Well every time I mention a hip-hop/RB CD here Carl Craig ends up charting
it or playing it, so... ;)
I think that 'chipmunk' thing came from RZA distorting samples, I like it,
but there's none of that on West productions like You Don't Know My Name by
A Keys (a Theo Parrish fave incidentally) or Encore by Jay-Z, etc. The album
is superb.

 i gotta debate you there.
i haven't heard the whole album but..
kayne west is responsible for the whole chipmunk sample crazy- easily the
worst thing to EVER happen to pop music.

now if anyone doesn't mind- i could easily start a thread regardi hip=hip

youre definitely crazy on that one. i think its great. you can
look at how UK hardcore took stuff from hiphop, usually speeding
it up, and how now hiphop is taking divas and speeding them up,
almost in homage to UK hardcore.

i seriously doubt kayne west is up on UK hardcore

i'm sorry- but chipmunking out chaka chan and freaking Annie (from back in
his Jay-Z producing days) is a flippin scourge of music and culture.

plus, andres does that stuff all
the time, and i thought it sounded good when he did it.

Let's do it - it's just as 'on topic' as some of the other stuff people want
to discuss.

Futuristic hip-hop I'm appreciating at the moment:

*Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain

OK, I have just discovered that this is in fact -MF Doom! No wonder I like
it so much.

Muffled 303 and 808s, unashamed synthiness and a love of eschewing the
obvious, make this something I'd recommend to this list. One small patch of
dubious lyrical content but mostly it's sound.

You might also want to check out Madlib and MF Doom's Madvillain project. LP
is due in a few days:

http://www.stonesthrow.com/madvillain/

I heard an EP of a collaboration of Doom Lib a few weeks ago - *on
Bluenote* (but I'd totalled my record allowance so didn't buy). That was
also very good. Sorry the name escapes me. Check here:

http://www.bluenote.com/artistpage.asp?ArtistID=3718tab=1

*Mr Lif - I Phantom. This is now quite old (2002?) Emile recently turned me
on to it. It's brilliant. A lot of the same qualities as MFD but a lot more
aware lyrically and I think more club-friendly too.

*Boom Bip - Seed To Sun - again I'm late on this. Mostly good. But some
noodly and indie-sounding moments which is not for me. Mostly very painterly
with shades of dementia. And I do regard it as hip-hop. Mostly!

*Masterminds - Subliminal EP. With Mr Lif 'No Test Redux'. Again I'm so late
with this (it's from 2001) - but then again, I think many copies have been
loitering in vaults for the last three years as the shop said they'd never
seen them till now.

- 'Subliminal' is filtered rock-riff hip-hop before OutKast and it's highly,
highly recommended. 'No Test Redux' is a avant-downbeat loop to lose track
of time to. Sweetly put together.

come to opposite conclusions about it. I'd be interested to know more about
WHY you think it's cheesy and/or cheap, and not in a confrontational way at
all! These questions are very interesting to me.

Thanks,

Well every time I mention a hip-hop/RB CD here Carl Craig ends
up
charting
it or playing it, so... ;) I think that 'chipmunk' thing came
from
RZA
distorting samples, I like it, but there's none of that on West
productions
like You Don't Know My Name by A Keys (a Theo Parrish fave
incidentally) or
Encore by Jay-Z, etc. The album is superb.

 i gotta debate you there.
i haven't heard the whole album but..
kayne west is responsible for the whole chipmunk sample crazy-
easily
the worst thing to EVER happen to pop music.

now if anyone doesn't mind- i could easily start a thread
regardi
hip=hip that i've recently discovered. stuff that probably has
more in
common with carl craig than public enemy

 anyone?

Blackwater is hideously over-played, though.

I think there's still some mileage in the excellent remixes Ryan.

My favourites: 'Terrence Parker's Wave Brush Edit' (or something like that)
and the Alter Ego mix.

I'm not really up on RB, but heard a track on a flight recently by a
London based female artist called Maya (sp?) or something.
Anyone heard of her?
The track was sh*t hot!

(313) Techno's Voice (WAS - RE: (313) what's your favorite track/album right now?)

2004-03-10 Thread Andrew
So anyway, back to the discussion - does anyone think there is common ground
in the feelings evoked by what I call 'soul' music and techno? There are
obviously excellent examples of this in techno (the Relics EP by Abacus
immediately springs to mind). Without degenrating into the old soul vs.
machine 'debate', is there more to the fact that these separate styles
exist, in that they express different emotions or feelings? A lot of techno
is basically saying 'Come the f*ck on!', and all the better for it. Is it
merely the distinction between lyric-laden music and 'tracks'?

I guess what's on my mind is - what the f*ck is techno music SAYING??

Hope this is a suitable question,

Andrew

2004-03-10 Thread Robert Taylor
The only conclusions I can draw from this kind of debate is that our language
is inadequate for describing music. Both Soul and Techno are inadequate labels
because the words have emotionally/culturally loaded meanings, whereas the
music just is - a techno track might inspire a similar emotion as a soul song
but why is in the realms of musicology, which takes me way out my depth.

RE: (313) what's your favorite track/album right now?/HIP HOP

2004-03-10 Thread jurren baars

thanks ken for the info, i'll keep my eyes out for those releases.

two things i've heard recently [both 313 related] are the lacksydaisycal
album, which was nice, reminding a bit of common on one or two songs, and
jaydee has a hand in it aswell. some very nice tunes, but not the best
hiphop album ever. worth to check if you like sv, j-dilla, common.

another one is the jimmy edgar 12 on warp, as it was mentioned on
littledetroit. after reading the description on the site, i had high hopes,
but to my ears only the third track came close to achieving some of the
praise it had been given. should probably listen to it once more.

also saw a jaydee produced phat kat release on house shoe records (?) from
detroit on the rushhour mailout. if i'm not mistaken this is the last track
that was on the 2000demf mix by dego that used to be up on groovetech.
anyone know more about phat kat/house shoe? i've got a remix by dwele that
also features phat kat, so i assume he's done loads of things allready,
anything i should keep an eye out for?

http://www.bling47.com for more detroit hiphop.

is my ban from 313 gone yet?

My current fave is a rediscovered oldie out of the RZA´s magic hat, Shyheims

the stuff that´s going on in a beat but this one remains a mystery...
also on rotation is Missy´s Wake up from the last album which is incredible.
Picture Eric B and Rakim´s Microphone fiend brake in outer space. Neptunes did
it again, they may not be very original but they are d**m good.

Another slammer for me is track by Elephant man with the T.O.K posse, pure
blade runner dance hall
Elephanti has been occupiing my decks a lot lately anyway, next to Baby Cham
and the lot from Greensleeves
ruff´n´ready!!!

thanks ken for the info, i'll keep my eyes out for those releases.

two things i've heard recently [both 313 related] are the lacksydaisycal
album, which was nice, reminding a bit of common on one or two songs, and
jaydee has a hand in it aswell. some very nice tunes, but not the best
hiphop album ever. worth to check if you like sv, j-dilla, common.

another one is the jimmy edgar 12 on warp, as it was mentioned on
littledetroit. after reading the description on the site, i had high hopes,
but to my ears only the third track came close to achieving some of the
praise it had been given. should probably listen to it once more.

also saw a jaydee produced phat kat release on house shoe records (?) from
detroit on the rushhour mailout. if i'm not mistaken this is the last track
that was on the 2000demf mix by dego that used to be up on groovetech.
anyone know more about phat kat/house shoe? i've got a remix by dwele that
also features phat kat, so i assume he's done loads of things allready,
anything i should keep an eye out for?

Yeah, this is my favourite cut on the album for sure - Jay-Z manages to
rhyme 'David Beckham' with 'rectum' which is always a bonus :)

The only conclusions I can draw from this kind of debate is that our
language is inadequate for describing music. Both Soul and Techno are
inadequate labels because the words have emotionally/culturally loaded
meanings, whereas the music just is - a techno track might inspire a similar
emotion as a soul song but why is in the realms of musicology, which takes
me way out my depth.

Yeah, me too! But it's certainly interesting, when thinking about what makes
a certain track do it for you. There can be the scientific angle of 'wow,
amazing sound design and production', or the pure energy of a dirty, jackin,
lo-fi Chicago track, or the aspirational, uplifting melodies of the classic
Detroit techno number. It's interesting when thinking about new stuff, like,
what is it doing that hasn't been done before? What is it expressing? It
could be that it's slightly more transparent in vocalised music, also more
directed as you say.

Wow, what a thought - music describing music!

on the phat kat front - check Phat Kat aka Ronnie Cash - Dedication

a handy Detroit Road Map on the cover...

Other synthy hip hop:

Def Harmonic on Altered Vibes, some very technoey synth moments on
their stuff - deeply pleasing, the track 'Doing The Best I Can' is
great, though some of their other tracks are marred by weak MCing in
places. Altered Vibes is part of the Goya stable as far as I know,
but these people sound American, anyone know where they're from?

Blockhead also deserve an honourable mention in this category. Anyone
else heard the new Pete Rock import on Up Above? - b-side is lurvely.

P.S. Before anyone asks, Pete Rock is Richie Hawtin's evil twin,
Blockhead is the secret UK downtempo project of Eddie Fowlkes and Def
Harmonic use old transmat CDs as beer coasters, so ner!

The Danny Breaks releases on Alphabet Zoo are also well worth checking -
'The Jellyfish' from his 'Another Dimension' release kicks off the 20.02.04

Dabrye/Prefuse 73 kinda mould...

Here's some links:

And Rob, yes it's Mark Pritchard of Reload/GlobComm etc fame - doing much
better solo work than Tom Middleton these days IMHO :)

There was a Harmonic33 12 on Alphabet Zoo called 'Kaleidoscopic
Sounds EP', the first release on the label in fact, and yes it is
indeed Mark Pritchard of Global Comms/Jedi Knights etc fame. I'm
reliably informed that he is a massive hip hop head. I believe that
Alphabet Zoo is Danny Breaks' label (for all you old Junglists out
there).

Wonderful 12 if you ever come across it, deep late night hip hop
instrumentals in a crisp Primo/Spinna/Pete Rock style (and that isn't
an idle comparison).

Erm, let me think, ah yes, Mark Pritchard has a picture of Mad Mike
tattoed on his left buttock and Danny Breaks is Juan Atkins'
Uncle.

as far as techno, i'm pretty into the new Damon Wild doublepack on
Kanzleramt. especially mr mean and halflife. the combo of tough
stompy drums and totally wussed out synths is, in general, pretty
unbeatable, imo.

as far as rock music, i'd always have to go with Lungfish and the Lungfish
side-project The Pupils on Dischord. if you want to give them a shot, i
think i'd recommend starting with Lungfish's Sound in Time, completely
amazing start to finish.

not that i necessarily think you've never heard these records, but those
are the things i'm into right now.

also, i'd agree with Chad about Stars of the Lid. droning, largely guitar
based, i think, ambient. and the show they played in urbana last year was
one of the best i've seen. which i think is saying a lot, considering i'm
an impatient guy and it was an ambient show.

Jonas Berring's Emballages EP on Kompakt is a nice variation on Deepchord
sort of stuff; also worth picking up in that vein are releases on Force Tracks
and a fair few on Gadgets as well.

An EP that came out a couple of months ago that's worth chasing down is Paul St

out on False Tuned records, and if you like the sounds on Deepchord releases

Deepchord is a Detroit label I think (so it is 313 ;-) - I found their
first one about 5 years ago now, so they've been around a pretty long time,
but they are really against any kind of promotion, so their EPs tend to
filter into the stores pretty subtly. Excellent stuff though, kinda Basic
Channel'y with a slightly smoother edge...

Not sure if it's all the same artist, as there is minimal info on the one's
I've got, but it's certainly a consistent sound across all the cuts...

2004-03-09 Thread Brendan Nelson
I *think* Deepchord are actually from Detroit so we may be able to
get another few emails on this topic through before the Feds bust in
and shut down the thread!

Deepchord aren't a BC sublabel but it's safe to say that their
music is _heavily_ influenced by Basic Channel and Chain Reaction.
That's not a criticism; I like that style of music, feel that the
world has room in it for a few more records like that, and the
Deepchord people do it well. I regularly use Deepchord tracks when
doing dubby BC-style mixes (and used quite a lot on Offworld Party
Time as well) but apart from the suspicion that they're 313 natives
I don't know much about them at all.

God, I hope it doesn't turn out that they're actually from Flint,
Ypsilanti, Windsor or Dearborn...

Jonas Berring's Emballages EP on Kompakt is a nice
variation on Deepchord sort of stuff; also worth picking up
in that vein are releases on Force Tracks and a fair few on
 Gadgets as well.

An EP that came out a couple of months ago that's worth
chasing down is Paul St Hilaire (aka Tikiman) ft Rene Lowe
(aka Scion). It's called the Faith EP and is out on False
Tuned records, and if you like the sounds on Deepchord
releases and haven't heard this one you should definitely try
 to track it down.

Then again, you probably know all this stuff already :)

Yeah, Beautification is an amazing track, can't wait to drop that one soon.
Other stuff he has done, of significance (to me) was Sunstone, also on PF.
Lush deep tech, really atmospheric.
I am also quite fond of his track Blue - much more straight up but still
very good on Ian Pooleys Strive label.

(313) Do You Know Who You Are (was RE: (313) what's your favorite track/album right now?)

2004-03-09 Thread Brendan Nelson
Here's another track that I love right now - Virgo, Do
You Know Who You Are.

It's not from Detroit so I get a slap for mentioning it;
however, to me it's a very good example of late-80s Chicago
music that almost could have been made in Detroit during
that period. I remember a discussion on here some time ago
about exactly what differentiated the electronic dance music
output of Detroit and Chicago (essentially, what differentiated
techno from house) and this track definitely backs up the
opinion that there was a lot of music being made in Chicago
then that could have been mistaken for Detroit techno, just
as some producers in Detroit were being heavily influenced
by Chicago house.

The synth strings on Do You Know Who You Are sound
classically Detroit to me, with that brittle emotion and
the combination of warmth and coldness that is characteristic
of the feel of early 313 techno. What other old Chicago tracks
can people think of that bridge the Detroit/Chicago gap as
effectively as this Virgo track does?

It's not techno/house but I am totally enamoured with the Kanye West album
The College Dropout - esp Never Let Me Down and Jesus Walks.
The production is excellent - he's developed the Blueprint template - and
the lyrics insightful, astute and candid.

as far as techno, i'm pretty into the new Damon Wild doublepack on
Kanzleramt. especially mr mean and halflife. the combo of tough
stompy drums and totally wussed out synths is, in general, pretty
 unbeatable, imo.

as far as rock music, i'd always have to go with Lungfish and the Lungfish
side-project The Pupils on Dischord. if you want to give them a shot, i
think i'd recommend starting with Lungfish's Sound in Time, completely
 amazing start to finish.

not that i necessarily think you've never heard these records, but those
are the things i'm into right now.

also, i'd agree with Chad about Stars of the Lid. droning, largely guitar
based, i think, ambient. and the show they played in urbana last year was
one of the best i've seen. which i think is saying a lot, considering i'm
an impatient guy and it was an ambient show.

so has Do You Know Who You Are been repressed recently or summink?

Not as far as I know - I managed to get hold of it a few months
ago though, and have been giving it some heavy listens lately.

I've got to hunt down this Farm Boy record that Alex mentioned -
never come across that one before!

Another Chicago track I'd suggest as something to bridge the gap
is Essence Of A Dream by K-Alexi - very Detroit strings on that
one, and the TR-727 Latin Module drum machine on there is definitely
more of a Detroit sound than a Chicago sound.

Man, I forgot about this - does anyone remember the 'Air' LP on Rising High,
by Pete Namlook? I re-found it the other day and it must be some of the most
beautiful music ever! Would love to know more about his output on Fax,
there's so much of it, there must be some gems in amongst everything else.
Maybe he went off the new-age deep end, I really don't know.

Anyway, if anyone out there hasn't heard it, get Air 1, you won't regret it

It's not techno/house but I am totally enamoured with the Kanye West album
The College Dropout - esp Never Let Me Down and Jesus Walks. The production
is excellent - he's developed the Blueprint template - and the lyrics
insightful, astute and candid.

as far as techno, i'm pretty into the new Damon Wild doublepack on
Kanzleramt. especially mr mean and halflife. the combo of tough
stompy drums and totally wussed out synths is, in general, pretty
 unbeatable, imo.

as far as rock music, i'd always have to go with Lungfish and the
Lungfish side-project The Pupils on Dischord. if you want to give them
a shot, i think i'd recommend starting with Lungfish's Sound in
Time, completely amazing start to finish.

not that i necessarily think you've never heard these records, but
those are the things i'm into right now.

also, i'd agree with Chad about Stars of the Lid. droning, largely
guitar based, i think, ambient. and the show they played in urbana
last year was one of the best i've seen. which i think is saying a
lot, considering i'm an impatient guy and it was an ambient show.

From Within came in 2 volumes.
Silence with Dr Atmo is another good one.
He also did some interesting stuff with Atom Heart, and with Tetsue Inuo (sp?).
He was very prolific and subsequently his quality control was almost
non-existent - some of his releases seemed to consist of just one tone played
on a dusty old analogue synth for 60 minutes

Can anyone suggest good 313 ambient?

i could be wrong but i thought deepchord were based out of boston.
i like a lot of deepchord stuff, but i wouldnt put it on the same level as
bc/cr/etc because they are seriously lacking in the bassline department --
great dubby chords and nice beats, but missing lowend...many releases have
no basslines at all. altho i guess that doesnt hurt them in the mix

Jonas Berring's Emballages EP on Kompakt is a nice variation on Deepchord
sort of stuff; also worth picking up in that vein are releases on Force
Tracks and a fair few on Gadgets as well.

An EP that came out a couple of months ago that's worth chasing down is
Paul

St Hilaire (aka Tikiman) ft Rene Lowe (aka Scion). It's called the Faith EP
and is out on False Tuned records, and if you like the sounds on Deepchord
releases and haven't heard this one you should definitely try to track it
down.

Then again, you probably know all this stuff already :)

Yes i was going to say dreamfish- an old favourite of mine, even if some of
those sounds used were abused by nameless commercial offerings elsewhere and
later.

My all-time favourite FAX release is orange by Atom Heart.

Also Fire's of Orc which is on Apollo I think co authored by Biosphere on
rs sublabel its still nice.

On that subject of Apollo does anyone know where i can get a copy of Model
500 - the passage on vinyl? I heard it on an old mix tape recorded from
Claude Young when he lived in Adelaide, and its been bugging me ever since.
Timeless peace or ambient.

I heard it on an old mix tape recorded from
Claude Young when he lived in Adelaide, and its been bugging me ever since.

incidentally, Juan's new track Track 10 reminds me of The Passage quite
a bit, you can hear it on Matt Macqueens show. www.sonicsunset.com

It's not techno/house but I am totally enamoured with the Kanye West album
The College Dropout - esp Never Let Me Down and Jesus Walks.
The production is excellent - he's developed the Blueprint template - and
the lyrics insightful, astute and candid.

as far as techno, i'm pretty into the new Damon Wild doublepack on
Kanzleramt. especially mr mean and halflife. the combo of tough
stompy drums and totally wussed out synths is, in general, pretty
 unbeatable, imo.

as far as rock music, i'd always have to go with Lungfish and the
Lungfish

side-project The Pupils on Dischord. if you want to give them a shot, i
think i'd recommend starting with Lungfish's Sound in Time, completely
 amazing start to finish.

not that i necessarily think you've never heard these records, but those

also, i'd agree with Chad about Stars of the Lid. droning, largely

one of the best i've seen. which i think is saying a lot, considering

Actually, on the Detroit ambient tip: remember the Random Logic one on The
Black Label all those years ago? By Robert Hood? The inner track on one of
those sides is a really exquisite piece of Detroit ambient, with the 909 in
there too, of course. Oh, and on the same tip I have to shout the
Netherlands EP by Joe Louis, I can't believe this record isn't more well
known!! The track Netherlands even appeared on some comps (according to
Discogs), which attests to it's beauty. That's some lovely 313 ambient.

Here's another track that I love right now - Virgo, Do
 You Know Who You Are.

 It's not from Detroit so I get a slap for mentioning it;
however, to me it's a very good example of late-80s Chicago
music that almost could have been made in Detroit during
that period.

What other old Chicago tracks
can people think of that bridge the Detroit/Chicago gap as
effectively as this Virgo track does?

youre definitely crazy on that one. i think its great. you can
look at how UK hardcore took stuff from hiphop, usually speeding
it up, and how now hiphop is taking divas and speeding them up,
almost in homage to UK hardcore. plus, andres does that stuff all
the time, and i thought it sounded good when he did it.

I'd never heard David Alvarado before, but really liked the two
tracks on that comp that he is involved in ('Beautification'
literally dropped my jaw the first time I heard it). Can anyone
recommend any other tracks by him?

I thought the David Alvardo album on Peacefrog was beautifully produced but
utterly vapid. It didn't hold a candle to his earlier Peacefrog 12 or some
of his other work IMHO. Other than the stuff already mentioned, I'd highly
recommend his 12s on Plastic City and Yoshi Toshi, both of which tap into a
BCish territory.

God, I hope it doesn't turn out that they're actually from Flint,
Ypsilanti, Windsor or Dearborn...

i seriously doubt kayne west is up on UK hardcore

i'm sorry- but chipmunking out chaka chan and freaking Annie (from back in
his Jay-Z producing days) is a flippin scourge of music and culture.

whys that? i wouldnt immediately assume that about anyone,
especially not when timbaland is obviously indebted to the same
things.

didnt mark the 45 king do the hard knock life beat? thats what
it says on allmusic as well, either way, i dont see why pitching
up vocals is suddenly a crime. i think one of the vocals andres
did that with was barbara streisand. if it sounds hot, do it. ive
been interested in slowing things down recently though. that whole
down south screwed up sound where they pitch things down and the
relatively slow detroit house sounds are much more cutting edge
IMO, even though theyre hardly new.

haha what?? yes all trends suck! err something. the worst thing ever to
happen to pop music? easily? were you asleep in the late 90's? executive
produced supergroups are easily the worst thing to ever happen to pop music,
get real.

i like kanye west. it's nothing amazing. just very good mainstream style
hiphop. i dont think he's hiphop's saviour or any sht like that, as a lot
of media hype is making him out to be (they do this every 6 months or so
right? such n such is totally re-ineventing insert genre here..or oh wow,
rap music can actually be intelligent! o really??)

give me jaydee stuff over kanye west any day of the week.

now if anyone doesn't mind- i could easily start a thread regardi hip=hip
that i've recently discovered. stuff that probably has more in common with
carl craig than public enemy

lay it on us
tho i'd be awfully excited to hear any hiphop that had anything in common
with p.e. too

there is a vast raft of string laden chicago tracks. it's classic chicago
to me, rather than bridging a gap between chicago and detroit.
lot of stuff by da posse
all the virgo stuff by marshall jefferson - particularly the jungle
ron trent altered states
the house rockers everybody do it
ace and the sandman 'let your body talk'
larry heard 'can u feel it'

The synth strings on Do You Know Who You Are sound
classically Detroit to me, with that brittle emotion and
the combination of warmth and coldness that is characteristic
of the feel of early 313 techno. What other old Chicago tracks
can people think of that bridge the Detroit/Chicago gap as
effectively as this Virgo track does?

well there's tons of old ones i guess, with virgo and k-alexi being
consistently that style, and of course mr fingers.

sendex has recently been making tracks that hark back to this sound too,
reallly nice. he posted one on the c-b-s forum
http://www.smeyer.cistron.nl/~smeyer/music/sendex_temp01.mp3 ..wait what
year is it? he'll be on a usa tour in early april, in detroit saturday the
10th
