As many of you might have noticed by now, we have added a new
Resourcestab under

articles. We want your feedback to add more samples and tutorials to
it.. Please add/vote topics for new samples and tutorials at the link
here.
Please be very specific (like mentioning API or package or feature or tool
names) when you submit a suggestion.

Thanks for your feedback in helping us improve our Android developer

[android-beginners] This Week's office hours

2010-02-10 Thread Megha Joshi
Each week, we hold office hours in android-dev channel on
irc.freenode.netto get your Android application development related
questions answered.

They take place at the following time:

Thursdays 5pm to 6pm PST weekly.

You can use this tool to see what time it is in your timezone
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?month=2&day=11&year=2010&hour=17&min=0&sec=0&p1=224

Office hours are also listed on this calendar (which defaults to US
Pacific timezone):
http://code.google.com/events/calendar/

You can add it to your calendar from there, and if your calendar is
setup appropriately, it should show up at your local time.

See you there!

This still looks like a unzipping issue...you might want to try and download
sdk again, or search for other unzip utils for your OS.

You don't need javascript to check values locally for TextViews, any code
that you execute without sending http request is executed locally(ie. on the
device). You can just check if TextView.text() is empty before sending http
request to the server.

[android-beginners] Re: New to Android Install procedures

2008-10-03 Thread Megha Joshi
You will need the Eclipse ADT plugin if you are going to use Eclipse for
your development. If you are planning to use command line tools for
developing your apps, then you don't need to install ADT plugin. You will
find it easier if you first go through the - Installing the SDK, Developing
and Debugging and Hello Android sections at
http://code.google.com/android/intro/index.html.
Let us know if you have any specific questions.

[android-beginners] Re: :Help needed

2008-09-16 Thread Megha Joshi
It is not recommended to send the Cursor object between Activities. Your
sub-Activity, might not be int he same app, and so the Cursor would not be
relevant.
The recommended way to do this is to pass a content URI to the sub Activity
and let the sub-Activity do the query by itself.

If you know for sure that both Activities are in the same process you could
use a global Cursor variable, but it is a very fragile approach.

[android-beginners] Re: ADB Issues in Android 0.9 beta SDK

2008-09-08 Thread Megha Joshi
Try adb kill-server. Stop all emulator, eclipse and other processes using
adb. Do a ps -all and check that no other adb processes are running.
Then try again. Let us know if you still face the same issue..

For security reasons, you cannot intercept the incoming call in any way,
except for getting notified of an incoming call through
PhoneStateIntentReceiver.

It can send email through SMS to email gateway. There is no email client in
the current sdk , but the future sdks should have one.

Did you launch emulator with -wipe-data? Can you provide the logcat output?
You are also missing the tag for maps Api in your

android:permission is used to enforce a permission for your app...instead
you want to request a permission..so you should use tag.
Add this
above your application tag and remove the android:permission attribute.
See the permissions explanation below:

[android-beginners] Re: connection to a distant socket server

2008-09-03 Thread Megha Joshi
First, can your browser app on the emulator connect to the internet? If not,
check your proxy settings, there are quite a few threads on the forum on
setting emulator proxy.
Next, did you add tag to your app's
AndroidManifest.xml?
The new SDK requires that permission for network calls.

change your path to file:///sdcard/test.txt ...Android filesystem is
different from your machine's filesystem so file://home/sdcard.img/test.txt.
wont work.
You can browse the android filesystem from DDMS file explorer...

adb shell sqlite3 does not work in the current sdk...try the workarounds

You should not use openOrCreateDatabase() directly, instead use
SQLiteOpenHelper for opening and creating databases.
See the NotePad tutorial code, it has been updated to use SQLiteOpenHelper.

 and finally, do you have to

2008-08-27 Thread Megha Joshi
Did you load the sdcard to emulator? for detailed instructions see the link
below:
http://code.google.com/android/reference/emulator.html#sdcard

How do you view the files in emulator?
The emulator does not have a file browser...you will have to use File
Explorer in DDMS:
http://code.google.com/android/reference/ddms.html

For both issues, the answer is you need to press KEYPAD_7, F11, KEYPAD_9 or
F12 key to simulate opening the keyboard before you can type anything ...

[android-beginners] Re: Can't build HelloAndroid on debian edge !

2008-08-26 Thread Megha Joshi
Were you able to successfully install both the new sdk and plugin as per the
instructions below?
http://code.google.com/android/intro/installing.html

To ensure that your android environment is setup correctly, can you do the
following:
1) In Eclipse, select New-> Android Project
2) Fill in the app name, activity name, package name, etc.. in the New
project dialog
3) Right click this project and select Run as android application

This should start a new emulator ( if its not already running) and display
"Hello World, Test" on the emulator screen.
Let me know if this worksIf you see the same error...send the logcat
output...

To add, do you see any error on top of the Preferences dialog?
And if you downloaded the plugin recently, you will need the latest 0.9 SDK,
m5 will not work.

2008-08-18 Thread Megha Joshi
Hi,

I noticed you had a question on installing the sdk/plugin this morning...

Let me know if this works

[android-beginners] Re: Streaming in android

2008-06-24 Thread Megha Joshi
It is possible to play streaming audio and progressive streaming video using
the media samples posted to the android-developers group files section.

For creating progressive streamable video >>>one of the group users got it
working through Quick Time Pro and sent it along:

Here are the steps :

1. Open the video file in Quick Time Pro.

2. Goto File > Export

3. Select type as 'Movie to 3G'

4. Click Options

5. Select file format as 3gpp

6. In the drop down menu below the file format, select 'Streaming' from the
list of available options (Audio, Video, Text, Streaming, Advanced)

7. Select the required maximum packet size and maximum packet duration

8. Click Save

[android-beginners] Re: I failed to install ADT-0.3.3 !

 Hi,

 This happens because you did not uninstall the last plugin, but just
disabled it. What you can do is go to Help-->Software Updates-->Manage
Configuration.
 Click on the third icon on top( the tooltip for it should say "Show
Disabled Features"). Find you last ADT plugin and uninstall it.
 Then follow the steps you did earlier again. That should work.

[android-beginners] Re: how to create a widget dynamically after setContenView

2008-05-07 Thread Megha Joshi
You can always create layouts programatically, and it is also possible to
add widgets programatically to the layouts declared in xml files.
All widgets provide constructors which you can use to create them
programatically..There are methods corresponding to each xml attribute for
any widget, so you can set properties programatically. Check out the
documentation on widgets for those.

For example, you can add a TextView to your xml declared layout as follows:

LinearLayout l = (LinearLayout)findViewById(R.id.widget27);
TextView label = new TextView(this);
label.setText("test");
l.addView(label, new LinearLayout.LayoutParams(
LinearLayout.LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT,
LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT));

Hope that helps.

[android-beginners] Re: problem facing with playing videos in androids

2008-05-05 Thread Megha Joshi
The 3gp files should not give any issues with MediaPlayer or VideoView APIs,
Could you attach your 3gp file, so that I can test it on my end?

Thanks,

Hi Chad,

What is the error that you are getting?
It is not recommended to use ViewGroup directly, you may want to use one of
the Layout classes instead, please see the ApiDemos.
I also noticed you have declared the TextView tv twice.

Thanks,

qwerty key is very simple -- it uses the key character map. We have basic
support for that now, via the InputMethod interface <
http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/text/method/InputMethod.html>,
but we don't have support -- yet -- for supplying them system wide. Right
now it has to be built into each app.

[android-beginners] Re: CheckBoxified List

2008-04-16 Thread Megha Joshi
Hi,

I think you are not making the ListAdapter correctly, I tried substituting
CheckBox for TextView for mDialogue in ApiDemos>Views>List4.java and it
gives a "checkboxifiedlist".
You may want to try that.

Thanks,
Megha

[android-beginners] Re: Retrieve tables in SQLite db

There isn't really an API to access the list of existing tables in a
database. You can run a query a special table to find out that info
using standard SQL. See item 7 at http://www.sqlite.org/faq.html

[android-beginners] Re: How to Create a Context

2008-04-10 Thread Megha Joshi
Hi Ray,

The Activity and Service classes are subclasses of Context. So you can refer
to the Context object by using the "this" object reference in OnCreate()
method of you Activity or Service.
Also, you would use broadcastIntent() if you want an IntentReceiver in the
other application to receive the data, but if you want an Activity in the
other application to receive that data you can use startActivity()(with
NEW_TASK_LAUNCH flag) instead. In both cases you will make an Intent object
and put data in its Extras bundle.

Thanks,
Megha

[android-beginners] Re: Concurrent DB Access

2008-04-07 Thread Megha Joshi
Hi Michael,

The 'could not open field slot' error might be due to a single query
returning more than 1MB of data, this is a known issue and has been fixed.
The fix will be released with the next release of the SDK.

SQLiteDatabase does full database level locking, so there shouldn't be any
problems with concurrent access going on. The background service queries
should be run on a seperate thread to avoid blocking the UI. The
AsyncQueryHandler class can be used for constructing non-blocking queries
without writing the threading code yourself.

Thanks,
Megha

[android-beginners] Re: Using external resources

2008-04-03 Thread Megha Joshi
 Hi,

 I don't think it is possible to link a archive file of resources with a
pre-built application. The resources are built with the application as
stated in the
Resourcesdocumentation
below:

*An application's resources are compiled into the application binary at
build time for you by the build system. To use a resource, you must install
it correctly in the source tree and build your application. As part of the
build process, symbols for each of the resources are generated that you can

[android-beginners] Re: About bullets

2008-04-01 Thread Megha Joshi
  Hi,

  You may want to look at expandable lists( these come close to bulleted
lists):

http://code.google.com/android/samples/ApiDemos/src/com/google/android/samples/view/ExpandableList1.html

  Android does not have any other view for using bullets(if you are talking
about using html /, you can use the webview).

  Thanks,
  Megha

[android-beginners] Re: how to show alerts

2008-04-01 Thread Megha Joshi
Hi Raul,

You could use the Toast.cancel() or Toast.setDuration() method to dismiss
the alert programatically.
To call Toast from a thread other than the main UI thread you can create a
handler in the main UI thread, and then post the runnable in which your
Toast is created to this handler.

 final Handler mHandler = new Handler();

   Thread t = new Thread() {
   public void run() {
   mHandler.post(mUpdate);
   }
   };

   t.start();
   }

   final Runnable mUpdate = new Runnable() {
   public void run() {
   Toast.makeText(Spad6.this, "New message",
   Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();

   }
   };

Thanks,
Megha
