Re: [AI] Need software for calling from laptop.

2019-08-29 Thread john clayton
Hi,
If as you say you are looking for an alternative due to horrid network
coverage where you are at, the least you would need to achieve what you are
wanting to do would be a decent internet connection instead.
If the area you are in offers a decent internet connection, then as others
have said here you could use skype calling service to make calls, you would
need a subscription, though.
VOIP calls being blocked is new to me, but something our government is
certainly capable of given their track record so far.
 Cheers.

[AI] Announcement from Vision Aid - Programming in Python - call for applications.

2019-08-29 Thread Jayanthi
Announcing – An Exciting Program from Vision-Aid

Programming in Python - Classes for the VI and the blind.

Applications open for Fall Semester 2019

Limited Enrollment. Apply soon!
Application closing date:

10th September 2019

Overview

Are you a visually impaired or blind person who wants to learn computer
programming? Vision-Aid is announcing a new semester set to start this
fall (September 2019). After successfully teaching Python programming for
the visually impaired over the last three years, we are thrilled to offer
an even more comprehensive program this year. There have been changes in
the program and admissions policy compared to previous years. Please make
sure you go through this message carefully.

About the Course

Students are introduced to computer science and programming concepts using
Python, one of the most popular languages for getting started with computer
programming. Students selected for the Vision-Aid program will learn from
experts in the field using the best online learning resources. The classes
will be offered over SKYPE/ZOOM. Each class will have two or more
students. The course will have a midterm and final exam. Students who
complete the course will be awarded a Vision-Aid certificate in Python
Programming.

Why you should join?

We believe in training the students such that they can become lifelong
learners and reach their highest potential. Vision-Aid students have earned
MOOC certificates from MIT, Stanford and the University of Michigan.

Some have also secured excellent advanced learning and employment
opportunities. Please view the following Videos of some of our Vision- Aid
star students – Adithi and Bharghav
.

Opportunity to participate in Hackathon

Qualifying students who successfully complete the course are also invited
to attend a hackathon for the visually impaired. This event is organized by
iStem, Vision-Aid and other leading organizations in India. All travel and
lodging expenses for the conference will be borne by Vision-Aid and
sponsors, and students will have a unique opportunity to meet with top IT
companies in Bangalore, the technology hub of India, to understand
employment opportunities and to gain valuable team work experience.

Schedule:

The Fall session class begins by the last week of September 2019 and ends
by mid February 2020. The course will run for around 20 weeks. Depending
on the pace of learning, students are usually known to complete the course
within 15 to 16 weeks.

Cost

Vision-Aid is pleased to offer this course free of cost to the students.
However, students are required to have their own laptops/computers and a
good internet connection. Please note that this semester we have waived the
advance refundable deposit requirement which was required in the past.

The mandatory prerequisites for applying for this course are:

•Desktop or laptop computer with reliable internet connectivity.

•Motivation and dedication.

•Discipline for focused learning and commitment to spend minimum of 10
hours per week.

•Commitment to pursue higher level courses in Python for at least two
years to become job worthy for IT industries, for which Vision Aid will
provide mentorship.

•Good communication skills.

Additional requirements that provide an advantage to applicants.

1.Exposure to programming concepts

2. Familiarity with other computer languages like C, C++

Admission criteria

   -

Applications duly filled and submitted will be shortlisted based on
   prerequisites and desirable factors.
   -

Shortlisted candidates will go through a screening test for logical
   reasoning and basic mathematics .
   -

Successful candidates from the screening test will be personally
interviewed over the Zoom meeting app.
   -

Candidates who are selected after the interviews will be enrolled into
   the course.

Please note that this is an intense programming course. It will require a
minimum of 10-15 hours of dedicated study and homework each week. Students
who do not put in the required time and effort may find it very difficult
to complete the course and master the concepts. Therefore, regular
attendance and time commitment are very important. A student should apply
to the course only if they are sure they can invest the needed time for the
entire duration of the course. Once admitted a student MUST commit to
attending all classes regularly without exception. Any student who misses
more than 2 classes without prior written permission from the program
coordinator may be automatically dropped from the course and asked to
reapply for the next round of classes. In that case, someone on the
wait-list will be allotted their seat.

How to apply

Please fill out the form below.

Note that the demand for the course in prior semesters has been strong, so
apply soon to avoid the waiting list.

Re: [AI] Divya Nayan - A Device for text reading - Registration.

2019-08-29 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi all,

The OrCam does not offer anything that a mobile phone cannot offer as far
as I can tell from reading. See its manual at
https://www.orcam.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/orcam_englishuserguide_web.
pdf

The main thing with the OrCam is the form factor. It is tiny and can be
mounted on a pair of glasses.

I read the FAQ of Divya Nayan. It is not a camera but a contact scanner so
may work better with hard copy books. As always, much depends on your use
case.
Any camera based solution is more versatile as in you can try reading LCD
displays and a variety of other things like sign boards. However, a contact
scanner may do better with print. Camera based solutions can also handle
print but you need to account for lighting and the position of the lens
with respect to the print.

I would use both solutions in different cases. I would use a camera based
solution to look for signage or to read my computer's screen if it does not
boot as well as with apps like be my eyes. A scanner solution would be
better in offices where reading accuracy is crucial or in situations where
cameras are restricted.

The last thing to remember here is that camera based solutions need to be
directed at print. Some specialized document reading applications like
seeing ai do give you feedback about how much the camera can see. The OrCam
as far as I know also gives you similar feedback but I am not sure. The
vOICe running on Android is the only app I know of that will help you direct
your camera at the object of interest such as a sign board. You can then use
its soundscapes to align the camera and wait for the built-in OCR to engage.

Pranav

I completely agree with me Ajay. Let’s start motivating students in our
individual capacities, and join hands to take it to the next level by
spreading the wor at undergraduate level by giving lecture and sharing
success stories.

Re: [AI] Mobile scanning stand recommendations and thoughts on ID Pro

2019-08-29 Thread Ajay Minocha
Hi,

PC still does a better job at overall user experience.

What I suggest:

1. Get a scanner with ADF i.e. HP Scanjet 2000, costs around 25k,
comes with accessible scanning software. I have just bought it from my
sister and quite amazed at its speed and accuracy.
2. Use ABBYY findreader for OCR and save the converted files to HTM /
epub instead of docx, should solve Word's slowing down issue.

HTH,
Ajay

Re: [AI] lack of students with blindness entering Top B school

2019-08-29 Thread Ajay Minocha
Hi Anirudh,

Agree with you 100%, we have to be the trailblazers who can change the
so-called education system so that the future generation gets a
level-playing field.

Till the time it is done, I think a more practical approach for an
aspirant is to hone those skills through private studies/practice.

While I say this, I can sight a lot of examples including myself who
completed the necessary SSC/HSC sylabus even after completing their
graduation just to fulfill that void which was created by the
education system.

Completely my personal views but I think we put too much of our energy
in blame game and procrastination instead of finding a way-out.

Cheers,
Ajay

Re: [AI] Suggestions requested for a bluetooth keyboard for mobile

2019-08-29 Thread Zujar Shabbir Kanchwala
I suggest you look out for a Bluetooth keypad that supports Android
only. I have one from UnTech that supports Android, IOS as well as
Windows. However it doesn't have a method of opening the Apps drawer
or the Apps menu on the Android device which is a little missed out
feature. Besides the number pad on top function key functions wll on
Android device only when the digits are pressed in combination with
the Function (fn) key.

Try out a folding keypad for compactness keeping in mind that the keys
are smaller on compact/folding keypads.

Hello access Indians
I am writing this mail to draw your attention to the inaccessibility
of internet banking of SBI and Yono app. As SBI have upgraded both
their internet banking user interface and Yono app, in their internet
banking portal they have added the option of visual captcha. Despite
the fact that there is an option of audio captcha, it is of
practically no use as it is quite often delayed and too low to be
audible. I suggest that there should be an option of logging in via
OTP either by phone or by email.
Similarly in Yono app if we have to login via MPin, considering the
security concerns the digits on the virtual numeric keypad comes
randomly rather than coming in ascending order. I suggest that they
should leave an option in the settings for the users to decide if they
want digits in a numeric keypad in ascending order or in a random way?
I raised the above mentioned two concerns on the portal of customer
management services, rather than going to the top authorities, it went
to the bank manager of my home branch. Since these top level decisions
fall outside his domain, raising these issues on CMS of SBI did no
good. Then I sent a message to SBI on twitter. I am still awaiting
response. It is my humble request if there is any top official from
SBI in the list, kindly take it up or just as some of us sensitised
PayTm, we need to take this issue up with the management of SBI too.
I shall be eagerly waiting to hear from you on this.

[AI] Inaccessibility of SBI internet banking & Yono app.

2019-08-29 Thread Abhay Kanwar
Sincerely
