar

I havent had any problems with performance since getting it working, but
it hasnt been long

[Bug 456162] Re: nokia cs-15 3g modem support

2009-12-18 Thread Neil Brett
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 496256 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/496256

I was able to get my Nokia CS-15 working, but had to make three changes
and add a package:

First, make sure usb_modeswitch is installed using Synaptic (my system
didnt have it and I needed to get it).

Then, you need to modify the usb_modeswitch config to recognise the modem:
In /etc/udev/rules.d/usb_modeswitch.rules, add the following lines at the end

###
#
# Nokia CS-15
#
# Contributors: Razvan Dragomirescu, Antti Turunen
#
#DefaultVendor= 0x0421
#DefaultProduct= 0x0610
#
#MessageEndpoint=0x01
#
#MessageContent=5553424312345678061b000200
SUBSYSTEM==usb, SYSFS{idVendor}==0421, SYSFS{idProduct}==0610,
RUN+=/usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch --default-vendor 0x0421 --default-product 0x0610
--message-content
5553424312345678061b000200
###

and then in /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf, add the following lines at the end
of the file:

###
Nokia CS-15

;DefaultVendor=0x0421
;DefaultProduct=0x0610

;MessageContent=5553424312345678061b000200

These sections are needed so usb_modeswitch can recognise the device as one
that needs to be switched from storage mode to modem mode, and then can do it.

Making these changes gets the lights on the modem working, but you still
wont be able to connect. The remaining issue is addressed (for the
CS-10, but it affects the CS-15 as well) at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1310892

That is, look at that other bug, and install the patch it suggests. This
gets the modem working and connecting the way you thought it would (well
it did for me anyway)

[Bug 405148] Re: Laptop battery indicator indicates 0% charge when fully charged

2009-12-05 Thread Brett
I'm having a similar issue. Only, it isn't 0%. The amount changes.
Lowest it has been was 62.3%. I thought this was odd, so decided to
test my battery using the built-in indicator that is on the battery
(Dell Inspiron 1720). The external test determined that my battery was
at 100%. Now, here is the odd part. Once I pressed that button on the
battery to see if the battery agreed with the battery indicator in
Gnome, the Gnome indicator changed to 100%. I was plugged into the wall
when this happened, so I'm not sure if it was an incredible fluke or if
pressing the button caused the battery to pass info onto the kernel (or
where ever the Gnome battery indicator gets its info from) that updated
the indicator.

Sorry for the double posting for the apport-collect info, I wasn't sure
if I needed to run the utility as my user account or root, so I did
both. The root account is the second one (comments #33 and 34).

[Bug 421276] Re: USB remote stops working

2009-11-30 Thread Brett
It is a hardware problem. I have experienced this on multiple
motherboards / ram sets - multiple computers and as seen from this bug
report, many people have this problem. Not sure what fixed it in your
scenario, maybe it is an incompatibility with a specific subset of
hardware, or maybe something totally different for you.

[Bug 421276] Re: USB remote stops working

2009-11-30 Thread Brett
The problem I am experiencing is not a delay -- it just simply stops
working, completely, which is why i believe it is a software problem
(for me at least). My HTPC is running a fairly new processor, quad
core, and 8gb ram, new mobo, etc. I'll have to try your fix, logging in
via ssh, and see if that helps. If it does, may be that could be a clue
to fixing the problem. Maybe a script that is triggered upon log in
fixes it.

I too am having this problem, although I can confirm that it is not a

stated, restarting lirc doesn't help, I must restart the computer in

[Bug 482698] [NEW] Proprietary nvidia drivers fail to set resolution size properly on geforce4 chipset

2009-11-14 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

This is the same computer in the bug
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-96/+bug/332048 except, but I am filing a new report because it
is now the 185 driver, not 96 and Ubuntu 9.10 instead of 8.10.

The display is 1024x768 when I know my LCD monitor can display 1280x1024
(I've been using it for years). Plus, the display was 1280x1024 when it
was using the free/open nvidia driver prior to the proprietary one.

So it seems that this problem is still not fixed. Now I know this is a
proprietary driver and you guys can not fix it, but I hope by reporting
it I'm helping make the developers aware of the problem...

[Bug 442078] Re: Buttons in Eclipse not working correctly with GTK+ 2.18.1-1

2009-11-13 Thread Brett Randall
Today I hit an issue that raises the severity for me - I've been running
with GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true happily, however today I wanted to launch
self-hosted Plugin Development Environment (PDE), where under-
development plugins are hosted in a new Workbench instance launched from
the original Eclipse Workbench.

I couldn't see immediately how to set GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true on the
target PDE runtime Workbench launched - the setting does _not_ propagate
automatically to the new process.

like to get a mentor to tackle this job.

Go go year-one CS students!

[Bug 182927] Re: Update FreeMind to 0.9.0 RC6

2009-11-09 Thread Brett Alton
Just letting people know that I've found packages for Freemind in the
following PPAs:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~khashayar/+archive/builder/+packages (latest is
0.9.0-rc4)
https://edge.launchpad.net/~igorgomes/+archive/ppa/+packages (latest is
0.9.0-rc6)
https://edge.launchpad.net/~liamgh/+archive/ppa/+packages (latest is 0.8.1)

Some of the owners of these PPAs are actually subscribed to this list...

I've love to help packaging this application, but I haven't heard a
reply from the motu-mentor list.

[Bug 209084] Re: debian/control must Recommends menu to run with elevated privileges in hardy

2009-11-02 Thread Brett Randall
Since we have kernel 2.6.26 or better, could we automatically run (on
Wireshark installation):

setcap cap_net_raw=+ep /usr/bin/dumpcap

? Allows capture as non-root, and seems better than a setuid root
solution.

2009-10-31 Thread Brett
Yeah, that is the exact same error I was getting, too. Right down to
the 0x820 error code. And it sorta fixed it. Just not completely.
Like I said, it took 1.5 hours for the connection to drop when I usually
only get a few seconds.

The u-code files from opensuse fixed this bug completely for me - weird that
 I'm apparently the exception...

 iwl4965-ucode
 iwl5000-ucode

 zypper info returns this (shortened)::

 Name: iwl4965-ucode
 Version: 228.57.2.23-1.1.1

I had a quick look in the README and LICENSE files which come with the
firmware, and it seems that redistribution is allowed as long as the binaries
are unchanged and the license files are attached (which I can easily provide,
or we can just get the rpm packages which include them as well). Here's an

Re: [Bug 200509] Re: iwl4965: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2009-10-29 Thread Brett
It is still the same SW error and, yes, I copied both files. Although,
all I need it the -2. It supersedes the -1. However, there is one
difference, my software error is a 0x820 error code, not the
0x200 in this bug report. Though, nobody has posted an 0x820
error code, so I was just hoping one would fix both problems.

Re: [Bug 200509] Re: iwl4965: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2009-10-29 Thread Brett
I just found another bug report on RedHat's website. It actually had my
exact error code:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=519154

Comment #10 suggests passing the option swcrypto=1 during module load.
So, I did as comment #11 suggested:

echo option swcrypto=1 /etc/modprobe.d/iwlagn.conf

So far, so good. No errors. I'll let ya'll know if that changes.

The easiest way to get this error was just start a torrent download that
oppens many connections, in about 1~2 seconds the error appears.

The good news is that after upgrade to 9.10 it apears no more. I managed
to complete a download and the connection is still up and running.

well, nevermind. Wireless just died. Sorry for the false alarm.
However, not a complete let down. My connection lasted for about an
hour and a half. Usually I only get seconds before it goes down. Maybe
that swcrypto=1 is a clue to the problem.

If this is the exact command you typed, then this was a complete no-op. You
must also specify the module name as part of the 'option' command in
 /etc/modprobe.d config files.

I just read on ctan.org that template and xparse are part of the xbase
bundle, which itself seems to be part of the xpackages bundle. The
xpackages bundle in turn requires the expl3 bundle. FWIW, I just
installed the expl3 and xpackages bundles into my own ~/texmf/tex/latex

[Bug 454821] [NEW] After laptop lid is closed and told to 'blank screen', mouse disappears and needs reboot to be fixed

2009-10-18 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

On an HP Pavillion 6042ca laptop, with the power cord plugged in, my
mouse disappears after closing the laptop lid.

I checked the Power settings and it says that on AC power, the computer
is supposed to blank the screen. If I wait about 10 seconds or so, the
mouse is still there. However if I let the computer sit for more than a
minute and open the laptop lid, the mouse pointer disappears. The
pointer is still there and working, but the pointer graphic has
disappeared and it makes it impossible to use the computer.

I hope most of the details were uploaded in '$ ubuntu-bug xorg' but I
have nVidia graphics on my laptop, without the proprietary plugin
enabled.

I installed 9.04 fresh and then upgrade to 9.10 around 2009-10-10

[Bug 325973] Re: gnome-session keeps respawning nautilus when no desktop is drawed

2009-10-12 Thread Brett Johnson
I agree with Chris that a proper fix ought to be committed, rather than
just another workaround. If nobody cares about the show_desktop
option enough to fix it, maybe it should just be disabled (i.e. remove
the gconf key, and just always show the desktop). Personally, losing
this option would annoy me enough to make me finally dump the GNOME
desktop altogether, but it's at least a solution, and it's better than
just continuing to ship a broken Nautilus. The option is certainly
useless in its currently broken state, so just disabling it shouldn't be
much of a leap.

[Bug 325973] Re: gnome-session keeps respawning nautilus when no desktop is drawed

2009-10-12 Thread Brett Johnson
@Sebastien: Ooh, excellent idea. Here's my story ;)

I don't want nautilus to draw the desktop because it doesn't give me a
useful desktop context menu, or even any way to create a useful desktop
context menu. And if it's drawing the desktop, it won't allow any other
software to give me a desktop menu. So I just turn show_desktop off,
and run xfdesktop instead (which gives me a context menu I can customize
any way I want). I don't particularly care if Nautilus is running or
not, as long as it's not sucking up too many resources. I just want a
desktop menu I can control/customize.

[Bug 447122] Re: Unable to install any application in 9.10 Beta

Perhaps a problem with that mirror?

The package is indeed missing from the IN mirror.

Changing mirrors is a workaround while someone looks at this mirror.

[Bug 447122] Re: Unable to install any application in 9.10 Beta

2009-10-09 Thread Brett Sheffield
Hi Sriram,

Open /etc/apt/sources.list in an editor. You'll see a bunch of lines
beginning with

deb http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/

deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/

or

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/

Hope this helps.

[Bug 447122] Re: Unable to install any application in 9.10 Beta

2009-10-09 Thread Brett Sheffield
Whoops. That should have said change this to

deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/

or

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/

I've subscribed the Ubuntu Mirror Admin to this bug as I think they can
take it from here. /ubuntu/ appears to be completely absent from the
Indian mirror.

Cheers,

Brett
