I think part of the opposition from the amateur radio community comes from an attitude of certain cubesat users that they have a right to use spectrum which is specifically allocated for amateur use. All they do is claim that they're "amateurs" (by not being affiliated with government or industry) and the law appears to let them get away with it. If hams have objections to it, they're told to get lost by those same users, almost as if hams have no right to those frequencies. Then again, what do you expect from a segment of the population that regards amateur radio as an anachronism? 73s Bernhard VA6BMJ @ DO33FL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. By comparison, I know of a start-up that would air launch a cubesat for a 7-figure price, but it hasn't had a flight yet. At the other end of the scale, one group could do it for something like $60,000--but it doesn't have a rocket ready to go, either. Let's not forget that one gets what one pays for. 73s Bernhard VA6BMJ @ DO33FL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? It would be nice if what was advertised is actually what the company delivers, as it could provide a means by which amateur radio satellites could be easily and cheaply put into orbit. 73s Bernhard VA6BMJ @ DO33FL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. One solution is cheap launchers. There's someone who's working on not just a system but a methodology by which someone can send a payload into orbit very quickly. However, from that I've heard, he's a long way from that goal. Another is launching several spacecraft at the same time, much like what has been done in recent years. The SHERPA system that was recently announced is one possibility. However, should that malfunction, then all the satellites on board will likely be lost, which is what happened with the KickSat. 73s Bernhard VA6BMJ @ DO33FL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. I know of one such company. Its booster is several years behind schedule and has yet to fly. Its launch facility has still under construction, as far as I know. However, I also know of someone looking to put a bird into orbit and it appears that this company will put it there for them. From what I understand, the price offered to that client was, relatively speaking, dirt cheap. I guess someone's desperate for business. Personally, if I was doing something like that, I'd rather pay a higher cost but know that I'm dealing with a launch service that has a proven track record. 73s Bernhard VA6BMJ @ DO33FL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Sorry about my earlier empty message. I was a touch clumsy with my keyboard and sent it off while I was editing. Too much junk on my desk, hi. I listened to the CW beacon during the pass which finished here roughly half an hour ago. The signal was 48, but was not continuous like, say, the beacon for HO-68. I listened to the end of the transmission at 1843 but didn't copy too much as I was still tuning my radio to hear it. At 1845 UTC, it transmitted: UKUBE1020A078 At 1847, it sent: UKUBE1020A0F0 73s Bernhard VA6BMJ @ DO33FL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. I listened to the signal on CW between 1957 and 1959 today here in DO33. It was somewhat fainter than the previous pass with some more background noise. Towards the end of the window, I switched over to FM and heard it for a few seconds as well before I lost the signal behind my apartment building. Not all of the next generation is a lost cause. What surprised me was that I got the aforementioned reactions from--ahem!--engineering students or recent engineering graduates. When I started my engineering studies 40 years ago, I had been an SWL for nearly 2 years and had QSLs from a number of foreign stations. Even then, I knew I wanted to get my callsign some day. I haven't given up hope. I'm just saddened that amateur radio is viewed not as a technical activity that makes use of much of what's taught in university but more like an eccentricity. > > I just got back from the 38th anniversary reunion of the original > Homebrew Computer Club, a group from the '70's and '80's with similar > objectives focused on learning, experimentation, and mentoring. I often get a similar reaction when I talk about amateur radio, particularly from younger people. They can't quite grasp why I'd want to put together a station and, perhaps, talk with someone when there are easier ways of doing that. Even if I don't have any contacts, I like to find out just what the hardware can do and how far my signal can go. It's fun to know that I can reach a satellite that's, say, somewhere over the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia putting only 5 W into my Arrow yagi. Many peope, I suppose, have become accustomed to the plug-and-play aspect of electronic devices and expect to have clear 2-way conversations every time. Tinkering with something in order to hear or be heard is likely something they wouldn't like or would be too bothersome to them. Then again, my interest in radio began as an SWL while I was still in high school over 40 years ago and I listened to broadcasts from, as the song says, "far away places with strange-sounding names". It was fun bragging to my classmates that I listened to, say, Radio Australia, not that any of them paid much attention to it. 73s Bernhard VA6BMJ@ DO33FL ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. She not only had no idea what it was, she couldn't comprehend why anybody would be interested in it. Very quickly, she concluded it was--ahem--a "social network". (Yeah, right.) I would have suggested that she return her degree because she didn't appear to have learned anything. Her discipline, though, wasn't electrical, so it's unlikely that she would have learned anything about it during her studies. When I started my university studies 40 years ago, I thought amateur radio was the neatest thing and I wanted to get my callsign one day.
