Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

@turtlepower17,Yours sounds more like an issue of trust as opposed to one of inability.  From all I've read in your above post, you've been gradually, subtly told and schooled and trained from an early age to trust nothing and noone; whether this was intentional or not is another subject altogether.  The disgusting aspect lies in that this kind of nonsense ends up making you question whether you can in fact, trust your own judgment, particularly if you have always been at a disadvantage in any respect.I was 10 years old when my O instructor decided she was going to deliberately drop me off by the side of a busy street in the middle or downtown area of a city I had never traveled alone, where I would then be told, "Your goal is to find JCPenney: I'll see you in awhile."  I froze.  "How in the world am I supposed to do that?"  I replied.  "I don't even have an idea where I am now, what's around me, which direction to go and what kind of landmarks I'm looking for!""You've been taught to ask for instructions and solicit assistance!  This coupled with your orientation and mobility training is enough."  and without much else, she sneaked off in the midst of all that sound, leaving me with the glaringly obvious truth that, unless I did something fast, I was going to end up standing there for at least an hour or so before she decided to give this stupid business up.That day was a day I'll never forget, because I learned a few things of great importance.  first, the fear of doing something is usually greater than the something you fear doing.  Second, humanity needs trust; people, marriages, families, neighborhoods and whole societies  can't function without it.  From schools and other training facilities to government to immense corporations, all have shown that honesty and integrity are essential in order to survive in a world poppulated with people just like you, yet different from you in many respects given that no two persons are entirely the same. Finally, in life, failure is entirely imminent if you do not plan to succeed, or to put it another way, if you aim at nothing, you're bound to hit it.  As long as we measure success based on the amount of things we've accomplished rather than the character with which we accomplish them, our story will always be one in which we strive to do more and feel like we're always doing less because there is always someone near or around you who is doing more than you, even if you haven't met them yet.  Should my success on ag net be determined by the fact that I've attained moderation duties, written a bunch of posts and banned a few offenders?  Nah, because Dark's been doing it longer than I have, and on top of that he helps moderate other places as well, and he has more forum Karma than I do, and Aprone has even more than that!  If I measure it based on the way I approach things, however, I find myself feeling successfull if I manage to help even just one person in a world of 7 billion plus individuals.  Sound like a shot in the dark?  Maybe, but it's less of a shot in the dark than you think, because at the end of the day, I was the one person out of 7 billion who actually helped.to conclude, while you may not have the power to decide that you're going to become the next president of the united states because so many people are fighting for that spot, you do have the choice to try.  Will you determine yoru success by whether you reach the whitehouse, or by the work you did, the people you helped, and the agendas and legacies  you've helped to establish?  Very few people know that I had first dibs on both sound designing and scoring the soundtrack for AHC; I say it with all modesty... I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to write a puff piece about myself as I honestly don't need nor want the attention.  If I determine my success based on the fact that I obviously did neither, I'm a failure.  A girl I had met just a little before being asked to work on the project got sick, was down with pneumonia and needed help with her child, her x-husband had just walked out on her leaving her in a heap of financial strain, and she was still trying to pursue a college education.  I left my home to help, ended up getting married, had a child, lost an apartment to a busted water pipe, lost another to an organization's greed, moved into  an old but mostly comfortable little house, braced for Hurricane Matthew, dealt with more flooding thanks to an old washing machine and an ancient garbage disposal, had another child, had an AC unit break down owing to a lightning strike or a tornado-I'm still not sure on which, was thoroughly banged, bruised and bashed by hurricane Irma, lost $400 worth of recently purchased groceries to the resulting power outage that lasted nearly a month, lost $200 more after the fridge mysteriously quit working, and somehow managed to start a contest in which my wife and I planned on

[[wow]] I had no idea Samsung keyboard was actually a freely open thing (I'm still pretty new to Android.) Assuming it's the same one that ships with the galaxy's then yeah that ones pretty good, definitely the one I can use the fastest on Android. I liked the idea of gBoard although it felt really laggy when dragging my finger around. I think someone said it was better in Android 8, but I can't confirm yet. I'm on an S7 and waiting for Oreo to drop. Their event is on Sunday, so hopefully it should start dropping not too long after that. I guess you could try fleksy if that's still a thing and you didn't mind experimenting. If it's like iOS then it's probably not terribly accessible anymore. I'm not really sure whatever happened on their end, but I think there were some pretty drastic changes made super quickly and since then we've been left in the dust. Oh well.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

I've counted people's responses. According to my addition, I believe that 13 people say they would like vision back, 5 are relatively neutral and 3 say that they do not want it back. There have been many stories here about incidents with the public and with blindness professionals. People have been made to feel inferior because of their vision impairment. They are seen as different, as objects of curiosity and as objects who can be conditioned into a certain mindset. People have also talked about experiments conducted on subjects to either force them to act in a certain way or to suggest that they act in a certain way. I would argue that some of the experiences people have described on this forum are analogous to scientific experiments. If someone wishes to solicit a certain reaction from someone, they have formed a hypothesis as to the result they will receive. In the course of testing this hypothesis, they would have to undertake an experiment. Some of the experiments that people have described have evidently had long-lasting effects, yet like the experiments others have brought up, they were done simply in the name of research or education. These experiments have forced their subjects to realize their limited use and value as a blind person.I want to ask a philosophical question that people are certain to have strong opinions on: Do people primarily want vision because they are reminded of their limitations as a blind person by the sighted world?

hey guys. I'm pretty excited to announce a new social hangout for everyone. I originally meant it as a replacement for the zone bbs, but I see that it can be so much more than that. The forum and pm system are currently the only functional aspects of the site, but games are coming soon, and not just one type of game either. word games, trivia games, and hopefully a variation of press your luck/whammy. I'm looking for new ideas, new members, and a great start to this place. I know some people don't like a forum environment, but this is still a work in progress. our goal is simply this, fun, friends, and an interesting new place. I'm holding a contest now. our 100th user will win a prize, which I will not disclose at the moment. Once again, that url is http://blindfunzone.x10.mx/forumhope to see a lot of you there.Eliza.P.S. I'm sorry the domain is so long, but my bank account restricted what I could buy. Hope to see you guys really soon. Feel free to email me with any questions.

hi,Due to the government time and again anouncing their plans to put in a draconian piracy filter,  that fingerprints content, as well as allowing so called rightsholders to harvest everyone's IP addresses in torrent swarms, not to mention to smarter and smarter systems built at enforcing site blockades in turkey, I think it is time to get a vpn, to continue my activities safely online. Though companies haven't gone after people most of the time who download audiobooks, I really don't want to take that chance anymore, if these laws get past, which I am 99.99% sure they will, in their current form, which was opened to comment on the turkish culture and turism  ministry's website. So, I know of vpn deals on bleeping computer, and have also checked out the best vpns in torrentfreak's list, which have  a no logging policy etc.So does anyone know which of these are accessible,  which do not apply DMCA requests, and have a no logs policy? Windscribe fits the deal, but have heard mixed things from friends who use it.

Yeah I agree with navigation. It has always been a challenge for me, not being able to understand the layout of an area completely, etc. Not to mention struggling in college courses because of inaccessible programs, and stupid inaccessible report and lesson plan templets provided by professors, which were written like the enemy of nvda, which forces me to get help to complete assignments etc.  Also, non-24 has ruined my life in alot of fronts.  I once remember when I slammed my face into a table when I was 3 or so, in the middle of the night, and half severed the flap of flesh that  held my lip to my mouth. I can still see the connection points to this day in my mouth.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

This is a very interesting topic. Where to begin?First of all, can I just point out that the 70% statistic seems to be thrown around for all things blindness related? I've heard it for years pertaining to employment rates, now I'm hearing it about those who suffer from non-24. is that a coincidence? I'm pretty sure I've heard 70% in relation to something else to do with blindness as well, although it might have been worldwide unemployment rates, and then unemployment rates within the US. Can that really be a coincidence?Secondly, I think it's accurate to say that those with crappy experiences in general are more likely to want their sight back. I mean, who wants to suffer needlessly? I too had an experience with a mobility instructor that I'll never forget. While it may not be as blatantly traumatizing as those mentioned above, it paralyzed me in its own way. I once had an instructor who insisted on using tactile maps to show me everything. She also had a habit of turning the map in order to supposedly show me how cardinal directions worked. This only frustrated me to no end. When I was out in the real world practicing routes, I would often freeze because I could not, and still can't to this day, understand cardinal directions beyond the fact that the sun rises in the east, so if I go out super early in the morning, and the sun is glaring in my face, which, incidentally, would be highly unpleasant due to my sensitivity to light, I'm facing that direction. The instructor in question literally gave up on me. She said I was unteachable, at least by her, to my face. She also said I have a learning disability because of my struggles. While I certainly don't have a problem with those who have learning disabilities, I was told by my mom, who was also present at that meeting, that I had brought shame to her by not trying hard enough and causing someone to think I had one. I was told to get tested, she wouldn't allow that to happen, no doubt because both of my parents have always been exceedingly paranoid that if any one of us looked bad, they would lose their jobs. That's beside the point, though. There have been other instructors since then, and while I can now cross streets successfully without veering too much, I still struggle mightily with directions. This comes with a great deal of shame because of my past experience, not to mention that I've had a crippling fear of getting lost ever since I was little. Even being in a car with someone who doesn't know where they're going can send me into a full fledged panic attack. So, would I take a chance to have sight, even though I've only had light and shadow perception since birth? You bet your ass I would. Anything to understand basic navigation, which seems to be something all humans get except me, would be wonderful. Driving would also be great. I was raised with people who are extremely independent. My parents never had much of a social life, and, in fact, once I became an adult, I was discouraged from having one myself. My dad always used to tell my sister that it was wrong for her to be close to those she worked with, because if something went wrong, her job could be in jeopardy. It was also strongly implied that once you were old enough to work, you didn't need friends. Since we live in a rural area, all the better to not be bothered by anyone, I didn't really get the chance to just do what I wanted regardless of what they said. So I'd take the oppurtunity to drive in a heartbeat, the instant I could safely do it.There are so many other ways I could explain how a lack of sight held me back due to my unique situation, but I don't want to go there. I've already said way too much. However, this is a raw open wound, and had things worked out with my previous partner, I'd probably not be taking such a bitter tone, for various other reasons that have nothing to do with this topic. All I can say is that, while it certainly would be tough to adapt to living with a new sense, could it really be worse than some of the other hardships I've endured? Perhaps I'll never know. And, of course, it's different for everyone. Just because one person might not be able to cope doesn't mean that they're wrong for not wanting to take the plunge. Everyone's threshhold for tolerance to adversity is different.

And maybe work on print-reading speed. I don't see anything else changing.(Ah, "inaccessible" modifies "tools", not "game". So, now there are courses and training for people who get hearing restored, and people who are newly blind. After treatments become available, there will more than likely be training for those newly sighted.

Have the screen reader output to a different device from the audio you want to stream, even if that means virtual shenanigans.Other than that, the best I've got, OTTOMH, is to use a braille display and mute speech, if that's a viable option.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

It does force you to ask for directions more often, yeah. I suppose that seems less important to me just because it seems like a subset of the world being hostile to introversion more than anything. There's this old joke about a husband and wife getting lost on a journey,. It always seems to be summed up as the wife complaining that they wouldn't be in that situation if the husband had just stopped and asked for directions earlier (apparently all the husbands in these things do all the driving...).Point being, sighted people do a lot of asking for directions, and less than they probably should. I don't know if this trope existed prior to the spread of automobiles. It seems like everyone in stories prior to the 20th century are always asking for directions.IMO, I'd rather take the invisibility. Being able to go where I want without random encounter would be preferable to having to stare at the ground to avoid it.The 21st century seems to just hate introverts, somewhy. Sight might give you a means to better fight this. It might not. It depends on your circumstances. I'm more of the opinion that the answer is a magically perfect community of people who are actually not unbearably stressful, but since that isn't going to happen, I'll settle for the invisibility cloak.

I have a youTube Channel where I post music, and I've wanted to do live streams of my covers on YouTube for a while.  The road block I always come up against is, I don't want my screen reader to be heard while the stream is going, so I'd be able to interact in the live stream chat, or be able to do other things like selecting music without the screen reader being heard.  Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so how would I go about doing it?  I'd love to do live concert sort of things too, but once again really don't want my screen reader to be heard lol.

hi,Kae, you also seem to  be socializing blindness,  telling me that it is because of crappy people or teachers. Well for one thing, which I really hate about blindness, it forces you to interact more with people,  and draws attention. Sometimes, I just want to turn invisible and not interact with people on this level. So to be clear, the problems I face, are! related to blindness, and not to something in society. Also, paul, you stated that it would be too much efort to throw away everyhting and relearn. However, keep in mind that for everything worthwhile in life, you need to work hard, and put alot of efrot.  Why should this be any different? And braille, not being to sleep in the day is a true blessing. It clearly shows you don't have non-24. When you have non-24, your body clock runs freely, and you have an ever moving sleep schedule.

That monster study was pretty disgraceful. The fact they chose orphans means they knew they were going to damage those kids, so best there'd be no parents to make a fuss. It reminded me of the Oliver Sacks book The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat. I remember being a bit outraged at the way he treated some of his patients like they were objects that were there for him to do what he wanted with. They hadn't gone to him for treatment, he'd acquired them like specimens. For instance, there was a pair of idiot savant twins who were brilliant at mathematics, but couldn't look after themselves. Because they played math games with each other all day, he decided to split them up to see if they improved in terms of normal functionality. What gave him the right to prevent two twins from seeing each other against their will. Because they couldn't defend themselves, and there was no one to complain on their behalf, he acted like they were his property. There was another guy who he took from a care home or something to basically experiment on, again because he had no family to fight his corner. And yet the man who inspired the book's title, because he was of a certain class, and had a wife and family, was allowed to carry on being the way he was, unfucked with by Oliver Sacks. And ironically he was the one who did seek out treatment.

actually they have battle cats, word war, and word builder for Android, just not yet combined under the Huboodle platform. Also for those who want to know I have had the same problem Dark has been having. I bypassed the issue by connecting it to a facebook account I had though that was after I lost a lot of progress when a bug caused me to have to completely erase the game and its save file and because it didn't take my e-mail and password changes, it  kept me from going back and continuing where I left off so I lost everything. I have since gotten more done there than I did on my previous file so I don't want it fixed now but I can understand the frustration.

The number of choices has gone down to one and no matter what I do; I am unable to change it to three, am I doing something wrong?I also put 7 in the number of days and 100 in the number of votes. It gave me an error saying something that I can't remember at the moment but what I do remember is that the error cut off.I was just about to post this topic when I tabbed around and noticed that the poll question box did not tell me about the less than 5 characters thing, instead it just said edit.

Magnetic toys and anxiety.

2018-02-18 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : brad via Audiogames-reflector

Magnetic toys and anxiety.

Hi everyone.I have anxiety and have found that magnetic toys are amazing for it.When I was a lot younger, my nan or Grandmother brought me some magnetic toys called GeoMag and I'd play with them for hours.I'd make triangles, 3d piramids, huge square cube shapes, circles and things like that. For those that have anxiety or get nervus quite quick, have you tried magnetic toys like GeoMag Bucky Balls, NanoDots et cetra?I ordered some magnetic toys online and can't wait to play with them. The fact I can fiddle with them and calm down and make shapes I'm interested in is amazing.I can get lost for hours making shapes.I get quite nervus when going to the dentist. I'm quite nervus when having injections and must admit the dentist I'm seeing at the moment is very nice and understanding. The reason I bring this up is because I had a time in my life, and think I may have it again, when I thought about a dentist appointment that I didn't even have. (My Nan or Grandmother, hadn't even booked it yet.)Here are what my thoughts were like. It's going to be horrible, they're going to give me injections, I'm going to hate it. Honestly, I  can't say those were my exact thoughts, it was a mish mash of all those things and panic, mostly panic.I know that with my magnet toys I will be able to calm down when having a panic atack like that again.I'm not sure exactly how long this panic atack lasted but I know it was at least around 3 to 4 weeks.Days would bleed into one another. My nan and aunties tried to help but it didn't work. Well actuallly one thing did work that my nan suggested, counting coins.I'm not exactly sure how I snapped out of it, I ended up going to the dentist for a check up and the guy was very nice and understanding.I was meant to go back a couple of months ago but honestly, stayed up way to late and fell asleep and missed it.I'm going to go back in a month or so and this time I'll get a clean done with the pick thing, I don't think I'm ready for machines just yet but hopefully I will be soon and if i'm not, that's okay because I have all the time in the world.Funny thing is, I got my tooth broken in college and had to have an injection for that and was okay with it but now, the thought of an injection makes me quite nervus.I hope I didn't make anyone nervus. I wanted to tell people about this experience and show them how magnetic toys help me.I'd heighly recommend magnetic toys for stress and anxiety or depression. For me; having something I made sit on my table knowing I can break it and make something completely different is awesome!Have you tried it or if you have anxiety or depression, do you think this kind of stuff would work for you?

I'm currently writing a large application and have written everything in notepad. I haven't used an IDE at all, unless you count the VC++ command-line developer tools as an 'IDE'. Also, the smart string concatenation that people are referring to is either of the following, if I'm following your wavelengths:1. Printf-style formatting, i.e.:printf ("%s %.3f\n", "Pi is equal to", 3.14159); // prints pi is equal to 3.141.2. Boost.format-style syntax:#include #include std::string s2 = boost::str(boost::format::format("%2% %1%") % 36 % 77 );(Taken from http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_66_0/li … rmat.html; lots more examples there.)(I admit, this method is a bit more clunky.)There is, of course, the optional third way of doing things:3. IOStreams-style formatting (setf/setw). Example at http://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/io/ios_base/setfThere are probably a lot more ways of string concatenation. One other way is through stringstreams:#include using namespace std;stringstream ss;ss << data;ss << data << data << ...;// Repeat until you've got all your data in the stringstream Or you can make a set of

On the subject of people who work with the blind being pretty dreadful, I II have had so much experience of that kind that I developed a half-baked theory about what might be behind it. Have you heard of the Stanford Prison Experiment? Essentially they took a group of ordinary people, split them in two, made one set prisoners and the other guards. The odd thing was that even though they were all perfectly decent people at the start, the ones who had the role of guards started to behave sadistically toward the ones they had at their mercy. The idea being that when people have someone at a disadvantage, it brings out the worst in them. I think this might be happening with people who spend a lot of time working with the disabled. I have defintley witnessed what I would call sadistic behaviour from sighted people who work with the blind. Little humiliations and power trips going on. The trouble is if you voice these concerns, you can end up sounding bitter and paranoid, but I'm convinced it really goes on in prisons, care homes, and anywhere one group has another at a disadvantage.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

@JaceK, yours sounds like a genuinely dangerous incident, mine was just a dickhead kid acting tough and failing. It was like being mawled by a kitten. The only really threatening thing that has happened to me so far didn't actually involve any threat at all, it was just disturbing. I was walking down a footpath late at night and I heard someone ahead of me, so I slowed down to let them pass so I wouldn't hit them with my cane, but they stopped. When I started walking again, they started walking along side me. I stopped and they stopped. I said what do you want, and he said nothing, just stood there right in front of me. I could feel his presence he was that close. I reached out with my cane and touched him to make sure there was definitely someone there and I wasn't going mad. I asked him what he was doing, and he still said nothing. I thought I'm not moving til you make your intentions known, so we both just stood there for a moment. Then he walked around back of me and I spun around thinking you're not going behind me. He walked to the other side of the path and stopped again. I waited a moment longer, then set off. I think he started walking along behind me, but I'm not sure. I didn't feel threatened while all this was happening, but once I started walking again, I couldn't wait to get off the footpath and back to the proper streets. This strange experience did affect my state of mind for a while when walking home at night. I had to force myself to use that footpath after dark even though my family told me not to. I just didn't want him to have that power over me, but that little wordless incident was more threatening than the boy with the crowbar.

Yeah. I find that, while IDEs reduce some of the work, they make up for it with clutter and navigation and gah just let me write the code in a text editor, read the compilation results, and test the thing. Notepad + the command prompt is generally sufficient, but Python.exe launches a useful terminal, also.

I'm still on the fence about would I want sight backOn the one hand, I would. On he other hand...I still wouldn't. I would so I could do more stuff, get back to horse riding, read books etcetra, on the other hand I wouldn't, at least until the procedure and the aftermath of said procedures are foolproof and I know I can deal with it.@Poly: You're seriously lucky, at least in the UK and US the blind services are extremely, extremely pushy and closed minded frankly, it's bullshit.Instead of you playing football...and seen this happen they'd pull you off your team and put you on the goalball team, and when you asked why they'd say oh, you're blind, you don't play footballwhich is frankly bullshit but that's certain blind social services for you.Amusingly enough

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

first things first, thanks all for a very interesting, perhaps the one of the most interesting topics we've had in a long while. posts 8 and 10, well written. crashmaster, think post 22, I'll be straight up honest, your post made me somewhat emotional. you have thought so much about it, and you've explained it well, most of which that I could relate to... once again, thanks for a great read. now on to a couple of things. first, if anyone thinks that having light perception allows you to do more, that's partially true. sure, you see the sun. sure, you see things. but it won't make you any more or less independent. as for sleeping difficulties, as I say, I have full light perception, and I can't, no matter how hard I try, sleep during the day. I've no ideas what it is related to, but it is what it is. post 28, there's a difference between being able to do things, and no sight stopping you. sure, maintaining a house is possible. sure, cooking is possible. sure, raising kids is possible. going into a shop without an assistant, somewhere where you haven't been before, and you're all alone... going to a country where the traffic works differently... so say you came from, I don't know, will say France to the UK. over here, we have left hand side drive. over there, we have right hand side. or is it the other way round? either ways, the fact is, crossing a British road, at first, may seem taunting. maybe it is. honestly, my mobility skills are horrible, and I'll get to that in a bit. so while things can be done, there are some things that you will just never be able to do. someone also raised the inability to use braille or speech. just because we gain sight, there's nothing to say that we can no longer use braille and speech.  as for things like RNIB, humanWare, etc, etc, total rip off. glad I'm not the only one, who feels like these companies are pushing you their one and only method. the sad thing is, I even know some blind people, who think that their method is the one and only. and you know what? it's sad, it's sad that they claim that you're this, you're that, yet they're the ones who are close minded. there's something else that hasn't really been mentioned, and so I want to raise it here. mobility. while I don't really want to go into my private life, long story short, I have not, till the age of 10, even seen, let alone using a cane. at the age of 10, when moving over to the UK, I was more or less forced to use it. that discouraged me so badly, I have not, for 2 years, again, used a cane. the fact that my mobility instructor was crappy didn't help the fact at all. she took me in the shop at the age of 16, gave me a carrot, and asked me what it was. no one, unless they went through it as well, will ever understand, how embarrassing that was. giving me a carrot, at the age of 16. long story short, I have lost my self confidence  that I once had. I lost hope of proper mobility, partially due to that instructor. here I am, at the age of 18, with more or less non-existent mobility skills. and no one, ever understood how I felt about it. the older I am, the worse this will be. with that said, I am fully independent as far as looking after  myself goes, as long as it doesn't involve busy streets. and honestly, I don't expect anyone to understand me. and no, it's not as easy as you just gotta move on and deal with it. unless someone has experiences with horrible mobility instructors, they will see it differently. once again, thanks for some interesting stories.

@30, yeah, you have valid points. But still personally, by my own I don't think I would jump back in to sight. When I was 3 years old, I was been told that I couldn't never play football, because I am blind. Yet, I play in a blind football team, I've made the european championships and I'm considered one of the best players in my country. It depends in what people past in their lifes that makes you say if you would take the sight or not.I obviously think that if I could see I could do pretty good things. But who says that If I can see my life would be better than it is now?I've never had contact with those blind companies, or I've never made a blind school.I always grew up with sighted people around me.I found verry nice persons, like I found really ass holes. But still, I wouldn't drop away what I have now for the sight. Not after the effort and the sofference I put in to it.

...did we have the same mobility instructor I wonder? Seriously, I managed too nearly castrate myself several times with the long cane, damn thing got caught under my legs the whole time. Also carrots? No, no, Try being given a can of baked beans. Then try having a supermarket assistant acuse you of stealing it. No joke. Gotta love mobility bullshit.but to be honest I do agree, advocacy groups are a rip off and a waste of time IMHO...Fun fact, a now retired social worker told me, flat out, not to buy anything from the RNIB catalog, since it was overpriced and all that fun stuff.Since you moved to the UK, were you forced to learn goalball or was that just me? I was, and oh look, a demeaning sport, or at least taught in a demeaning way, and I don't know any kids who are legally blind with sight who willingly want to play goalball...Fun fact bout me: I'm a horse guy, I did barrel racing, I learned show jumping and freaked my instructor out. I also broke the RDA (riding for the Disabled) system by being too good for it. So, I got trained by a regular instructor and helped around the stable, which worked out well for me. Gimme a horse and somewhere to ride, I'm good thank ya.Oh and also, speaking of demeaning stuff, being forced to learn braille, I dug my heels in and refused. I'm more at home on a computer thanks...

Re: Land of Livia: An IOS game which has been made accessible

Yes, some areas have only one route that directly connects them to another area and must be taken if traveling to and area for the first time. The developer is trying to come up with a way of showing voice over users that there are dotted lines which  directly connect areas )Paths) to each other, such as the raid camp and Tropical Jungle. In the mean time there are a ton of sighted players in your campfire which can help you out if you specifically ask them which area connects directly to the area you need to get to for the first time.On a side note, the campfire ID I am currently in is h3hyIH. It is caps sensitive, so make sure to type in caps when the letter is in caps. Another campfire with several other blind players is GB8eXw. I am Nolly in the first and Kyleni in the second.

We'll have to see how the situation goes in the next months, but one thing is sure: I will not be able to follow master studies abroad unless a university grants me a scholarship. I can't really afford fees which go up to 10,000 euros per year for a non EU-student; it's impossible!

@23 I do see your point.I lost the sight when I was 3 years old.I know that  making the things withouth sighted help, driving a car, etc would be cool. But I can't stand the fact that all the things that I built in my life with so much effort, will vanish once I take the sight back.I think it doesn't matter if you're blind or not, if you want an house, work hard and go get one. If you want to learn how to cook go learn it, you'll need to fix some issues because you're blind, but at the end when you'll manage to cook what you want  you'll be satisfied.Only because I'm blind it doesn't mean that I can't do what sighted people do.Again I can appear stupid, but I really thought on this for a long time, and I was curious to know what people were thinking.I have blind friends who actually work and have their home and who actually is able to cook. This proves that even if you're blind you can still do things if you work hard on it.I'm not saying that getting the sight back is not good, but I don't think that I would drop away all  the things I built in my life like that.

Re: Linux information for a completely blind user with a verry old laptop

This site is pretty useful for reducing your background RAM and CPU usage, it looks scarier than it is, and as long as you make sure the column your reading is the right one you will be fine 90% of the time, and the speed increase is very worth the risk in my opinion, especially if you've backed up your files.http://www.blackviper.com/service-confi … gurations/Also, their is CCleaner, which if run correctly at least once a week should help quite a bit, mostly for temp file, browser cash, old hotfix installers, and such, and the startup wizard can be used in place of MSConfig if you like.Disabling things like Dropbox, Skype, anti virus UI, email clients, and the like from running at startup can help too.Mostly though, it's just not that easy to do heavier tasks on a computer with 4GB of RAM when using a 64 bit OS, especially with older processors with no SSD.So if Linux doesn't work out, you could go back to XP Pro with SP3, at least that way you would have a really good audio gaming machine.I'm not sure how much using a 32 bit version of Win 10 or Win 7 would help, I'm guessing not much, but if XP is too old for you than you should at least try it.Playing audio games is going to be hard on Linux, it seems like only a few of them work with Wine well, but you may be able to rig up an XP virtual machine and give it like 1.5 or 2GB of RAM, which should be plenty for simpler games, especially if you use the black viper service list for XP.

Hi Amerikranian.Goodness, I am tired of hearing stupid stuff like this! Yes you can use notepad to write python programs no problem. I've seen this in many python tutorials, "Don't use notepad, it's very bad!" If it's easier for you to use notepad then go ahead. You can still run scripts with the command prompt if you really want to later. Just keep in mind that the books are wrong about things sometimes.Hth.

@Flakkers: 99% of people are decent. Had my own crowbar moment, though in my case it was a knife wielding tough guy in, yes, Boston of all places. I went to the south side, which in retrospect wasn't smartbut hey, hearing an old Catholic lady escorting me to a bus stop and helping me stay unstabbed was amusing. Then hearing her turn right around and scold the guy with the knife was hilariusly awesome, the fact the bus driver just stayed there and started yelling at the kid made it more awesome too

To add to my previous postI'd argue that yes, you do need a backup of some sort, be it an external HD, cloud (yah right?) or a backup OS like I suggested, I'm personally in favor of a backup OS because 1. Having another OS on your system is useful for many reasons, 2. It'll help you become a better user if you can get good with that othe OS and 3. Let's say Windows gets infected with a virus that locks your data, you still got Linux/Mac/Etc on that machine and it's still useable, for instance. Plus it's good to try other OSes

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

I would take it in a heartbeat. I had partial sight in one eye until I was 11 years old, good enough to read large print and play video games. I couldn't color well, and complex images took me a while to process. But now that I'm older, and with the blindness skills I have, I think I could compensate for the processing challenges and make it work. I have serious anxiety, and I think partial sight would help with traveling. I think I would still primarily use braille and audio for reading. I read print very slowly as a kid.I would use sight to take walks. Sure I can go walking now, but it's not nearly as interesting when I can't look at the color of the sky or see how the sunlight is playing off objects. I would like to create computer generated art for my house since I was always terrible at drawing and coloring. I would like to play racing video games and animated cartoon games. It was always easier for me to see the bright colors of animation rather than the darker real world colors. I would be very okay with not driving. It would make me too nervous. I don't think I would mind public transportation and ride sharing so much if I had sight.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

One of the best things about being blind for me is that since I've been going out as a blind person over the past few years, I've enjoyed the warmth and kindness of the majority of society. There are some real arseholes, children of around 8 to 12 being the worst, but they're vastly out-numbered by the good. Even among the age group I thought might give me the most grief, young teens, they are mostly made up of decent considerate people, despite what the media would have us believe. Loads more people I don't know say hello to me on the street now than ever did when I had sight. People stop to offer me lifts occasionally, and although I always refuse because I enjoy walking, and wouldn't get into a car with a total stranger anyway, the act of kindness helps overwrite the idiots who very occasionally make fun. Or the one young boy who followed me around putting obstacles in my way, and even using a crowbar to lever up grid covers on my regular route, and ended up pathetically trying to threaten me with the crowbar. All people like this are really doing is telling me how weak and inadequate they are, and I dont' feel threatened in the slightest. But for every idiot there are a hundred decent people with too much self-respect to pick on the vulnerable, and getting to see that is the best thing about being blind.

Re: Moving away from BGT and learning python

Yeah, I was mainly talking about the conditional stuff like switch case statements and the ternary operator. Python's constant if/elif/else blocks feel repetative to type. In C/C++ (Which admittedly is beginning to put this language back in my good graces over Java) is the preprocessor which allows for macros and that sort of thing. Plus, more as a personal preference, I prefer the braces to the forced tabbing system. In C/C++/Java, if I forget a tab somewhere, the compiler and or program is not going to yell at me about it. Not to say anyone that I might be working with on a project won't mind you, but I'd rather have them angry at me when it would be a simple correction requiring little trouble of retesting stuff. I can write the program as I wish and if it works, I know it isn't a blocking issue because I forgot a tab somewhere. If it's a nice enough IDE, a lot of the brace stuff is handled for me as well. Celebrating your existence, Eclipse.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

No, I would not take sight if it were offered. For one thing, I do have partial sight, its only in one eye, my left eye has none, not even light perception. That doesn't mean I can use it for much of anything. I can read print if its sufficiently large enough, but its tiring and will cause a sort of ache in my eyebrows. I also have nistagnus, the eye jumping condition, so to focus on anything requires a bit of effort. To restore the vision would be to readjust to too many things. My way of judging distances would be thrown off and I would have to re-learn it. I would probably be stopping short of things I wanted to reach for, etc. I already know what color is, but I don't have 3D vision, so no stereoscopic type binocular vision, so getting used to having depth perception would be odd. I was given glasses and hate them. They made me feel like I was constantly walking down a ramp, oh just try it for two weeks, hell no. I couldn't even make it a day with those things on. They didn't even help with anything practical, made things look more sharp, but I'd trade that for the feeling of instability of footing. I do have to put more effort in, I do hae to scan shit, I do have to learn a remote or something to use it, learn the places of buttons on a washing machine etc. But the vision thing, its too uncertain for me to risk it, I get by the way things are now, why change that. OK, there's no arguing driving would be awesome, do the things you can do in a day with public transit in like 2 hours because you don't have to wait on buses would be awesome, and give vast freedom, but I'd probably mow people down because I have no patience and moronic drivers would push me over the edge.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

[[wow]].That is another interesting what if topic.A lot of my projects I do especially government projects have to do with what if.What if you went blind tomorrow what would you do.Things like that.So what would happen if I could get my sight back.Having been born blind thats actually a hard one.Ok, on the good side I'd have a chance of getting a job.I could drive a vehicle, buy a house, even well maintain my own house and really have a life.On the down side, though, ie what if I could see tomorrow, I don't know if I would.Firstly I am used to braille and speech, I'd have to do without both, and I'd probably miss it though I could run what I wanted.I wouldn't need a cane, that would be nice I keep forgetting it if I don't concentrate enough. Now the rest though.Having been taught special things and a few special skills as well as some mainstreaming, I'd be poor, helpless and retarded all over again.I can type, but not write, read, do math on paper.I can't draw, I'd have to go back to primary school again, and work up from the start probably, I'd have to get used to not touching things.Ofcause my condition rop, which basically means premiture birth and retenal detatchment etc type thing, well that don't happen anymore to those even if they are born as I was.I am one of the last of a breed of blind people of my condition so I don't know. While I bitch and moan about my life sometimes, in some ways my life is freer and richer than any sightling life.I get up at 6, I do the house chores for family, I train in my home gym, and I read books, swim in my local pool at home, play piano well I do sometimes and play computer games as well as do work from home when it comes.I don't have to deal with such things as traffic jams, accidents, and normal things. When family finally die, I will be moved hopefully to a home where I can continue my life as it is till its over. That may be sad for some and yes it probably is for me, but at least I have a life, and I will know where its structure starts and ends.Especially with the world as it is, I wander if any normals actually know where they start and or end.Its nice to know where I am going even if where I will end up is probably another hospital.Rarely do we as humans especially in these troubled times know where we are going. And even if all hell breaks loose because I am blind I will be almost completely helpless for the real things, and so I will help where I can and continue as I am.And because I am a helpless blind, I am not expected to do what I can't do even more so.This means I can make my own decisions on what I do and do not do.I used to hate this and to some extent I still do, however I count myself freeer than some of my sighted peers.I also have friends autistic ones that while mostly normal but with a few added issues, can't find work either or in fact much.Like me one of my best friends is almost like me.But his family work all day, and he has never seen anything bar the net.He lives online, and while he does go out who knows what his life will be like.Due to his life being as  it is he sleeps all day and is depressed and on loads and loads of drugs to handle that.I have another worse than that, who was born with a hole in their head. Our laws don't allow her to be put down or aborted or anything, and while thats really not good for a disabled, she is not aware and has been like that for her life. She fits, is totally retarded and dumb not of her own choosing. She gets frustraited, angry and violent and is abused in the care homes she goes to and her mum and family have health and other issues because of this.I know others with different disabilities, some worse some better and so I am lucky to be blind and not worse.Sure if I could become sighted, I'd jump at the chance even if that means my comfortable life will be over.It would be a way out of the bad side of my life and I could try to start with the future where ever that will be.Then again it would depend what that was.I'd need to redo parts of my university and in fact need to go back, I'd have to start from kindergarten all over again. If I survived all that I'd be an old man, and no use to anyone.I am unsure exactly what I would do if well who knows.Saying that, if it cost as much as the new orbit reader, I'd do it.What I'd like to be honest would be a way to be able to see but a way that would allow me to become blind again.Maybe some tech I could turn on and off.Part of me wants to leave my disabled life but there is a part that is used to it.I don't know if I could cope outside my life bad that it can sometimes bee.So you asked the question, I guess if I could see tomorrow, my answer would be I' don't know what I'd do.It would be another set of studdies. If the sighted go blind well. Then again, all my studdies have shown at least in the research projects I do, is that the part of your brain that process images is not dead.So

And also note that the instances of people being restored their sight are extremely rare now, and so the results are mostly speculation at this point. A few anecdotal reports should and cannot be enough to make educated dicions on whether or not our brains can take it.The way in which the brain works suggests that the anecdotes would be the norm. The visual cortex is the biggest part of the sighted brain. Blind brains reallocate parts of it for things like language processing. We have a finite amount of processing power, and it gets increasingly difficult to reallocate with age. We're also not just relying on human anecdotes; the same applies to birds and mammals.Of course, it's entirely possible that the neural plasticity enhancer I mentioned above works reliably for everything, and won't just languish in the enormous piles of "things that would be really cool if anyone developed and released them affordably". In which case, this would become moot.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

I'd like what I had, because what I had was good enough to play 2d games. Around the time I was 10-11, I concluded that's pretty much all I used it for, that and drawing / trying to coax animation out of computers.OK, few things I overlooked, but most of them don't change the answer.I'd be worried that my vision was in the "just good enough to get into trouble" range, and I'm not really sure how I'd adjust to trying to get around with vs without.Would I want perfect vision? No. I think that'd be annoying and distracting and if it tried to take over my perception the way it does the mode sighted person, that'd be horrifying.I really don't like the attention from wannabe Good Samaritans. Somehow, I think perfect vision would just exacerbate the problem, in the sense that I'd suddenly be in the nonverbal communication realm, making being in the presence of other people more stressful, I should think. Meanwhile, I know that places where this is only an occasional issue in unusual circumstances exist. And, well, if people are exposed to blind people going about their business normally, then a significant chunk of the motivation to interfere diminishes.Re: neural plasticity, a few years back, a paper was published about a substance which apparently made it much, much easier for people over 50 to learn perfect pitch. Will anything come of this? Well, I want it to, so probably not. But if the effect generalizes, as the publications suggested it should, it'd be the sort of thing someone adjusting to a new or restored sense would definitely want.I struggle to imagine me being able to drive safely. In the US, cars are the most common cause of death for people under 40. You have to pay attention to everything everywhere all the time, with like three mirrors, traffic, signs, pedestrians, animals, construction, weather, etc, etc, at 10-20 times walking speed. It's a miracle if I can finish a—oh, I nearly forgot that I just woke up from a dream about trying to walk somewhere while some alleged OnM person followed me around being annoying. So that was weird.Still, I like color and want it back. I like what I had because it was good enough without overpowering everything else. I don't like there being well near nothing I can read around while everyone else can just grab a book or read an obnoxious screenshot (seriously WTF do people do that). There's a lot I'd rather not be left out of.But it's tradeoffs all the way down. So ultimately, I'd have to go with what I had when I was 10-11. Plus some kinda animation software at least as intuitive as Spider-man Cartoon Maker, for my own amusement. Most of my problems are either not to do with blindness, or to do with being a poor minority whose means of interacting with the world are largely ignored by the majority. Vision is highly unlikely to change the former, and doing something so dramatic to fit into this world instead of building my own... well, it's practical, I suppose, but I'd rather not.

so the book says not to use notepad. Is there any other edetors that you'd suggest? I don't want to go try a random one in case of it not being accessible.

@2:Orca breaks? Maybe it's my distro choice (Solus Mate) but that doesn't break at all, Ubuntu 16.04/17.10 are useable, Mate desktop is where it's at really, I'd say try either Solus Mate or Ubuntu Mate. Ubuntu Mate won't be supported past July for 17.10 and 2021 for 16.04 Long term suppport. The drawback to the LTS vrsion is you have older software. Also, do not, ever, use Vinux. You can do the exact same things in any Mate distro with Orca and other accessibility features...plus 14.04 won't be supproted past 2019

Hi all, i’m needing help in purchasing a Braille Display. Listening to synthesized speech is getting more difficult as time goes by. For more, please have a look at the link belo. Thanks all for your understanding and possible willingness to help out. I am in no way suggesting that you have to help, but I would be very grateful if you could as I could then get back to producing my music and operating my devices more effectively daily. Thanks again all.https://www.gofundme.com/55wlve8

Re: Land of Livia: An IOS game which has been made accessible

Hi.An awesome update got released yesterday. I hope this solves the issues people are having.I'm playing like crazy. I have played my phones battery to death multiple times. I will check out the gem cutting later tonight, and post how to do this as soon as I have done that successfully. Out from what I hear though, you need to press the cut button when you hear the sound. It is a huge loss when you fail this, trust me, I have tried. I love the lore minigames. This is a great challenge, which I'm glad has been made accessible.

Thanks, I do not want to switch sinthesizers cause I tried that and it caused almost the same lag, vocalizer has the big problems at start, in rest it almost works, but the computer itself has lag.

Re: If there would be a way for getting your sight back, would you do it?

Hello, Definitely yes, and a loud yes, because the sight was taken from me unfairly, when I was just a little baby of one and a half years old, without knowing what are weapons, what is bloodfude or anything of that nature. But even if I was born completely blind, I would say yes, for blindness causes numerous problems in my daily life. It completely takes away my independence because I cannot travel alone, I cannot live on my own, I am unable to pursue studies abroad for I lack even the most basic training in transportation. Since the very last day when I graduated from the primary school for the blind, and up to this day which is the last year of my university, I have had to ask the assistance of my brother or my parents to send me to school and bring me back home. Even education was highly problematic for me as I sometimes needed to read books which were only in print and all of them would have to be scanned page by page by my brother, worst being the case when the results would turn out to be rubbish. This happened not only with school books, but also with books I needed to use for research.I won't go any further, because all the other things have been written above, more profoundly than I would be able to.

Re: Linux information for a completely blind user with a verry old laptop

HelloI think you might be getting so much lag is because you are using vocaliser. When you are using linux, vocaliser is not available to you, I think most people use espeak. You might want to try and switch synths before you change your operating system.Linux can work on the desktop, but keep in mind that the blind community for linux desktop use is much smaller than the Windows community, so things do tend to break more often on Linux. If you want to create a bootable usb drive, you can use rufus. I have heard good things about Ubuntu mate when it comes to beginner friendliness and accessibility. THere are almost no native Linux games available, but most Windows games can be run using wine, which is a program that translates Windows system calls into the linux equivalents. The setup prosedure to get sapi working is pritty difficult though, I have tried and failed on both gentoo and archlinux, but it might work better on Ubuntu.
