Namaste friends. please note, that I am not talking about talkback gestures
in this tutorial at all. Have you got bord of keep pressing and pressing
back, home and recent apps navigation buttons for doing small tasks, such
as back, home and recent apps? As we all know, that we have to press these
buttons multiple times for such a small tasks with talkback, and it is very
time consuming. Isn’t it? Now here is the solution. We can use navigation
gestures instead of buttons for back, home and recent apps. Believe me,
these gestures are very handy to use. Surely you will love it!

[AI] Union Bank conducted accessibility capacity building program

2023-03-27 Thread Prashant Naik
Dear All

Awareness on accessibility and assistive technology is one of the important
pillars of the accessibility journey for an organisation.

In the services sector like banking this becomes more important as the
industry is ever changing to meet diverse customer needs through digital
means.

The Union Learning Academy, Digital Transformation conducted an awareness
session titled “Accessibility Matters” for app/website developers, testers
and related officials on 20th March 2023.

The session was conducted by Saidarshan Bhagat from C-DAC Mumbai who is an
expert in the domain and was part of the committee on BIS Standards on ICT
accessibility. This special capacity building program was supported by the
Team Union Access, Union Bank’s flagship initiative on digital
accessibility improvements.

The leadership at Union Bank of India is embedding accessibility and
inclusivity in its core philosophy. "Accessibility by design is the best
practice" a key concept shared by Shri Anil Kuril, Chief Technical Officer,
Union Bank of India in his keynote speech during valedictory session.

Thanks & Regards
Prashant Naik

[AI] A Tale Of Two Ereaders: The Good News Launched By NLS

2023-03-27 Thread dipendra.lists
The article below is in the latest edition of Access Braille Magazine. This is
a perfect example of how bulk purchase of a product by the government can bring
cost down for everyone and get a product in hands of thousands of users. I can
only imagine and dream that one day Indian government may decide to put 1
braille displays in the hands of users in one year. We can drive the
specifications and get the RBD of our own specifications and requirement at an
affordable cost. This is what NLS did.

https://afb.org/aw/24/3/18242

A Tale Of Two Ereaders: The Good News Launched By NLS
Deborah Kendrick
For most of us, March 2020 will always evoke the memory of lockdown,
quarantines, masks and all of the other traumatizing changes wrought by the
onset of the Coronavirus pandemic. But there were positive events taking place
in March 2020 as well, and the one that stamped its most indelible memory on a
few of us doing work for the National Library Service for the Blind and Print
Disabled was the launch of the NLS Braille eReader Pilot.
A Little History
In the summer of 2013, a conference was held in Watertown, Mass. that would
bring significant changes to the delivery of braille materials by the NLS. The
Braille Summit was a think tank of sorts, bringing together braille teachers,
braille readers, braille producers and other lovers of braille to dig in and
brainstorm the future and promotion of braille. One significant idea that came
from that intense conversation was that putting a refreshable braille device in
the hands of all braille readers would encourage the reading of braille and
provide braille material in a more equitable fashion to blind people. Rather
than long waiting lists for a finite number of braille copies of a single book,
an infinite number of readers could download that book to read and choose their
own time for reading it. Many braille readers had been downloading books for
years by 2013, but refreshable braille displays are costly and were therefore
not available to all.
Fast forward just five years to an amazing appropriation by the United States
Congress, a one-time appropriation of five million dollars in order for NLS to
launch the eReader pilot. Bids went out. Two products were selected, and in
March 2020, seven of us began putting these machines through their paces.
Spearheaded by Tamara Rorie, head of the Patron Engagement Section of the
National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, the pilot is now a
program, the two eReaders have been distributed to 40 of the 50 states, and the
plan is for all states to have received their units by the end of 2023.
Two Machines, One Set of Functions
Certainly, there are differences between the two eReaders. They look and feel
distinctly different from one another. There are some distinctions in features
and performance. The important takeaway, however, is that they are both
powerful machines designed to do the same job: Display and download books and
magazines from the National library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled.
And both do that job extremely well! One is from Zoomax; the other is from
HumanWare. I'll first provide an overview of their physical appearances, and
then a more detailed analyses of features and functions.
Physical Description
Both NLS eReaders are small enough to fit into most typical backpacks, tote
bags, or purses. The Zoomax measures 8 inches wide, 5 inches deep, and 1.5
inches tall. The HumanWare eReader is from one-half inch to one inch smaller in
every dimension. Both machines have 20 braille cells, with 20 accompanying
cursor routing buttons. Both have long battery life. Both are charged via a
USB-C port. Both have powerful wifi and Bluetooth capabilities. Both have 16GB
internal memory, and both are designed to accommodate additional storage via SD
card and/or USB flash drive.
Each eReader ships with the following accessories: a custom carrying case and
lanyard; a USB-C cable and power block for charging; a USB-A cable for
connecting an NLS-style cartridge, and a hardcopy braille user's guide.
HumanWare
The HumanWare eReader has the eight-dot Perkins-style keyboard (the six braille
keys plus Backspace and Enter), on top, in a slightly curved arrangement
believed to be more ergonomic. Directly in front of the keys are the 20 cursor
routing buttons (which feel like large round dots), Followed by the 20 8-dot
braille cells. Finally, at the front of the top surface, at its center, are two
space bars.
On the front edge of the unit are four evenly spaced rectangular thumb keys,
with one round Selector button in the middle. In addition to acting as the four
arrows found in a cursor cross on a qwerty keyboard, these keys are used for
panning backward and forward, executing navigational commands, and more.
Patrons who have used other HumanWare braille products will recognize the thumb
keys as a brand standard.
On the left edge are the USB-C port, power b

thanks, Ajay. I am waiting to see where it goes. I have lodged a

I will keep everyone here posted.
I will also request everyone to please register complaints against any

Entrepreneur-student makes ‘green’ pens, helps visually impaird eke
   out a living

KOLKATA: A polytechnic student who had lost two academic years to
financial constraints during the pandemic is going  the green way to
continue with his studies and, at the same  time, helping
visually-impaired people make a living by selling eco-friendly ballpoint
pens he makes at home. He is  also financing the studies of his sister
who will sit for Madhyamik next year.

Subhajeet Saha (22) from Noapara, a diploma student of electronics and
communications at Shree Ramkrishna Institute of Science and Technology,
Baruipur, has garnered attention from social organisations and
environment enthusiasts for the paper- pens filled with seeds of
saplings he makes. He also launched paper pencils and bamboo
toothbrushes under his brand — Rohit Ecofriendly.
Saha has teamed up with around 100 visually-impaired hawkers, including
10 women, to sell these pens on trains, buses, and on the streets.
These hawkers belong to 35 NGOs that also help Saha sell his green
products at various events.
“The process of making the pens is simple. It takes a few seconds to
wrap a refill with art paper and put a seed at the rear. At least six or
seven pens can be made from one art paper. I have engaged around 50
women from NGOs to make the pens. My mother also helps out,” said Saha,
who is now contemplating making fountain pens with bamboo, and looking
for a deal with nib manufacturers.

Subject: Re: [AI] w.r.t. Railway concession certificate and Divyangjan photo Id,

Hi Suresh ji,
The link to apply is:
https://divyangjanid.indianrail.gov.in/

Needed documents are:
* Filled Railway concession certificate by the Medical physician in the
specified format provided in the log in page of the site.
* photo
* Disability certificate,
* Aadhaar card/ photo id, address proof, age proof.

All these should be self attested and scanned within 600 KB per document.

First we need to register our mobile number by clicking into the form through
the register new user.
Provide all the necessary details like name, e-mail id, mobile number, aadhaar
number (not mandated) and create account.
The account would be valid only for one month.

After creating the account, you can open the same link once again and type your
registered mobile number on which you would receive OTP automatically once you
enter the number.
Enter the capcha which is accessible through google description reader option.
Then log in.

You would find two links. One would be the Railway concession certificate
format which you need to obtain filled by the Medical officer.
Another link would be for applying for the card.
Provide all the details such as the uploading of the scanned documents,
address, doctor's name, register number of the doctor, date of issue of the
certificate, and name of the institute that provided the certificate.
Then submit the form and wait till you get sms in your registered mobile as
card generated.
I received in 20 days...
Hope I have clarified...
Thank you,

[AI] At Apple, Rare Dissent Over a New Product: Interactive Goggles

2023-03-27 Thread avinash shahi
When Apple held a corporate retreat in California’s Carmel Valley
about five years ago to discuss its next major product, Jony Ive, its
longtime design chief, captivated a room of the company’s 100 top
executives with a concept video as polished as an Apple commercial.

The video showed a man in a London taxi donning an augmented reality
headset and calling his wife in San Francisco. “Would you like to come
to London?” he asked, two people who saw the video said. Soon, the
couple were sharing the sights of London through the husband’s eyes.

The video excited executives about the possibilities of Apple’s next
business-altering device: a headset that would blend the digital world
with the real one.

But now, as the company prepares to introduce the headset in June,
enthusiasm at Apple has given way to skepticism, said eight current
and former employees, who requested anonymity because of Apple’s
policies against speaking about future products. There are concerns
about the device’s roughly $3,000 price, doubts about its utility and
worries about its unproven market.
That dissension has been a surprising change inside a company where
employees have built devices — from the iPod to the Apple Watch — with
the single-mindedness of a moon mission.

Some employees have defected from the project because of their doubts
about its potential, three people with knowledge of the moves said.
Others have been fired over the lack of progress with some aspects of
the headset, including its use of Apple’s Siri voice assistant, one
person said.
Even leaders at Apple have questioned the product’s prospects. It has
been developed at a time when morale has been strained by a wave of
departures from the company’s design team, including Mr. Ive, who left
Apple in 2019 and stopped advising the company last year.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on the company’s plans for
future products.

Apple’s headset is considered a bellwether for virtual and augmented
reality. For more than a decade, tech leaders have been hyping it as
the next wave of computing after the smartphone. Apple’s chief
executive, Tim Cook, told university students last year that in the
near future “you’ll wonder how you lived your life without augmented
reality, just like today you wonder: How did people like me grow up
without the internet?”
But the road to deliver augmented reality has been littered with
failures, false starts and disappointments, from Google Glass to Magic
Leap and from Microsoft’s HoloLens to Meta’s Quest Pro. Apple is
considered a potential savior because of its success combining new
hardware and software to create revolutionary devices. Still, the
challenges are daunting.

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has plowed billions of dollars into
trying to build a virtual reality business. The experience has been
humbling. It has sold about 20 million of its $400 Quest 2 headsets
since 2020 and recently cut the price of the Quest Pro, its premium
device, to $1,000 from $1,500 amid lackluster sales.

By comparison, Apple sells more than 200 million iPhones annually with
an average selling price of more than $800.
Unlike the iPhone, which incorporated many existing technologies,
virtual reality is requiring Apple and others to design new chips and
wearable displays, said Matthew Ball, author of “The Metaverse: And
How It Will Revolutionize Everything.” “The difficulty of the problem
has been far greater than anyone expected,” he added.
Uncertainty about the potential of Apple’s project has led some people
who have worked on it to speculate that the company could delay its
release, especially in light of the shaky economy, these people said.
The company has postponed other new products in the past, including
AirTags, the coin-size location tracking devices, which Apple withheld
for more than a year as it addressed privacy issues. But at this
point, headset manufacturing is underway for a planned reveal in June,
the people said.

Apple is projected to ship fewer than 500,000 headsets in a year,
according to Counterpoint Research, a market research firm. By
comparison, the company was expected to ship about 40 million Apple
Watches after its debut. The modest expectations for the headset speak
to the challenges in a category where sales declined 12 percent last
year to $1.1 billion, according to NPD Group, a market research firm.

Seeking to define a nascent market is an aberration for Apple.

“Apple is always pretty good at coming into a market when the market
is already established and changing that market,” said Carolina
Milanesi, a consumer tech analyst for the research firm Creative
Strategies. “This is not the case for Apple VR and XR. There’s still a
lot of learning.”
Some internal skeptics have questioned if the new device is a solution
in search of a problem. Unlike the iPod, which put digital songs in
people’s pockets, and the iPhone, which combined the abilities of a
music player and a phone, the headset hasn’t been driven by the sam

Re: [AI] IndiGo does it again

Hi Payal,

I can understand your situation because I had experience a similar
situation with Air India in 2018 at Netaji Subhashchandra bose Kolkata
airport. I had to shout after waiting for 20 minutes. Air India had
promised me that their representative will assist me after landing
from Banaras to Kolkata airport. But scene was different.

2023-03-27 Thread Prerna Sobti
Everyone is talking about the hi and low of their travel experiences. everyone
is taking example of Indigo and Vistara, That they were helpful and good
experiences Er lines. H however, The only time I had flown after I lost my
eyesight Voice from Delhi to Goa. And I had flown through Vistara where they
had demanded extra money when asked about facilities for disabled people at
that point of time I was not connected with this mailing list and was not aware
of anything about late blindness rights what is available what is not available
Cho I have had bad experience with the airlines which is very widely loved by
everyone. Show in the end within the community we should be supportive of each
other without finding loopholes within the community and be united.
