No, I was merely saying that some of the content there is still

This is because, ages ago, there was a source code repository associated

Any idea where I should get those filters now?

Honestly I have no idea. The old infrastructure was shut down and we
only imported the web pages into the new repository. Perhaps Svante (in

Do we have a way to automatically produce a 4.0-compatible extension
starting from a 3.x extension?

I'm quite concerned to leave hundreds of extensions behind and asking
their authors to upgrade them. Some of the most popular extensions are
not very actively maintained, so we should definitely think about fixing
the 10-20 most popular extensions by the time 4.0 is released.

Reading the issue, I assume dictionaries are not affected since they

Then of course I don't know how much of this is realistically

right one, for any follow-up, is yet another one, i.e., the Localization
mailing list:
http://openoffice.apache.org/mailing-lists.html#localization-mailing-list-public

Briefly:

1) If you have an extension ready for the Tajik language spell checking,
you should upload it to http://extensions.openoffice.org/ ; this is a
preliminary step for including it in releases.

2) To have OpenOffice released in Tajik, you will have to complete the
translation we have on file. This requires a number of steps, as we
don't have a team actively working on Tajik now: first you should write
to the localization mailing lists saying that you would like to complete
the Tajik (tg) translation; then we will import the current Tajik
translation into Pootle, our translation system
https://translate.apache.org/projects/aoo40/ so that you can continue
it; and we will also create an account (or several accounts if you are a
team of several people) for you.

3) Once the OpenOffice translation into Tajik is complete, packaging the
dictionary with it is trivial and we can take care of it with minimal
effort.

- Provide an update of the Oracle PDF Extension with the only
   modification of the now missing

Well, both approaches can coexist, with proper timing.

1) In a first phase, take care of the 3.x users; publish a minor update
that simply introduces the maximal version and at the same time make
sure to blacklist PDF Import in the 3.x->4.x profile migration starting
with OpenOffice 4.1. This is probably easy since (access privileges
aside) it is probably just unzipping, updating the description.xml file
and repackaging with no need to rebuild.

2) Then, after (say) one month, that would be helpful to 3.x users to
get the newer version, the 4.x version can be added to that page (this
would be your version, but rebuilt with a version number that is higher
than the version in step 1, and with the same identifiers used by PDF
Import).

Indeed it will never happen that a user can update PDF Import to the
4.x-compatible version without updating OpenOffice, so preserving the
Extension ID is not that important and can also be avoided. But offering
all 3.x and 4.x versions on the same page would be helpful to users.

xStore->storeToURL( OUString::OUString(uval,nLenOfWideCharStr),
storeProps );

instead. This sets the string length explicitly instead of relying on
finding a trailing zero.

Hope that helps.

Oh! Since when is this known? Where else is this important piece of

cause an error and prevent installation. It does not say that one can't use
any other token than "all". - OK, I see now that it follows logically, but
it's not very obvious, isn't it?

Indeed it's not obvious. This must be fixed.

Shouldn't this fact be mentioned very explicitly in the DevGuide? And in the
'Known Issues' part of the Release notes for AOO 4.1 and 4.1.1?

Well, since you now know what's useful to developers, just propose a
text and we can add it (the Release Notes for 4.1 contain user-oriented
remarks about this but indeed nothing that can help developers).

Or just ask and we will create accounts for you so that you can edit

IMO, no, that's not the place for such "peculiarities".

It can be a place until we still have the bug in our stable version. The
wikis support all kinds of "warning" paragraphs, and we could link to
the issue or include a very short text even if this is a temporary
issue. It's already fixed for the next release, but the next release is
not coming very soon.

IMO the Release Notes are targeted to End-Users, and adding this to the
"Known Issues" will only confuse End-User. An extension developer that
is developing a non-cross-platform extension for MacOSX should already
be aware of the switch to 64 bit

Adding a sentence like
  ---
Extension Developers should ensure that their extensions specify
platform="all" in description.xml, see
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124783

  ---
won't harm. I mean, if extension developers can't easily find this
information through other channels, at least users have a resource to
point them to.

OpenOffice community survey - Please take it!

2014-09-12 Thread Andrea Pescetti
I've prepared, with help from other community members, a survey to
gather some quick data about the Apache OpenOffice community. This
information will be used for my Apache Conference talk in November, to
assess how we have matured in these two years as a top-level Apache
project and whether we can consider the "setup" phase to be closed.

It's one easy, simple page:

Please take the survey now, your feedback is needed! Please answer also

(via different mailing lists).

If you have any comments, follow-up to the dev list only.

2014-12-07 Thread Andrea Pescetti
Reminder: one week left for submitting talks proposal for FOSDEM.
Deadline is Sunday 14 December. All details below and at

FOSDEM 15 will be held at the ULB Campus Solbosch on Saturday, January
31, and Sunday, February 1st, 2015.

Open document editors are coming again to FOSDEM with a shared devroom
which gives every project in this area a chance to present ODF related
developments and innovations. The devroom is jointly organized by Apache
OpenOffice and LibreOffice.

We invite submission of talks for the Open Document Editors devroom, to
be held on Saturday, January 31, from 10AM to 6PM.

Length of talks should be limited to 20 minutes, as we would like to
have questions after each presentation, and to fit as many presenters as
possible in the schedule. Exceptions must be explicitly requested and
justified.

Technical talks (code, extensions, localization, QA, tools and adoption
related cases) about open document editors or the ODF document format
are welcome.

Submissions must be done by the speakers using the Pentabarf system:
https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM15

While filing your proposal, please provide the title of your talk, a
short abstract (one or two paragraphs), some information about yourself
(name, bio and photo, but please do remember that your profile might be
already stored at Pentabarf) and specify what topic (Apache OpenOffice,
LibreOffice, other ODF editors, ODF in general...) your talk is about.

You do not need to create a new account if you already have one. If the
password has been lost, you can easily recover it.

The deadline is Sunday, December 14, 2014. Accepted speakers will be
notified by December 28, 2014.

You can send any questions to the devroom mailing list:

Sure. This only holds for talks in devrooms, as I just confirmed with

Talks about licensing can be submitted to the dedicated devroom (again,

It a separate event the day before FOSDEM. It's not part of FOSDEM, it

Whatever way you want to see it, I can only confirm that talks in the
Open Documents Editors devroom have to be technical and follow the

non-technical talks equally interesting (I gave two non-technical talks
myself during ApacheCon), but they are not for this devroom. Obviously,
I'm very open to both technical and non-technical discussions at any
moment during FOSDEM; these guidelines must be respected for the devroom
talks since these are the house rules, but for the rest we'll be free to
discuss everything!

I think it is simply a string, compared within OpenOffice using a string
comparison (which is not optimal: if you have version "99.0" and version
"100.0", version 100.0 comes before 99.0 since it starts with a "1").

I use ".MM.DD" like Marco, so "2015.05.02". It is fine to use "0.1",
"0.2" and similar but "0.9" is not considered to come before "0.10" so
keep that in mind. I believe more exotic numbering like "0.9-alpha2" is
not accepted by the Extensions site, but is accepted by OpenOffice.

It's been a few years since I last looked at this, but I don't think
things have changed much. At the time, I settled for using ".MM.DD"
and I've been consistently using that pattern.

2015-05-03 Thread Andrea Pescetti

On 02/05/2015 Alexandro Colorado wrote:

My biggest concern is that the
extension manager 'catch' the published updates correctly with the

Internally, this used to work this way (and probably still does): the
Extensions site advertises the latest version of its extensions (like,
it says, the latest version of hunspell.dictionary.english -this is a
made-up identifier- is 2015.05.01); OpenOffice does the comparison and
if it determines that the installed version is "older" then it proposed
the update.

In short: if you install version 0.9, then you upload version 0.10, the
Extensions site will advertise that the latest version is 0.10; but
OpenOffice will consider 0.9 to be "newer" (comes later in alphabetical
order) than 0.10 and won't ask you to update. Using a date-based schema
solved all these issues for me. This is why I use and recommend it.

1- effectively asking the entire extension developer community to adopt a
version scheme just so they can work;
2- having an "overlook"/mistake/comparison bug remaining in some code that does
not implement the intended action.

I'm not sure we have understood messages the same way.

I'm definitely not asking anyone to adopt a .MM.DD numbering scheme,
I'm just saying that I do so and that it works for me.

I think we all agree that any numbering scheme where alphabetical order
is equal to numbering order (e.g., version 1.000, version 1.001, ...,
version 1.009, version 1.010...) would work well with no surprises.

I though we had a bug with situations such as 0.9 -> 0.10; Stephan wrote

This will definitely need evaluation on the API list...

So: this is an incompatible change that was introduced in 4.1.0; your
suggestion (but we have no patches for it) would reintroduce the old
behavior for the Annotations (aka Notes, Comments) that were allowed
until 4.0.1, and use the new behavior only for the new

Your suggestion makes sense to me, but we will need that someone
