Re: [AI] Online promo
Greetings Rahul: About 15 years ago, there used to be a website called We The People where you could simply log in and chat with other visually impaired folks from all over the world mostly from the US. A few Access India members who are still on this list used to participate on that website and if you wanted to enter a private room, you could do that too and engage in a private conversation. No agenda was ever set during discussions and you could shoot the breeze ever which way. The website subsequently disappeared owing to a lack of funding. You could try that on Google Meet and if the numbers get too large, we can definitely explore other online options down the road. I am not voting for either a Whatsapp group or a mailing list because they are mostly static and you can't hear people talking within the primary interface. In any case, there are way too many Whatsapp groups floating around for just about everything. I encourage Access India members to participate in this discussion, especially those who were active on www.we-the-people.com. It does not hurt to try. Thoughts? Dear Friends and Supporters, As we turn the page on another year, Score Foundation stands tall, celebrating a remarkable 22 years of empowering and advocating for the people living their lives with blindness in India. Since 2002, our journey has been one of unwavering commitment to breaking down barriers and creating a world where blindness is not a limitation, but a strength waiting to be unleashed. We began by igniting a spark of information with our radio series on All India Radio, "Eyeway Yeh Hai Roshni Ka Karawan," guiding and inspiring countless individuals. We further illuminated the path with the "Nazar Ya Nazariya" TV series on Doordarshan, showcasing the vibrant lives and achievements of those who defy visual limitations. Recognizing the power of connection, we launched the national Eyeway helpdesk, becoming a trusted source of support and information for the visually challenged. We further expanded our reach with accessible communication channels like SMS and WhatsApp broadcasts, ensuring inclusivity at every step. Today, 22 years later, Score Foundation's flame burns brighter than ever. Our podcasts continue to empower and educate, while our unwavering advocacy efforts strive to create a more inclusive India where the talents and contributions of the visually challenged are not only valued but celebrated. Re: [AI]
Greetings Cauvery: I have often noticed that it is impractical to walk in a straight line shoulder-to-shoulder with the sighted individual in the middle. The hallway might be narrow in an indoor situation, there might be people walking from the direction where you are headed, or there might be way too much traffic on the street. It is best and safe, therefore, to walk one behind the other train style thus eliminating the possibility of serious mishaps. There is no loss of dignity here. If at least two of the visually impaired persons use a cane and have mobility training, the sighted guide and one visually impaired team member could lead the group with two following with their canes. The front line can not only serve as a shield but the sighted person could do a running commentary gently guiding the two behind with comments like: "Slow down" "Two steps coming up" "A slight slope ahead" And so on. I am sure you get the drift. Rajesh from Noida - Original Message - From: Cauvery Krishna To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, May 06, 2024 11:56 AM Subject: [AI] Question of dignity? Re: [AI] Using uber as a mode of transport and how to commute by rikshaw independently
Greetings Saurav: Unless there is a government mandate for all ride sharing aggregators to assist the disabled community, our struggles with public transportation will continue unabated. Try this: Put up a neatly typed notice on your college's public notice board in 15 point font saying that you would like to share a ride daily between your location and the college in both directions. Also, mention that you are willing to share the petrol expenses. Put your name and phone number at the bottom. You can also replicate this message on the college Whatsapp groups to which you belong. I can assure you that you will definitely get a few calls. Let us hope you get more than one call because if your collegemate one has no classes on a specific day, you have the option to call collegemate two or three. Another underlying advantage of this arrangement is that your collegemate will walk you up to your college's hallway. Moreover, you might make new friends and even become a part of a group with whom to hang around. Maintaining a private car and driver comes with a huge number of challenges these days not to mention the costs associated with such a solution. Personal drivers often do not show up for work when you have an urgent engagement. Thanks. I have no idea as to what went wrongg at the right times, the updates may make them inaccessible and cause you delays and all the troubles. the Indian companies do not take the accessibility seriously although there are enormous efforts from our community. they are just thick-skinned and apathetic to the blind and the disabled in plain words. Greetings yamuna: Hare Krishna! This is most interesting indeed. I have never heard of this company but will surely check them out first thing tomorrow and place an order too. I also plan to leave a review on Amazon featuring my appreciation post purchase. I also encourage others to do the same. As they say, there is strength in numbers. Hi friends, A few weeks back, my wife bought some shower gel on Amazon. Seemed like an ordinary event and I thought nothing of it. When the package arrived, my eldest son excitedly brought it to me. “Baba! Baba! Come check this out” he exclaimed as he put the bottle into my hands. Not thinking much of it I asked “What is this?” without much examination of the bottle. “sShower gel” he said, still excited. “Feel the bottle”. Somehow I still didn’t catch on, as I fingered lamely around the bottle’s edges. “Ok Nice”, I said. “Go pack this away now”. “No! Feel the face of the bottle. Feel properly.” He insisted. I now knew something was up so with more alertness I carefully examined the face of the bottle. Before I could even figure it out he exclaimed “Braille!” And he was right. Not just that, but both the front face and on the rear face had a whole lot of braille. On the front face across the short side was written in short single lines as follows: Fiama Shower Gel On the opposite face, this time along the length of the bottle was written, again in beautiful braille letters along the length of the bottle this time: Patchouli And macadamia It was uncontracted, no capitalization of letters, the dots felt somewhat faded on the plastic label, but still it was a pleasant surprise indeed. Coming to India I wasn’t sure I would ever see beautiful braille again, here in the village of Vrindavana. Just for this fact I would like to keep buying this product, to simply say thank you for remembering us on the fringes of society, while most others see us as nothing more than disabled people that might at least be able to sing for some handout. We now bought 4 bottles in total for the moment, and every morning I can’t help running my fingers over the braille when I take some out to shower my body. It just feels so warmly familiar. Just wanted to share this small yet heart-warming story of my own personal experience. With kind regards, Yamuna Jivana dasa -- Disclaimer: 1. The message received by my company is appended: Dear University of South Whales Partner, We are writing to inform you of an important update regarding the acceptance of bank statements and loan documents for students joining the University of South Wales United Kingdom in the February 2024 intake. Recently, the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has identified a concerning trend, with a high percentage of forged loan and bank statement documents originating from Axis Bank and Canara Bank. As a result, The University of South Wales has made the decision not to accept bank statements or loan documents from Axis Bank or Canara Bank for the upcoming February 2024 intake onwards. We understand the significance of this change and its potential impact on your students. To ensure a smooth transition, we are providing this notice well in advance. By doing so, we hope to give your students ample time to implement any necessary changes and switch banks in compliance with the 28-day rule required for the February intake. Re: [AI] microsoft word course for visually impaired
Dear Shahzada, I have never seen your message on Access India before and can therefore safely assume that this is your first message to the group. I will preface my observations by saying that your comments are totally uncalled for and in very poor taste indeed especially given the fact that you have never contributed to the list before. Have you written to the trainer yourself to validate his credentials? Have you communicated with the trainer to request references? Have you requested the trainer to share a review with you? I guess not. You happen to be embracing the standard dictum: Guilty unless proven innocent. Instead of hurling abuses at the trainer, it is best that you conduct your own due diligence by communicating with the trainer directly first before you misuse this national, perhaps global platform, Access India, to reveal the cantankerous side of your personality. Take some time out instead to give a positive spin on reality. Share your learning experiences with others. Be a guiding light. It is very ironic indeed that some visually impaired individuals constantly expect a free ride on products and services across the board. There is no free lunch out there and your mind set is definitely due for a transformative experience. As far as I am concerned, I have already checked out the trainer through a third party and plan to enroll with him soon for training. Just to put things in perspective for you, the going rate in Delhi for one on one computer training delivered by a sighted trainer is Rs. 800 an hour and up and not Rs. 750 for 45 days which is literally a pittance. If you find the amount excessive which by the way it is not, may I humbly urge you to please sign up and enroll with one of the dozen NGOs who offer free computer training instead of trying to discourage a fellow community member who is attempting to make an honest living. [AI] Article on Accessibility of memes from Time Magazine
Greetings All: While helping one of my students with her application for admission to Columbia University, I came across this article in Time Magazine. This article will especially interest those members who work in the field of accessibility. I have also provided the link to the article just in case you wish to explore the outbound links embedded in the article. I have read the article and find it to be most informative. This article appeared in the print version of Time Magazine lastyear. Rajesh from Noida Time Magazine URL: https://time.com/5759721/meme-accessibility-blind/ Memes Are Still Inaccessible to the Blind If you've spent a lot of time on the internet in the last decade, you might immediately recognize this description: a toddler clenches his fist in front of a determined-looking face. "Success kid" is one of the most popular online memes in history. But for the 2.2 billion people worldwide who report visual impairments or blindness, according to the World Health Organization, it is just one of thousands of images on the internet that are essentially illegible to anyone without full vision. As millions like and re-share a viral post, people with visual impairments often find themselves locked out of the discourse. "It's frustrating," says Alex Stine, an 18-year-old recent graduate of the Kentucky School for the Blind who works in website accessibility. "When [I] come across [a meme], my screen reader reads 'graphic.'" Experts who spoke with TIME say there's much more to be done to make memes universally enjoyable. The most common practice for making images accessible online is through alternate text, better known as alt-text, which are descriptions embedded within a picture file. Screen readers, software applications that translate what's happening onscreen into braille or audio, can recognize a picture's alt-text and read it back for the user. On TIME's website, for example, a picture of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 19 has alt-text that reads, "Brad Pitt grabs Jennifer Aniston's right hand, as the two face each other smiling. Pitt has the trophy he won in his right hand, while Aniston's left hand is raised." Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston attend the 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at The Shrine Auditorium on January 19, 2020 in Los Angeles, California. Emma McIntyre-Getty Images for Turner That would work for screen reading software. But consider what happens when things get meme-d: like this meme, with the photo next to a screen grab of a scene from the TV show Friends, showing Monica (Courteney Cox) opening the apartment door to find Rachel (Aniston) and Ross (David Schwimmer) in the hallway, with closed captions showing Monica's line: "I'm sorry, apparently I opened the door to the past." Without embedded alt-text, this combination of images becomes uninterpretable for those with impaired vision. Cole Gleason, a Ph.D. candidate at Carnegie Mellon University and the co-author of Making Memes Accessible, a research paper analyzing the issue, says that the more fun aspects of daily life are often left on the back burner when it comes to accessibility work. "There's a tendency in accessibility-related fields for people to focus on making the workplace accessible, and making transportation accessible, because those are daily needs," he says. "And people usually leave the recreational or silly or leisure activities to the later stages of accessibility, so humor was definitely not high on people's priority lists." It's not just about missing out on the fun of memes like " woman yelling at a cat ." "In the age of Donald Trump, memes are cultural capital. People use memes to kind of talk truth to power," says Tasha Chemel, a 34-year-old college academic coach who lives in Brookline, Mass. and is blind. "They can be cute or hilarious, but I feel like people also use them to really communicate what the world we live in now is like. So it's really hard to be left out of that conversation." Barriers to participating in meme culture can also directly affect social lives. Qualik Ford, a senior at the Maryland School for the Blind and the president of the Maryland Association of Blind Students, says the prevalence of memes makes it harder for him to connect with sighted friends. "Being a part of that culture is really important. Especially because I strive to have friends outside the blind community," says Ford. "I wish we could connect on this level." And leaving out people with visual impairments doesn't just affect how those with disabilities can communicate online. "Having a part of the population that is not involved in that part of the conversation deprives them of the ability to participate, which is a significant loss, but also deprives the community of their participation," says Aser Tolentino, the accessible technology
Re: [AI] GREETINGS!
What an amazing app. Congratulations to the founder and the entire team for the vision, the focus and the eventual outcomes. Thanks to this app, I am finally on Whatsapp after having made several failed attempts to access Whatsapp in its traditional garb. Louie reduces the time it takes to perform standard Whatsapp functions by at least 50% if not more and since we as visually impaired folks sometimes take more time to perform standard functions, time is always of the essence. My experience also demonstrates the inability of mainstream apps to understand the essential fundamentals of accessibility. It goes without saying that it is lip service all the way from start to finish. The major global players are no exception. Here is an example: The so called Voice Assistant from Big G was touted as an assistant especially for the visually impaired in a Google Conference which I was privileged to attend in person. In that case, even after so many years, why are several buttons on the home screen of the Assistant still unmarked? Talk Back, I am sure, delights itself and subsequently gets bored in saying unlabelled over and over again once the Assistant's home page is activated. The same challenge holds true for many other front runner apps as well. I do not want to cite chapter and verse here but I can definitely cite dozens of instances where apps from the world's top three players are inaccessible in one way or the other. Are the accessibility teams at these mega corporations sleeping on the wheel and enjoying the proverbial eternal snooze? You bet! The Indian banks, IRCTC, PayTM, on the other hand, are an entirely different bag of ongoing accessibility challenges. I think one of the attorneys in our Access India community should pick up the cudgels, take every violator to court and trigger hefty fines and penalties. Companies are not doing us any favors by paying attention to accessibility. It is the law both in spirit and in word. Attorneys should hit where it hurts the most, the corporate pocket book. Fortunately, there are several honorable jurors who have attempted to understand the challenges our community experiences every hour of the day. The recent letter to state courts regarding the accessibility of online legal resources is a case in point. We can therefore expect a certain level of support from the judiciary. Re: [AI] Two questions about the modalities of making documents accessible
Greetings Rahul: Welcome back to India. This is a challenge I encounter daily. Instead of taking a Word document and converting it directly into PDF, folks will first print the document out, scan it and then submit it to us as an attachment. Why they choose the long way out absolutely beats me and will remain a mystery. If you request the Word document version instead, half the time they will forget and apologize when you gently nudge them. Many of these documents are tied to assignments that tend to be highly time sensitive and hence immediate action is required. Ironically, if 99% of the PDF documents one needs to use are accessible and 1% is not, it is that 1% that is most critically required. The only work around I have been able to figure out is to ask one of my employees to correct these documents live and manually using Adobe Acrobat, the version that allows PDF documents to be edited. Once in a while, these PDF documents are security protected and since there is usually no time to request the sender to send us an unprotected version of the PDF, I am compelled to manually copy paste into Word and access them that way. I will recommend that you post a requirement on www.internshala.com and find a law student in his or her second or third year of their law degree. These students will kill to associate themselves with you and the Supreme Court. Many of these students need very powerful resumes to qualify for admission and scholarships at top tier law schools abroad, the student segment with which we work closely, and therefore you have lots of leverage. You will even be able to pick and choose your assistant. While helping these students to gain admissions to LLB, JD and LLM degrees abroad, my experience leads me to believe that law students from the various national law schools, Amity Law, IP University Law are the best with exceptional command over the English language. They will even be anxious to help you with legal research since that will be another bullet point on their resumes. As much as others might like to claim, technology does not have a 100% tenable, iron-clad solution to this problem. And that is perfectly acceptable. Technology will never be able to solve all the challenges our community experiences. Please drop me a line if you need any help with all this. Best. Re: [AI] News of Interest: Coronavirus | PM-CARES donations cut from government staff salaries
Greetings Pranayarani: Your gripe is with The Hindu, the Government of India and perhaps with Mr. Modi too. It is not with Mr. Avinash Shahi. Please note that Mr. Shahi did not editorialize the Hindu article. He merely provided a link. Sharing a link to a news article does not imply endorsement. Hence, according to your post below, your issue is not with the off topic nature of the post but with the content of the Hindu news item. Avinash was merely the bearer of bad tidings as far as you are concerned. So demolish the message, not the medium or the messenger! Please consider sharing your perspective with the Hindu's op ed page much like what Mr. Rahul Bajaj from this list has done so brilliantly in the past. Please go to the Access India archives to read two of his expertly written Hindu op eds. For Heaven's sake please do not serve as a deterrence and a hyperactive barrier to Mr. Avinash Shahi's selfless and honest efforts to bring relevant information to this platform. Talking about off topic postings is analogous to opening a proverbial can of worms. If we get technical about this and begin to cite chapter and verse about the number of off topic postings on Access India, even the sky is not the limit. [AI] Making of a WhatsApp group containing all the members of
Greetings All: I am writing to express my concern regarding any effort made by current, past or future members of Access India to transform this group into another garden variety group by transitioning to the Whatsapp platform. While it is always an excellent value proposition to scale up to new technologies, the rationale needs to be sound and cogent. Those members who have access to the Whatsapp platform also enjoy seamless access to email messaging on their cellphones. Since email is fully accessible on hand held devices, transitioning to the Whatsapp platform makes little sense . I will grant that Whatsapp is indeed a more fashionable way to conduct communication today. That said, Access India is not about fashion. It is about serving a noble cause where hundreds of members help each other with their daily challenges. A legacy system needs to be genuinely flawed for it to be abandoned. Moreover, how will those members who use regular phones that are not smartphones access the mailing list? Not everyone is entirely comfortable with Android and IOS technologies all else being equal. Bottom line? I do not find any tangible reasons to discard the email protocol when it comes to the access India mailing list. Where this discussion goes and eventually terminates is entirely in the hands of the moderators. Nevertheless, I thought I would add my two cents worth while the subject is being debated. [AI] Featured Article on Accessibility in USA Today: Rajesh from Noida
Greetings: Here is a fascinating article on the State of the Accessibility Challenge which appeared yesterday in USA Today. The total length of the article is 1401 words. If the article is any indication, Facebook should be able to catch up with Google with respect to accessibility in no more than a year or two. I will be speaking with Mr. King at 9:30 PM today local time. If there are any questions you would like me to ask on your behalf, please send them across to me at the email address which appears in the header of this message. Happy reading and now the featured article. Rajesh from Noida Matt King, a software engineer who has been blind since college, came to Facebook last summer with a mission: to make websites and mobile apps friendlier for people like him with disabilities. King, 50, uses screen-reader software that turns Web pages and documents into synthesized speech. The challenge he confronts every day: As many as half of websites are nearly impossible for him to browse. "There are not many products out there where you can say — actually it's hard to name any — that the experience of using them as a person with a disability is as good as it would be if you didn't have a disability," says King who is part of a team at Facebook that focuses on accessibility, such as providing closed captions for videos and keyboard shortcuts for people who can't use a computer mouse. Accessibility is a major problem that looms larger as the world's population grows and ages and as more of everyday life — applying for college or jobs, making a major purchase, getting health information — happens online. Websites are too seldom built with people with disabilities in mind. But increasingly, tech giants from Microsoft to Yahoo are focusing on making technology more accessible to everyone. A major push is underway to add accessibility curriculum to computer science programs and to educate software developers on how to build sites and apps that don't shut out people with disabilities, whether they use screen readers, mouth-controlled joysticks, closed captioning or eye-tracking technology. "There is certainly more of an interest in just the last five years from these big companies in Silicon Valley," said Geoff Freed, director of technology projects and Web media standards for the WGBH National Center for Accessible Media. It's also a hot topic at the 31st Annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference being held in San Diego this week. 'SEE' A FACEBOOK PHOTO WITH CAPTIONS Facebook is re-engineering its website and mobile apps, and it's brainstorming a new generation of futuristic products that harness the power of artificial intelligence to improve the experience of Facebook for people with disabilities. The first is an automated captioning tool launching in April that will help the visually impaired "see" a photo on Facebook by describing what's in it. The ever-quickening torrent of photographs and videos flooding Facebook presents a big challenge for the visually impaired. King says he gleans clues from the captions and comments, but "you really feel excluded when you can't see the picture." Even small bits of information can be helpful, King says. When a friend uploads a new profile picture without a caption, the tool tells him there is a person smiling in the photo. When a friend uploads a photo from her phone, it says: "Image may contain: two people, one toddler, smiling, outdoors." "These are our very first baby steps," he says. In time, Facebook hopes to provide a much fuller automated description of photographs and then videos. "It's really the idea that we are including everybody in the conversation," he says. ONE BILLION PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES Tech companies aren’t focusing on disability access simply out of altruism. Dependent on growth, they can’t afford to overlook large swaths of the population. In the United States, one out of every five adults has a disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some 15% of the world's population, an estimated 1 billion people, have disabilities. Another factor: legal risk. Courts are divided on whether websites and mobile apps are legally required to provide equal access to people with disabilities under the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act, which was enacted before the Internet became as ubiquitous as it is today. But advocates are increasingly filing lawsuits, claiming companies have a legal obligation to make their websites as accessible as a retail store, movie theater or restaurant. The Department of Justice delayed a plan to issue accessibility regulations until 2018, but in November said: "The inability to access websites put individuals at a great disadvantage in today's society, which is driven by a dynamic electronic marketplace and unprecedented access

Hi: Amar has listed several worthwhile suggestions in his post. English by no means is a tough nut to crack. However, there is a challenge which is easy to overcome. English has more exceptions than rules which calls for intense real time practice as opposed to an exclusive study of grammatical principles. To reduce if not completely eliminate hesitation, you should try to speak in English as much as possible and listen to spoken word recordings in English. As they say, accepting the fact that there is indeed a problem worthy of correction is half the battle won. There are many online free English learning resources that help you to enhance your capabilities through real time interactive practice. Fortunately, most of them are accessible. Here are a few: http://learn-english-today.com/ http://www.manythings.org/ http://fluentzy.com/ Scroll down to the bottom of the page for a free PDF. I couldn't agree more with Professor Sayanekar. Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, has consistently chosen to over-innovate at the cost of user convenience. It is perfectly acceptable to enhance back end functionality with time as over-the-horizon technologies continue to evolve. That said, modifying the user interface, in fact, replacing a fully viable user interface and then pushing millions of users to the basement of the learning curve not just once but repeatedly, has never made any sense. This is precisely why Microsoft isn't Google any more to which it lost its leadership position almost a decade ago. Visit the original Google home page from 2001 on archive.org and compare it to the Google home page of 2016 and you will be surprised to notice that the differences are marginal at best. Although the back end functionality on Google's home page has come a long way, the front end UI essentially continues to remain the same. The links continue to remain text links and even the site links are managed by Google very professionally. Several third party applications are available to give MS Word 2007 and above an MS Word 2003 look and feel. However, it isn't the same thing. Just my two cents worth for what it is worth! Nobody says that we should not make efforts, But when you say an outdated technology, there should be some reason to turn the technology into an out dated one. What was wrong with Office 2003, so that it was redundend? We never mind changes but they should be for the betterment of the community, and not only for the whim of the developers. The Microsoft Vista is the best example. That version of the operating system totally went flop. What was wrong with the nokia phones? They could havbe improved those to the higher level. My main objection is that they never take into consideration the difficulties faced by the VI persons, whose number is not neglijable. And it is only we, who have to keep adjusting. I am very satisfied with it's performance. Let me symplify the fact for you. If you just want calls, SMSES, internet, GPS, and music e5 is certainly an excelent choice. But if you are quite a tech geek type of a person If you love to play with different apps then rather buy android. Because symbian doesn't have that much apps. regards On 6/15/12, Shona Man shonam...@gmail.com wrote: I have used nokia n79 but not e5.
