Hi friends,
I remember reading somewhere that in Canada, the government has made it
mandatory for all EVs to have some kind of sound for the benefit of persons
with blindness and low vision.
Maybe, something similar can be lobbied for in India too.

Yes, I completely agree with Vedprakashji. UDID card must be allowed to be
used for all purposes by central, state as well as local governments.
The existing concession certificates/other documents must also be
permitted. This will eventually motivate everyone to get UDID cards.

Re: [AI] Retina pigmentosa treatment possibility

2022-10-23 Thread Rohith P
Dear Pinkesh,
In my opinion, it is better to keep away from such advertisements. As of
today, there is no treatment for RP anywhere. Apart from the ones you
provided, there are some Ayurvedic doctors and traditional healers at least
in Kerala who claim that they successfully treat RP. I have not heard about
a single person cured by any of them so far.
There are several research going on in various institutes around the world
and let us keep our fingers crossed for a breakthrough.

Rohith

Re: [AI] No human should go through this: Scindia on IndiGo denying boarding to special needs child

2022-05-11 Thread Rohith P
This was in 2009 April. I was travelling from Hyderabad to Delhi. After
issuing the boarding pass, the Indigo crew did not allow me to board the
aircraft saying that a blind person cannot travel alone. What surprised me
then was their insisting that if the blind passenger is travelling alone,
he/she must have a guide dog in order to board the flight. After an hour
of insistence on my part and calling/involving a few friends and
activists, they allowed me to board and took me to the aircraft along with
the pilot at the last minute with the advice that next time I must be
careful about the guidelines. All through this, I kept telling them that I
had declared my disability while booking and Indigo issued me the ticket
despite this.
That was only the second time I was flying and the very first time I was
doing it alone.
This is a never-ending struggle and at least once in every year we
read/hear such reports. And for every instance that is reported many such
instances go unreported.
in solidarity,
Rohith

2018-12-03 Thread Rohith P
Dear Harish,
But do you know any child who can read blindfolded using this
technique? And if someone can read blindfolded, a blind person should
also be able to read because visual signals have no role. I think the
responsibility of prooving such claims should be on the proponents of
such claims. As you said, let them produce people benefited by the
technique and then the medical science can study them. But I don't
think we would find any beneficiaries.
There is no good relying on false hopes.

Re: [AI] From regional to bollywood: Films that show world in a new light

2017-02-21 Thread Rohith P
Hi,
Just to add there are quite a few Malayalam films that follow the
stereotypical portrayal of the disabled. Some of them too were box
office hits as Vasanthiyum, Lakshmiyum Pinne Nhanum, OOmapenninu,
Uriyaada Payyan and the like.

Yet another Dilip film where the stereotype is used as a ploy to
divert the negativity of the character is Chess. I think the JayaSurya
film Beautiful and one of the shortfilms in Kerala Cafe too have
disabled characters in their lead roles. This is true of Artist, a
Fahadh Faasil movie.
These are just the recent ones. Maybe there are similar movies in the past too.

 hi,

pasting below, the list of 4 movies which my friend was talking about,
but just a small correction: the characters in these movies are not
blind, but have other disabilities, or belong to other marginalised
groups, and all these roles are played by the Malayalam actor Dileep.
in 1 of the movies he is a hunch-back, with a badly dis-figured face,
in another movie he has a cleft lip with speech impediments, etc.
there's 1 movie in which he has no disability, but is a cross-dresser.
i.e. he likes to ware so-called feminine clothes.
the fact still remains, that irrespective of the disability, these are
characters that are not conventionally accepted by society, and
especially when they are men, upon whom lies the entire onus of being
able, macho, real men of society, it'd be interesting to find out the
dynamics of the dual roles written for the actor, and the audiences
 true responses to such dicotomies.
i've also heard that when these movies were dubbed in Tamil, a lot of
the Tamil stars refused to perform those roles, claiming that playing
such roles will affect their popularity among their fans, deeming them
 as less masculine and able.
here are the names of the movies, and i believe all them were box-office
 hits.

Kunjikoonan, 2002 (directed by Sasi Shanker), Chanthupottu, 2005 (
directed by Lal Jose), Pachakuthira, 2006 (directed by Kamal), Sound
 Thoma,2013 (directed by Vyshak).

Hi,
A great news indeed. However, when can we start availing this

where do we get the list of commercial offices?
Please someone throw light.

of the things have to be clarified. one obvious thing which has to be
considered from the present notice is that they have said that this
photo-id card which they are going to issue will do two functions.
one, of course, we can use it for booking e-tickets. second is that it
can be used for booking tickets in the railway counters. the latter
one is not clear, since very recently railway has issued a new form
saying that would be a common form for all the disabilities. what
would happen to that common form, which almost all of us have. whether
it is going to be replaced by the photo-id card or we can still use
this one? beside all such problems/confusions , this is a welcoming
development in terms of accessibility, though it is very late.

RAILWAY EXTENDS E-TICKETING FACILITY FOR BOOKING OF RAIL TICKETS TO
 DIFFERENTLY - ABLED PERSONS

In order to afford greater convenience in the booking of rail
tickets, the Indian Railways has extended the e-ticketing facility to
Physically Challenged persons i.e. Orthopaedically handicapped/
Hearing Speech impaired persons/Mentally Challenged/ Vision
 Challenged passengers.

Such persons desirous of availing e-ticketing facility are requested
to submit their original handicapped medical certificate along with
two copies of recent passport size photographs, photo-identity proof
and proof of Date of Birth in the Commercial Branch of nearest
Divisional Railway Manager's Office. After due verification of the
certificate/documents, such persons will be issued Photo-identity card
through which facilities of e-ticketing can be availed for booking of
 rail tickets.

Some of salient features of the Photo-identity card are as follows.
This Photo-identity card is not transferable and must be used only on
journey conducted by the person in which this card is issued. The
element of concession shall be as per eligibility criteria based on
the type of disability in different types of trains and class of
travel. This concession is admissible to a single escort if eligible
on the type of disability, while traveling with the card holder. This
card is eligible for booking of reserved tickets from counters as well
as from internet on irctc.co.in. For availing the concession of
bookings, the card number shall be mentioned at the time of booking.
The card holder and escort accompanying the card holder must carry
their respective Photo-identity cards in original during the journey
for verification purpose by authorized railway official. At the time
of booking concessional tickets at the counter, the card holder must
produce the Photo-identity card in original and submit a photocopy of
the same. For other details, the general public is requested to click

Subject: [AI] regarding the accessibility of smart phones.

 Dear friends,
i have purchased an Android phone, lg l8 optimum smart phone with kitkat
 4.4.
I have just seen the talkpack application and i'm yet to master its
 functions.
However, on this occasion, i wish to share with you a strong challenge
that i felt. After the simbian and talks or mobile speak, most of our
visually impaired friends have started using phones with screen
readers. However, after the sudden withdrawal of the same softwares,
there seems to have a big vacuum. After making them inclusive, now we
seem to give them the message that you don't have any options. We know
clearly, how mnay of our visually impaired friends will be able to use
touch apps. Once the present simbian phones disappear, they will be
forced to use phones with out screen readers.
I'm not here to challenge the potential of the VI to use touch apps,
but my argument is that, unless and until we have a very inclusive
phone, wherein even with in the touch, accessibility is easily
available, we cannot consider it inclusive.
I wish to submit a write up to some of the mobile producers regarding
this critical juncture. Your suggestions on how to make the smart
phones more accessible and your opinions on my reflections are
 welcomed.
For example, even after retaining the touch pattern, can we make it
more accessible, by providing some projections or identifiable marks
 on the screen.
Such questions are to be discussed. Please share with us here, your
own feedback of using smart phones also.

First of all, let me congratulate you all for the election of Mr.

I am pleased to inform you of my selection to participate in the
Washington Fellowship Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) 2014.
The Washington Fellowship YALI is a program of President Obama which
aims to have 500 young African Leaders in the US to attend an exchange
study program of 6 weeks in 3 diffield. The 3 fields include public
management, business entrepreneurship and civic leadership.
Application for the Fellowship was opened in January 2014. I applied
for the Fellowship and I have been selected after having attended an
interview when being selected as semi finalist. I will attend 6 weeks
of Civic Leadership course at Rutgers University, the State University
of New Jersey. Our flight from Mauritius to the US and back to our
home country is paid for as well as our expenses including meals on
university campus. I will stay in the appartment on the university
campus. The Mauritian delegation is made of 5 Mauritians one person
from Rodrigues Island and 4 persons from the Seychelles. I am the only
person with a disability in the Mauritian delegation.

What is more interestingly fabulous is that all the 500 YALi
participants will spend 3 days in Washington DC to attend a 3 days
seminar presided by President Obama himself! 20 universities have
volunteered to participate in this program. Each Mauritian participant
is in a different university. We will be in classes of 25 students
 from other African countries.

I am leaving Mauritius to undergo this wonderful adventure next week.
I am proud that at least one blind person forms part of the Mauritian
 delegation.

It is the good news I wanted to share with you.

 Cheers,

 Aarthi Burtony

The problem is when your signature gets forged, how is the bank going to
know when it is genuine and when fake.

If the bank clears a cheque when it is forged, the bank has to
takeresponsibility for that transaction. Therefore, when the signature
 does
not match they have to return the cheque with a remark of signature
 mismatch.

i have a different idea in this regard. If your signature agrees to
the originally given one and you have not disagriment or claim against
what is being presented and you claim that it is your signature,
especially when you personally submit it, what is wrong in sanctioning
your doccument. I think that if rejected, you can tell them that as
long as you have no problems to the slight variation, nobody can deny

wrong in holding such a view.

 Hi
I do understand this problem. The problem has accentuated after core
banking is deployed. Earlier, the rapport which used to be with the
bank officials has now withered away. We are talking to an anonymous
person at the bank's bank's backend system personnel. Hence, they
would by no means be aware of the varience in our signature.

Until and unless we get biometric signature verification in place,
there is pretty little that can be done.
The only suggestion that can be made is to use electronic fund
transfer etc. Agreed, it cannot be done at all instances.

I too think that there is no need for restricting membership by means
of referals and invitation. We are all, most of us, able to say this
just because the access was free when we joined the list.
There are a lot of silent listers who benefit from fellow listers
quiries. So let the list be open to all. And regarding duplicate email
accounts: Many of us do have more than one account and this does not
tell us anything. Let's all follow the rules, and there is the
moderator in case of any violation. As always let's be inclusive.

don't think putting in too many restrictions would be a good idea. The
moderator is already having lots of responsibilities, saddling him
with further responsibilities of verification and so on may have
serious practical limitations. I don't think it would be prudent to
convert this platform into an invite only list, there are many people
from different parts of the country joining the platform, they may not
always find people to invite and refer.
If there are members who violate list guidelines, they can always be
removed. Anyone who abuses the list for nefarious purposes such as
duping people, again, the moderator can always take action.
So in my view, things should be considered on a case by case basis,
rather than bringing in too many restrictions that could deny access
to such an important platform for people who would need it.

There are several people on the list who just want to be updated on the
 new
development in the VI Sector, family members, friends, relatives,
journalists, students, govt. officials, and the list is too wide.

Email verifications and brief information about the person joining the
 list
would serve the purpose of the list. The moderator may consider having
 more
personal information, if required, about each member admitted to the
 list.
Idea is not to restrict the members on the list but to promote and
enourage healthy and constructive discussions and information sharing on
the subjects that affect the VI and allowed under the list guidelines.
 This
being a public forum, the archive of the mails/discussions is available
 thorugh search engines.

Therefore, conduct of the person on the list over a period of time should
be the deciding criteria and Moderator should be the best judge on this.
Any content that is abusive or comes with in the restricted parameters
 can
also be removed from the archive and thread closed for traffic and the
person /email id can be banned from the list after due diligence.

Hi All, specially the moderator, by seeing the bulk members and some of
their useless mails, I would like to suggest you to make some limitations

and frame a revised guidelines to post the messages of members. I think
that, this is a very useful platform of sharing our views regarding
related issues of blind and blindness. But I am very sorry to say that,
some of our members are not serious of abiding these guidelines and
expending the list by posting errelevant mails or quarelling with other
members. So, seeing this, I would like to suggest that, the moderator
should take some diciplinery action against those members who are not
serious of writing mails, and post vogus mails. The moderator can add a
section and can invite positive and negative views of members who are
serious/not serious and make errelevant posts or post errelevant topics
rather than posting useful topics. The members may have some voting
options also. In this way, a members rating can be done by the members in

respect of their relevance. In this way you can classify a member and you

can strike out the membership of those members who are harmful for this
platform. Sir, please, do this to make the list more meaningful. Regards.

 Yours sincerely,Amarnath De.

Re: [AI] PARAVOOR:Mass wedding held for visually challenged

2013-02-27 Thread Rohith P
As far as I understand, there is no such thing as an ideal
relationship. And the question of dependency is relevant in all sorts
of relationships. I don't think anyone with selfrespect will/can
tolarate a onesided relationship. For every marriage or friendship to
be successful, those involved must be mutually dependent.
The belief that a blind has to be entirely dependent on his/her
partner, be it marital or otherwise, stems from lack of confidence and
assurance. The over dependent nature is partially due to the feeling
that a so-called normal person marrying a blind is an act of charity.
I have blind friends, and I know there are many more out there who
have opted for divorce when the relationship was not according to
their expectations.
So, ultimately what matters is not the physical status of the partner
but the way in which the two relate to each other.

On 2/27/13, payal payal.thereside...@gmail.com wrote:
 Siddhi,

Answering the first two of your questions as the third doesn't apply to me
 as I have no children:

 1. Was your partner open or hesitant to discuss problem of your
 disability?
how did you handle the problem? give some example if you can.

Payal- I had known my partner for 2 years before I married him, so he was
already aware of the problems and adjustments that take place. Having said
that, living together in one house presents different challenges. We had no
trouble discussing my disability and he went to the other extreme treating
me like I had no disability at all, which has it's own ramifications,
because I did have two disabilities and needed help from time to time. and
 I
was the one who ran the house in every practical aspect. There are
 instances
like in the kitchen where when he tried to help, I had to insist he kept
things back exactly where he had picked them from, as any change would
 cause
me disorientation and waste time. Anything arranged in the house, placement
wise, could not be changed without my knowledge and consent. It is
 essential
to keep the house as barrier free to facilitate ease in movement without
 any
 hazards.

 2. how do you contribute which makes your partner feel equal? what did you
 do to solve the problem?

Payal: I think the first answer says it all. Only constant communication
 and
interaction in undertaking activities together can help. He followed my
 lead
in things which I handle and he involved me in things he handled but made
 me
aware of what was being done, so in case he wasn't around, I could take
 care
 of the same.

 3. Do you feel that any moment in case of your kid, i would be a better
father/mother if i would have been sighted like my lifepartner?

Payal: doesn't apply in my case. No children.

Wonder if it answers your queries as you'd like them to be.

 1. Was your partner open or hesitant to discuss problem of your

 3. Do you feel that any moment in case of your kid, i would be a

 Blind-blind marriage

 1. which daily problems you face as blind couple? what do you do to
 overcome it?

 2. how do you manage the schooling and other things of yore kid?

 3. Did you ever felt too much interfearence of sighted people around
you due to some kind of assistance which was unavoidable to you at
 that situation?

Any list member can answer and other can also raise the more potential
questions which they might be facing , have in mind or explain their
problems and the solutions which they arrived at.

This is an alpha release primarily intended for testing purposes and

This programme was developed as part of the INSIGHT project (

In reality, there is nothing called cooling software. If your
 laptop heats
up unusually, this is caused either by a hardware fault or an
 application or
a background process which is consuming too much processing power.

After your computer boots up completely and the fan starts
 spinning, make
sure that you close all open windows. Open task manager by pressing
Ctrl+Shift+Escape. Check the status bar (JawsKey+PageDown in Jaws).
 You will
see how many processes are running and what the CPU usage is. If
 the CPU
usage is very high, around 80% or 90%, then this is a software
 problem.

Firstly, do a full system virus scan to see if there is any spyware
 which is
running in the background. If this doesn't help, go to task manager
 again
and to the processes page. In the list, check which process is
 consuming the
 maximum CPU cycles.

Tip: if you are using Jaws, press Ctrl+JawsKey+3 to get the CPU
 usage for a
 particular process.

You will most likely find the culprit in these steps. If not, you
 most
likely have a hardware fault either with your memory module or hard
 drive.
Try chkdsk to see if helps.

The so called Cooling software might actually do more harm if
 indeed there
 is a hardware fault...

 Kiran

As there was no proper solution to address this requirement, I did notput

However, we now have bookbole.com which specifically caters to this need.

There are several things that this speech software cannot do which software
packages specially designed for us do, but this is a very good alternative

If Nokia can be convinced to add more functionality to the existing speech

I seek your advice guidance regarding a writer-related problem.

Last Sunday, I had appeared for the recruitment exam conducted by BPCL for
PWD OBC candidates. In it's advertisement, BPCL had undertaken to
 provide
scribes for PWD candidates requiring them.

Unfortunately, the writer provided to me had a very poor command of
 English.
He kept skipping mispronouncing words. After struggling with the writer
for a half-hour, I requested the exam supervisor to provide me with an
alternative writer. I was informed that no alternative writers were
available the examination centre (a junior college in Sion) had arranged
only three writers for the three PWD candidates appearing for that exam.
Since one of the other PWD candidates had failed to appear for the test, I
was provided with the writer initially allotted to him. Fortunately, the
replacement writer had good reading skills I was able to proceed
 smoothly
 with him.

I seek the advice suggestions of the respected members on the following
 points.

1.. Are there any guidelines for selection of writers by examination
authorities who provide writers to the candidates?
 B. What guidelines could be framed to ensure that such writers have a
reasonable command of English decent reading skills as a minimum
 standard?

 c. In case a replacement writer is unavailable the PWD candidate is not
comfortable with the allotted writer, what steps should the candidate
 take?

 d. Is there a provision for the candidates to try writers from a panel of
writers provided by the examining authority to decide which writer is
 suitable?

Thanking you all in advance for your invaluable suggestions on above
 queries.

[AI] (Mind and Brain] News: Spanish scientists develop echolocation in humans

2009-07-03 Thread Rohith P
-- Forwarded message --
From: Jobin Mathew ljobin2...@yahoo.com
Date: Tue, 30 Jun 2009 21:11:05 -0700 (PDT)
Subject: Fw: [Mind and Brain] News: Spanish scientists develop
echolocation in humans
To: p.roh...@gmail.com

Hi, felt the list might find this interesting.

Spanish scientists develop echolocation in humansJune 30th, 2009

A team of researchers from the University of Alcalá de Henares (UAH)
has shown scientifically that human beings can develop echolocation, the system
of acoustic signals used by dolphins and bats to explore their surroundings.
Producing certain kinds of tongue clicks helps people to identify
objects around
them without needing to see them, something which would be especially
useful for
the blind.
“In certain circumstances, we humans could rival bats in our echolocation or
biosonar capacity”, Juan Antonio Martínez, lead author of the study and a
researcher at the Superior Polytechnic School of the UAH, tells SINC. The team
led by this scientist has started a series of tests, the first of their kind in
the world, to make use of human beings’ under-exploited echolocation skills.

In the first study, published in the journal Acta Acustica united
with Acustica, the team analyses the physical properties of various sounds,
and proposes the most effective of these for use in echolocation. “The almost
ideal sound is the ‘palate click, a click made by placing the tip of the tongue
on the palate, just behind the teeth, and moving it quickly backwards, although
it is often done downwards, which is wrong”, Martínez explains.

The
researcher says that palate clicks “are very similar to the sounds made by
dolphins, although on a different scale, as these animals have
specially-adapted
organs and can produce 200 clicks per second, while we can only
produce three or
four”. By using echolocation, “which is three-dimensional, and makes
it possible
to ‘see’ through materials that are opaque to visible radiation” it is possible
to measure the distance of an object based on the time that elapses between the
emission of a sound wave and an echo being received of this wave as it is
reflected from the object.

In order to learn how to emit, receive and
interpret sounds, the scientists are developing a method that uses a series of
protocols. This first step is for the individual to know how to make and
identify his or her own sounds (they are different for each person), and later
to know how to use them to distinguish between objects according to their
geometrical properties “as is done by ships’ sonar”.

Some blind people
had previously taught themselves how to use echolocation “by trial and error”.
The best-known cases of these are the Americans Daniel Kish, the only blind
person to have been awarded a certificate to act as a guide for other blind
people, and Ben Underwood, who was considered to be the world’s best
“echolocator” until he died at the start of 2009.

However, no special
physical skills are required in order to develop this skill. “Two hours per day
for a couple of weeks are enough to distinguish whether you have an object in
front of you, and within another two weeks you can tell the difference between
trees and a pavement”, Martínez tells SINC.

The scientist recommends
trying with the typical “sh” sound used to make someone be quiet. Moving a pen
in front of the mouth can be noticed straightaway. This is a similar phenomenon
to that when travelling in a car with the windows down, which makes it possible
to “hear” gaps in the verge of the road.

The next level is to learn how
to master the “palate clicks”. To make sure echoes from the tongue clicks are
properly interpreted, the researchers are working with a laser pointer, which
shows the part of an object at which the sound should be aimed.

A new
way of seeing the world

Martínez has told SINC that his team is now
working to help deaf and blind people to use this method in the future, because
echoes are not only perceived by their ear, but also through vibrations in the
tongue and bones. “For these kinds of people in particular, and for
all of us in
general, this would be a new way of perceiving the world”.

Another of
the team’s research areas involves establishing the biological limits of human
echolocation ability, “and the first results indicate that detailed resolution
using this method could even rival that of sight itself”. In fact, the
researchers started out by being able to tell if there was someone standing in
front of them, but now can detect certain internal structures, such as bones,
and even “certain objects inside a bag”.

The scientists recognise that
they are still at the very early stages, but the possibilities that would be
opened up with the development of echolocation in humans are enormous. This
technique will be very practical not only for the blind, but also for
professionals such as firemen (enabling them to find exit points
through smoke),
and rescue teams, or simply people lost in fog.

 dear friends,
It'd be a great help if some of you in Hyderabad could inform me about
the places/institutions where I can buy WhiteCane from. I have asked
some of my VI friends who are students like me without much result. If
some of you could throw some light on this issue it'd be much
 appriciated.

[AI] ETickets in IndianRailways for VI

2009-03-31 Thread Rohith P
dear listers
Is it possible to book train ticket online availing concession.
I tried booking ETicket using the IRCTC.CO.IN but was not given the
option to specify concession. If there is no such provision, don't you
think it's high time that we collectively demanded extending ETicket
facility to the VI and other PWDS. This will be a great help as it
reduces a lot of unnecessary travel and inconvenience. This will also
help many of us as some of the booking clarks are not aware of the
rules and regulations GOVERNING concession to PWDs.
I have faced some problems in booking tickets with concession from
several railway stations in hyderabad, to be specific Lingampally,
Chandaanagar and secanderabad stations. After my repeated attempts,
the booking counter at lingampally, which was the closest to my
location, became fairly responsible and helpful. Now that I've shifted
my residence I am facing it with my new local station.
looking forward to have your experiences and thoughts

 hai friends,
I'm using a free software (Some PDFToTXT) to convert PDF files to

   Hi Reem,

Welcome to the group and I have the following suggestions to offer:

First of all, although JNU presently facilitates visually impaired
   students,
those facilities have been achieved as the result of the constant
  struggle
that we faced for years in convincing the University authority about our
requirements. When I joined JNU in 1997, it was also lagging behind it's
foreign counter parts in terms of the fulfillment of certain basic
requirements of the visually impaired students. But I myself and a few
   other
visually impaired students took the following steps.

First, we made an appointment with the University's vise chancellor and
   met
him with a well drafted letter describing our difficulties and
  challenges,
the role of modern computer technology in liberating us from those
difficulties and so on. More significantly we had a VC who was willing
  to
listen to us. In fact he was convinced by us so much that he sanctioned
funds for the purchase of two computers within a week after our meeting.
   So
that's what should be done and although I cannot give you surety about
  the
sensitivity of your VC since I am afraid to say that Indian
  administrators
mostly turn their back on our issues. As for as the orientation of the
campus is concern, you should approach some organizations in Hyderabad
working on issues related to Visually impaired people and although I am
   not
sure to what extent they can provide personal training in University
   campus.
Perhaps other members from the city can throw light on this issue.
  Present
JNU campus improved so much, but it was certainly a big challenge for us
   in
the beginning and conservation of nature was given as the reason for not
doing anything to remove certain barriers. But of course things have
   changed
there at the moment and the JNU visually impaired forum continues to be
active in sensitizing the administrators about our requirements. If
possible, you and the other visually impaired person in your university
should contact JNU and get details regarding their services to the
physically challenged in general and visually challenged students in
particular. An official letter from them may become handy for
  reinforcing
your demands to your administrators. Perhaps present JNU students on the
list can help you in getting a detailed letter from JNU? What do other
members think on this issue? Any other workable suggestions to Reem?

   Vetri.

On 8/19/06, Dinesh Kaushal [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Hi Vidya,

Security dialog is to inform you about secure or non secure web pages. when
you transition from a secure page to a non secure or vice versa, the dialog
pops up to inform you the status.

You can also figure out if the page is secure or not by looking at the web
address. if it has http: then it is not secure, but if it has https: then it
 is secure.

In a secure page, the information that you enter on the page is sent to the
web site after encrypting it. The web site receiving the encrypted
information then decrypt the information. The algorithm (RSA algorithm named
with initial letters of three of it's inventors) uses pair of keys, out of
which one key is public and the other is private.
The web site sends the public key to your browser , but no one other than
the web site knows the private key (that's why it is private. Any one who
knows the public key can encrypt the information, but without the private
key no one can decrypt the information.

private key how ever is not totally secure, given enough computing power, it
can be deciphered. But the computing power available commonly is not enough
to decrypt 128 bit or higher. it is shown by many researchers (using super
computers) that up to 140 bits can be decrypted, (exact number may differ)
 as
it's been some time for me when I had last updated my knowledge. the time it
takes to decipher a key, grows exponentially, i.e. if it takes to decrypt a
key an hour, it will take 2 hours to decrypt the same key with one more bit
added to it. If you have read about the story where a king is happy and
promises a guy to give what ever he wants, and the guy says give me 1 grain
on the first cell of the chess, 2 on second and 4 on third, double the
amount with each cell, and later they figure out that pretty soon they ran
out of the whole grain supply of the state. that's how exponential growth
 works.

The same technology is used by digital signature, but the process is
reversed. anything that one wants to sign, is encrypted using the private
key and your public key is used to decrypt the information. now the problem.
how will someone verify that actually you signed the document? since your
private key is not available to anyone. There comes a hierarchical system of
maintaining private keys, where each entity stores the keys, and the final
private key is with verisign, who maintains it somewhere in USA and the
facility is guarded like nuclear facilities. When we get digital signature,
we get our private key which we should preserve with utmost care, and the
issuing agency saves our private key by encrypting it with their public key,
and their own private key stays with their issuing agency. and they do not
have access to their own private key, so they generate our public key before
encrypting our private key, as they will not be able to decrypt our private
key then onwards. So if you want to verify that some public key is actually
the public key of the entity who claims so, you send that public key to the
verification agency, who maintains the private key and the public key, they
match your public key with the public key that they have, and tell you the
 status.

Digital certificates maintain all the information required to identify an
entity. But we don't have to do all the above ourselves, mostly the software
that we use do all the activity behind the seen.

 Hope it clarifies.

 Regards
 Dinesh
