I've gone as far as cutting a section of pipe in half lengthwise, welding the
top half from inside, then welding the bottom half from the outside, then
welding back over the cut - to avoid having to remove things.

I scored an Ingersoll-Rand G25 (with autostart capability). It looks to use a
Mitsubishi S4Q series engine that uses what looks to be a Bosch type "A" inline

BTW I didn't heat the bolt, I heated the casting the bolt goes into. I

You can probably borrow an exhaust pipe expander from your FLAPS. Expand
till it fits snug and put a clamp on it. Should be expanded before welding
or it will just break at the weld.
