[android-beginners] Having problems trying to find the right way to parse text files.

2009-11-12 Thread ben.k.mcken...@gmail.com
Hello all,

I'm trying to get a usable program for the Android to allow it to sync
with Emacs Org-Mode. I'm pretty good with Python, but Java is a new
beast to me. Currently, I've got it so that it can contact the server
and sync the files. However, now that I've got the files downloaded,
I'm trying to get it parsed and split into a ListView so that it can
be viewed and edited. (An example of what I'm trying to do can be
found here: http://mobileorg.ncogni.to/[1] ). The files each look like
this:

* Headline 1
Some Body Text
** (Headline 2) First Child of Headline 1
*** (Headline 3) First Child of Headline 2
** (Headline 2) Second Child of Headline 1
* Headline 2

I'm stuck figuring out the best way to store the data object-wise to
easily go through the headlines and children, and to pass the info to
a ListAdapter. Any thoughts?

[1] The MobileOrg software was developed for the iPhone, but it looks
like it's doing the equivalent of a series of ListViews. When an item
is selected, it show a ListView of the children of the headline.
Ideally, each ListView would open up all the children onClick(), and
open up a context menu onListViewLongClick().

[android-beginners] Re: Unable to update TextView on a scheduled-basis

2009-11-12 Thread Indicator Veritatis
Why, yes. The blog post is good. But it inspires me to wonder: what is
Guy's native language? I ask because he gave a classic learner's
mistake confusing the gerund with the participle.

I refer to:

Since everything happens on a single thread performing long
operations, like network access or database queries, on this thread
will block the whole user interface.

As it stands, 'performing' must be a participle, which leaves like
network access or database queries dangling without a role in the
sentence. But with moving just one comma (and adding the clarifying
parentheses), it now parses correctly as a gerund, to read:

Since everything happens on a single thread, performing long
operations (like network access or database queries) on this thread
will block the whole user interface.

I am sure many readers of this forum will find that version of the
sentence much more memorable as well as easier to follow.

[android-beginners] Puzzled By ImageView

2009-11-12 Thread mirage4d

Hi all,

My first post. Greetings.

I'm toying around with the Notepad tutorial and adding some
functionality. So far, I've successfully added a timestamp to the note
which is subsequently displayed to the left of the note title in the
listview after saving a new note. However, as you can see below, I'm
attempting to load and display a small .png file in the row as the
first element - no luck so far. It seems fairly straight forward from
the few docs I have found. The resource (yellowbutton) is created and
listed as a drawable in the R file after saving the image to the
drawable folder, and everything compiles fine. However the image
(yellowbutton) isn't displayed in the row. Perhaps ImageView isn't the
class/attribute I should be using? Any insight would be greatly
appreciated. Code is below. Thanks.

[android-beginners] LinearLayout View Tutorial, weight behavior

2009-11-12 Thread maximus-dev
Hi Everyone...

Very short background... I'm currently a C developer (not C++
unfortunately... so no experience with OOP) who writes homebrew for
the nintendo DS. I'm exploring moving away from that platform and
towards the Android.

That said, I'm doing as suggested at the end of the LinearLayout View
tutorial and modifying the weight values to see how it affects the
size of the columns and rows. The structure seemed very simple, so it
seemed obvious that modifying the first weight (the top half) to 2
should give the top section 2/3rds of the screen and the bottom only
1/3rd. Instead... it appeared to be reversed... the upper area had
become the smaller third (this is in the emulator... I do not have
actual hardware yet).

I tested the same idea on the color columns and the more expected
result occured... the columns with greater weight were now wider and
seemed to take up the correct fractional area of the screen.

Any particular reason for this behavior?

Thanks everyone,
Jeremiah

Re: [android-beginners] how to install the sdk in my computer?

2009-11-12 Thread ryan alford
I disagree. The SDK I downloaded was in a .zip file. I extracted it,
opened the directory, and I had to click the SDK Setup.exe before Eclipse
would see that I had it installed.

[android-beginners] Re: Help with installation on Mac.

2009-11-12 Thread Ram
Thanks. I just did something that I should've tried right away. I
deleted the entire installation, and re-installed by expanding the zip
file. This time I left the outside folder name intact (I changed it
when I'd installed the previous time). So, when I tried to add
packages - I was able to see the platform packages fine now, and
downloading and installing them went on smoothly..

On Nov 11, 11:55 am, Shadana shadana.my...@gmail.com wrote:

  - Clicked on Available Packages in the left column
  - Clicked the dropdown arrow to the right of the checkbox. It should
 display all the APIs and Platform.
  - Select the ones you want to install and click Install Selected.

 I remembering see that error when I clicked the arrow next to the /
 repository.xml line without selecting any platforms below it.

 The AVD window will remain empty until you install a platform.

 Let me know if that helps.

  reason: HTTPS SSL error. You might want to force download through HTTP
  in the settings.

  I don't understand why I should be getting this error in the first
  place.  However, since I couldn't fix it, I tried changing the https
  prefix to http.  This time, I got one step further - it was able to
  show available packages - but these packages are only API packages and
  the USB package.  It doesn't show the platform packages which are
  required for the API packages to work.  When I go ahead to install
  these anyway - the installation fails because there are no platforms.

  Just to confirm - I don't see any files/folders under the platforms
  directory.  List of AVDs in Android UI is empty as well.

  After spending nearly two hours trying various combinations of this
  and researching online, I am at my wits end, so any help is quite
  appreciated!

  Thanks,

[android-beginners] Choice of API Level

2009-11-12 Thread Kevin
The developer guide recommends choosing the lowest API level your
application can support. However, the current SDK only includes
images down to level 2. What about level 1? Aren't there devices in
the wild that will use the 1.0 Platform? If you want to target level
1, do you need to use an old SDK?

[android-beginners] Re: It there a bug in the1.6 Emulators in landscape mode ?

2009-11-12 Thread Ob1
I have worked this out now.

You need to make a new AVD for the emulator. In the options for the
AVD you need to add the keyboard option and then set this to be
false. This will force this AVD not to emulate a physical keyboard
and therefore show your keyboard in landscape mode.

[android-beginners] Google Gears on Android 2?

2009-11-12 Thread Earle
Both the Google+Android2 emulator and the real Motorola DROID device
seem to not be able to run the sample Google Gears applications.

For example, the sample
http://code.google.com/apis/gears/samples/hello_world_geolocation.html
displays a dialog prompting for the installation of Gears - selecting
'ok' redirects to a page that states that Gears is not available for
this platform.

When will Google Gears be made available on Android 2?

[android-beginners] android list targets FAILS

2009-11-12 Thread Benjamin Orchard
In the documentation, I read: To generate a list of system image
targets, use this command:

android list targets

this fails with the following error:
Error: Ignoring add-on 'google_apis-3-r03': Unable to find base
platform with API level '3'

It repeats this message 3 times: once for each level of 3, 4, 5.

I've tried adding android to my path environments, but it doesn't seem
to have worked.

I'm on windows 7 ultimate (64-bit). If anyone (anyone AT ALL) has a
solution to this, or even a clue as to what might possibly be wrong,
I'd be very appreciative.

[android-beginners] Re: how to hide keyboard when done typing

2009-11-12 Thread PJ
Holding the Menu button does not work on the Hero, either, which is a
phone that doesn't even have a hard keyboard!

After I published an app, I found out that Hero users couldn't input
any information into my EditText fields. (As a workaround I added a
button that allowed them to unhide/hide the soft keyboard. But it's
just a workaround; Hero users tell me that they are accustomed to apps
automatically showing the keyboard for them.)

I haven't gotten around to writing the logic to determine whether or
not to automatically unhide the keyboard, and I'm not necessarily
looking forward to it.

On Nov 11, 12:08 pm, Justin Anderson janderson@gmail.com wrote:

 I had the same problem at first. In order for the adb to detect T-

 1. Edit the adb.usb.ini (in home directory - ~/.android)
 2. Add 0x12d1
 3. Restart adb (adb kill-server / adb start-server)

 adb should now be able to detect the device but with incorrect serial

 Well, I'd suggest not to upgrade to 2.0 SDK unless you really have to.

[android-beginners] Looking for a developer to partner with

2009-11-12 Thread RWinfield
Hello,
I have been a user of the smartphone style products since the original
blackberries. I have used nearly every style of app available for the
droid market, and I know what works and what doesn't, and what people
look for. I have a few ideas that I have researched that are not
currently available for download on the android market, and would like
to see them come to life. Most of these ideas are game ideas that I
see people calling for but so far have not been produced. With the
experience I have, I believe these games would work best as small
seperate demo games, then packaged together for a charge that would
unlock full options and a leaderboard. I need someone who is getting
to be pretty solid at the android game development end of things to
partner with me. If the product is acceptable, I would pay the
posting fee to android market and split any profits from potential
sales. Please email me at rwinfield4...@gmail.com if you are up to it.

[android-beginners] Re: error when starting Android project in Eclipse

2009-11-12 Thread nwhitehead
What I have observed is that when adb does not have sufficient
privileges, the device window shows the connected device as:

??unknown

When in this state, attempting to run/deploy an Android application
from Eclipse results in a null pointer exception. This will also occur
regardless of the presence of other valid devices/emulators in the
device window, so I suspect that the deployer interrogates the list of
connected devices and throws the null pointer when it hits the
unknown device.

I am pretty new to this, but I outlined a work around that worked for
me here: http://notannoidwithdroid.blogspot.com/

[android-beginners] DCHP Options in Android 2.0

2009-11-12 Thread SteveEd
It appears that only a few basic options are enabled in Android 2.0.
Is this so? I just bought a Droid and am having trouble connecting it
to my work wifi network (it connects OK at home).

We are using a Mikrotik PowerRouter 732 with RouterOS 3.x to issue
DHCP. For our clients on our VLANs to find their way outside, we
issue a static route with DHCP. The Mikrotik unit 'pushes' this onto
all of our clients, until I started using the Droid. It doesn't seem
to take. I can connect to the network, get an IP address, but all
Internet traffic disappears at the first router.

Mikrotik uses a non-standard option, 249, which is in the private
range to issue this route. I've tried putting a static route into our
core switch, but have not seen success with that method yet.

[android-beginners] Eclipse plugin Archos skin : can't unlock screen...

2009-11-12 Thread Gyscos
Hello !

I'm new to android developement, and I'm currently trying to make an
application for an archos using eclipse.
To do so, I downloaded the archos skin, and it's working, but it's a
touch-only device with no button, so I can't press Menu to unlock the
screen...
Is there another way to unlock the screen ?
Or to add a menu button to the skin ?

Thanks !

[android-beginners] appwidget query

2009-11-12 Thread anand
Hi all,

I am trying to launch an app widget from another application.

On click of a button in an application, the appwidget is receiving the
message i broadcasted.

I have implemented the appwidgetprovider class.
In the appwidgetprovider class, in the onReceive function i am able to
get the broadcasted message.

My broadcast file is:

package com.example.broadcast;

import android.app.Activity;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.util.Log;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.Button;

public class broadcast extends Activity implements
View.OnClickListener {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */

public static final String ACTION_UPDATE_WIDGET =
Broadcast_Message;
public static final String MESSAGE = message;

public void onClick(View v) {
  sendBroadcast();
}

@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);

Button start = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button);
start.setOnClickListener(this);

}

private void sendBroadcast() {
Log.i(test, send broadcast);
Intent broadcast = new Intent(this, receiver.class);
broadcast.putExtra(MESSAGE, Bye);
broadcast.setAction(ACTION_UPDATE_WIDGET);
sendBroadcast(broadcast);
Log.i(test, after send);
  }

}

My appwidget class is as follows:

package com.example.broadcast;

import android.appwidget.AppWidgetHost;
import android.appwidget.AppWidgetManager;
import android.appwidget.AppWidgetProvider;
import android.appwidget.AppWidgetProviderInfo;
import android.content.Context;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.util.Log;
import android.widget.Toast;

public class receiver extends AppWidgetProvider {

public void onReceive ( Context context,Intent intent ){

//super.onReceive(context,intent );
String action = intent.getAction();
String message=;
//String packagename=;
int appwidgetid;

Log.i(test, message received);

if( Broadcast_Message.equals  ( action ) ) {

//String message;
Toast.makeText( context, Broadcast
sucessfull...,
Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();

if ( intent.hasExtra(broadcast.MESSAGE)) {

message = (String)
intent.getCharSequenceExtra(broadcast.MESSAGE);
Toast.makeText( context, message,
Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
message = message+in the for loop;

updateSampleWidget( context, appWidgetManager,
1,message );

}

}

private void updateSampleWidget(Context
context,AppWidgetManager
appWidgetManager, int widget, String text) {

 Log.i(test,In the update sample widget function);
 RemoteViews views = new RemoteViews
(context.getPackageName
(),R.layout.widget_provider);

 views.setTextViewText(R.layout.widget, text);
 //Intent intent1 = new Intent(context, broadcast.class);
 //PendingIntent pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getActivity
(context, 0,intent1, 0);
 //views.setOnClickPendingIntent(R.layout.widget,
pendingIntent);
 //appWidgetManager.updateAppWidget(widget, views);
}

}

The widget_provider.xml file contains the appwidget resource file.
The widget.xml file contains a textview element only.

The updateSampleWidget function is not getting executed.

Am i doing anything wrong here???

My questions are:
1. Is it possible to start an appwidet from the onReceive function?
2. Is it possible to start an appwidget from another applicaion by
sending and receiving a broadcast message?

Can any one help me on this?

Regards,
Anand

Looks like a treeview is how you want to display the data. I would store it
using a parent-child format.
I'm sure there is some code out there that parses XML, so take that code and
modify it to parse your files in the same manner.

 and sync the files. However, now that I've got the files downloaded,
 I'm trying to get it parsed and split into a ListView so that it can
 be viewed and edited. (An example of what I'm trying to do can be
 found here: http://mobileorg.ncogni.to/[1] ). The files each look like
 this:

 * Headline 1
Some Body Text
 ** (Headline 2) First Child of Headline 1
 *** (Headline 3) First Child of Headline 2
 ** (Headline 2) Second Child of Headline 1
 * Headline 2

[android-beginners] Getting layouts to share space

2009-11-12 Thread AliasXNeo
Hello,

I'm working on my first Android application which is basically a
specialized calculator for a specific card game. What I need is to
have two side by side tables of numbers (basically two side by side
normal calculators). So, imagine your typical calculator, then imagine
two of those side by side on the same form, that's what I need.

Now, I just started developing this week, so I'm still really new. But
basically I need to know how I can have two tables share equal space
in my LinearLayout. I want each calculator table to share equal space
(with a tad bit of padding in between them) in the layout, however I
have no idea what attributes to use to do this. Any help is
appreciated, thanks.

[android-beginners] Invoking a remote service in a different application

2009-11-12 Thread igar
Hi

I have an eclipse project with a remote service that exports an API

When trying to run the client it crashes and Android complains:

Unable to resolve superclass of Lse/remoteserviceclient/

My question is this:

What is the correct way of calling a remote service in a different
application?
The 'service project' is on the build path of the 'client project'.

Do I need to export the service application into a jar file and
include in the client project?

Thanks,

[android-beginners] Re: How much number of voices can android support for MIDI?

2009-11-12 Thread PJ
Look at: http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html

For specific number of simultaneous voices, I assume that it depends
on which file type you're using (e.g. MIDI, RTTTL/RTX, etc.) and the
CPU power for the specific device. For example, if you're using MIDI,
you can look at the MIDI specification.

Note that Android phones and most phones nowadays support
Truetone (i.e. wave-data based instead of note-based, e.g. 3gp or
mp3), which produces better quality sound, so these are popular.
Consider that as well.

[android-beginners] Changing view then sleeping does not show up on screen.

2009-11-12 Thread ElPollo Diablo
I have a simple app that just changes the state of an image when you
press a button, waits 3 seconds, then changes back. The problem I am
seeing that that when it seems to sleep without changing the view to
show the state change, then when it is done, it changes back to the
original state, so to the user, it looks like nothing changed at all.
I may be way off in what I am thinking, but that seems to be the case,
as I can tell the sleep is working.

The code I have for the on click listener is:

press.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {

public void onClick(View v) {
bButtonBlue.setSelected(true);

try {
Thread.sleep(3000);
} catch (InterruptedException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}

bButtonBlue.setSelected(false);

}
});
}

Any ideas that could point me in the right direction would be much
appreciated.

Thank you

[android-beginners] Re: Write a on sdcard

2009-11-12 Thread PJ
By the way, the emulator does not necessarily have an sdcard out-of-
the-box. If you look in the top left corner of the emulator screen,
you may see a notification that you do not have an sd card. So,
before launching the emulator, you may need to create an sdcard image
file to simulate that. For more info on that, see:
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/emulator.html

Also, you can use the adb shell command to get a command-line prompt
to the emulator and look around the filesystem to get a feel for how
files are laid out. For example, look at /data for system and
application data, look at /sdcard for sdcard data, etc. For more info
on adb, see:
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html

Hope this helps!

 button that allowed them to unhide/hide the soft keyboard. But it's
 just a workaround; Hero users tell me that they are accustomed to apps
 automatically showing the keyboard for them.)

 I haven't gotten around to writing the logic to determine whether or
 not to automatically unhide the keyboard, and I'm not necessarily
 looking forward to it.

I don't think so. If you want a landscape only app, I believe you can set

Re: [android-beginners] Changing view then sleeping does not show up on screen.

The UI won't update until after you leave the onClick method...

Either spawn a new thread or start a background service to do the waiting

seeing that that when it seems to sleep without changing the view to
show the state change, then when it is done, it changes back to the
original state, so to the user, it looks like nothing changed at all.
I may be way off in what I am thinking, but that seems to be the case,
as I can tell the sleep is working.

The code I have for the on click listener is:

press.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {

   public void onClick(View v) {
   bButtonBlue.setSelected(true);

   try {
   Thread.sleep(3000);
   } catch (InterruptedException e) {
   e.printStackTrace();
   }

   bButtonBlue.setSelected(false);

   }
   });
   }

Any ideas that could point me in the right direction would be much
appreciated.

[android-beginners] Re: LinearLayout View Tutorial, weight behavior

2009-11-12 Thread Indicator Veritatis
Hi-

The most likely explanation is that you did not modify the weight you
thought you did. The very first occurrence of the layout_weight
attribute is in the outermost LinearLayout, so it applies to the
entire screen, not to the upper half alone (the color bands). To
change the weight only for the latter, you need to change the SECOND
occurrence of the layout_weight attribute.

Of course, that still doesn't explain the reverse behavior you
described, but at least it is a start.

Now concerning your background: it is impressive that you have made
this much progress in Android w/o an OOP background, but you will make
it much easier on yourself if you take the time out to learn at least
the elements of OOP using Java before putting too much effort into
Android. All the Android documentation and tutorials do assume a
fairly high level of familiarity with these elementary facts about
Java.

On Nov 11, 3:09 pm, maximus-dev sylus.mcf...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi Everyone...

 towards the Android.

 Thanks everyone,
 Jeremiah

[android-beginners] Re: LinearLayout View Tutorial, weight behavior

2009-11-12 Thread Indicator Veritatis
Or so I thought on first reading. But no, I was misled by the small
frame in the tutorial. Now that I have it running in the emulator
myself, I see the exact same thing you saw.

OTOH, the behavior is closer to what is to be expected (based on the
tutorial) if you change from the default only the weight in the green
band, changing from 1 to 2: then the green band is approximately twice
as big as the red and blue, but the yellow falls somewhere in between!

It looks like the layout manager is not perfect.

Re: [android-beginners] appwidget query

2009-11-12 Thread Justin Anderson
What exactly do you mean by launching and starting an AppWidget?

AppWidgets can't be launched or started... they can be updated.

In the appwidgetprovider class, in the onReceive function i am able to
get the broadcasted message.

My broadcast file is:

package com.example.broadcast;

import android.app.Activity;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.util.Log;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.Button;

   Intent broadcast = new Intent(this, receiver.class);
   broadcast.putExtra(MESSAGE, Bye);
   broadcast.setAction(ACTION_UPDATE_WIDGET);
   sendBroadcast(broadcast);
   Log.i(test, after send);
 }

}

My appwidget class is as follows:

package com.example.broadcast;

import android.appwidget.AppWidgetHost;
import android.appwidget.AppWidgetManager;
import android.appwidget.AppWidgetProvider;
import android.appwidget.AppWidgetProviderInfo;
import android.content.Context;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.util.Log;
import android.widget.Toast;

public class receiver extends AppWidgetProvider {

   public void onReceive ( Context context,Intent intent ){

   //super.onReceive(context,intent );
   String action = intent.getAction();
   String message=;
   //String packagename=;
   int appwidgetid;

   Log.i(test, message received);

   if( Broadcast_Message.equals  ( action ) ) {

   //String message;
   Toast.makeText( context, Broadcast
sucessfull...,
Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();

   if ( intent.hasExtra(broadcast.MESSAGE)) {

   message = (String)
intent.getCharSequenceExtra(broadcast.MESSAGE);
   Toast.makeText( context, message,
Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
   }
   message = message+in the for loop;

   updateSampleWidget( context, appWidgetManager,
1,message );

   }

   }

   private void updateSampleWidget(Context
context,AppWidgetManager
appWidgetManager, int widget, String text) {

Log.i(test,In the update sample widget function);
RemoteViews views = new RemoteViews
(context.getPackageName
(),R.layout.widget_provider);

views.setTextViewText(R.layout.widget, text);
//Intent intent1 = new Intent(context, broadcast.class);
//PendingIntent pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getActivity
(context, 0,intent1, 0);
//views.setOnClickPendingIntent(R.layout.widget,
pendingIntent);
//appWidgetManager.updateAppWidget(widget, views);
   }

}

Regards,
Anand
