I do not believe that will happen but at least you heard of me. Have a look at Apple and make users WANT or EVEN CRAVE FOR OOo! Remove the tons of features that only confuse the user and keep just the most important menus, tools and preferences. Redesign the UI to make it look like an Apple product (or, at least, Windows-like). Make it responsive and easy to use. Integrate Google Docs and/or Zoho Docs. Let users access their documents through their mobile phones. Then promote it aggressively and SELL it for five bucks. And please do not wait for another two years to implement these changes. In two years everything is in the cloud and OOo will struggle again to keep up with the industry. OOo deserves that. [sc-issues] [Issue 114451] Raise the 512 token limit in OOo Calc formulas
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=114451 Issue #|114451 Summary|Raise the 512 token limit in OOo Calc formulas Component|Spreadsheet Version|OOO320m12 Platform|All URL| OS/Version|All Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|DEFECT Priority|P3 Subcomponent|editing Assigned to|spreadsheet Reported by|ghe --- Additional comments from g...@openoffice.org Sat Sep 11 10:58:02 + 2010 --- Hi, I'm working with very long formulas and I frequently bump into the 512 token limit in OOo Calc formulas, which raises the error 512. This limit seems somewhat arbitrary, and its value (512 tokens) did not change at least since OOo 2.3 (ie since 2007). The corresponding limit in MS Excel is in characters (ie not tokens): - Excel up to 2003 (ie in Excel 11 and earlier): 1024 characters - starting from Excel 2007 (ie in Excel 12 and 13): 8192 characters As a consequence, files created with Excel 2007 or 2010 and containing very long formulas do not open correctly in OOo: the formula will be cut after 512 tokens, raising an error. I attach an example of (admittedly useless) 8192 character long formula, to be pasted into A2 for instance. It works when it is pasted in an Excel cell, but will not work in Calc, because it has 7050 tokens. Now that we have 1 mega-rows in Calc files (which may seem useless to most users), would it be possible to also raise that limit to 8192 tokens (which will probably also seem useless to most users, but may be useful for some, and in any case enhances compatibility)? [framework-issues] [Issue 106262] pinning to task bar is wr ong
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=106262 --- Additional comments from nudim...@openoffice.org Sat Sep 11 15:14:35 + 2010 --- I believe that this issue is not a cricical defect, since you can launch programs in start menu or by clicking desktop icons without problem, but it's not just about pinning the wrong icon to the taskbar. When I use multiple OO.o programs at the same time, icons of the different programs (e.g. Writer and Calc) in the taskbar simply merges into the icon which I launched first. This makes me confusing and misleading every time. I've found multiple threads complaining about this issue in the English user forum, (http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26289 http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28168 are two of them) and other websites. I understand that this is about the framework of the program, which uses soffice.bin for the main process, but this really is misleading users. Who would want to find his/her Writer icon in the taskbar stuck with the Calc icons? I hope there is the way to solve or work around this issue. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. The problem is that clicking Change All does not actually make all the changes when you click the button. The label suggests that clicking the button will apply the correction to the entire document, but if you close the spellcheck before it has searched the entire document, then some corrections may be missed. [graphics-issues] [Issue 114200] impress provides only lim ited ways of specifying the date/time format i n corresponding fields
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=114200 --- Additional comments from climbati...@openoffice.org Sat Sep 11 16:58:03 + 2010 --- I'd like to second this motion. Just like the author of this bug report, I can see that Impress does not provide the same level of date/time format customization as Writer. This is my setup (although this issue clearly pertains to the design of Impress): OOo-dev 3.4.0 DEV300m87 (Build:9522) Windows Vista Home Premium - SP2 AMD Turion Dual-Core RM-75 2.20 GHz 3GB RAM 32-bit The way I see it, two related issues are being identified: 1. Impress does not support user-specified date/time formats (Writer does). 2. Impress does not provide ISO date/time format (-MM-DD) (Writer does) Attached you will find screenshots comparing the functionalities in each program. In case you need them, these are the steps to follow in Impress: 1. Create a new document in Impress. 2. From the main menu, select Insert-Fields…-Date(fixed). Note: any date/time format will suffice. 3. Select the newly added textbox and select the date field. (An easy way to accomplish is to do a Select All). You'll see that the field, which normally is shown with a light gray color, now appears with a darker gray color, because it's selected. 4. Right click on the selected field and you'll see that the available formats don't include the ISO format. Because Impress doesn’t support user-specified date/time formats, the only work- around I see for the ISO issue is that the “fixed” option is used by using the date manually (Note that Impress won’t automatically update it when the document is opened on a different date). As a follow-up test, I looked up what type of custom date/time formats are supported by MS PowerPoint and found that it lacks the same functionality that Impress lacks. (used MS PowerPoint 2007 SP2) I would venture to infer that this is the reason that Impress lacks this functionality, which is understandable. In my opinion though, this would be a good opportunity for Impress to add a unique feature that will help OpenOffice users and provide more customization than MS PowerPoint. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [graphics-issues] [Issue 100090] Impress showing blank sli de show
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=100090 --- Additional comments from zjj...@openoffice.org Sat Sep 11 18:52:59 + 2010 --- OS: windows XP SP3 v.5973 OOc Version: Dev_000330m6 Build:9524 Intel T2130, 2gb ram, intel 943 motherboard, intel GMA 950, 80gb hard disk no other application was running network connected I don't have the version 3.0.1, so I use 330m6 and 3.3.0 beta1 to test. But in both version, I can't reproduce the problem with the following steps: 1. opened the OOc presentation and created a empty slide 2. added a new slide and wrote something on both 3.saved the impress as .odp file 4. pressed F5, the slides showed perfectly 5. modified the transition to random and try again, it still worked 6. exit OOc, used MS powerpoint to create a .ppt file 7. opened OOc, loaded that .ppt file and pressed F5, no problem 8. uncheck tools/options/view/graphics output/use hardware acceleration 9. went back to step1 and retested it. nothing wrong then, I used DEV_3.3.0 beta1 to test it, yet the problem didn't occur. As wg said, after uncheck tools/options/view/graphics output/use hardware acceleration, slides showed normally and perhaps that's a hardware dependent bug. I agree so. Also, it may be resulted in drivers and graphic card configuration. Because I don't have another computer for testing. So, I think to do a following-test like this may help: update drivers and retest; change another graphic card and retest; set acceleration mode to D3D or OpenGL and retest. If this bug did exist , it would make users lose confidence on OOc as its basic job, to design presentation, did not work. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Spanish uses the latin script, thus the latin alphabet for alphabetical numbered lists (26 characters). Plus, it appears that the Spanish alphabet doesn't have 27 but 29 letters: a, b, c, *ch*, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, *ll*, m, n, *ñ*, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z The fact that the 3 extra letters are excluded, that no dichritical letters in other languages are used tends to confirm that only the latin alphabet should be used. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=110017 --- Additional comments from rajl...@openoffice.org Sat Sep 11 21:49:06 + 2010 --- I agree with the reporter about the issue that Impress doesn't consolidate the gradient features in one place in which causes complexity. OS: Windows 7 Professional Open Office used: DEV300m87 (OOo-Dev 3.4.0) Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 540 1.86 GHz 2GB RAM 32-bit Attached is a screenshot replicating the steps to work around creating a custom gradient background. 1. Create a new Impress presentation. 2. Under Format menu, select Area..., and then Area pop-up will appear. 3. Select Gradients tab and create a custom gradient. 4. Press Add after all of your changes and give the gradient a name. Then Press OK 5. Under Format menu, select Page..., and then Page Setup pop-up will appear. 6. Select Background tab, and change drop-down under Fill from None to Gradient 7. Select the gradient you just created and press OK. Tested issue with Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 2007 for Windows 7 The program has one place for gradient features and the interface is consistent whether it is changing the background or a simple shape drawing. Impress should provide a similar design or at least provide a link to Area to eliminate above steps 2-4. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. At first, I tried to replicate the bug on the version of OpenOffice I normally use, OOO320m18. I was unable to replicate any of your results other than test cases 3 and 4. Case 1: Two slides selected. No Problem. Case 2: Original slide, shift-clicked slide, and in-between slides all selected. No Problem. Case 3: All slides between first selected slide (on top) and last selected slide (on bottom) selected. Replicated just as described. Case 4: Unable to select anything with ctrl-shift clicking. I did not have any problems with nothing happening on a first click. Then, I downloaded DEV300m87 and replicated the test cases on it, and experienced the problems that were described and replicated all test test cases. I also experienced problems with nothing happening on a first click, just as described in the report. The program seems to handle simple ctrl and shift click selection when the second slide is after the first slide. Test cases 1 and 2 do not produce problems if the second slide is below the first instead of above. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=114447 --- Additional comments from r...@openoffice.org Sat Sep 11 22:46:39 + 2010 --- The Real Academia Española eliminated ch and ll from the alphabet at least 20 years ago (they are included as part of c and l, respectively, on the diccionario de la real academia española). Spanish is my native tongue. Even if I cannot find now a clear document (I'm living now at 15000 kilometers from my old text books), I clearly remember at school using ñ on alphabetically numbered lists... I'll look more deeply on this later (if I can gather some time), but the problem is more general: For instance, on Italian j, k, w, x and y are NOT part of the alphabet... - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [graphics-issues] [Issue 113754] Add sound to a presentati on slide
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=113754 --- Additional comments from kra...@openoffice.org Sat Sep 11 23:08:16 + 2010 --- OpenOffice Version Used: OOo-dev 3.4.0 DEV300m87 (Build:9522 ) Operating System: Windows 7 I was able to verify that Open Office Impress does indeed lack a recording feature by default. However, I was able to find an extension called eVoice that through minimal features allows you to record, play, stop, pause and add a sound file to a selected presentation slide. Although there is an extension that provides the lacked feature, it may be worthwhile to include a built in recording feature for Impress. This will save people from having to find and install the proper extension and also will put Open Office on even footing with MS PowerPoint which already provides this feature. Steps for adding the eVoice extension to Open Office Impress: Step 1: Go to: http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/eVoice Step 2: Click “Get it!”, a download window will pop up select “Save File” and click OK Step 3: With Impress already open, click Tools Extension Manager Add... Step 4: Browse for the downloaded EVoice.oxt file and click open Step 5: Restart Impress Step 6: Select the presentation slide you wish to record and add a sound clip to Step 7: Click eVoice Insert (From here you can Record, Play, Stop, Pause) click okay when finished Your newly recorded sound clip will be added to your currently selected presentation slide. When the slide-show is viewed (F5) the sound clip will play when it reaches the slide that contains the clip. Attached below is a screen-shot of what this extension looks like after clicking eVoice Insert. Alternatively, you can add a pre-recorded sound file to a selected presentation slide. An example of how to do this with the default sound recorder provided with windows is described below. Example steps for recording (out of Impress) and adding the sound file to an Impress presentation slide: Step 1: Open Sound Recorder (comes default with Windows) Step 2: Click Start Recording Step 3: Record a verbal test statement, and click stop recording Step 4: A “Save As” window will pop up, give the file a name and click save Step 5: With an Impress document open, select desired slide and click Insert Movie and Sound Step 6: Browse for your test recording, select and click the open button. The pre-recorded sound clip will now be added to the currently selected presentation slide. When the slide-show is viewed (F5) the sound clip will play when it reaches the slide that contains the clip. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [graphics-issues] [Issue 26862] occasional text flow wrapp ing in a slide

I found one: http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=usersmsgNo=120036 “Yes, there is a way to do this. Create a frame in Writer with the text and picture. It might help to anchor the picture as a character. This makes it easier to set the spacing around the picture. Also set the wrap for the picture as Page Wrap. Then copy the entire frame onto a slide. Finally, you will have to double click the frame on the slide to make adjustments to what is shown within the frame. When you are finished, click on the slide outside the frame to bring you back to the main Impress window. You might need to play around with this for a little while, but it can be done.” This can be done using the following steps: 1. Create a new document using OO Writer 2. Click the “Insert” menu tab 3. Choose “Frame” from the drop down menu 4. Insert a picture in the frame (somewhere besides the top-left) 5. Right-click the image. Choose “Wrap” → “Page Wrap” 6. Add some text to ensure that it does in fact wrap around the image. 7. Select the Frame box and copy it. 8. Paste it onto a blank slide 9. Double-click the frame to adjust view The adjusting in this method is very frustrating and glitchy and caused me to eventually give up, just as most users probably would. I believe that this an important feature to many users such as riffraff. You guys have the feature working in Writer and working well. If it could be implemented somehow in Impress it would help users more efficiently and effectively make presentations and slide shows. It is a crucial feature to making professional looking slides, which is the image that Open Office wishes to have. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [graphics-issues] [Issue 100090] Impress showing blank sli de show
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=100090 --- Additional comments from brainfreez...@openoffice.org Sun Sep 12 01:08:49 + 2010 --- OS: Win 7 32-bit OOo version: Developer snapshot 330m7 Graphics: ATI Radeon 3100 (thought this might be pertinent considering it might be a hardware problem) I was able to recreate the error using these steps: -Made a new presentation -Made 2 slides with some writing on them -Saved as .odp and exited -Reopened, and immediately pressed F5 -On my initial run, the screen flashed black and white for several seconds, then after some clicking showed the slides -Continued opening, reopening, pressing F5 and the slide show button, and unchecking and rechecking the use hardware acceleration box, but could not repeat the several-second black and white flash. -Instead every time it went to slide show there was a very, very short flash of black and white and the slides immediately appeared. My error appeared when I pressed F5 right when the project loaded. Maybe this problem has to do with the way Impress loads its presentations? It might not initially load the tools needed to start the presentation but instead start loading those tools once the project is displayed. It might be a hardware implementation problem like previous posters mentioned, though disabling the use of hardware acceleration produced no difference for me. (The initial test where the problem occurred was using hardware acceleration though.) It seems like this might be a duplicate error to Issue 101208 like previously mentioned, but that issue is closed now and I still am getting that error in the latest build (I updated the beta of OOo right before testing this error). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [graphics-issues] [Issue 113226] transition sounds lost wh en saving on Mac and loading on Linux
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=113226 --- Additional comments from jaguilar2...@openoffice.org Sun Sep 12 02:27:50 + 2010 --- Steps to replicate: 1. Create an empty presentation on MAC OS X. 2. Insert a new slide. 3. Under Slide Transition go to Sound and from the drop down menu select any sound (this will play when you transition from one slide to the next). 4. Save as .odp, and load the file in Linux x86_64 (I used Ubuntu). 5. Play the presentation, or simply check under Slide Transition under Sound transition sounds have been lost. Steps can be taken in the same order creating in Linux and opening in Mac, results will be the same. After some follow-ups I discovered that this issue is not only present between Linux and Mac, I replicated with Windows 7 (OOo version 3.2.0), XP (OOo version 3.2.0), Ubuntu 9.10 (OOo version 3.1.0) and 10.04 (OOo version 3.2.0); creating a presentation in any of these OSs and opening in any other OS different from where created the transition sound will be lost. This issue does not occur with .ppt files regardless of if they were MS PowerPoint created or OOo created. A presentation file created in Windows 7 in OOo with transition sounds retained its transition sounds when opened in MS PowerPoint as well as in OOo in MAC and vice-versa. Also, I'd like to add this is NOT data loss since the data is there; however, it is not read. After opening the presentation in Mac and reopening it in Linux again (where it was created) the transition sounds are still present. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
