This has been our understanding so far. Now that the NVDA itself comes
bundled with Eloquence, shouldn't we treat it something official? At
least,

NVDA 2014.2 is packaged with with Eloquence by default. We really don't
know

the intricacies and the latest developments. What we know for long is
that

Eloquence is owned by the FreedomScientific, but there seem to be
interesting moves on this front in the recent past. Can anybody closely
involved with the NVDA development shed some light on thisc ' ; please?

[AI] SBI talking ATMs- search filter available

State Bank of India - India’s largest bank has now provided talking ATM
locator on its website.

https://www.sbi.co.in/user.htm?action=atmlocator#

Visit link - View Talking ATM's

In a new window please select a state from the first drop down, district
from second drop down to view the SBI Talking ATMs addresses in a format
sr. no. and branch details. Address, city and pin code details are
displayed after a query for selected state and district.

However they have not provided info on total talking ATMs and last update
date of talking ATMs addresses on the site. Previously they provided an
excel sheet with total 3118 talking ATMs addresses.

A good step by SBI to provide a search filter on its site.

an exam such as this on a working day is completely senseless, since
quite a few people who are already working also appear for such exams.
So I would please like any information in this regard, and whether or

[AI] Karnataka: '1, 000 visually-impaired students to get free laptops' By Nagesh Prabhu

2014-06-01 Thread avinash shahi
This is a splended move indeed.
But one worry, this announcement should not only remain on paper so
guys and girls along with NGOs in Karnataka need to follow it up.
And the best part about this news item its on the Front Page.

Welcome scheme:Visually-impaired students need all the help they can
get in their pursuit for higher education.-- File Photo: K. Murali
Kumar In a move to encourage visually-impaired students to opt for
higher education, the State government has decided to distribute
laptops free of cost to such students of government, aided and unaided
educational institutions in the State.
http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/1000-visuallyimpaired-students-to-get-free-laptops/article6071139.ece
In the first phase, laptops equipped with screen readers would be
given to 1,000 students of Class 10 and above, including arts,
science, engineering and other courses. Each laptop costs Rs. 40,000
and they are equipped with screen readers with a voice that
synthesises keyboard commands into human-sounding speech. The most
popular screen-access programme is JAWS for Windows, officials said.
JAWS provides key command equivalents to mouse functions to enable
students to navigate their laptops, read documents and browse the
internet.

The scheme would cost the government Rs. 4 crore. An order on
distribution of laptops would be issued soon, officials in the
Department for the Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior
Citizens told The Hindu on Saturday. Family income is not a criterion
for selection of students.

A beneficiaries' list would be prepared based on the names of students
recommended by principals of the colleges and headmasters of schools.
Deputy Directors of the department in each district will scrutinise
the names and submit them to the Director of the department, said
officials.

A total 13.24 lakh persons are living with seven types of disabilities
in Karnataka as per the 2011Census. Only those who have more than 40
per cent disability are eligible for scholarships and other subsidy
benefits.

There are 2.64 lakh visually-impaired persons in Karnataka. About
2,000 visually-impaired students are studying in various government
schools, colleges, aided colleges and private colleges, officials
said.

The government has been running special schools for the visually
impaired in Gulbarga, Mysore, Davangere and Hubli in which there are
151 students.

How they fared

A total of 225 visually-impaired students scored more than 60 per cent
in the 2014 SSLC examinations. Of them, 31 passed with distinction,
and seven scored between 90 and 95 per cent.

A total of 708 SSLC students with various disabilities scored more
than 60 per cent in 2014.

225 visually-impaired students scored more than 60 p.c. in SSLC exams

Of them, 31 passed with distinction, seven scored between 90 and 95 p.c.

[AI] Problem in Tapin Radio

2014-06-01 Thread Ashik
Dear Friends,

I have recently switched to Windows7. Tapin Radio worked perfectly in XP, but
in Windows7, there are problems. It has got installed fine, but I can not find
stations. When I press Enter on any options in the Search Menu, it does not
proceed. For example, if I press enter on the option Country, there should
appear the list of countries, but it doesn't. It has happened in the computer
of my friend as well. Please guide me. If the version 1.58 is not compatible
with Windows7, please provide me the compatible one.
One more thing. Somebody says that redio sure is equally good. If it works well
with Windows7, please provide it to me as well.

Thanking you in advance.

Re: [AI] Why such discrimination by UPSC

2014-06-01 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafel
Yes friends please do join me. As I will be challenging this
notification very soon. My one of the remedies claimed will be to
provide question paper in accessible format with screenreader if
demanded in soft copy and compensatory time for 20 minutes per hour.
And of course to provide minimum 3% quota on total advertised
vacancies.
The notification is clearly in contradiction of last October 8th
pronouncement of hon'ble Supreme Court. NFB, can u help us please once
again?

On 5/31/14, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote:

Totally blind which is referred in the notification as (B), can be
inducted only in Indian administrative service, Railways and in
Foreign service. To my astonishment, He/she/third gender can't go in
to Indian corporate legal service. Thanks to identification of posts
(perogative of Department of Personnel and Training), continues to
exclude blind from being appointed in many pristigious services.

Let me highlight few serious anomalies in the Notification
 1) Out of 1291 expected posts Only 26 will be reserved forPH out of
which 1 will be given to B (blind p 1).

 2) Providing scribe to a blind candidate or allowing him/ her to
bring his/ her own scribe, suitable modification has been made in the
online application programme to get the information at the time of the
initial online application itself, and not get it later as per the
 existing practice p 3).

 3) Then I visited UPSC's website to ascertain the hidden intention of
UPSC, I Loged in and pretended to apply for the post to obtain scribe
performa for the blind, and read what it demands?
Educational qualification of scribe as brought by the candidate
should not be higher than graduation. Can somebody show them Office
Memoorandum issued by MSJE in Feb 2013, please?

 4) As far as Main exams are concerned, Candidates must write the
papers in their own hand. In no circumstances, will they be allowed
the help of a scribe to write the answers for them. However, blind
candidates will be allowed to write the examination with the help of a
scribe.Blind candidates will also be allowed an extra time of thirty
minutes at each paper @ ten minutes per hour.
(ii) An extra time of twenty minutes per hour shall be permitted for
the candidates with locomotor disability and cerebral palsy where
dominant (writing) extremity is affected to the extent of slowing the
performance of function (minimum of 40% impairment) in the Civil
Services (Main) Examination only. However, no scribe shall be
permitted to such candidates. p 5.

Hope above highlighted anomalies help candidates to fight for their
rights before it is too late.
 All the best

Here in Kolkata they don't even allow candidates' own scribe. This is
strange. Other organisations don't care about scribe. But SSC is
determined

to supply scribe.

Hello,

I heard that vh candidates were not allowed to use Jaws or NVDA at the
type test held by Staff Selection Commission in Kolkata last year. I
don't understand how they expect us to type correctly without any
speech

support, either at the test or at the office. What is the situation
elsewhere?

Subject: Re: [AI] Why such discrimination by UPSC

There are several paragraphs in the notification which put blind
candidates at the disadvantage, Serious legal advocacy coupled with
mass protest at DOPT Office recquired. Who will take the lead? of
Course aspiring candidates should come in front...

I went to CCPD through Subhash sir, the notice from CCPD office was
served to Registrar General, but no outcome. This time we got only
permission to use our own scribe, barring to educational
qualification, and extra time upto 20 minutes each hour. There was no
much time left to take recourse of judicial machinery. Fortunately if
I am promoted to the next stage of the exam, definitly I will file a
petition to resolve this issue for greater end.
So far as the extra time in UPSC is concern, they haven't change
 anything.
Please refer to para (iv) of the notification:
Each paper will be of two hours duration. Blind candidates will
however, be allowed an extra time of twenty minutes for each paper.
UPSC is really a unruly hourse! Isn't it? Sorry.
