Hello Dane,

It probably was the ATR 2100 which is the first mic I purchased. However, it’s
noise floor is pretty bad. I recently obtained a used Shure SM58 which is far
superior. I purchased a used Shure because it was declared to be a genuine
Shure mic as the market is flooded with copies. What flattery.

I did think that the Zoom H6 could have been made a little more robust. I
appreciated your comments about the F8N. I wondered how much can you do via IOS
bluetooth connection? You said about the menu system being more comprehensive,
or at least that’s how I read your comments. Can these be changed over
bluetooth?

Thanks,

I'm in touch with a nice guy in America who is going to sell me a

what I'm looking for now is a fairly high quality body microphone

So what would you use in my position, visiting, New York for example?

I'd also welcome a recommendation for an external power pack for the

Any advice would be very welc

Dude I'm still so jelus. I so want 1 for the quality. Don't get me wrong
I love my H6 and I do love it's sound. But the F recorders seem to be so
close to Sound Devices stuff. I'm looking at the $600 new F6.

The Zoom F8n has a bigger learning kerb when it comes to the minu system but
that won't prevent you from using the machine.
The dials are easier to set on the F8N than on the H6 given that they use
pointers and are very stiff to move so they won't drift about unless
deliberately turned.
The Build of the F8N is far better and the F8N is a little bigger but still
perfectly portable.
One can control the F8N from an IOS device using Bluetooth, control from a
bigger external control panel via USB etc.
The F8N is a few levels above the H6 in performance and price but - if
you're able to afford it - then very much worth the extra layout.

I was going to get a Zoom but I was worried about how easy they are to
operate. I don't need the 8 but is it easier than the 6 to operate?

Re: [all-audio] Zoom F8n Outdoor microphone recomendation

2019-07-09 Thread Dane Trethowan
Always love to hear about new recorders too and I do very much love my Zoom F8N
as I did my Zoom H6.
I would - if I had my time again however - not have bothered with the H6 in the
first place for several reasons.
I do appreciate that for many of us - as was the case with me - that the F8N
might seem the impossible dream when it comes to price but saving for the F8N
is very well worth it.
Firstly the controls and construction of the recorder are far superior in my
opinion, the level dials are far easier to adjust if you don't have vision, the
controls on the front are marked for easier navigation which may be useful for
some people etc.
As for microphones? Well you have the world at your fingertips as far as I
know. I was looking for particular desktop microphones but I've gone away from
that idea now. I already have one Audio-technica dynamic microphone here which
was recommended to me in a Getting started In Podcasting article - can't
remember the model number at this time -.
The microphone unit has both an XLR and USB connection so I think I'll buy a
couple more and make a good job of it .
Each microphone comes with a small stand so they can be set on a tabletop or
you can go all out and buy a huge stand that the microphones can screw into.

vultages you want? I'll ask him. Also we may run into the fact that I don't
know if you are here in the USA are you? other countries may have other things.
I'm paying close attention to the new F6. It's small, it's got 6 XLRs all down
the sides and the coolest thing about it is that it'll do 32 bit lloat wav.
Also it's got duel A to D converters. So it's hard to destort it supposedly if
not next to imposible.

Hi Gena. Well welcome to the H6 club. I'l own up i too thought on it and
wrang my hands a bit because I can't remember menus like Neal Ewers. But
idmititly I'm spoiled by Plextalks. I got it though because Aira and
also because I do wana record in 5.1 surround sound. Just need the EX H6
and an external phantum supply and all's good. Well than also a DAW that
can take all 6 mono files and make them 1 single multi channal 5.1 file.

[all-audio] Zoom F8n Recorder and Zoom F Control App

2019-03-01 Thread Dane Trethowan
Wonderful stuff.

Here's a Youtube clip showing how the F8 Controller App can be used with the
Zoom F8n.

The Zoom F8N is an excellent audio recorder that has been discussed on this
list for quite some time and hello to my fello user of the F8N and my
sympathy to those who can only dream about owning one of these fantastic
units at this time, don't worry chaps you'll get there eventually as I've
done.

Anyway back to the point of the controller App.

I'm making an assumption that the App will be at the very least parcially
accessible as most IOS Apps are these days so assuming I'm right? Well the
App at the very least will give us easy access to some of the menu system
which can be access through the front control panel of the recorder but you
do have to remember the menu layout.

Anyway we'll see as I have to yet install the Bluetooth add-on.

Re: [all-audio] Zoom F8N Notes

2019-01-09 Thread Hamit Campos
Wow how big and heavy is this thing exactly? Cause out doors would
totally be what I'd try with it. I'd probabally set it up someware like
movie sound guys do though. Walking arround may not be easy. Especiially
if ya wana do stuff like ORTF the Deka tree and what not. Oh and true
7.1 surround sound with 8 powered condencers into all 8 XLRs. Man I just
need the EXH6 peace and a power box I found on amazon for phantum then
it's fully off to the 5.1 surround in full 96 KHZ 24 bits races with the
H6 here.

On 1/9/2019 7:15 PM, Andy via Groups.Io wrote:

Hi Dane and others on this list.

Sorry I've not contributed much to this thread for quite a while but
personal circumstances have forced me to do other things.

Firstly, Dane, I'm delighted you have also got an 8n.  As far as I
know, that's 2 of us so far on this list!.

There is a significant difference however, wheras you seem to have a
much better grasp  than I, in what you are doing, probably based on
more years of audio recording, I'm one of those guys who buy an H6 get
it set up and press one button to get what I want through the X Y or
Side clip on mics.

I understand that the 8n has capacity for doing stuff that would keep
all of us engaged for many years,  but all I'm looking for at this
time is the ability to record a sterio track at the finest quality I
can possibly achieve.

So I'm talking about a point and shoot high quality recorder.

More experienced members may be thinking of using combinations of line
in and XLR and good luck to them, but for me, If I have been asked to
record a quire , or a pub band, I can usually get very good results
using my H6 with clicp on's.

I'm confident that I will be able to do the same with the 8n, though
already accept that because of it's size and weight, it's unlikely
that I will be able to tramp the streets of Glasgow, recording street
bands and buskers. Therefor, I've already decided to keep my H6 for
out of door podcasts and only use the 8n for studio or indoor, pub and
table-top recording situations.

Not too bad a compromise giving the quality of the H6.

Along with my 8n I also purchased the adaptor, which would allow me to
use both my X Y and Side angle clips, but it's not quite as easy as
that.  I had also to purchase a 15 foot XLR cable and as the adaptor
weighs over 2 Lb's, the whole kit would come in at about 20 Lb's.  Not
too easy for portability.

I did buy the audio bag from Gear 4.  The price was £89.00 but as I
purchased a returned item, I got it for £60.  Never-the-less, I find
the bag too bulky for walking the streets and that's withought the
adaptor, or taking into my consideration, just how I'm going to be
able to manage my Guide dog!.

I'm going to make a rediculous statement here, buy stating that by
far, the very best recordings of out of door podcasts, that I've ever
made, was and still is, using, whait for it, a pair of BSM 9 binaural
microphones going through  an old Olympus DS 50!!! Strange but very
true !

With respect to getting a grasp on the geography of the 8n, I think
there has never  been anyone to compair with Neil Ewars, so with that
in mind, I've decided to pay my local bar-made some cash and instruct
her to describe, through my DS50, the right, left, top and bottom as
well as the front and rear sides.  To assist her she will have all the
paperwork that came with the 8n and if all goes well, I'll get her
again, to venture through the menue system.

Just a number of some of the many thoughts and fantacies that are
waiting out there for us to challenge.

So all the very best and be minded, I'm listening to every word you
and other list members are making conserning this thread. and I'll
pass onto the list any recordings the bar made may come up with.

Very best wishes for 2019 from Scotland with love.

Andy Logue.

Subject: [all-audio] Zoom F8N Notes

Hi,
I received my Zoom F8N today and yes I’ll probably need a bit of help
to get the machine going but after that I don’t think I’ll have too
many problems.
Firstly level adjustments it seems are controlled by analogue dials,
one dial for each track.
These dials have pointers so you know what position they’re adjusted
too, halfway is completely vertical.

The track selection keys are marked by a series of small dots each.
Turning the recorder on and off is different from all Zoom recorders
I’ve had in the past and is achieved by means of a small button in the
bottom right on the control panel which is rather cramped and contains
quite a few buttons, dials and knobs so if you have big fingers this
may take a little getting used to.
The sight of the F8N was somewhat of shock and is unlike all other
Zoom recorders I’ve seen.
The F8N is in a complete metal housing and reminds me of a small car
radio in shape similar to the one’s I used to mount in car

Hi there,
I’m about to post some more motes on the Zoom F8N which may help you.
I too will be keeping my Zoom H6 as its such a wonderful piece of kit.
You can use the Zoom SH6 etc capsules on the F8N and I have done so Today.
The Zoom F8N is the highest quality recorder I’ve ever used going all the way
up to 192KHZ and I’m not sure of the bit rate exactly but I think it may very
well be 32-bit.
Anyway look for my iMail which should be completed in a few minutes.

Re: [all-audio] Zoom F8N Notes

2019-01-09 Thread Andy via Groups.Io

Hi Dane and others on this list.

Sorry I've not contributed much to this thread for quite a while but
personal circumstances have forced me to do other things.

Firstly, Dane, I'm delighted you have also got an 8n. As far as I know,
that's 2 of us so far on this list!.

There is a significant difference however, wheras you seem to have a much
better grasp than I, in what you are doing, probably based on more years of
audio recording, I'm one of those guys who buy an H6 get it set up and press
one button to get what I want through the X Y or Side clip on mics.

I understand that the 8n has capacity for doing stuff that would keep all of
us engaged for many years, but all I'm looking for at this time is the
ability to record a sterio track at the finest quality I can possibly
achieve.

So I'm talking about a point and shoot high quality recorder.

More experienced members may be thinking of using combinations of line in
and XLR and good luck to them, but for me, If I have been asked to record a
quire , or a pub band, I can usually get very good results using my H6 with
clicp on's.

I'm confident that I will be able to do the same with the 8n, though already
accept that because of it's size and weight, it's unlikely that I will be
able to tramp the streets of Glasgow, recording street bands and buskers.
Therefor, I've already decided to keep my H6 for out of door podcasts and
only use the 8n for studio or indoor, pub and table-top recording
situations.

Not too bad a compromise giving the quality of the H6.

Along with my 8n I also purchased the adaptor, which would allow me to use
both my X Y and Side angle clips, but it's not quite as easy as that. I had
also to purchase a 15 foot XLR cable and as the adaptor weighs over 2 Lb's,
the whole kit would come in at about 20 Lb's. Not too easy for portability.

I did buy the audio bag from Gear 4. The price was £89.00 but as I
purchased a returned item, I got it for £60. Never-the-less, I find the bag
too bulky for walking the streets and that's withought the adaptor, or
taking into my consideration, just how I'm going to be able to manage my
Guide dog!.

I'm going to make a rediculous statement here, buy stating that by far, the
very best recordings of out of door podcasts, that I've ever made, was and
still is, using, whait for it, a pair of BSM 9 binaural microphones going
through an old Olympus DS 50!!! Strange but very true !

With respect to getting a grasp on the geography of the 8n, I think there
has never been anyone to compair with Neil Ewars, so with that in mind,
I've decided to pay my local bar-made some cash and instruct her to
describe, through my DS50, the right, left, top and bottom as well as the
front and rear sides. To assist her she will have all the paperwork that
came with the 8n and if all goes well, I'll get her again, to venture
through the menue system.

Just a number of some of the many thoughts and fantacies that are waiting
out there for us to challenge.

So all the very best and be minded, I'm listening to every word you and
other list members are making conserning this thread. and I'll pass onto the
list any recordings the bar made may come up with.

Very best wishes for 2019 from Scotland with love.

Andy Logue.

Ah cool. Ah another mic I'd be curious to hear which Neal did demo with
the H6 is the AT-4021. Since it's 2 AT-4021s that make up my AT-8022
stereo mic. Which by the way is the sucessor to the AT-822. Which is
another mic I love to hear Neal demo. As for his dinamics I kinda like

Re: [all-audio] Zoom F8N Notes

2019-01-08 Thread Hamit Campos
As for his dinamics I kinda like
the Beta 58A.

I'd love to hear the Rode NT1-A into this thing. That's my favorite of Neal's
mics. I'd love a pare of NT1-A's

Hi,
I received my Zoom F8N today and yes I’ll probably need a bit of help to get
the machine going but after that I don’t think I’ll have too many problems.
Firstly level adjustments it seems are controlled by analogue dials, one dial
for each track.
These dials have pointers so you know what position they’re adjusted too,
halfway is completely vertical.
The track selection keys are marked by a series of small dots each.
Turning the recorder on and off is different from all Zoom recorders I’ve had
in the past and is achieved by means of a small button in the bottom right on
the control panel which is rather cramped and contains quite a few buttons,
dials and knobs so if you have big fingers this may take a little getting used
to.
The sight of the F8N was somewhat of shock and is unlike all other Zoom
recorders I’ve seen.
The F8N is in a complete metal housing and reminds me of a small car radio in
shape similar to the one’s I used to mount in car dashboards when I was working
at Hillman Spares all those years ago.
The design is straight forward, the front panel being taken up by the display
on the left and the control panel on the right.
On each side are the various XLR/TRS inputs, outputs, USB socket and SD card
slots.
On. The back are 2 BMC sockets and the Zoom Capsule connector along with a DC
input for the supplied power adapter and battery door screw.
The Battery door opens on the bottom of the recorder for the insertion of 8 AA
batteries for portable use.
The F8N sits proudly on a desk or a table curtesy of the 4 square rubber feet
in each corner.
So that’s as far as I’ve managed to get at this stage and I’ll write more as I
progress.

[all-audio] Zoom F8n MultiTrack Field Recorder | Zoom

2018-06-24 Thread Dane Trethowan
Here’s the product page for the Zoom F8N from the Zoom web site.
The arrangement for headphones seems incredibly flexible, the ability to route
tracks of your choice to either left or right channels, tones for low battery
and so on.
