I have two 11.10 ubuntu's running in parallel. In one (the newer, fresh one)
the login-in sound works fine and all sound files are placed in
/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo.

Ok, so weird data point, I tried swapping alt/win back to default, and
that did not fix it. But then I logged out/back in, and the behavior
went away.
I have been having odd race issues with X not working at bootup with my
keyboard/trackpad... I wonder if this is part of it.

In most cases we don't have a useful networked source of such files.
The desktop installer mostly works by copying a pre-constructed
filesystem, not by unpacking .debs, so we can't just use
archive.ubuntu.com. So I doubt that this is implementable without a
huge amount of infrastructure work - sor
The fakeraid signatures are located at the end of the disk and can be
removed safely since you are not using them. You should do so before
they cause any more problems. If the disk has a fakeraid signature on
it, it is an error to use it outside of dmraid.
