FW: Public permission group can't see attachments - SOLVED

2009-11-02 Thread Martin, Robert
This is embarrassing, but I'll spill the beans anyway for the benefit of
anybody who runs into a similar issue.

It seems that long ago, before I can even remember, we decided that we didn't
want the general public to see the attachments on this form. So we created a
special view in which the attachments were not included, that would appear
whenever someone with no permissions opened the form.

Dear List,

We are having problems with Public not being able to see Attachment Fields.
Both the Attachment Pool, and the individual Attachment Fields have Public
permissions. But if somebody with no permissions opens a form, sometimes he
sees a blank Attachment Pool with no fields, and other time he can't even see
the Attachment Pool.

If I give the user permission to one of the other groups with permissions to
the attachments, then he can see them with no problem.

Any idea what might be causing this?

C API integration question

2009-11-02 Thread William Rentfrow
Listers...

My current project has a developer who is integrating AR Server/AR User
7.1 with an Aspect ACD/IVR via the C API and VB 6.

We're using VB 6 to re-create the original screen pop app that we had -
the previous caretakers of this system had misplaced the full source
code but we had a skeleton that was nearly correct - time was short so
the decision was made to stick with that architecture (Yes, we're
already planning on replacing it, thanks :)

Anywaywhat the design calls for is opening the IM Incident
Management Console and populating fields with the incoming call data.
Depending on the call type the agent then takes appropriate action. We
are NOT trying to directly open a new Incident screen.

The developer has run into several issues using the API calls
LoadForm/OpenForm - both of them return errors indicating they are
wanting to be opened in CREATE or QUERY mode with appropriate parameters
for each mode. What he's really needs to do is open it in Dialog Mode
and do a set fields.

There are of course ways around it (opening a dummy Regular form and
adding an entry, etc) but we've run into related issues there too -
might be MS bugs, we're still checking.

So - if anyone has done a C API integration that opens a Display Only
window and sets a field - I'm REALLY interested in seeing your code for
that piece so I can pass it along.

Thanks in advance...

Re: C API integration question

2009-11-02 Thread Norbert Bolmer

Hi William,

if your application is running in the Windows User Tool, then I think
you have to use the ARS Automation to control the user tool. ARS
Automation can be used directly from VB.
You will find further informations in the manual C API Reference
7.1, chapter 5, page 391. There is also an example included.

To set a field in the current window use:

Open a new form with function OpenForm() or check the active form with
function GetActiveForm()
Use function GetField() (or GetFieldByID()) - this returns an Object
from class ICOMField

Set a new value for this object

Norbert

Any idea what might be causing this?

got blanked out somewhere along the way.  So I am trying again.

Hi,

Just tested some things.

I am working on ARServer/Developer 7.5.0 patch 3.

In the Run-If and Set/Push-Fields-If-Qualification, it still puts in extra
brackets:

What I entered:
'CU:ID' = $CU:ID$ AND 'CO:ID' = $CO:ID$ AND 'Status' = Active
After reopen:
(('CU:ID' = $CU:ID$) AND ('CO:ID' = $CO:ID$)) AND ('Status' = Active)

It seems like they did some efforts on the the VALUE in the
Set/Push-Fields Action.

The problem is that i does not work, the new BMC parenthesis optimizer is
faulty!!!

I entered:
(1.0 + 2.0) * 3.0
This is shown after reopening the filter:
1.0 + 2.0 * 3.0

They must take into account that the * has a higher priority than the +,
and put in parenthesis accordingly, if needed.

 Wow...ask a tough oneoktook me FOREVER to figure out
 Qualifiersbut here is basically what you need to do.

 A QualifierInfo object has three main parts, LeftOperand, Operation,
 and RightOperand. To explain these parts I will give you an example

 ('Status' = Fixed) AND ('Create Date' $DATE$)

 Ok, if that is your QualifierInfo object, here are your pieces

 LeftOperand = ('Status' = Fixed)
 Operation = AND
 RightOperand = ('Create Date'  $DATE$)

 So, what I have done in several programs now is to write an iterative
 subroutine, if you check the operation to determine if it is a
 relational operation (  = != etc).  If it's not, I throw
 RightOperand back into the sub till it is, If it is then you know you
 are down to a single operand, and then you can parse the field/value
 on left and right for what you want to check/test for.

 Please let me know if this helps anyit's still a bit fuzzy in my
 head, but I understand it well enough as it is to do what I need to do.

You probably need to install the 32-bit version of the X11 client libraries.
You would only need an X server running on the Linux box if you are logged
directly into the server. If you are logged in from a remote host with an X
server running on the remote host (e.g., your PC), then you don't need an X
server running on the Linux box - you just need the appropriate X11 client
libraries. Since Java is a 32-bit application, it will need the 32-bit version
of the X11 client libraries to run.

Does that make sense?

Re: Java API for ARS - How to obtain a Run-If line from an Active Link (for example)

2009-11-02 Thread Lyle Taylor
It's possible that that's the motivation behind how it's currently architected,
but it's not a very good excuse. The SQL will all get dynamically generated
based on the qualification tree generated by parsing the qualification string,
not on the qualification string itself. It's very doable to define
qualification strings so that operator precedence, etc., is in line with common
practice, and that wouldn't affect Remedy's ability to be DB agnostic in the
slightest. The only difference that it makes is that parsing the qualification
strings becomes slightly more complicated (but still very doable - there are
tools that will write much of this code for you - e.g., lex/yacc, etc.). Once
you've parsed the qualification string according to whatever rules you've put
in place, you end up with the same data structure that they currently have
which will then be used to generate the SQL just like they do now. The current
scheme is unnecessarily simplistic and actually makes the system more difficult
to use because of the excessive number of parentheses in qualification schemese.

They must take into account that the * has a higher priority than the +,

 A QualifierInfo object has three main parts, LeftOperand, Operation,

According to the Workflow Objects docs there is a operator precedence.

Operator precedence

When you use multiple operators to construct qualification criteria, they are
evaluated in the following order:
  1 ( )
  2 NOT (!) - (unary minus)
  3 * / %
  4 + -
  5  =  = = != LIKE
  6 AND ()
  7 OR (||)
Operators of the same precedence are performed left to right.
You can use parentheses in an expression to override operator precedence.
AR System evaluates expressions inside parentheses first before evaluating
those outside.

Part of the design of adding parenthesis probably goes back to when Remedy
supported using flat files as a database.

The current
scheme is unnecessarily simplistic and actually makes the system more difficult
to use because of the excessive number of parentheses in qualification schemese.

compete with how each DB processes SQL, or trying to anticipate how a receiver

From what I've been able to tell, there is no such thing as operator

on the parentheses which seems to correspond to the tree that their parser
build internally. There's a lot of room for improvement in the area of

I'll agree with that and take it a step further. I want it to only show the
brackets that I put there and not take them out or add new ones. They could do
that by simply storing the qualification text as well as its internal

Hi,

I agree, but why settle for the way AR Admin did it?

I think that ALL unnecessary brackets should be removed. I want to see
brackets only where they make a difference!

The normal way:
('Field 1' != $NULL$ AND 'Field 2' != $NULL$ AND 'Field 3' != $NULL$ AND
'Field 4' != $NULL$) OR 'Field 5' != $NULL$

AR Admin:
(('Field 1' != $NULL$) AND ('Field 2' != $NULL$) AND ('Field 3' != $NULL$)
AND ('Field 4' != $NULL$)) OR ('Field 5' != $NULL$)

DevStudio:
'Field 1' != $NULL$) AND ('Field 2' != $NULL$)) AND ('Field 3' !=
$NULL$)) AND ('Field 4' != $NULL$)) OR ('Field 5' != $NULL$)

 Not that I condone the practice, but I understand how it's doing
 it...this goes back to the discussion regarding how to parse a
 qualification. The 'dev studio way' is how ARInside has always parsed
 the qualification. It takes the left and right operand and puts
 brackets around them, then it parses again, and puts brackets around
 left and right again, over and over till it hits the individual
qualifications.  it's significantly 'easier'
 from a programming standpoint to do that than it is to do it the way
 Admin tool used to do itbut I agree it makes it significantly
 harder to read.
 I would say we need to open defects against the DevStudio and get it
 fixed.

 Subject: Developer Studio issue - auto grouping of qualification
 criteria

 **

 DevStudio is a great revolutionary tool compared to the good ol' Admin
 tool, but there is something that the Admin Tool is better at, by not
 doing it:
 the automatic grouping of qualification statements. Let me explain.
 When setting a qualification, whether for an active link , filter or
 table field qualification, or any qualification, DevStudio over
 groups the statements to the point where it is harder to see what it
 is.

 So for instance in the Admin tool, you can have this qualification:

 (('Field 1' != $NULL$) AND ('Field 2' != $NULL$) AND ('Field 3' !=
 $NULL$) AND ('Field 4' != $NULL$)) OR ('Field 5' != $NULL$)

 In DevStudio, this becomes:

 'Field 1' != $NULL$) AND ('Field 2' != $NULL$)) AND ('Field 3' !=
 $NULL$)) AND ('Field 4' != $NULL$)) OR ('Field 5' != $NULL$)

 Notice the extra brackets.

 This qualification is very simple, but as you can see it is more
 difficult to figure it out in DevStudio than the Admin tool because
 of the extra brackets. With complex qualifications, this becomes a
 real annoyance that really gets in the way of the developer, specially
 because the auto-grouping is done even before saving the active link,
 filter, table field, etc. This problem is magnified when dealing with
 the ITSM workflow, to the point that I find myself copying and pasting
 qualifications in Notepad to strip the extra brackets to be able to
 understand the qualification this is not good.

 This problem really needs to be fixed, or at least provide the end
 user with the option to turn this feature on or off. IMO, it should
 be off, so DevStudio behaves the same way As the Admin tool by
 default. So far it seems there is no option to turn this off, but if
 somebody knows a way, please let us know

 Guillaume

 Neither of the above syntaxes work.
