Hi Rob,

I'm in the space now and having a wee look, things inline.

The Optoma EX530 is here. We have a webcam attached to the media
workstation that can be used, and a shure C606 into the 2 channel
behringer desk attached to the same workstation. I can bring another
webcam in, at the very least.

"Media workstation" has OBS, but not very configured.

We're lacking any large areas of wall to point a projector at. There's a ~40"
screen by the sofas that might be a good starter?

Yeah this is a great idea.

Can we arrange the space in a way that would be more conducive to the group's
meetup, or provide any services/hardware (I see you mention zoom) that would
make it better?

[57north-discuss] Mate time!

2021-09-14 Thread Dave Hibberd
Howdy y'all,

We're pretty much out of mate, so i guess as the purse holder I should pick up
another few boxes.

Is anyone interested in piggybacking on this to get a personal box for home? If
so I'll look at costs and send back a quote!

irl has kindly offered the sr2 office as a delivery location adjacent to the
space.

Do we want anything else in the hacklab shop?
Snacks? Water? Coke-and-Cola? Ironed Brew? Corned Flakes?

[57north-discuss] New Server Time!

As it's the release of Debian 11, instead of upgrading Garioch[1] from Debian

Ythan will initially host the website, the wiki, our email aliases and the

Is there anything else that should be on this server?

[57north-discuss] CampGNDd 28-29 May - This Weekend!

2021-05-25 Thread Dave Hibberd
This weekend we're running the virtual version of our annual tiny hackercamp,
campGNDd.

Last years event was a great break from the lockdown and this year promises to
be a good giggle too.

We're running Friday evening and all day Saturday.

There will be live cooking, technical presentations, 4 DJs playing great music.

We run mostly on Zoom, with the talks streamed to youtube and breakout sessions
hosted after each talk for conversation and query!

By night, we'll drink, party dance and catch up with old friends. we're happy
to offer private breakouts if you want to talk more in depth about things, plan
projects or get excited over nothing and everything with new friends!

Tickets are pay what you want with a minimum £1, and all proceeds go towards
developing our in person events - campGND proper and NorthernRST in December!

The website is here: https://campgnd.com

Once again it's bandcamp Friday[1], the day where bandcamp waives their fees

My picks are:

Randolph's leap, bright and cheery indie-pop band from Glasgow have a new album:

Re: [57north-discuss] Hackerspace virtual activities

2021-01-26 Thread Dave Hibberd
Hey Nerds.

Let's play some games on Friday.

I suggest Among Us[1] (Windows/Wine [steam/epic/msft store], iOS, Android) on
Friday to sow the seeds of distrust amongst the community. It's cheap (<£5)
and after a simple explanation and attempt, you might even get the hang of it.

If anyone has any jackbox[2] games we can drink and be stupid. They're akin to
TV gameshows - watch the stream, participate with phone/tablet/PC and trash
talk each other. This can easy happen on Friday too, I have pack #3. It gets
better the more you drink and has memetastic ads.[4]

Also, in more "niche appeal", online multiplayer OpenTTD[3], and build some
ridiculous train networks or something. This will need setting up a server

Re: [57north-discuss] 3D-printed Spring roll-maker

2020-12-10 Thread Dave Hibberd
Of course!

Surprisingly on this one, the wiki is actually reasonably up to date, and also
has links to the vendors guides!

https://wiki.57north.org.uk/doku.php?id=projects:3d_printer#how_to_3d_print_an_stl

Because of the filament being a bit old, it absolutely needs to be replaced
beforehand
https://wiki.57north.org.uk/doku.php?id=projects:3d_printer#replacing_the_3d_filament

Alternatively, you may just wish to replace it with a different colour, as you
might not want a lime green box! I recommend bringing the STL on a USB stick,
the internet at the moment is questionable at best!

I can be around to assist, if you wish. I'll probably add some more detail to
the wiki at some point. Alternatively, I can just do it if you'd rather!

[57north-discuss] BBQ & Radio on Saturday 5th

2020-09-02 Thread Dave Hibberd
Hey all,

We're thinking about going to the fields behind the hacklab
(https://osm.org/go/e6k7rkgSl--?m= or https://osm.org/go/e6k7rGGRw--?m=) on
Saturday afternoon, playing with radios on the HF bands and maybe having a
socially distanced BBQ and a few beers.

We'll need to take some bricks/wood to keep the BBQs off the grass (unless
anyone is going to volunteer a coal fired / off ground model). I also recommend
bringing a camping chair as sitting on Grass isn't so much fun.

Weather looks good, currently, so it should be a fun afternoon of talking to
strangers around the country and talking to friends in a field.

If you want to come along, give a shout here or in IRC so I've got a vague
handle on numbers.

[57north-discuss] campGNDd, May 29-31

2020-05-10 Thread Dave Hibberd
Do you feel a strong desire to sit in a field and do the same things you do at
home but in a field with your pals?

So do we, but this year we've been campGNDd to protect lives. Let's do the same
things at home that we want to do in a field with our pals that we'd normally
do at home.

campGNDd will run May 29th, 30th and 31st, this time we will be virtual.

Normally we are limited by capacity at the camp site, but this year we are only
limited by our dreams. As a departure from our normal event we are having
talks, walk throughs and music

We're looking for submissions on anything you're enthusiastic and excited
about. If you enjoy it, the odds are we will too! You don't need to be an
expert to propose anything. Submit early and submit often!

The CFP is open and the tickets are on sale - all the important information is
available on https://campgnd.com.

If you've got any questions, drop us an email or ask in irc!

Re: [57north-discuss] wiki.57north.org.uk Migration

2020-04-10 Thread Dave Hibberd
Hi all,

To nip this before it becomes a disagreement,

irl and I had previously talked about this, but I am reluctant to add more
services to finzean & garioch until I/someone else has migrated them to a new
platform - I'm not happy with the age of them, and I've been talking about
auditing and migrating things with better documentation for some time. There is
some work on this on what is now oldwiki, but I keep ending up busy before I
can get any real motion on the project.

My big fear is understanding enough of the openLDAP to migrate that, and
migrating the mailing lists - I suspect if we're moving them it's worth
migrating to the .org.uk address too, but I don't know enough about mailman as
it stands to a) competently migrate them and b) change the addresses on them
without breaking everything.

Hopefully once work starts kicking my ass this is something that can happen,
until then I'm happy to have working services that are better documented and
more portable.

Re: [57north-discuss] hack and tell tonight?

2020-04-07 Thread Dave Hibberd
Hey there,

Sorry - you are correct it's tonight, I'm just bad at dates today it seems!

Hopefully this works for irc, no guarantees - irc can be a bit finnicky
sometimes:

irc://holmes.freenode.net/#57N

if you have a client, you want to connect to server chat.freenode.net and once
you're connected, try to issue the command /join #57N or find a way to join the
#57n channel.

Freenode has a web client that asks for this up front:
https://webchat.freenode.net/

To join us on hack & tell later, download mumble and connect to
mumble.milliways.info - make sure you run the audio wizard, and be sure to set
up Push to talk (PTT) - it avoids us hearing you eat or similar!

Cheers,
H

I should be in, doing things, stuff and potentially something.

I've got some new NVIDIA patches to test for the linux kernel, but I left the
relevant machine at home and off so I might head early to `make -j8`. Failing
that I'll be reading the code and working out what it does (clockgating and

[57north-announce] Open Tuesday - October 10

2017-10-10 Thread Dave Hibberd
Howdy Partner,

It's 10/10, a date that Americans and Brits can finally agree on
(ignoring the wonderful ISO8601, as most of the population does).

It is also Open Tuesday at 57North! All are welcome to come along this
evening after about 7pm.

For those of you not in the know, Tuesday evenings are open to anyone
who wishes to come to 57North, Aberdeen's Hackerspace[1]! We get up to a
range of activities on Tuesday nights, including but not limited to
social contact, programming, manufacturing weird things and consuming
sugary treats.
We usually begin at about 7, but sometimes someone will be in earlier.
If you're unsure, ask in IRC[2]!

If you're new, I'd suggest you bring a laptop, and perhaps a project you
want to work on.

If you're coming in, feel free to reply and tell us all what you're
planning to do!

I shall be in for about 7ish after trying out my new travel schedule.

Following that, either python, info-beamer, python and infobeamer or
neither.

[57north-announce] 57North Gamejam 2017

2017-09-28 Thread Dave Hibberd
Good day nerds!

On the weekend of the 20th, 21st and 22nd of October, we shall be
hosting the first 57North Game Jam!

What's a game jam? It's a get together of people to make games! You turn
up and create something that you'd enjoy playing. Learn more here[1].

What kind of games? Any! Board/Video/Card/Crypto/Blockchain/whatever!
Just because some of us will be programming doesn't mean you need to do
the same. They can be silly, serious, important, easy or difficult.

Who can take part? Anyone, but we ask that non members of 57N make a
donation to the hackerspace. You are welcome to bring friends and team
up, or create something on your own. Throw your name on the wiki and/or
reply here.

What does my game have to be about? At the moment, we don't have a set
topic to base games on - feel free to suggest one, or to suggest that we
shouldn't have a topic at all!

Where is it taking part? We will be based at 57North Hacklab, 35a Union
Street, Aberdeen. However, you are not obliged to spend the whole time
in the hackerspace with us. We assume you'd like to sleep, eat and maybe
work from a comfortable room for a few hours or a whole day.

Events will kick off at around 1800 on Friday, however if it's
impossible to make it in for then, don't worry, just turn up late.
We shall be finishing off at around 1500 on Sunday with a show && tell
session so you can reveal and explain your creation!

Want to know more? Check out the 57N wiki:
https://wiki.57north.org.uk/index.php/Event:Gamejam_2017

Stay Awesome,

Godmorning

It's Tuesday, and we all know what that means!

Anyone who wants to can come and visit the space to have a look round,
meet folks, chat and/or poke at projects.

The space should be open from about 19:00 (often earlier).

If you've got plans let us know what they are on -discuss.

I'll probably be in earlier than normal, eating junk food and jabbering
on about today's exciting Apple event whilst writing python on my beaten
up 12+ year old tablet thing.

It's Tuesday, and that means the hackerspace is open for all to come and
say hi.

Give us an email reply to tell us what you're going to come in and do -
show off some toys, play with some toys or leave your toys in your bag
because you're actually embarrassed about them.

If it's more your style, feel free to tweet us @57northhacklab - my ego
needs all the engagement, retweets, hashtags and likes it can get.

I'll be in working on either writing python, 3d printing planetary gears
or doing nothing.

[57north-discuss] Space Cleaning!

2017-08-25 Thread Dave Hibberd
Afternoon!

I've been thinking about the space lots recently, as I've had time on my
hands... so here's the annual reminder email!

It'd be really nice if we were a little better at keeping the place tidier and
cleaner - it's a bit dusty and nasty at the best of times!

This morning Kev and I have been out and picked up some cleaning supplies and
dropped them off - there's a mop/bucket, flash cleaner, loads of toilet paper,
a toilet brush and toilet duck! If things seem a bit manky, please use them!

It'd be nice if we could keep the communal areas cleaner - I'm aware our
neighbours aren't great at it either, but that's not justification for us not
cleaning and tidying the space we use!

There's toilet cleaning supplies to keep that nice to use (I wasn't enjoying
the black scum-line or the green mould...). Can you make sure you clean and
dry (with paper towels) any mugs you may use and put them away! If there are
no paper towels // toilet roll left, mention it to one of the directors and
we'll make sure that the supply is topped up!

Also, can we all make sure we're not leaving food/drink to get mouldy and
stink the place up? There was an old Gregg's coffee under the sink (!) that
was fostering a new civilisation and smelled a lot like vomit! It is now gone!

Hopefully by putting in a little effort at the boring stuff we can make our
space more welcoming for old and new members alike!

Much Love

[57north-announce] 57N OSM Mapping Day, 2017-08-12

2017-07-18 Thread Dave Hibberd
Good day friends and hackers!

I would like to announce the OSM Day 2017, on Saturday August 12 2017 @
10AM in 57North Hacklab!

This year's theme is "On yer bike" - Improving cycle accessibility data
in Aberdeen.

What's an OSM day? It's a day of playing with and hacking on Open Street
Map[1]!

This event shall provide a reasonably comprehensive introduction to Open
Street Map for those who are unfamiliar with it.
Key areas covered will be:
- What is OSM?
- How do I contribute?
- Where can I start?

For those who already know about OSM, it'll give you an excuse to go and
get mapping or hack on the map datasets.

How can I participate?

There's lots of information about cycle accessibility that OSM can offer
- pavement ratings, street quality gradings and cycle lane information
to name a few. Much of this hasn't been filled out in Aberdeen, which
can make cycle route planning hard! Let's make things a little better by
improving the map.

If you know of roads and paths which offer shared access but aren't on
the map, this is a great excuse to cycle out to them, collect
information and help others in the future!

It's also a pretty good excuse to go to bits of the city you haven't
explored yet and see what's there!

If you're not of the going-out-and-exercising type, you're welcome to
come along and work on code, trace in data from satellite maps or just
learn more!

What should I bring?

- Yourself
- Smartphone (GPS logging/survey recording)
- Laptop (Uploading information / app hacking)
- Bike (If you've got one!)
- Weather appropriate clothing
- Lunch

Afterwards, it'd be nice to go for dinner somewhere - if enough people
are interested I'd be happy to book a pub for dinner or similar.

Some of the information you may need is already available at the wiki
page [2]

Hope to see you there - feel free to ask any questions by email and/or
add your name to the attendees table on the wiki!

Good Tuesday everyone!

Today is open Tuesday at 57N and all are invited to come along after
7pm!

I shall be in, continuing my adventures in pygame I imagine.

[57north-discuss] Events

2017-07-11 Thread Dave Hibberd
Morning All,

More than half the year has gone! Oh goodness, where did it all go?

It's been a bit of a quiet one at 57N this year! I've been quite bad for
going to other places and playing with toys there.

Let's sort that and get some weekend events on the go! I'd really like
to see one weekend event a month happening in the hackerspace. It can
be a one day, two day or 3 day event! They don't take much work to
organise, and we're all willing to pitch in to make it happen!

There is a new category on the wiki - Events [1] - which can be used to
list your event. Just add `[[Category:Events]]` to the bottom of your
wiki page and it'll appear! There is probably a fancy way that semantic
mediawiki can make this easier, we'll work that out as we go along.

Before the end of the year, I intend to run a Game Jam [2], another OSM
Mapping weekend[2] and the popular Stupid Shit No One Needs hackathon
[3]. That should do August/September/October. Who's on November and
December? ChristmasHax could be fun, and I'd love to do a Fireworks
session in November for Guy Fawkes // TJ's Birthday weekend, but that
seems like a Bad Idea(tm).

Thoughts, ideas, questions and comments are all encouraged and welcome!

2017-06-29 Thread Dave Hibberd
Cryptonoise is a monthly session in 57North run in partnership with the
Open Rights Group.
It aims to bring together like minded people, facilitate discussion
about digital freedoms and to help people learn and explore the use of
cryptographic tools.

Usually we will discuss digital rights issues that are in the news.

If you are unsure, we'll happily help you learn how you can help to
protect your rights and your secrets in a hostile, digital world.

Bring a smartphone or laptop and browse the web anonymously, learn about
these technologies and chat about the reasons we need them.

Tinfoil hats optional.

As an aside I would like to mention a tool I came across yesterday,
ESPLORER [1]. It's an IDE for programming/flashing/stuff an ESP8266. It
understands our favourite, Micropython, so it might be worth a wee look

If anyone takes a look, give me a shout, I'll be curious to hear

Have a good one

[57north-announce] 57North Hacklab Ltd. AGM

From: Robert McWilliam
To: 57north-annou...@lists.57north.co
Subject: [57north-announce] 57North Hacklab Ltd. AGM
Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2017 22:54:38 +

Most of you will receive this twice as it is going to -announce and
members' email addresses.

57 North Hacklab Ltd. Will be holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM)
at 19:30 on Tuesday the 4th of April 2017 in the Hacklab, 3rd floor,
35A Union St, Aberdeen, AB11 5BN

Much of the procedure for the AGM (and other things about how we
operate as a company) are laid out in the Space Corp. Directives (see
clause 4) which can be obtained from Companies House or (if you trust me
that they're going to match the official Space Corp. Directives):
https://github.com/hackerdeen/articles/raw/master/hacklab_articles.pdf

Our current membership count is 18, a quarter of 18 is 4.5 which is
less than 5 so quorum for the meeting will require 4.5 members (Space
Corp. Directive 44). I don't really want half a member at the AGM so I
think we'll call that 5 members for quorum.

The AGM is intended to be a check that we are sticking to our legal
requirements rather than going through the day to day running of the
space (issues about the day to day running would be better raised on
the discuss mailing list).

Agenda for the meeting:

 - Election of meeting chair

 - Report on activities since last AGM

 - Treasurer's report

 - Election of directors

 - Any Other Competent Business

We are now accepting nominations for anyone who wishes to stand for
election as a director for the next year. Nominations can be made by
sending an email to 57north-annou...@lists.57north.co stating that you
would like to stand (and some explanation of why) before the meeting
or by indicating that you want to stand when we get to that part of
the meeting. Email is not instantaneous, and can be subject to
glitches, so if sending your nomination by email please send it as
soon as possible.

The details of how the election of directors will be conducted will be
up to whoever is elected to chair the meeting (Space Corp. Directives
48, 51 and 52) but will probably be something along the lines of: if
we have less than 5 candidates more nominations will be sought until
we get to 5 or more candidates. If we have exactly 5 candidates at
the AGM then they will become the new board. If we have more than 5
candidates then we'll have an election to decide who gets to be a
director - previously [0] we've done this with Meek STV via
opavote.org, I'd be in favour of using this method again if an
election is needed.

If any member can't make the meeting there are a couple of things they
can do to participate should they wish to.

Any issues you'd like to have raised at the meeting can be sent to
57north-discuss@lists.57north.co or privately to any of the directors
or to the directors collectively at
57north-ctte-priv...@lists.57north.co (please make it clear you are
sending something you want raised at the AGM) and we will see that it
is brought up.

A proxy can be appointed to vote on your behalf at the meeting (see
Space Corp. Directives 47, 53 and 54). If you would like to appoint a
proxy please send an email to 57north-ctte-priv...@lists.57north.co

Email sent to the 57north-ctte-private address is redirected to all
presently listed directors and is not archived by 57North Hacklab (but
may be by the individual directors).

The email (preferably PGP signed, with a key trusted by the directors to
be yours) should contain:

 - Your name and address (as it appears in the register of members
   (hackhub))

 - Who you would like to appoint as a proxy

 - That this is for the AGM on 4th April 2017

 - If you have any specifications for how the proxy is to act on your
   behalf.

The proxy should bring the same details to the meeting on paper and
signed by the member they are to act as a proxy for.

Remote participation in our meetings is now allowed, if anyone who
can't make it to the meeting would like to participate remotely I can
set up a conference call and/or google hangout for the meeting. Any
members who would like to connect via one of these channels should let
me know - I will not set this up unless demand for it is communicated
to me. If anyone has a different preference for how they would like to
participate remotely: let me know and I'll see what can be done.

[57north-announce] 2017-03-21 Hackerspace Open Tuesday!

2017-03-21 Thread Dave Hibberd
Today is open Tuesday at 57N and all are invited to come along after
7pm!

If you're unsure, ask in IRC[2] or by email!

If you're new, I'd suggest you bring a laptop, and perhaps a project you
want to work on.

If you're coming in, feel free to reply and tell us all what you're
planning to do.

I'm going to talk loudly, hopefully fiddle with my new toy and continue
my QT based adventures!

Tonight I need to add QStrings and doubles to a QStandardItemModel in
c++ and export that to QML so I can use the data to populate a table and
place items on a map.

2015-12-04 Thread Dave Hibberd
Howdy y'all!

We are now in Advent, if you follow the Christmas stuff, and this is my
last full weekend in Aberdeen until the new year!

With that in mind, if you're not up to much tomorrow, you're welcome to
come round to my place and drink tea, soft drinks and/or alcohol. It's a
bit small, but I've got fibre internets, MPD, a fridge, potentially 8
chairs and cooking facilities. It's also warmer and more comfy than the
space.

You can bring a laptop and hack or just bring yourself and good chat :)

If you want to swing by, drop me an email or ping me on IRC so I've got
a vague idea of numbers and stuff.

If need be, I can go past Costco during the day and pick up a slab of
alcohol, but that's quite organised!

Much love,

My concern with this is hosting LDAP external to the space. Is it
possible to mirror the server and have a local and remote synchronised,
or is it not that big a deal?
I guess we'd still have the network home drives on the Synology
and mount them at boot.

As for the wiki/etc, there's LDAP plugins for mediawiki and a whole host
of other things too - I've done ejabberd against it amongst other
things, so there's plenty of tests that can be done!

Tony - I had a physical install of Win8 on a machine, and used
clonezilla to back it up.
Following this, I used clonezilla in a VM environment and a network
shared folder to 'restore' that image to a virtual machine.

Maybe that way, you can get the best of both worlds!

get up to. There's hacking on projects, drinking of beer and tea and
trying to prove each other wrong through the medium of spirited
 discussion.

If you're planning on coming in, reply to this and let everyone else
know. Tell us about your current project, silly plan, weird idea or
latest madcap adventure you've got yourself into.

 Much Love,

Eeeevening all!

If you're about tomorrow, there's been some talk of playing with radios
at the university.

If this is your thing, swing by - there should be HF, data modes and
maybe talking to people on the local repeater too. We shall see.

Plan is to start at 1230 @ Fraser Noble Building. Come play! Give us a
shout on 433.525MHz FM or irc if you're locked out and lost

I trust you survived the annual Mr T celebration day, April 1st - did

I was daahn saahf in Lahndahn last week, and have missed my nerdy
playtime, so I'll be about the space from roughly 730/8ish, enjoying
this delightful weather by staying indoors and maybe eating some
batchelor chow.

Come join me, do your own thing - as ever, I'll be trying to do
electronics things but getting distracted by anything that's shiny,
really.

Happy Thursday everyone!

It's time of the oft rumoured, rarely discussed return of
music/noisenight!

I'm going to be in looking tired and run down, considering the finer

If you want to come in and make a racket, now's your chance - it doesn't
have to be musical or tuneful. I probably won't be...

Ping a message if you plan to come in and make annoying beeps and/or

[57north-discuss] Radio Adventures

2015-03-12 Thread Dave Hibberd
Good Thursday hackers!

Tom and I have had a discussion and decided we would like to see more of
Scotland now that the Spring is on its way.

To this end, we are going to go on an adventure to ~ 57.7009, -3.4511
with an HF radio, a VHF radio and probably a picnic in my tiny car.

Because I'm morally opposed to doing anything on time, this has no set
day yet, but I can 100% guarantee it will be on either Saturday or
Sunday. We will likely leave from Aberdeen university at 9ish, getting
there about 11ish, setting up and radioing for a few hours and then
having dinner or something and coming back down the road later.

I thiink at this point the free spaces in my car are now booked, but
if you would like to come play, post up here and we'll try to get
another car involved so that 4 can come!

Come play with radios and explore the north east woo!
