Command+n for new works fine.

Then qickly press the letter r.
The sequence space+dots7,1 then the letter n works for new emails, text
messages, and calendar events.
I think it also works in Notes.

So I used the double tap and hold labeling gesture you suggested and it worked
perfectly. This is going to make selecting the correct bluetooth device to
connect too so much easier. Before I had to guess and often had to go through
three attempted connects before finding the right device.
