[AI] Miniature camera for people with macula degeneration-Technology review MIT

2009-04-07 Thread Subramani L
Implantable Telescope for the Eye

By Emily Singer

A miniature telescope implanted into the eye could soon help people with
vision loss from end-stage macular degeneration. Last week, an advisory
panel for
the Food and Drug Administration unanimously recommended that the agency
approve the implant. Clinical trials of the device, which is about the
size of
a pencil eraser, suggest it can improve vision by about three and a half
lines on an eye chart.

This is one of the few options for people with end-stage macular
degeneration, says
Kathryn Colby,
an eye surgeon at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, in Boston,
who helped develop the surgical procedure used to implant the device.

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in people age 65
and older, affecting more than 10 million Americans. The disease strikes
the center
of the retina, called the macula, which is especially important for
reading, watching television, and recognizing faces. While some
treatments exist to
slow progression of the disease, no treatments are currently available
for those in the latest stages of the disease, who have irreversible
damage to the
macula. An estimated 50,000 to 70,000 people per year fall into this
category.

The implant, developed by
VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies,
a start-up based in Saratoga, CA, consists of two lenses within a small
glass tube. Once inside the eye, it works like a fixed telephoto lens,
acting in
conjunction with the cornea to project a magnified image of whatever the
wearer is looking at over a large part of the retina. Because only the
central
parts of the retina are damaged in the disease, magnifying the image on
the eye allows the retinal cells outside the macula to detect the object
and send
that information to the brain. (These cells are normally involved in
peripheral vision and normally generate low-resolution visual
information compared
to the macula cells--you can't read a sign in your periphery, for
example. But magnifying the image also has the advantage of making it
easier for the
cells to interpret.)

This change in vision is significant to patients, says Allen Hill,
PCEO of VisionCare. In addition to improving vision, it provides the
ability to have
normal eye contact, which is a crucial part of social interaction, says
Eli Peli,
a scientist at The Schepens Eye Research Institute, who has consulted
for the company.

During the implant procedure, surgeons first remove cataracts from the
eye. (Because both macular degeneration and cataracts are age related,
most patients
with end-stage macular degeneration also have cataracts.) They then
insert the telescope, which is held in place by the resident tissue.

The device is implanted in only one eye--patients use this eye for
detailed vision and the untreated eye for peripheral vision. That takes
some getting
used to, says Peli. Instead of using two parts of the same eye, they
must switch between two eyes; if they see someone coming but can't tell
who it is,
they need to switch to other eye.

One safety concern associated with the implant is loss of the
endothelial cells that are responsible for keeping the cornea
transparent. While cell loss
occurs with any eye surgery, implantation of the telescope requires a
larger incision than typical cataract surgery and thus destroys more
endothelial
cells. However, scientists have found that cell loss stabilizes over
time. Patients with the implant lose about 3 percent of their
endothelial cells per
year, compared to about 2.5 percent to 3 percent for patients undergoing
traditional cataract surgery. Because endothelial cells do not
replicate, substantial
loss of these cells can worsen vision.

The FDA is expected to approve the telescope, as the agency usually
follows the advice of its advisory panels. VisionCare plans to market
the device following
FDA approval, estimated for late 2009. The device has already been
approved for use in Europe, though the company plans to launch the
product first in
the United States.

I am not aware about the accessibility of the on-line interface of SBI. But
our other members can tell you more about. For JRE, go to control pannel,
add/remove programs and check. If it is not listed, go to jawa.com and
download the same.

Thanks and regards,

Subject: [AI] recover your files with Recuva.

Most folks don’t realize that deleting a file on their computer
doesn’t erase it. All that does is tell the computer that it can use
that space on the hard
drive to store other stuff. It will eventually be overwritten, but
even then it can be recovered for awhile using many programs. so now
you can understand how actually data recovery works,, let us proceed
to an accessible program to do this recovery.

download the free and very accessible recovery tool, called Recuva.

the direct download link is,
http://download.piriform.com/rcsetup124.exe

the program is hardly 4 MB in size, and sadly is not been further developed.
which means, there will be no future updates of this free and very
useful application.

just download and run the setup.
prompts are easy to understand and follow, so just set according to
your preferences and complete the setup process.

open the program from either shortcut created at your desktop or,
start all programs Recuva Recuva

a Wizard will open which will guide you to the rest of recovering process.
advance users can skip this Wizard and then will be taken to advance
screen, ( which, is not very accessible from a basic user's
prospective. )
here, i'm covering the Wizard because not every1 is a advance user,
and secondly, the Wizard is easy to understand and is more accessible.

select what type file you are searching for, and if you can remember,
where was it located.
if you dont remember it, just select the radio button i don't know
and continue.

at next screen, there is a check box saying deep scan, if you cant
find your file with a normal scan, check this option and try again.

after the scan is 100% done ( which, jaws will announce you ), tab to
the list view where all your deleted files are found.

if you know the first letter of the deleted file, hit it, and that
will make locating the lost file easier.
else, you can just keep arrowing down and find the lost file.

when you are at a file, your screen reader will announce what is the
status of the lost file.
it will tell you if the file is in excellent recoverable state ( which
means the track and the sector on which the file was stored, has not
been over written with any other file ), or poor ( meaning the file's
location was re written with some other file ) and it will also tell
you which file over wrote the location.

naturally, the file with excellent state has better chances of getting
fully recovered then the file with poor state.

once you have located the file, hit your application key, ( next to
your right ctrl key )

select recover option, and a tree view will open asking where to
restore the recovered file.
select the folder, hit okay, and that's it!

your lost, deleted /removed file has been recovered.
and is placed in the destination folder.

regards,

ruchir.

[AI] Facebook Commits To Making Social Networking More Accessible For Visually Challenged Users

2009-04-07 Thread ruchir falodiya
by
Robin Wauters
 on April 7, 2009

Facebook
 is working together with the
American Foundation for the Blind
(AFB) to make its social networking service more accessible to users
who are blind or visually impaired. In a
company blog post
, the non-profit organization’s President, Carl Augusto, explains
which problems visually challenged users encounter when surfing the
web and how they’re
able to overcome these issues with the help of website publishers,
developers and designers.

This makes sense from Facebook’s perspective too, of course. There are
a lot of visually impaired people on the planet, and they want to
connect to their
friends, relatives and peers just as much as you and me.

According to
stats
provided by the AFB, there are over 20 million Americans who have
reported experiencing significant vision loss.

Augusto writes:

block quote
You may be wondering how people with vision loss use computers or surf
the web. The answer is quite simple: People who are blind or visually
impaired use
a screen magnification program to enlarge fonts in order to optimize
the screen for reading, or they use a screen reading program that
reads the text aloud.
These are quick, efficient and helpful solutions — that is, if the
websites and computer programs are properly designed.

The challenge is that not all Web pages are compatible with screen
readers and magnifiers. When a website is built without regard to
accessible design,
screen reading software cannot interpret the information, which
prevents the blind person from accessing the site. Social networking
sites present some
especially difficult challenges. For instance, images are an important
part of the site experience, but it is rare that photos get described.
Even while
in the middle of reading a page, comments or links can change in ways
that are undetectable to the screen reader or fall outside the viewing
window of
screen-magnification.

block quote end

Facebook has been working with the organization for 2 years, and so
far this had led to a number of improvements which are
listed here.

http://www.facebook.com/help.php?page=440hloc=en_US

In the blog post, Augusto writes that they’re also working together
with Facebook to implement some design changes that will make the site
more usable
for people with visual impairments. I have a feeling they won’t be
starting Facebook Groups and Polls
 against these changes.

I quickly looked for pages on MySpace and Bebo where they indicate
that they’re committed to making the user experience for visually
impaired members better,
but didn’t immediately find anything. Google, on the other hand, tackles
usability issues
extensively, and is for example experimenting with a
custom search engine
for blind or visually challenged users.

We’re not here to lecture anyone, but if you’re building websites and
Web applications, you might want to keep into consideration that there
are millions
of people who could potentially be using them, provided you make it
possible for them to do so.
AFB Consulting
 can help you with that.

Hi,

If you click on the link where it says something Download logo2 followed by
word graphic, there another page will open, and there will be heading for
ie users and another for firefox users.

Another solution is to look for the link which has been posted by sender of
this post which contains the words 2006. Open that and look for the
heading.

Another one which you can try is to visit:

sudeep333.ourtoolbar.com

But after installing the toolbar, I couldn't understand what to do!

Because it is not showing in my browser, have checked the faq, but still
don't know.
Would request to the sender if he can post the instructions on this.
Hope it helps,

Amar Jain.

Kurzweil 1000 version9 and which are available in the market.

The person who wishes to buy is interested in buying a scanner only.
If cost effective, printers and scanners together (to in one) also can be
an option.

Looking forward for your tips.

RGDS,
P. Balaraman.

Surely, the person might be familiar from the predicaments, hurdles,

Keeping this fact in missiles, I’d like to appeal all the people who

Visually impaired candidate hopes to make a difference

PTI

Monday, April 6, 2009 12:00 IST

Lucknow: At first look, 52-year-old Khairul Bashar would pass off as
any another candidate trying his luck in the Lok Sabha polls.

But there is something special about this candidate which makes him
different from others in the rat race.

Bashar, who is making a debut in electoral politics by contesting as
an independent from Azamgarh parliamentary constituency, is visually
challenged and
physically impaired.

My aim to contest elections in not to win the seat.I only want to
give a message that people should raise their voice against
corruption. I am fighting
against this corrupt system, Bashar said.

Bashar, who runs a grocery store in Amilo village of Azamgarh
district, said though he cannot see from his eyes, he can feel that
the situation in the country
is not very good.

I cannot see from my eyes, I see the world from my heart and can feel
the pain of the people. Politicians do nothing for the poor and needy.
They are more
concerned about their own welfare, he alleged.

Bhashar, who lost his vision at the age of six after a bout of chicken
pox, said politicians have so far had done nothing for the
development of the area.
Given a chance I want to work for the development of the area, this is
my single point manifesto.

Bashra has got support from Mritak Sangh, an organisation which works
for people, who despite being alive have been declared dead by their
family members
and relatives.

I was very impressed with Bashar's tirade against corruption. Aaj kal
jab aankh wale andhe ho rahe hai, to ek andha aankh wala ho raha hai
(in these times
when those who can see are turning blind deliberately, a visually
impaired person has got the vision, said Lal Bihari, who runs the
Mritak Sangh.

He said that in present times, when politicians swtich loyality in
seconds, Bashar was setting an example before the people.

At least a blind man has the courage to stand up and raise his voice.
This is very important when Bashar has nothing to do with politics and
he is not
a politician, he added.

Bashar, meanwhile, said that given a chance he would certainly raise
the voice of his people in Parliament.

If people find me good enough, they will certainly support me, said
the man, who has `Andha Kanoon, Andha Umeedwar, Brastachar par hoga
war' (blind law,
blind candidate, corruption will be tackled) as his slogan.

[AI] Reading in print view of ms word?

2009-04-07 Thread Amar Jain
Dear All,

Subject looks like nonsense I know. But what to do, very bad at these
applications.

Why does not Jaws read in word if print view has been checked after some
stage? Though the text is there.

For example, I composed a letter, in which in normal view Jaws was reading
even after yours faithfully, such as my name, date etc, but was not reading
after yours faithfully in print view. Why?
Is there anything which we need to do? in fact the next page also does not
work so what is this.
Guide please!
Regards,
Amar Jain.

[AI] Screen reading support for Safari Browser?

2009-04-07 Thread Amar Jain
Dear Listers,

Yesterday, a visually impaired person asked me is there any screen reader
for Safari?

I found that it is apple based application, so, Voice Over is the name.

The things which I want to know is that How far Voice Over is good?

Is there any screen reading software for Apple based OS which is as good as
Jaws?

Lastly, that person installed Safari on XP machine, without any changes. How
it is possible?

And since it is possible, any windows screen reader supports Safari then?

If we can install Safari then why not voice over or similar software for
using Safari?

If anybody has tried or has experience then please share with me, as it may
help to create some report.
Regards,
Amar Jain.

Re: [AI] Questions on using rules in Outlook Express.

2009-04-07 Thread Ranjana

Hi Amar,
If you made a rule that the mails coming from any particular ID should go to
the specified folder, then when ever the mail will come from that particular
e-mail ID they will automatically go to the specified folder. There is no
need to apply the rules again and again.

Hope it will help.
With RGDS,
Ranjana.

Subject: [AI] Questions on using rules in Outlook Express.

Hello All,

I have 2 accounts in Outlook Express.

Now I want that whenever any mail arrives to the specified address, should
be moved into specific folder.

But the question here is, that do I need to apply the rule everytime when
I

receive messages from that account?

Example:

Where the To Line Contains 'chubbya...@gmail.com'
Move it to the specified folder Anil Jain.

Now, do I need to apply this rule every time when any mail arrives in
chubbyamar account?
Regards,
Amar Jain.

[AI] Reading in print view of ms word?

2009-04-07 Thread Mahesh Narasimhan Iyer
Hi Amar,

I always work in Print view and do not face any sort of problem.
Kindly check the cursor position and bring it on the document you wish
to work on. Press Insert+F10 (list of running applications), then
use up-down arrows and choose the document (application) and then hit
enter. Just try this and this might work.

[AI] Our flexible friend

2009-04-07 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Our flexible friend

Ian Sample

There is growing evidence that the brain can be trained to compensate for dead
or damaged areas.

The idea that the brain is hardwired is steadily being overturned.

On 8 March 1969, an extraordinary experiment was reported in the pages of
Nature, Europe's leading science journal. It involved a group of people who took
turns to sit in an old dentist's chair and describe the room around them. They
commented on the presence of a phone on the table, a nearby vase, people's
expressions and how they wore their hair. It was remarkable because all were
completely blind.

The scientific establishment took a dim view of the work and, for the most
part, dismissed it as implausible. But today it stands as one of the first, and
most striking, demonstrations of neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to adapt.
The blind people had learned to see through the sensation of touch.

Here's what happened. The back of the chair had been fitted with hundreds of
tiny stimulators that were hooked up to a video camera. As the camera panned
the room, those in the chair felt tiny vibrations that seemed to dance across
their skin as the image moved. With practice, the blind volunteers' brains
learned to turn these vibrations into a mental picture of the room. Some became
so good at it that they ducked when a ball was tossed at the camera.

Once fringe science

What was regarded as fringe science 40 years ago is currently at the cutting
edge of neuroscience. With the right training, scientists now know the brain
can reshape itself to work around dead and damaged areas, often with dramatic
benefits. Therapies that exploit the brain's power to adapt have helped people
overcome damage caused by strokes, depression, anxiety and learning
disabilities, and may one day replace drugs for some of these conditions. Some
studies
suggest therapies that tap into the brain's neuroplasticity are already making
a big difference. Children with language difficulties have been shown to
make significant progress using computer training tools that are the equivalent
of cerebral cross-training. Work is underway to investigate whether it
is possible to stave off a loss of brain plasticity in older age, which might
help to address memory problems linked to Alzheimer's disease. Some
psychoanalysts
are adopting techniques to help people overcome relationship troubles,
obsessions, worries and bad habits.

The idea of brain plasticity has been discovered and forgotten many times over
the centuries. The ancient Greeks accepted the idea, with Socrates believing
that people could train their brains the way gymnasts train their bodies.
Around the time of Galileo, the idea fell out of favour, as scientists began
to see the world mechanistically, with each object, organ and even parts of an
organ being attributed well-defined, unchanging roles. It was these ideas
that led to the notion of our brains being hardwired, an idea that today is
steadily being overturned.

Norman Doidge, a psychiatrist at the University of Toronto and author of the
New York Times bestseller, The Brain That Changes Itself, says our ongoing
belief that our brains are hardwired has held up medical progress.

Our best and brightest neuroscientists thought our brains were structured like
complex machines, with each part performing one function in one location,
and that had implications. If you were born with a part that was defective, and
say it gave you a learning disorder, it meant there was nothing you could
do, you had to learn to live with it. If you sustained a brain injury or had a
stroke and part of your brain broke down, there was nothing you could do.
Brain exercises made no sense, and even more fundamentally, human nature was as
fixed as the brain from which it emerged, he says.

Neuroplasticity does not see the different regions of the brain as completely
versatile and certainly not interchangeable. But it recognises that if part
of the brain is damaged, it can be possible to train other areas to take on, at
least to some extent, the job of the lost brain matter.

One of Doidge's case studies, Cheryl Schiltz, demonstrates how brain plasticity
can transform a damaged life. Her story began in 1997, when, at the age
of 39, she picked up an infection after a routine operation. To clear it up,
she was given a course of the antibiotic, gentamicin. When used in excess,
the drug can sometimes destroy cells in the inner ear, causing hearing loss,
but it is cheap and effective, so is widely used. In Schiltz's case, gentamicin
destroyed her vestibulary system, the looping canals of the inner ear that
allow us to tell up from down. Tests showed she had only 2 per cent of her
vestibulary
function left.

What happens to a person who cannot balance is striking. Schiltz felt as if she
was constantly falling, and as a result, she usually did. When she hit the
floor, the feeling didn't go away. Sometimes, it was as if a trapdoor had
