Re: [AFMUG] Fw: NBC News: Alabama station in disbelief after 200-foot radio tower stolen

2024-02-20 Thread CBB - Jay Fuller

well - a few things that have come out now and are "known"

This station billed itself as "101.5 WJLX". No mention of the AM .
It's assumed no one has listened to the AM for years.
Videos and posts have circulated online that the AM broadcast site hadn't been
active for years.

This thread has determined the tower went "missing" sometime between October
2022 and March 2023.
The site was likely in poor shape long before that.

Not sure what prompted the great "oh! it's missing!" debacle unless he was
aware he was about to get
violated by the FCC or something.

I was the first to jump to it being either an inside job or someone that
really had an axe to grind with the owner.

The effort involved in stealing a tower would not be worth the value of the
scrap steel I would not think.

Not once you cut the wires and/or steal the transmitter.

But there have been multiple reports the site has been offline for years and
lying to the FCC so they can operate via their FM repeater. Not saying the
reports are true, what’s the acronym now for “just asking questions”, JAQ?

In my home county we have two licensed AMS, 1340 and 1460. 1460 has been

but never filed as silent and still shows as licensed. 1340 signed off
last week - the property had been abandoned,

seized for unpaid taxes, auctioned from the federal government (all by the

sold for a development of houses. Good for them.

im seeing a trend toward the commercials coming back into the fray. Theres so
much free streaming out there now with commercial breaks its cutting the big

The only issue is the decentralization of the streaming industry now,

keeps removing content, witch sucks for consumers and the people who helped
make the movies.

Movie houses are also going belly up, less and less of them.

A few weeks ago the Windows search box was broken for me, but I was in the
middle of something where I couldn't restart my computer. That was the
first time I'd used the Start Menu to open applications in 4 or 5 years. I
only use Start to find the "shutdown" button. Yes, it's faster to search by
the name of the application than to click through the Start Menu for it. I
also use it for the Control Panel items I open most often. For example I
start typing "ethernet" and then click "ethernet settings" as soon as it
appears and I type "device" and click on "device manager".

I don't generally search for settings in a device. Maybe I'll try it.

We've got a new employee in his 20's. He never browses for programs off his
start menu, but uses the windows search box for everything.

Anything that has a search box, he types into that. I didn't even know that
the Grandstream UCM's had a search function, but he only uses that to find
settings to change. Is this normal behavior now? Is it actually faster?

Re: [AFMUG] Yealink "Forbidden"

2023-05-03 Thread CBB - Jay Fuller

I would take one of their phones completely offsite, preferably to a completely
different provider (or if that isn't possible, another segment of your
network). If they work fine there, it is probably a problem there in your
network. Likely if it says forbidden again it's a problem with the voip
provider. We're a grandstream shop here but when i've seen forbidden it is
almost always a voip provider problem.

Good luck! I usually don't give network advice, i'm by far not the smartest
guy here. :)

I was hoping somebody would know would triggers a “Forbidden” message on the
Yealink’s screen. I can assume, but I don’t know.

“Do other devices have issues or are all issues isolated to Zoom phones?” ß
good question. The phones are in focus because having no phones is an emergent
issue. I can’t prove there aren’t any other related issues. That’s part of
why I want to understand what’s happening. It’s an apartment building. If
there are tenants having some weirdly specific issue like this they might not
have reported it yet.

You see two subnets because I moved the phones to a different VLAN….that was
something their IT guy suggested. The one in 100.64.x.x is just unplugged or
something and that was the last known IP.

I appreciate the suggestions regarding ALG and Firewall rules, but those have
been checked and re-checked.

We do provide the Internet access, and for historical reasons we do also
control the router and switches. We’re moving away from managed systems like
that, but for the next 6 months or so it’s still in my purview.

What we did change on Monday was layer2 topology. There were literally 10
switches in between these phones and the router. Now there are 2. That should
be better if anything. They’re blaming their issues on that change, but I
don’t see how. It’s the same switches except I jumpered up a different fiber
path through the building to shorten that 10 switch daisy chain. The only
thing new is a couple of SFP transceivers on previously unused ports. I did
compare port settings and there’s no difference between new and old. I might
go swap transceivers, but that would be an act of desperation because it would
make no sense.

I haven’t talked to Zoom directly, but if the customer’s IT guy is to be
believed they are remarkably unhelpful.

Also exciting is the customer is part of a larger corporation and their IT
guy is in another state. The best we can do for remote hands is a maintenance
person. I can go there again and play around, but I don’t wanna. Firstly, I
got other stuff to do. Secondly, there’s the “post hoc ergo propter hoc”
issue. Any time people see you touch something they may assume any problem
they have for the next month is because you were there. “I can’t print, car
won’t start, and there’s a wasp nest in the attic…..I bet it was that damn
internet guy.”

This is really simple. If they can ping the internet or do anything else
that requires internet at the same time the phones show offline, it's not your
problem. They should be contacting their phone provider.

Their voip provider can provide them host names to ping or trace to in
order to troubleshoot. If you don't sell the voip, you shouldn't be
troubleshooting it aside from making sure your network ping, jitter, and

It is always a fine line between training, course corrections and
micro-managing. I tend to over delegate and under train at times. I
don’t always notice the glazed over eyes when I think they got it.
Employees are sometimes very reluctant to tell you they don’t have it, don’t

I did have to teach a whole batch of youngsters how to sweep a couple of
years ago. We were microtrenching in a city street and they needed to
sweep up the street. Big push brooms, and that is what they did, the
pushed them. Of course leaving a trail of crap behind them. I
literally had a broom lesson with five (allegedly) adult men in the residential
streets of Salt Lake City...

Im new to owning a company and really struggling with being the
boss boss. One of the big things im struggling with is identifying where i am
micromanaging. Im not saying you are micromanaging and Im not saying he was
doing a good job, but I do find that because of my situation at my full time
job
where i was the only guy so everything was designed around things being done
with only two hands that its hard to let go of any detail on any process. At
that job ive been stepping back and allowing them to build their own processes,
not at all the way i would do it, in the end the outcome is success some of the
times (the bosses kid is replacing me, so access to better tools and materials
is helping that along). In my boss man role I am catching myself micromanaging,
telling a guy how to hold a shovel when hes already dug a five foot hole faster
than me.

The point is, make sure he is definitely fucking up, and not assuming hes
fucking up just because of a different process than you would use. Talking more
than working, make sure he was not just talking more than you and working less
than you, hes not the owner and doesnt have to, his skin in the game resets
every payday.

I really doubt your the asshole here, but you are an aging nerd, and we
nerds tend to become fickle with years.

He is calling OSHA, but that shouldnt be a concern, you just hit the osha
guy with a pipe and put him in the dumpster, landfills are full of OSHA
inspectors. But really, im coming to find out OSHA compliance isnt the beast it
is presented as, just dont let him see your triple stacked boxes falling
over

The “I
guess I am going to have to ignore my own exceptionalism to be able work here”
was enough to fire him. Thats a poison apple statement, even if its accurate,
that guy would have poisoned your workforce dynamic if he would say something
like that to the boss, he definitely would design mutiny amongst labor.
FYI, he cant call OSHA if hes in the landfill with the OSHA
guys.

to paywalling critical exploitable vulnerabilies, that feels more like
exploitation by deliberate omission if you ‘choose’ not to spend a nice

Weird stuff to redact. Seems this should all be public info since it was the
publics money. Monetary recompense is nice and all, but until we start
executing owners in the town square, violently, every program will be scam
full. Maybe we dont execute everybody, but we cut off their hands that were in
the cookie jar and use images of their nubs to remind would be thieves that
their ability to rub one out will be greatly diminished. Could even offset some
of the pilfered funds through auctions of their fingers and various hand bones.

A man called Otto. Hey, wife and I were just happy to be able to get out and

Best thing I can say about Babylon was the sound track. Good stuff. Rest of
it was garbage LOL

Man called Otto. This is a remake of a movie that did really well overseas a
few years ago apparently. Very much the same story line.
Good stuff, carry a tissue with you. For once they didn't give away the entire
plot in the previews. We all know grumpy old men like
Otto. We rarely know their backstory

Everything sent to cell phone with a pair of keys. One key is in your SIM
card, and the other is in the EPC at the cell company’s head end. I
assume the amber alert is still encrypted like everything else. Could be wrong,
but you might have to crack that to send anything to your phone that it would

requires a 499 number.

Trying to fill out the 499 paperwork. OK, this was coming anyway.

Who is the most popular used registered DC agent? Who do most of you use?
Whats required to enter
into an arragement for this? USAC wants this done in about negative 3 days.
They'd like all this done
by Monday.

Ugh.

basically the only people seeing the movie. Before Maverick maybe 7 in the
theatre. A list meant for a Netflix type fee we see unlimited movies.

I offered half the listing price because of covid coming and the sellers
accepted. We've been open since Godzilla in March 2021 and things have been
doing better.

I can say with certainty that my $50k projector and sound system blows any of
your home theaters out of the water haha!

That said, I prefer to watch new releases alone on days we're closed or after
the public shows because people are generally annoying. Getting up to use the
bathroom, dropping things on the wood floor, talking, etc. All the things you
all hate, I hate too. But we keep a clean theater, have the best popcorn I've
ever tasted, we're friendly, and I'm renovating things slowly over 2-3 years to
repair and upgrade this 1937 theater.

We just added a small 2nd screen upstairs so we can show more than one movie at
a time. 4k laser projector is coming next year with heated recliners too.

The movie industry is not dead and continues to be resilient coming out of
covid. The downside to this industry is we rely on good movies being released.
If the studios release a bunch of duds, theaters don't do well. So we're at the
mercy of the product that shows on our screens.

Top Gun Maverick is one of my favorite movies now! I've seen it 3 times and
we're bringing it back for a week again starting July 1 because it did so well
for us in the first 2 weeks we had it. I'll watch it a 4th time.

Why not equip all school doors with electrically controlled latches.
Fire alarm automatically disables them unless there is a concurrent lock down
alarm. (Or maybe not.) This would be very easy to do. Even
retrofit with wireless control. Give all staff a pendent button
lanyard. Several buttons. EMS, Shooter, Lower priority help
button. There is some money to be made there...

If
anything shoots back or has the ability to do so most of them aren’t too
interested in that from what I’ve experienced. They get very upset if you
don’t disclose if you had bullets or guns in the fire they’re working. If they
find out they pull all of the fire fighters out.

I’d
be interested to see what a Department of Education Task Force or Police Force
would look like to protect schools on a federal level.

But
I’m all for 1st responders actually responding instead of spending
their time fighting parents who want to go in and help save lives. I’m also for
raising the age that a person can obtain a semi-automatic rifle and I’d like
some kind of health screening done to obtain them.

I
have no problem passing a mental health screening to obtain
anymore.

Just
my opinion

Not a totally terribly idea..
I should point out that the city of Sunnyvale California eliminated the "fire
department" many years ago (we lived in Sunnyvale until 1996). They have
"Public
Safety Officers". These officers patrol the city in police cruisers, and where
they roam is determined by an algorithm that attempts to predict where they
might be needed. Each officer has their fire fighting gear in the trunk of the
cruiser so that if there's a fire, they will be ready.
They city saved an enormous amount of money by combining the two departments,
and their success rate is very good.

How about we let the
fire department handle active shooters at schools.

They know how to get

They know how to
breach any building and rescue survivors.

They have heavy
protective gear on, just add a layer of kevlar.

Or give them
extra/different gear they can don on the way to the incident.

They sure as hell
don’t stand around outside discussing jurisdiction and strategy.

They care more about
rescue than they do about their own lives.

I vaguely remember back in the 90s when there was a TV show called hannity and
combs. It actually put a liberal and a conservative on the same debate
show. I never watched it I just knew it existed.

We need something like that again. People need to hear both sides.

Calling out people does work but only if you have established relationships and
it is a relationship that both wish to keep going. It can help humanize the
problem and help the other person see the harm.

The point that should be made is that exactly two people died by any
means that day, and the young twerp was the cause of both. If he had
stayed home watching Walker Texas Ranger (or whatever gets his jollies

Machinery Trader got taken down by ransomware too. Most likely a

ransomware...

With as many datacenters they have, this must be a CDN/router level
attack, wouldn’t you think?

Is this registrar idea merely speculation or do we have a source for that?

I can’t reach their DNS servers. I do have routes to the networks their DNS
servers are on, and tracert stops in one of their /16’s.

Seems like their DNS is broken internally? This seems absurd, but I’m not
sure it’s any less absurd than other theories.

connection and the only explanation is "difficulties at the core." It's not
good news as we still have not been giving a cause, location or ETA. We will
continue to work with the carrier until the issue is resolved and all of our
subscribers are back online. We know everyone's patience, including ours, is
wearing thin due to the lack of information and resolution. We will pass along
any new information as it becomes available.
  _
  4:30 PM Update:
We have sent an email communication to all of our subscribers
with additional information, including the notice that a bill credit will be
issued for this outage. Please check the email associated with your Sprout
Account. Unfortunately, the short answer is we still do not have an ETA of when
service will be restored and we still do not know the cause. The issue is in
the connection from Atlanta via an internet carrier to us. There is no damage
or cause on our side of the connection.

  1:30 PM Update:
We do not have an estimated time for service restoration. We
are communicating with our service provider, and as soon as we hear any new
information from them, we will let you know.

We are experiencing an internet outage from our provider that
is impacting all of our subscribers. We are getting more information and will
report updates here.

The information these people have posted is "it's the core". Which tells me it
isn't a fiber cut.

We had a ~30hr Windstream outage as well. Aerial fiber got destroyed by a
car accident. It had to be spliced over a 6-lane highway in multiple places
apparently.

where the breaks were and then actually repairing took I think about 6
hours, they ended up replacing a 3/4 mile section. Never got
information about what actually caused the damage on that one. I've
also heard some stories locally of extended repair times due to
flooding, where a road (and a cable) was washed out and it took
several days to even regain access to the site to start working on
repairs.

Is it really two full days of outage or just, on it's second day today?
As I'm sure you know it's very possible for a fiber cut to take more
than 24 hours to restore. We had a windstream cut recently that took
30 hours. And, our other carrier had a maintenance event overnight
that same night they couldn't delay! But luckily it was just for a few
hours at night. Working on a 3rd diverse path now.
This sounds like they are still single homed which in current times,
really seems irresponsible especially for a company with as much
resources as an electric coop should have. I'd have some anonymous
accounts start a discussion of where's your backup connection on their
FB group if you want to play nasty.

Mark - having tons of trouble getting our company accounts registered in
NLAD. I can login and look around but can't do much else. To call and ask for
help is a 45+ min process (i've already done it once)

  Questions:

Once a subscriber has enrolled do you have any way of looking them up? For
example I can login to the national verfier but then it presents me with a
blank slate. I can't look anyone up. I guess this interface is for me taking
an application over the phone or something which of course the webinars say is
a no no no bad thing. [the customer is supposed to sign the application under
penalty of purgery]

When a subscriber is “National Verified” there is not a way to look them up.
If they are verified THEN you ENROLL them you can look them up. In NLAD, under
“Tools & Resources”, EBBP Reports. You can, however find out if they are
actually approved with NV by calling 1-833-511-0311, option 1, 1, 3 (don’t have
to wait for prompts) then enter the NV Application ID without the first letter.
The customer should have it handy from a confirmation email. This will tell
you if they have qualified. (Thanks tina at ayera.com)

We have about 30 customers so far who have told us they've signed up and wish
the benefit to be added to their account. Without any additional information
(for example, PERFECTLY matching the street address like you said or the
required SSN-4 if they don't have a

tribal id, which none of ours will have, is there any way to get this
information from the national verifier itself?

Nope. They (USAC) call it “PII” – Personally Identifiable Information and
won’t share it. Even if you have the National Verifier Application ID, it won’t
help. Screenshots from their session at checklifeline.org (they can log back
in later) might be helpful in matching everything up.

If not, that means we have to go back and request this information from
everyone who has signed up already.

  Yup. Lotsa fun.

That's fine, we've not been "egging people" along to sign up yet as we try to
figure all of this out. Coming down to the wire on June 1 tho.

What’s the June 1 “wire” you refer to? Next billing date?

from https://forms.universalservice.org/portal/login; NLAD ; ETC Admin
Page ; Maintain SAC Information ; I can't enter / modify

anyhthing there. Shouldn't I be able to see my SAC? I can see my SAC under
the officer home page. Confused there.

Known System issue that won’t allow it for EBB Administrators. Lifeline
administrators can see it though.

From NLAD ; I can add staff members, but i can't add their representative
IDS.is this normal?

This is a problem a lot of us ran into. Got this advice: “You need to link
all RAD IDs (including officer and admin) you want to use to your account. The
PDF instructions on how to do this is here
(https://www.usac.org/wp-content/uploads/lifeline/documents/RAD/NLAD-Production-Guide-RAD-with-Individual-User-Accounts.pdf)
.” It’s a CSV upload process the first time (admin /officer), I believe after
that you can update them from the web site. (Thanks George at lokket.com)

Thanks for any advice you can give from this

You very likely want to force them to use the feds website to verify
eligibility. You can do it on your own but I would strongly suggest you don’t
want to do that as it entails a lot more work and liability on your part
including handling a lot of sensitive personal information like social security
numbers, tax returns, etc.

  Yup. Lotsa fun.

My overly optimistic forehead brain tells me that Starlink will be so
successful internationally for governments, military, industry, remote rural
etc
etc that they will max out their system in the first few years without even
needing any domestic customers. I am sure they will come out with a mobile
package soon and Teslas will have it built in.

Nobody mourned the end of dialup or ISDN. When the end of fixed
wireless comes, nobody will mourn that either. The world will move on and
you'll have to adapt to it.
But I'll be a lot more worried about Starlink if they get allocated more
spectrum. 2ghz sounds like a lot, but not that much compared to what
they're trying to do.

It will be a challenge for sure, but in cases where WISPs can offer
100mbit+ speeds to customers (usually due to few/no trees), they should be
able to compete fine.

Or cases where customers are surrounded by trees and Starlink won't work
- but in those cases they need to be ready to spend up to a few thousand
dollars for a tower for WISP CPE.

So Utah had an average of 1391 new cases/day 30 days ago.

Today we are averaging 587.

The trend line looks linear...

A drop of 804 cases per day in a month. Average reduction of 26.8 new
cases per day.

26.8 * 31 = 830

Looks to me like we will run out of new cases before the end of the

thanks everyone.

it's been a crazy rockin' and rolling time at our company lately.
We've been awarded 3 state grants to help deploy fiber.
Also we've been participating in a CARES act program to deploy broadband
using our existing service.
We've taken like 300 orders in 2 days.

I was supposed to take off this week for my birthday.
Instead it has been postponed by two weeks.

I think it's higher than that.

Re: [AFMUG] billing again

2020-08-16 Thread CBB - Jay Fuller

apparently not illegal anymore, lots of vendors here are now passing along
their credit card processing fee right to you on the charge slip.

Charles has not been involved with IPPay for some time. Sonar is
$1.25/sub/month up to 5000 then it drops in tiers. Not sure about Emerald. UCRM
is free but who knows if it will be around in a few years or even tomorrow.
Ivan (Freeside) has not been around for a few years. Not sure what happened to
him, but he quit coming to the Wisp trade shows and stuff. But, Freeside is
"free" if you can get it set up with the ambiguous instructions, or you can pay
a "support" contract, but his main dev/support guy Jeremy went to work for Matt
Larson a couple years ago. I really don't know if Ivan even still maintains
stuff or not. ACH is a little cheaper but more difficult to track. YOu will get
approvals and then when it goes to settle in 24-48 hours the money will not be
there and it will decline. I think IPPay will now send you an email or
something, but I don't believe anyone has a way to automate that failure to pay
in their billing system so it requires effort to make sure you are getting your
money. It is illegal to charge to take credit cards, but you can give a
discount for paying by check or cash.

Does that muddy the waters sufficiently?

So what is the relative costs of the different billing systems.

I see platypus is free up to 100 subs then $104/month up to 250. Required
ippay. Does Charles Wu still own ippay?

What are the costs of the others?
Sonar
Emerald
UCRM

The one Ivan sells. Not sure of the name.
Others?

Is ACH cheaper than credit cards from a fee/royalty point of view?
If so can you force a 100% ACH on the customers or will that be
problematic.
I could always leave it up to them to pay any way they want but charge a
surcharge for credit cards.

Send me a check, drop by with cash, set up auto bill pay with your bank...

Anyone have anything to recommend?
I saw the Ronda Rousey documentary last night. It was well worth
watching.
Death of Stalin was good.
Starting to watch Killing Eve.
Devs just got weird. Meh
Westworld is getting weird too.
Billions starts up again soon... that is one of my favs.
Little fires was interesting in the beginning but became too much of a
chick flick for me at the end.
I like High Maintenance.
Better call Saul is coming to and end... sob...
Homeland is ending this week ... sob ...
BlackAF is interesting. Especially if you read up on the
creator. He did Blackish. I think I will tire of it soon.--
