Re: [AI] decent lunch etiquettes for person with visual impairment
Dear All. I have just been following this discussion and it is quite interesting. Just 1 tip I would like to share here: Frankly speaking I am not at all comfortable eating rice etc with my hands I only prefer spoon for that. I understand that some times especially in the plates bowls having broader edges, it becomes a little difficult to manage but I take care of this by holding my spoon in 1 hand and try to gather the food around the center of the plate.. also with the tip of the finger of the other hand try to touch the edge of the plate to find if the food is not coming out at the edge etc. please do not miss to cary a tissue in your other hand so that as soon as you dirty the tip of your finger you could immediately wipe it. Some times it is not even necessary especially in the parties or social gathering that you have to finish each and every partical of the rice ect you may leave some in the plate and if some 1 askes you then you could tell them that you are full with the food. There is no reason what so ever to avoid any kind of food or even all together going to the parti because you are not able to eat comfortably with the spoon or folk. With regards to pizza dosa etc there is no harm in eating the same with your hand as so many sighted people are also not comfortable eating the same with knife and folks. As long as you keep on wiping your hands it is perfectly ok to eat with your hands also For me if I eat outside even dishes like pao bhaji or roti sabji I make it a point to eat the sabji / bhaji with the spoon while rolling the roti or holding a portion of the pao in my other hand and then eating the same with it this ways I don't dirty my fingers also. Just some of my ideas which sute me, hope this may help some of you. Thanks and warm Regards, Nikita V. Re: [AI] decent lunch etiquettes for person with visual impairment
Truly agreed. In roti sabji thing, I even doing the same as nikita mam has stated. But one thing I would like to mention about my problem is that, yes in our house, there is a special plate for me which I use every day to have my food. I also feel very comfortable using my hand to have my regular food. Even when I go to my relatives, or my friends house, they know my problem, and serve me whatever I want. In hotel, there will not be any problem for me since I even use my hand to have. and But you know, whenever we attain some anivercery, I have to have food with spoon in a very flat surfaces glass plate. That time it will really be very cumbersom for me! if this threat contain the material which actually violating the guideline of this mailing list, moderator or any person or persons who is in the moderator status have the full right to close or remove this threat emmediately without any notice. moreover, instead of doing unparliamentry things such as band the person from there particular mailing list who has responded this mail, moderator has the full right to moderate, or even band raju singh from there mailing list! -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Harish Kapoor Sent: Thursday, September 19, 2013 12:03 PM To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerningthe disabled. It is a matter of choice whether you enjoy eating by hand or you want to learn using these things. Although I myself love eating with my hands, but I have always tried and obtained a certain level of comfort in using spoon etc if the situation demands so. Because I don't practice it regularly, the speed becomes an issue to a limited extent. Based on my discussion with those who are born blind and are living in Westurn countries, they are not taught to eat with their hands, and have been using these spoons and cutleries right from their childhood and have been managing quite well so far. My suggestions are as follows: 1. It requires focus and practice. The major area where we need to focus is the dimension of the plate, and if it is a gravy, then we need to make sure that the spoon is straight. Tip: when you are at home, try taking water in an empty spoon from the plate and drink it. This way, one can take even the gravy which is not so thick. 2. I often have difficulties in cutting the items because I have never given it the focus which it demands. A knife in other hand or a fork may be helpful. 3. When you are about to finish your dish, and it is the end part which causes discomfort, then either gently use your thumb / first finger to see that the remaining quantity of the dish is in your spoon. If it is too much of hassle, then I opt to leave the end portion. 4. Not a happy solution, but if you are stuck, then identify the items which you can easily eat with fork / spoon. Rice with daal, is a good option. Noodles can be easily eaten using fork, if you rap and eat. 5. For things like Pizza, it is better and easier to use hand than to use fork and knife. 6. Another idea is to take vegitables / dal in bowl instead of plate, it makes things more simpler. 7. When I have to eat kake, I try and get it in the disposable cup (used for ice creams), so that the quantity is less to eat. This much is enough for now, hope it is of some help. Thanks, -- Amar Jain. The ice-cream was served in a deep plate which helped me target it and avoid spilling over. My colleagues guided me whenever the other stuff neared the edge and where to target the starter with the fork. It's a matter of comfort and confidence that we demonstrate at such events. Of course, the people around us matters too. It can definitely benefit practicing good eating habits and developing confidence. My bad - I haven't really done so. Raju ji, just my opinion, why should there be a special plate for you at home? I agree eating with hands is desireable for the Indian food that's ok but why a special kind of plate?? [AI] Delhi High Court: Stalker told to supply room-freshener, deo to school for blind
Hindustan Times New Delhi, September 18, 2013 In an unusual order, the Delhi High Court has asked a Gurgaon-based perfume manufacturer who constantly stalked and tried to molest his former employee to supply room fresheners and deodorants to a school for blind children free of cost for a year. http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/NewDelhi/Stalker-told-to-supply-room-freshener-deo-to-school-for-blind/Article1-1123573.aspx The court on Tuesday allowed his plea for quashing the FIR against him only after he agreed to this condition. He had approached the court to get the charges quashed after he settled the matter out-of-the-court with the girl after paying her Rs. 6 lakh. The court also imposed on him a fine of Rs. 2 lakh and directed him to deposit the amount for the welfare of the Delhi High Court Lawyers’ Library and Delhi Police Welfare Society. The accused had been booked for stalking, criminal trespass and trying to disrobe a woman to outrage her modesty under the Indian Penal Code. Justice Hima Kohli issued the order after the public prosecutor Naveen Sharma urged the court to impose some conditions on him in the nature of community service for quashing the FIR. “Such allegations are on the rise. The charges are serious. Leaving them scot-free without having to do anything will send a wrong signal,” Sharma told the court. The victim contended that on June 29, 2013 the man had entered her house in RK Puram when she was alone and molested her. Re: [AI] 30-yr-old deaf dumb, blind woman raped in Dindori
Don't know how controversial my point would be. But I can't resist putting it across. We often see articles by researchers describing how disabled are perceived as asexual. On the other hand, we often see disabled women being sexually exploited either by force or otherwise. if disabled are perceived asexual, how are they becoming victims of such attacks? And when they are being exploited , just like any other women, how can one say that they are perceived asexual? However, my point is not to shift the focus in the current case to academics. This is another case of extreme brutalness. Considering the helplessness of the victim in resisting the attack, her inability to call for rescue, the trauma she would be undergoing, etc., etc., the accused should be given a sentence nothing less than that given in case of Nirbaya, if proven to be truth. Re: [AI] 30-yr-old deaf dumb, blind woman raped in Dindori
very rightly said vamshi jee. and in fact the act of rape itself is a process of objectifying the woman. to make her devoid of all form of human-ness, or feeling. handicapped or not. so its basically the feminity that is being targetted. so being feminine, is the 1st level of weakness, and being handicapped/ physically or mentally chalenged is even greater weakness, and hence the easier target. i dont know if your aware, but women themselves r considerred by and large A-sexual. in the sense that, they r considered to have sex as a duty or an obligation towards their husbands. in a lot of cities in india, women have never ever experienced sex as a form of pleasure. i know of a survey conducted in which most women dont even know what it is, to have an orgasm or a climax. most women dont even remove all their clothes while having sex, and just get used by their husbands and then get back to their household work. u may be surprised but in most parts of india this is still the case. so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise, this kind of hipocracy with regard to chalanged women, because after all, they r only women. and hence an object of gratification to be used and thrown. Re: [AI] 30-yr-old deaf dumb, blind woman raped in Dindori
Once I asked one of my lawyer friends, If a victim is Deaf/dumb/blind how Court will ascertain the identity of assailant?? She said: if 'victim's hymen is ruptured due to vaginal penetration then DNA can prove the culpability of an accused. But I wonder, what if assailant perpetrates all barbaric crimes, except vaginal penetration, then should he be scot-free? I request people in Madhya Pradesh please come in unison and pressurise the district officials to speed up the hunt to knab the accused. This case is just a glairing manifestation of of how someone's helplessness motivates assailant to atac her for 'carnal' pleasure. Vamshi sir The fact is, no man can ever know whether a child is his. A woman knows a child is hers, but a man can never know whether it is his, not even with a DNA test. A DNA test can only tell you if the child is not yours, but if your DNA matches, it only indicates 'a high statistical probability' that it is your child. As they say, 'Motherhood is a biological fact, fatherhood is a sociological fiction.' (Nevidita Menon, Seeing Like A Feminist p 10). It is this knowledge that creates permanent anxiety for patriarchy, an anxiety that requires women's sexuality to be strictly policed. Time has come we should react rather than mere sitting reading and forgetting such incidents as news. On 9/19/13, Vamshi. G gvamsh...@gmail.com wrote: Don't know how controversial my point would be. Re: [AI] decent lunch etiquettes for person with visual impairment
Hello to all, Sharing a nice article on the topic. This is becoming an acute debate not only in visually-impaired community, but among sighted fokes also. Read on. January 17, 2012 Mind Your Manners: Eat With Your HandsBy SARAH DiGREGORIO JULIE SAHNI vividly remembers the first time she had to eat with utensils. Ms. Sahni, a New York-based cookbook author and cooking teacher, grew up in India eating the traditional way, with her right hand. Then, in college, she won a dance competition that would take her to Europe. How, she wondered, would she eat? The answer was a three-day immersion course in Western dining etiquette, which progressed from soup (don’t let the spoon clatter on the bowl) to green beans (spear them without sending them into your neighbor’s lap) and finally a slippery hard-boiled egg. Ms. Sahni, 66, mastered the knife and fork, but she has never really liked them. “Eating with the hands evokes great emotion,” she said. “It kindles something very warm and gentle and caressing. Using a fork is unthinkable in traditional Indian eating. It is almost like a weapon.” Eating with the hands is common in many areas of the world, including parts of Asia and much of Africa and the Middle East. But until recently, you would have been hard-pressed to find many restaurants in the United States — especially those with $20 or $30 entrees — where digging in manually was encouraged. Now, several high-profile chefs are asking diners to get their hands dirty, in the belief that it heightens the sensual connection to food and softens the formality of fine dining. When the chef Roy Choi surveys the busy dining room of A-Frame, his restaurant in Culver City, Calif., only one thing can dampen his mood: cutlery. “I see people cutting kalbi ribs like a steak, and it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard,” he said. A-Frame, whose eclectic menu Mr. Choi says was inspired by Hawaiian cuisine, is utensils optional. Though a basket of silverware is provided at each table, when the grilled pork chop or market salad arrives, servers advise customers that they’ll be missing out if they pick up a fork. “Then there are a lot of questions like ‘Am I really supposed to?’ and ‘Is there something else I need?’ ” Mr. Choi said. “But the moment we answer ‘yes’ and ‘no,’ people usually just go for it.” He had thought he might have to provide finger bowls, as many restaurants do in other countries, but hands-on eating proved to be much neater than expected. “You eat with conviction and passion when using your hands,” Mr. Choi said. “I hope that people let their guard down and throw out some of the rules we have regarding etiquette and connect like animals.” Etiquette, as a matter of fact, is central to most traditions of hand-to-mouth eating; the artfulness and ritual of the practice is part of what people love about it. Hand-washing often comes first. In Muslim communities, a prayer of thanks comes next. Only then can one reach in — usually with just the right hand — to eat. And dining with the hands is not necessarily easy: in some regions, including parts of India, it is most polite to use your thumb, pointer and middle finger, and to let only the first two joints of those fingers touch the food. Details differ from place to place, but often rice or flatbread is used to ferry food to the mouth — think of Indian roti and naan, Ethiopian injera or Middle Eastern pita. Central and Southern Africans pound root vegetables or corn into starchy mashes like fufu or ugali; you’re meant to pull off a bite-size ball and use it as an edible scoop. Ms. Sahni refuses to eat Indian food with a knife and fork, even in the most formal South Asian restaurants in New York. “I don’t care if I’m all dressed up, if everyone else is eating with a knife and fork, if the wine pairing is $80,” she said. “It’s essential.” When she reaches in with her right hand, others are often happy to follow suit. But it wasn’t always that way. She remembers an Indian restaurant in Manhattan that, in the 1970s, had unofficial sections for Indians and non-Indians. She says the owners explained that Indians didn’t want non-Indians to see them eating with their hands and that Westerners didn’t want to see it, either. Today, the writer Amitav Ghosh says he doesn’t go to Indian restaurants in London and New York because eating with hands is discouraged. “They regard this essential aspect of the cuisine with a kind of embarrassment,” he said. In the United States, most run-of-the-mill restaurants, with the exception of Ethiopian spots, do not forbid the practice, but do not encourage it, either. One Manhattan restaurant that does encourage it is Tulsi, Hemant Mathur’s upscale Indian outpost in Midtown. Upon delivering dishes like goat curry with roti or stewed chickpeas with puffy bread, servers tell patrons they are best eaten with the hands. At the New York restaurants Fatty Crab and Fatty ’Cue, the chef, Zakary Pelaccio, provides silverware but hopes that the

Re: [AI] decent lunch etiquettes for person with visual impairment
Thank you Akhilesh for sharing this prioritising 'hands over spoon' piece... Blind friendly, I say. Finally, food should go to the stomach/intestine via mouth it doesn't matter with spoon or hands. But one thing matters, one should use the tool which suits him/her best. And If you follow mixed method like Indian mixed Economy policy, then you are receptive in the 21st global market. On 9/19/13, akhilesh akhil.akhi...@gmail.com wrote: Hello to all, Sharing a nice article on the topic. [AI] Wheelchair users storm city hall, demand access to voting booths
Linda Gauthier led a group of protesters at Montreal City Hall CTV Montreal Published Tuesday, September 17, 2013 8:53AM EDT Last Updated Tuesday, September 17, 2013 8:54AM EDT People who use wheelchairs are demanding the city of Montreal respect their right to vote on election day. http://montreal.ctvnews.ca/wheelchair-users-storm-city-hall-demand-access-to-voting-booths-1.1458180#ixzz2fL6rgmIi About 40 people stormed into a city council meeting on Monday to demand the city make sure they are able to vote. Linda Gauthier was one of the protesters who says that voting in municipal elections is often difficulty. Photos Linda Gauthier, a wheelchair user, is the president of the Regroupement des activistes pour l'inclusion au Quebec (RAPLIQ) They say they took all the measures for people with disability. You can vote at home, you can vote on the web if you want, but I like to go to vote there. There's a special something when you go to vote, said Gauthier. She said many polling stations are not accessible and even if they have been adapted they might not be as safe and secure as they should be. We went on the moon. I think they could build ramps, said Gauthier. Gauthier, who is the president of the Regroupement des activistes pour l'inclusion au Quebec (RAPLIQ), has become a strong advocate for accessibility because when she last tried to vote in a municipal election she went to what was supposed to be an accessible polling station. When she arrived she discovered a 10-cm step which was impossible for her wheelchair to mount. I asked for accommodation, I asked them to bring a desk outside, they didn't want to do that, said Gauthier. She filed a complaint with Quebec's Human Rights Commission and won. Human rights advocate Fo Niemi said it was a significant decision. It's a very important decision that the Human Rights Commission handed down requiring the city of Montreal and the provincial Ministry of Municipal Affairs to change the law and to ensure that people with disabilities, limited mobility have equal access to voting booths on voting days, said Niemi. Gauthier points out she pays the same taxes as everyone else, and has the same rights and responsibilities, including voting. I think that it's very important that the city of Montreal live up to it's legal as well as moral obligation, said Gauthier. -- Avinash Shahi M.Phil Research Scholar Centre for The Study of Law and Governance Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi India Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe.
