accessible chess client for mac, not, apple chess?

Do any of you know of any accessible voiceover friendly client for the mac that is not, apple chess? I'm trying to find one but... No luck. I've tried shreder, stalkfish and... no luck, and apple chess is not... really cutting it at this point. Does anyone have any suggestions? To give you a idea, i'm looking for something like winboard, where you can have various engines to play against, play engine against engine for testing purposes etc... is there such an app for mac that is like this? Edit, or a gui that is accessible. What I described above is more a gui not a single chess engine.

Re: Accessible Chess?

Well I can chime in with a good iOS option. Chess-wise is a great choice for playing both against the computer and against other people. Shredder chess is a good one for playing against the computer. It will adjust the difficulty based on how you play in each game. Beyond that, it also has a mode where it sets up a scinario for you and you have to make the right move. It's really hard. I used to play chess all the time but still couldn't ever get it right. If anyone wants to play me on chess-wise though my username is blindingaura. I am a little rusty because I haven't really been playing much lately, but I can still put up a pretty decent fight I think.

Re: Accessible Chess?

There are a couple resources that i can personally recommend depending on what platform you have in mind. As far as playing against engines on Windows goes, I've been using Winboard a lot. Even though I haven't found a way to customize engines to my liking, it's accessible and has lots of nice features. (like importing games from various formats for analysis) I use QC mostly when it comes to playing aginst others. Lichess has an accessibility mode that allows you to enter moves using notation, but I personally prefer being able to arrow around the board to examine pieces. There are also a few IOS chess apps that are accessible, but I'm still looking for ones that allow you to play against others online. If anyone else has anything that they use, I'd be glad to know. I'd also be glad to play against anyone interested.

Re: Accessible Chess?

QC is only for playing other people. I don't know what you didn't like in particular to give a better explanation, but playing Chess is farily simple. All you do is press enter on the  piece you want to move, then enter again on it's destination square. You have shortcuts like Ctrl left and right to reach left and right edge, as well as Ctrl up and down. You have different things like P to jump to the next available pawn, K for king, N for knight, R Rook, B Bishop and D queen. Those should be basics to get you started, but you can of course ask anything specific. As for playing offline, there are many programs. Some people use Winboard, though for a beginner, BG Chess challenge from Spoonbill games is actually very decent. This one is self voicing using Sapi, and has difficulty options for the computer player. Later if you need more advanced AI you can always find a mainstream program. You can get BG Chess challenge at http://www.spoonbillsoftware.com.au/bgchess.htm

Accessible Chess?

So I want to test and grow my brain's logic capabilities with something other than computer problems, and I figured a good logic puzzle for that would be Chess. Sudoku is a bit much for me and I don't think I could ever play that in software. I'd prefer to have the ability to play against either another person or the computer, with a difficulty level, though these don't necessarily need to be in the same service. I've heard of Quenton C's playroom having chess support, but is it decent? For a newbie chess player, would it be friendly? I've never much liked Quenton C's UI. And how are the bots on it?So basically what are your recommendations for accessible ways I can play chess on my computer or iPhone with purely audible interaction?

I know this is an odd question, as the game doesn't necessarily need it, but is there any kind of chess app or system that also makes some sounds as you play, just to help with, sort of, immersion? I haven't tried Shreadder yet, in fact I haven't realyl experimented with any iOS chess apps, although it could be interesting. If there's no sounds, that's OK, it's just a question I thought I'd ask just in case.

Re: Accessible Chess apps?

Depends on how deep do you want to study chess. No, you don't need to be professional to do that, chess is an art, a science and a game for everyone. There are many game openings, which each lead to specific kind of game i.e. playing sicilian Dragon with its polarised battle wings with bloody offensive on one and tough defensive on another is a completely different story than playing King's indian defence, which hides king in a massive bunker, fixates center with pawns and launches a strong attack on wings supported from prebuild defensive lines. From aesthetic point of view, Sicilian Dragon is a very agressive opening, while King's indian defence is rather one continuous colossal attack with strong defence. And there are many other openings, with their own unique natures. If you pick up the rightone for you and start exploring its variants and possibilities, the game can become far more interesting, than just wild selection. It's possible that you already know this, and have appropriate skills, I don't know. But anyway, if you want to work with chess in your own style, and train your style, then you need an appropriate app. Fritz 16 is a good choice, or even its previous versions, which are somewhat... cheaper than the currentone. It allows you to create and mantain your own openings book, where computer chooses one of them and plays it with you on an appropriate level, tracks your strength and even make some non-obvious mistakes from time to time, so you can train your tactics analysis. There are also free programs on the market, but I don't know any with such level of personality. It's not like I have actually tried all of them, I was just searching and didn't find anything with such features. But if you don't want to get deeper at all, and you are for some reason satisfied with just basic gameplay against a defeatable bot, then you can have also fun with apps like Chess Titans or fully accessible BG chess challenge.Although BGC is not that hard to defeat, when you know its weaknesses, but still, the game interface is very nice. If it had support for uci engines, it would be avesome, but that's sadly not the case right now.Actually I tried a king vs. king and rook challenge, and BGC was not able to checkmate me even on the expert level, so if you're out of material on the board, don't panic, you can still try to draw at least. Re: Accessible Chess apps?

As I've probably stated in another thread, Shredder for IOS is pretty good. You can customize it to be aggressive, defensive or neutral, and you can customize its difficulty anywhere from 850ELO (a beginner level) to something like 2750 (solid grandmaster). You can also set up different time controls, if that's your thing, as well as get help and suggestions, solve puzzles, save your games, and have Shredder auto-adjust its strength as you play, getting stronger as you do but getting a little weaker when you lose.

Re: any accessible chess games?

@9: I would say BG chess challenge searches to some depth, with a quite simple evaluation function. Expert level has thicker defence than beginner in sense that it won't give you figures for free, without using some tactics, although playing b6 against advancing pawn to b4, when second pawn is on a4 and his bishop on a6 to prevent b5! is too complex for him. Anyway, I played few nice matches against it. Only mistake, that would be good to fix is, that taking material seems for its engine like better choice than preventing checkmate. so even if you lost your queen, you have still great chance to win. BG Chess Challenge is actually a little bit weird. Whatever engine it uses, it's...not very good. As in, there's not a ton of variation between beginner and expert.Shredder can accommodate you regardless of your skill level, and you can tailor it to play aggressively or defensively, or in a more balanced style.

Hi,it depends, at which level do you want to play.Yes, BG chess challenge is a great game, like others from spoonbil games, but it isn't very hard to defeat it even on expert level. If you are a club player, then Fritz 16 would be better for you, as it has many features like rated games, hints, games analysis, ability to force openings for training, your own match databases etc.And if you want to just play, there is also possibility to play against engines directly through command line. it isn't very confortable, but it works for all popular games including chess, but also Arimaa, Go and others.Best regardsRastislav
