[AI] Android fans, stay safe!
Dear all Access Indians, An online security company has exposed a bug in Facebook's Android app, which collects phone numbers without permission, even if the users are not members of social networking site or sign in to the app. According to the Huffington Post, the problem has been confirmed by Facebook and would be addressed in the new version of the app, with a spokesman for the social networking site revealing that the flaw came up in February this year. Symantec, announced on their blog that Facebook's Android App was leaking the phone numbers of Android devices on which it had been installed, which could send the phone numbers straight to the site's servers, with more than hundreds of millions of Android devices affected by the bug. However, Facebook's spokesman has said that the social network did not use or process the numbers in any way, stating that it was a bug for which they thanked Symantec's notice and it was already fixed in the next version of the app, which would be available for download today. [AI] Assistance on Indigo
Dear List Members, A quick question if I may. I will be doing some domestic air travel in India in early November and one of the flights is likely to be with Indigo. This would most likely be a flight from Bangalore to Hyderabad. Having not used Indigo before, I am wondering if their assistance to blind passengers is acceptable or not. Also, do I need to book assistance with them in advance? Thanks for any inputs. Re: [AI] Assistance on Indigo
Dear Kiran, My experience with Indigo is reasonably good and I have never booked assistance in advance. I have travelled all over India using their services and am not particularly unhappy. Of course, sometimes they do turn ridiculous by offering weelchair to blind people etc. but I suppose that happens all over the world as I was offered one in Newark. I forgot to mention that he will get his job at a private concern. Is there any low cost facility for vh workers? In Kolkata there was one run by Salvation Army. The problem is that boarders there did not pay the nominal rent of Rs. 45 per month and the facility has been discontinued. The hostle is still there, but it is occupied by the old vh boarders without rent. Re: [AI] Assistance on Indigo
I have used Indigo as well and find them extremely helpful. The Bangalore Hyderabad sector is what I have used the most. I usually inform them in advance about my requirement for assistance and they make a note of it and offer the necessary help. Yes, they do offer a wheel chair, because in their minds I suppose, that is the only kind of assistance a person with disability would need. They are also the only people who have their in flight services menu available in Braille. You can go ahead and use them without any trouble I should think. Re: [AI] Assistance on Indigo
all you have to do is call them 5 minuts before reaching the departure airport and tell them to send some1 at the entrence to get u. they will b with u till u sit in the plain. once inside, u just have to inform the flight atttendant that your gonna need the same assistance on reaching your destination. they themselves will call and inform the place of your arrival. you may be the last person to get off the flight, but u need not worry. they're very consistent with their services. [AI] regarding an app that serves my utility like excel or access and pertaining commerce
hi all! Hope all r fine through the God's grace... I hope that most people would be wondering about the subject which I have posted and I think that its very ambiguous but I am trying to make it clear here: I would like to get a suggestion where I can make a data base of all the transaction of rent; payment to be made for example, the insurance, electricity bill etc; the maturity of the lessee etc and I do not know whether this is possible or not. I would like to get notification where I can go and collect the rent. I am unable to explain but I shall try it by giving an example. For instance, I possess a land, I have constructed a building on it. A person approaches and he will be my tenant. Every month, I got to receive the rent. This is simple if I am having only one transaction i.e. if there is one tenant but if there are many like this, I cannot know that when should I receive the rent?, when should the recurring payments from my side be made? When should I do the capital expenditure? and all that. Hope my question is clear to all experts and if I could get a suggestion where I can get an app that notifies me to do all this and also allows the data entry of all these transactions, this will be very helpful for me though. -- in regards Shreyas Nagaraj Reddy Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Assistance on Indigo
Hi Kiran, Very recently I have travelled with Indigo from Mumbai to Delhi and my return tickets were also booked with same Airlines. If you do not inform them in advance, then you may have to wait on the counter for 5-10 minutes. My advice will be that call their customer care gguys or fill the form for assistance online. However, before 10-15 mins of reaching the counter, call up their Deputy Manager on duty, number of the same can be obtained from the call center (supervisor), and you will have someone to assist you right till the Aircraft. [AI] Airport check of artificial leg leaves marketing executive in tears
I was wondering, how come this one never made it to the list? --- Jul 12, 2013, 02.52AM IST TNN[ Jayashree Nandi ] Suranjana Ghosh Aikara says removing the leg amounts to stripping. NEW DELHI: Suranjana Ghosh Aikara's harrowing experience of boarding a flight from Mumbai to Delhi was one of the most shared stories on social networking sites on Thursday. The security staff at the airport had demanded that this 38-year-old marketing professional from Mumbai take off her prosthetic leg to be separately passed through security check. Suranjana dreads this while travelling in India since this means an intrusive security screening which would require me to strip. Why strip? Because I am an above knee amputee, she said in her moving post. She argued with them, showed them her disability certificate and reasoned with senior security officers. After a long, difficult and humiliating experience which left her completely drained, she was physically frisked and allowed an explosive trace detector (ETD) test. She had an even more painful experience in 2011. She was at Delhi's T3 terminal and was asked to remove her artificial leg for the first time. She approached senior officers and yelled loudly to draw the attention of other passengers but soon was reduced to tears. With folded hands, I begged them to let me go as I had a genuine problem. I showed them my business card. The lady officer-in-charge said something along the lines of 'Aise nahi karte toh kaise pata chalta ki aap terrorist nahi hain'? (If we hadn't put you through this, how would we have known that you're not a terrorist?). In minutes, from a smartly dressed, self-confident woman and professional, I had been reduced to a spectacle to be mocked at. My dignity and self-respect were totally battered, she recollects. Strangely, Suranjana and other people with disabilities have never experienced this at airports abroad. Many airports have body scanners and elsewhere, an ETD is used. Disability rights activist Javed Abidi was once asked to get up from the wheelchair so that it could be screened separately but he did not budge. In fact, he makes it a point to create a fuss and ask security officials why they don't have the technology to search people with disability without inconveniencing or humiliating them. He has received numerous complaints of people being harassed and has conveyed this to the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). I have never been subjected to this abroad — in Europe, Africa or even other parts of Asia. When I am travelling to US or Europe, they usually use a small machine to screen the wheelchair. They use a special kind of paper or a pair of gloves that is used to lightly pat your prosthetic limb or wheelchair and then that paper or the gloves are passed through the machine to check for any trace of explosives. It's a dignified process and security personnel make sure you are comfortable, says Abidi. Senior CISF officers say they are only sticking to the rules and an EDT can only detect explosives. Removing a prosthetic limb is a must for security and has to be complied with though at times they do let people pass if convinced about their genuineness. Both CISF and BCAS refused to comment officially on the security procedure. Suranjana explains that the emotional impact of the limb being removed apart, the procedure is complicated and unnecessary. Being in a senior position in marketing, she travels frequently. Getting back into the limb can be tedious as the person has to pull the stump (residual limb) into the socket of the artificial limb. Also, crepe bandage is needed to secure the limb. On July 5, when Suranjana was travelling with her mother, her ordeal didn't end with the security officials allowing her to undergo just the ETD test. I was led to a separately screened-off area. The area was completely open from the top; there was no door that could be locked. Lady officer No. 2 physically frisked me and did the ETD test. I was sweaty with the stress and my eyes were streaming with tears by this time. I was overwhelmed by the effort and the humiliation that I was subjected to for something that should have been an easy process. she says. This lack of sensitivity is what rankles the most. Entrepreneur Sanjana Goyal who has muscular dystrophy travels quite often and cannot leave her wheelchair during security check. When she was travelling from Chandigarh recently, security officials allowed her to go through the check sitting in her wheelchair. But they asked her to pay Rs 10,000 extra because her wheelchair was being counted as luggage. The wheelchair acts as my limb. Do you count the weight of anyone's limbs separately? I argued with them and finally managed to explain that for a disabled person, prosthetic limbs or the wheelchair are almost like parts of the body, she said. Security personnel at Delhi airport usually ask Suvarna Raj, a government employee, to check in her wheelchair

[AI] cloud computing
Don’t be confused by the expression “cloud services, you are probably already using them if you use Amazon, Gmail, Hotmail, or Facebook. All it means is that your data is stored virtually. Cloud computing is the delivery of hosted services over the Internet .The origin of the term cloud computing is not known but it may be based on practice of using drawings of clouds to denote networks in diagrams of computing and communications systems. Cloud computing provides easy, scalable access to computing resources and IT services. It can be thought of as similar Cloud Computing to a utility like an electricity grid, delivered over a network .It involves the sharing of resources, services and infrastructure and can often be very cost effective. Amazon played a key role in the development of cloud computing by modernizing their data centers, which were using a fraction of their capacity . The new cloud architecture gave significant efficiency improvements and small, fast-moving teams could add new features faster and more easily. Amazon then developed a product that could provide cloud computing to external customers, and launched Amazon Web Service on a utility computing basis in 2006. There are three characteristics of cloud services that differentiate them from traditional hosting. list of 3 items • They are sold on demand, typically by the minute or the hour; • They are elastic — a user can have as much or as little of a service as they want at any given time; • services are fully managed by the provider , so the consumer only needs a personal computer and Internet access list end To be successful, Companies today need to compete in the global economy and keep up with the pace of innovation. Their IT departments must be agile when responding to changing business needs, and must optimise efficiency and manage costs while enabling their business to stay productive. Cloud computing is one of the key technology trends creating opportunities to address these needs. Private or Public Cloud. list of 2 items • A public cloud sells services to anyone on the Internet. An example is Amazon Web Services which is thought to be currently the largest public cloud provider. • A private cloud is a privately owned network or a data centre that supplies hosted services to a limited number of clients. list end When a service provider uses public cloud resources to create their private cloud, this is known as a virtual private cloud. A hybrid cloud or hybrid IT is a composition of at least one private cloud and at least one public cloud. Some resources are managed in-house and others are provided externally. For example, an organization might use a public cloud service, such as Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for archived data but continue to maintain in-house storage for customer data that is still active. This hybrid approach takes advantage of the scalability and cost-effectiveness that a public cloud environment offers without exposing critical applications and data to third-party vulnerabilities. Cloud services are broadly divided into three categories: list of 3 items • Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), • Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) • Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). list end Infrastructure-as-a-Service allows users to start, stop, and access and configure their virtual servers and storage. An example is Amazon Web Services. A user will pay for only the capacity that is needed, and can bring more online when required. Because this pay-for-what-you-use model resembles the way electricity, fuel and water are consumed, it’s sometimes referred to as utility computing. Platform-as-a-service is a set of software and product development tools hosted on the provider’s infrastructure. An example is GoogleApps. Developers create applications on the provider’s platform. Software as a service providers manage the infrastructure and platforms on which the applications run. It is sometimes referred to as “on-demand software” and is usually priced on a pay-per-use basis, often using a subscription fee. Examples can be anything from Web-based email to inventory control and database processing. Because the service provider hosts both the application and the data, the end user is free to use the service from anywhere. SaaS can usually help business to reduce IT operational costs by outsourcing hardware and software maintenance and support to the cloud provider. This reduces their requirement for hardware/software spending and personnel expenses. Because applications are hosted centrally, updates can be released without users having to install new software. A potential downside is that the users’ data are stored on the cloud provider’s server,so there could be unauthorized access to the data. Cloud backup or online backup Cloud backup or online backup allows data to be backed up by sending a copy of the data over a network to an off-site server The server is often hosted by a third-party service provider, who
