So I look at my glucose data and I try to mimic what my pancreas did when it was working by dosing rapid acting and slow acting insulins. When you take insulin, your blood glucose drops. When you eat carbs, your blood glucose goes up. If your blood glucose is too high, it will cause long term damage to your nerves, heart, brain. If it's too high for like a week, it will cause a dangerous hospitalization. If it's too low, you die.So you have to hit that sweetspot where it's not too high and not too low. But it's okay, I'm getting good at this. The only annoying thing with insulin is that it's a protein that would break down if you were to eat it, so you have to inject it, in my case 4 times a day. Re: Monthly chat, November 2020 It's not December yet! Still time to squeeze in a November update.It's been a while. Still working full time in Excel, still in Washington State. I watched the very unnecessarily stressful elections first week of November. Who doesn't like artificial suspense? Moreover, I always had an escape route back to Canada. I finally released the Reddit app I wanted to work on for a very long time. It is still in early stages, but I keep working hard on it. I started a book series: The Stormlight Archive, got all of the audio books, had to spend audible credits.I got a nice spread for Thanksgiving meal including sous vide turkey, a spiced butter, roasted mustard brussel sprouts with bacon, roasted beets and carrots with maple syrup butter, pecan and cranberry stuffing, gruyere mashed potatoes and... sweet potatoes with toasted marshmallows on top? What is wrong with the U.S.? Then pumpkin blondies with caramel and vanilla bean ice cream for a nice finish. I like cooking if it's not clear already. And if you're wondering why I'll be eating marshmallows on sweet potatoes, ask my girlfriend.Also, in the continuation of 2020, I learned ~3 months ago that I have type 1 diabetes. It's just that kind of year. I'm now managing it very well, it's just a bit annoying. There is way worse, so I'm not complaining. Plus, you can get used to anything really. At least with type 1, you can still enjoy carbs with the right insulin amounts, so yay for still being able to eat at restaurants (when there is no lockdown)!With work, Reddit app, elections, books, I've been pretty busy this month and sacrificed some sleep. I was starting to get exhausted so I'll sleep a bit and get back to work on that app. Turns out you need to sleep more than two hours a night after all. I hate how I'm the last to know about things from that side of the family. I shot him a text asking why he didn't tell me and he said it was like 6 in the morning and he didn't want to text me then so he thought of waiting a few hours then got busy. OK, but when someone dies, I don't care what time it is. My phone also goes on DND from like 11 til 8 so it wouldn't have gone off anyway.Like what the fuck. The odd thing is, when it would do that, I would feel it building in my chest and then it would do it. The bitchy part is now I need fucking bump dots for the bitch. I ordered some, along with an Echo Flex because they were only $10 and it would be useful out in the kitchen. I saw one would get here tomorrow, the other sometime between the 30th of November and the 3rd of December. yeah well, I checked just to be sure, and it's the wrong way around. The damn Flex gets here tomorrow, when what I need now is the friggin' bump dots. Oh well, I can muddle through. I can at least start the bitch for like 5 minutes or something then time it with my phone and clear it. I can at least do that as I've done it today. It’s a dreadful book about political battles in the 1950s, it’s advertised as a historical thriller, but it‘s slow moving and it’s main character is an idealistic young congressman who gets swept up into struggles between other politicos. i hate reading this, but since i have spent two days reading i feel compelled to finish the thing. I’m glad it’s november because where i live, for the past few years we have had numerous wildfires. We haven’t been burned out yet, but the wildfires have come close to our area several times. When I say "philosophy is pointless", I don't mean any errors with a particular thinker or tradition, I mean the basic process of philosophical enquiry, from both a practical standpoint (as I said, my phd is a bit of paper with letters on that represents nothing but a gigantic waist of time), and from a more long term standpoint, I have just come to the conclusion that the very process of having a philosophical debate about any issue is in itself a pointless activity.This is because in any question, people will determine where they stand on that question not based on any argument proposed, or any evidence gathered, but on which side of the question their own emotions dictate they choose. The rational debate, the business of one side proposing a thesis, the other side examining that thesis and proposing a counter argument, is nothing but the steps of the game. The game will not in and of itself cause either side to change sides, merely continue with ever more complex propositions and oppositions.Hegel famously considered that the process of all debate was growth and synthesis, that one side would propose a hypothesis, the other side would propose a counter thesis, and the two would be fused into a synthesis, and thus rational argument became ever more rarefied and enlightened. Hegel got the first bit right, but "synthesis" almost never happens, people simply continue on whichever side of the issue they've decided to be on. Btw, I expressed this idea once to my professor, the one who served as my Phd superviser, and who is one of the most genuinely wise people I know, his response was: "that's a really interesting idea, you should write a paper about it" . so no, I am not interested in philosophical enquiry at all, because to me, and to others, the process is of no merit whatsoever. People will continue donning their uniforms and waving their flags for whatever sides of the little wars, or indeed the greater wars will happen, and jump on any band wagon, or flame wagon that gets rolling, and there's nothing to be done about it. I will also say that yes, the "people following their emotions", argument follows for what I have proposed here just as much, and of course if my Phd actually did some good or if someone had read it, I would likely have a better opinion of the hole process, but hay at least I'm consistent.So in conclusion, as Homer Simpson said, your best off just to "find a dead end, and chill out till you die!" Re: Monthly chat, November 2020 @Dark eagle, The reason I have been looking into agents is precisely because my attempts to get short stories published in various magazines haven't worked, and everything I've heard about self-publishing puts me right off, or at least, convinces me you need to be far better at self-promotion than I am to actually get your stuff read by anyone.With both agents and most publisher's I've seen, the problem at the moment doesn't seem to be that standards are ridiculously high, but that you either need to be recommended by the right people, or fall into a very narrow set of subjects and expectations, which don't relate at all to actual writing quality. Also, qualifications apparently mean bugger all (so much for me spending the time to get a doctorate, indeed this is yet another reason why I am not interested in discussing philosophy, because philosophy is at rock bottom an entirely pointless activity. I am used to rate of change or derivatives, I know that integrals are the oposite of that, But sometimes I try to solv them like I would a derivative because I am not familiar yet with the idea. They have furmulas with logarithms as well. So that has been for me this week. I haven't been mentioning my lady's name for the same reason I haven't tended to mention mine. Back in the early 2000's when I got online, I had this idea that even mentioning your first name online was a way to get in serious trouble and invite credit fraud, probable kidnapping and voodoo curses, so I started calling myself "dark", from the main character of a now abandoned post apocalyptic novel I was trying to write (he was a tiny, very sarcastic assassin adept in the use of knives).I have relaxed on the name issue, indeed as I said in the character names topic, my first name is actually Luke (which means that yes, I have endured a life time of starwars references!), albeit that these days I've been called Dark so long I pretty much consider it as much my name as Luke and actually respond to either. Interestingly enough, when my lady and I first met on that mailing list in 2015, she referred to me constantly as "dark", and wasn't entirely sure I was male for a while. So, all this is to say that yes, I've been rather avoiding mentioning my lady's name, although I do know some members of the community ran into her on Klango, or less commonly on the Zone as Belsong or Talea. However, I mentioned the Dwarver's comment in post eleven to her, and she was rather amusedly appalled, since yes, she is definitely female, my lady, my wife, and therefore relates to me as "Mrs. Dark", so is certainly not called John.Actually, her name is Leslie, and to any English people, no that is not like the Scottish TV presenter John Lesley, it's actually Leslie Anne .Okay, all of that sorted out November is proving to be cold, grimy, full of lockdown restrictions and actually rather tense. My lady and I have been on election watch for the last couple of nights since we're both frankly worried about what could be going on in the states at the moment. to distract ourselves, we've also been reading Stephen King's The Shining, which yes, is a bit of a weird thing to do, to escape a grim reality by reading about ghostly hotels turning people into raging insane killers! .Aside from both the election and the Lockdown, Reever, my guide dog was officially retired on Monday, and the representative from guide dogs turned up to take her harness. This is not unexpected, she's nearly eleven and we've known for the last year she's been slowing down rather, but it's still a bit of a sad event, though she'll continue to live with us of course. Other than that, not too much to report, since basically we've not particularly stopped lockdown, and now the country is going into more lockdown, so I've pretty much been hanging around, banging out more book reviews and getting back to games. For some reason, I've been in the mood for more relaxed things at the moment, so have been alternating warsim and cosmic rage, indeed for my thoughts on cosmic rage activities, see my topic in general game discussion. Actually, one fun thing about Cosmic rage is being able to do it while watching youtube videos or something else, albeit I need to try out more ship combat and get around to fixing my character some new armour and maybe a stun crystal, annoying though it is that I have to go through others for this. Also, having finished Game of thrones, my next series is probably going to be The Boys, since I do have amazon prime so can watch it. I was tempted to do doctor who season 12, however since on Amazon I'd have to pay 15 quid for it, it's just not worth it, considering that I can watch it for free when I eventually see my parents again, and quite honest as usual with Doctor who, the audios are always better anyway.My brother really wants to buy my lady and I a Disney plus subscription, but honestly I'm sort of struggling to see how I'd use it, indeed if anyone knows anything interesting on Disney plus I'd be interested to hear, since while I know they have all the Marvel films, I really don't care for superheroes, and while I've heard vaguely good things about the Mandalorian series, my lady and I are just a bit burned out on star wars after the train wreck of the last two films.I'm also having major trouble finding an agent or publisher, since apparently blind people aren't minorities, and not having an "edgy female voice", apparently makes you unpublishable at the moment, which is sort of ironic given that probably %50 of the characters I write are female anyway. Also, having finished Game of thrones, my next series is probably going to be The Boys, since I do have amazon prime so can watch it. I was tempted to do doctor who season 12, however since on Amazon I'd have to pay 15 quid for it, it's just not worth it, considering that I can watch it for free when I eventually see my parents again, and quite honest as usual with Doctor who, the audios are always better anyway.My brother really wants to buy my lady and I a Disney plus subscription, but honestly I'm sort of struggling to see how I'd use it, indeed if anyone knows anything interesting on Disney plus I'd be interested to hear, since while I know they have all the Marvel films, I really don't care for superheroes, and while I've heard vaguely good things about the Mandalorian series, my lady and I are just a bit burned out on star wars after the train wreck of the last two films.I'm also having major trouble finding an agent or publisher, since apparently blind people aren't minorities, and not having an "edgy female voice", apparently makes you unpublishable at the moment, which is sort of ironic given that probably %50 of the characters I write are female anyway. Re: Monthly chat, November 2020 Well I appreciate that people usually find my random thoughts amusing, although I admit with things as they are currently, I'm not really feeling amusing right now, however, to clear up one matter. I haven't been mentioning my lady's name for the same reason I haven't tended to mention mine. Back in the early 2000's when I got online, I had this idea that even mentioning your first name online was a way to get in serious trouble and invite credit fraud, probable kidnapping and voodoo curses, so I started calling myself "dark", from the main character of a now abandoned post apocalyptic novel I was trying to write (he was a tiny, very sarcastic assassin adept in the use of knives).I have relaxed on the name issue, indeed as I said in the character names topic, my first name is actually Luke (which means that yes, I have endured a life time of starwars references!), albeit that these days I've been called Dark so long I pretty much consider it as much my name as Luke and actually respond to either. Interestingly enough, when my lady and I first met on that mailing list in 2015, she referred to me constantly as "dark", and wasn't entirely sure I was male for a while. So, all this is to say that yes, I've been rather avoiding mentioning my lady's name, although I do know some members of the community ran into her on Klango, or less commonly on the Zone as Belsong or Talea. However, I mentioned the Dwarver's comment in post eleven to her, and she was rather amusedly appalled, since yes, she is definitely female, my lady, my wife, and therefore relates to me as "Mrs. Dark", so is certainly not called John.Actually, her name is Leslie, and to any English people, no that is not like the Scottish TV presenter John Lesley, it's actually Leslie Anne .Okay, all of that sorted out November is proving to be cold, grimy, full of lockdown restrictions and actually rather tense. My lady and I have been on election watch for the last couple of nights since we're both frankly worried about what could be going on in the states at the moment. to distract ourselves, we've also been reading Stephen King's The Shining, which yes, is a bit of a weird thing to do, to escape a grim reality by reading about ghostly hotels turning people into raging insane killers! .Aside from both the election and the Lockdown, Reever, my guide dog was officially retired on Monday, and the representative from guide dogs turned up to take her harness. This is not unexpected, she's nearly eleven and we've known for the last year she's been slowing down rather, but it's still a bit of a sad event, though she'll continue to live with us of course. Other than that, not too much to report, since basically we've not particularly stopped lockdown, and now the country is going into more lockdown, so I've pretty much been hanging around, banging out more book reviews and getting back to games. For some reason, I've been in the mood for more relaxed things at the moment, so have been alternating warsim and cosmic rage, indeed for my thoughts on cosmic rage activities, see my topic in general game discussion. But I don't think you get to have an opinion on a language, until you have learned it, and made some projects on it.meanwhile, on the other parts of my life, fanfiction.net is going downhil, whereas previous few months have only the problem of the reviews not showing up on time, now when the writers update, and you get the email as an alert, you find out that the chapter hasn't arrived yet... even after 24 hours.on the up side, my fanfiction seems to have some content built up, old and new, and I am thinking to take it to the AO3.IPL, which is equal to the US's local football leagues, except for cricket, continues, but just like this strange and horrifying year, the league itself has been strange. Almost all the matches are done, and yet which teams would qualify to the next round is still not clear. Re: Monthly chat, November 2020 On the other hand, for those of us in the southern hemisphere it's getting way too hot and I wish I could just go live in Antarctica for the summer. Our corona cases also went down, but then people got too relaxed and now we have a bit of an uptick linked to a few superspreader events. One was school kids having a party where over 100 of them caught it, and the other was in a tavern. The police keep shutting down nightclubs and stuff, but a lot of people don't really seem to care, people are still going to big gatherings with no masks or distance. So yeah we're definitely going to get our second wave at this rate. It would suck if we had to have another lockdown, the first one did so much damage that it's going to take years to recover from, I really don't think our economy can afford another one.
