@Bookrage, Waddle don't? that's funny. I amusingly enough made a reploid character called Tao, given the amount of characters in the Mega man x series who are named after Greek letters.I found that even in areas I didn't recognise, like the earthbound ones, I found mechanics I liked, like the question mark blocks, however there just wasn't a clear indicator of showing what in the games was actually unique and where to go, so I wound up playing four or so levels of basic monster fighting, with no real abilities to speak of to distinguish things, and even the newbie quests like the community service one seeming impossible. it's a shame, since the introduction with the nes and super punchout was absolutely fantastic, and I suspect if there is more to do than walk around, typing "kill monster, then using generic practices," this is one I'd enjoy.

I created a character in cleft of dimensions but not sure if I'm going to stick around. I created a kirby dancer called Waddle Don't (all one word without the apostrophe"  as a joke on the game series. There was this little red guy in the kirby games who basically had kirby's build but he had a huge honking eye in front of him and he could use the beam whip power. He was called Waddle Doo. Honestly, I'm not a big enough person to know a lot of the game worlds I would be visiting. I looked at a list of areas and don't know what a lot of them refer to.  I recognize several of the megaman, mario, and a couple pokemon ones. I also find it hard to manage my character and it doesn't hold your hand as well as some other games.  I've seen a few Earthbound and Zelda worlds as well but a large number of them just don't work for me. I think I might try this one or give it a pass, I haven't decided. Fandom games don't really usually work for me but this one is not without its charms.

the last time I was there, there were quite a few player playing and offering their help. so yeah. but honestly it's a bit boring at the start. it's pritty diku-ish yeah, almost like erion or ard wolf even with the same exp amount to level thingy. there is also a soundpack for mush but I think it is half customize for vi player.

@Firefly, it wasn't so much that the mud was difficult, more that I couldn't find what to do other than walk around and kill monsters in a very generic dicu way. Even the newbie quests seemed really obscure, and there was nobody else around I could ask for hints. Though as we did have the dev on this forum at one point, and the game had a lot of interesting looking mechanics and locations, I probably ought to give it another try.

I really liked the ethos behind cleft of dimensions, but I just found the quests %100 impossible, and ended up wandering around pointlessly. I loved some of the classes and the chance to fight off goombas and the like, and would've loved to get to some of the mega man and metroid themed areas, but I just wish the game had been a bit more welcomeing. Though maybe I should give it another try. for me, I'd love to see a full scale metroid mud, since the locations in the metroid universe are so well put together, with so many monsters, creatures missions etc, that they'd be perfect to explore and have missions in, whether on planet zeebs, sr388, or the research station from metroid fusion. Mortal kombat would also be pretty cool with all the extra world locations and so on, as well as the fighting system.

I don't know about the differences between necro pets and standard pets, since in Alteraeon, summoning pets as a druid is not too different to building minions as a necro. I'd be tempted myself more to distinguish games that give you permanent pet/companions which level up with you and maybe have their own equipment, and those which give you essentially disposable pet companions which only stay with you for a limited time and need to be summoned/created anew each time.Flexible survival has both, as I remember, as does Erion.

Materia magica has a couple of classes that are focused on mounted combat, and they have house pets too, but not sure how that works. New worlds also has a lot of guilds with pets in them. There is also coffeemud, which has a lot of spells which generate pets.

Let's see.Lost Souls has a few guilds that focus on raising or caring for an animal or extraplanar companion. Alternatively, spells or abilities to subjugate allies or pets. Weirdly enough, I enjoy the carrion bird bond even if it's not the strongest of pet options. the banshees, devil flies and other creatures do their job at pressure the opponent, and being an enchantmetn necromancer with exploding arrows of necromantic power and that hell's gate enchantment is fun (Pew pew). not sure which guild people prefer for that bond. Coven gives you a lot of free specs for related magic skills, but Shemsu isn't that far behind, and you aren't restricted by sex or armor worn. Kidn of wish I made my carrion a Coven, but my guild is functional in Shemsu.Erion has a few pet classes. a gaian druid/Archer beastmaster combo gets you a ton of pets with special abilities. You can even armor them. To pull this off in a single class, voodooist necromancer works too. Sometimes i wish I made my necromancer a Warrior necro, that inner demon thing from Warrior as an extra sudo pet for stuns and blocks would help too. Luminari has a few classes that have pet companion features. paladin can get a mount/ epic mount. nearly all spellcaster classes have access to some form of pet spell, or can eventually just learn Dragon knight/mummy dust for epic feats. Shadowgate is another D mud, has pet access with classes just like Luminari. My favorite is how the druid class works there. Lead your army of plants, creatures and elementals. Add Primeval champion to shapechange into a dragon.Asteria had pets from skill trees or some guilds. though since that's goign through a rewrite at the moment, not sure how that's going to work when it's done. Clok mud has some guilds with a form of pet access. udemis can briefly tame animals to follo them into battle (gather nature to beatup some fungal beasts). the Rook's parlour are the closest things to necromancers, and have options for raising dead corpses to serve them, or have their familiar turn into ghost mobiles, or control other nethric creatures temporarily. Outside of guilds, you can learn to ride on and train up mounts. War mounts will give you access to combat maneuvers at around 250 riding to trample and charge. As well, mounts will try to strike in combat, having a good rate of knock downs with their strike. I'll think of others that come up.

If I take on anything with swords, I end up getting hands or arms chopped off and being entirely useless, which...kind of means I can't kick ass. I'm not sure if I need to rethink my armor ideas and weapon choices, but it doesn't really matter what I use, I always end up with things cut off. Which annoys me. Cleared the dojo once and don't recall how I managed it really.

although I am not certain of the future, Conquestmud  has summoned allies, a golem companion and summoned pets are things you can get.. I'm not sure how much chance this one has at surviving, but it is there as another option.

Actually while I was playing, I was never hunted. The few PVP fights I had were by choice. Although admittedly I was only age 170 or so.It does make sense though, since compared to other muds there aren't that many things to do in terms of quests and such. There are tasks yes, but they aren't that many and a dedecated player can finish them and nothing else to do except trying out other builds and other classes.

I haven't played other classes extensively in GW2, so didn't know about those or at least I don't remember.at 10 indeed it's worth it, it has one of the most unique combat systems. You still use swords and claws and whatnot, but instead of typing kick, slash, kill and such traditional commands, you do things like, rs (right hand slash,), rw (righthand whirl), etc. Usually powerful attacks require a combination of those commands. Same thing applys to casting spells. You do things like rf(right hand flip) and other gestures. A combination of those hand movements results in the spell.Another fun thing about GW2 is the variety of ways you can customize your character's build. You have combat styles, talents and powers. I'm not going into details here, those things are more fun to experience them yourself. The classes are also really different from other muds.Damn, I'm getting a nostalgic feeling just by describing the mud, LOL. Oh well, Time to hop on and see what's the player base like nowadays.

@5:Actually, in GodWars 2 a lot of classes can have pets and mounts.Dragons can have dragon mounts, werewolves can have their own packs as do demons with the mentioned hell hounds. Mages can have elementals and vampires can have I think wolves and bat swarms.So GW2 is the mud with the most versatile pet options I have played so far. But it's also not very active anymore I think.

there are lots of options in Lostsouls as well, and for the first character they build for you to learn the game with, you start with a dog. It goes under the same sorts of mechanics as hiring mercenaries and such, but still there are a lot of options.

Most players wouldn't even know that pets exist, they're essentially cosmetic only and game play has no support for them.You can roleplay having a pet there though because it is a RP-heavy game. No actually it was mat, matt, and Mattt.The hosts loved that...I remember when I gave a prostitute an Ingles Missile Launcher and then punched her a single time, resulting in a permanent crater on that tile and my immediate and explosive death.And that time I hunted for a Mega Muta Chicken with my new hunt skill because I thought it would just be a big chicken which would give us extra meat for killing it, but then it turned out to be a massive armored chicken with dual chainguns on it's back and so we had to hide in the refinery and wait for it to leave because it had over a thousand HP.Or that time Mat healed me while I kept getting shocked by the security system on this one guy's dreadnaught, and I was hacking with all the best gear but it still took a bunch of tries?  Then we took it and killed the guy, because he'd been logged out for so long we thought he wouldn't care anyway, but then he came on like 2 days later and threatened to destroy us utterly so we just gave it back because we already had our own anyway.That time we finally got to use nukes was awesome too, when you took down that evil Eathling chik.And do you remember what happened when you typed "help dubstep?".The feeling of success when finishing up a warp drive, building a dreadnaught, hacking a super hard door, or creating a new robot was great, and so was hitting the material motherload or finding an amazing spot to set up a base.

No actually it was mat, matt, and Mattt.The hosts loved that...I remember when I gave a prostitute an Ingles Missile Launcher and then punched her a single time, resulting in a permanent crater on that tile and my immediate and explosive death.And that time I hunted for a Mega Muta Chicken with my new hunt skill because I thought it would just be a big chicken which would give us extra meat for killing it, but then it turned out to be a massive armored chicken with dual chainguns on it's back.And do you remember what happened when you typed "help dubstep?".The feeling of success when finishing up a warp drive, building a dreadnaught, hacking a super hard door, or creating a new robot was great, and so was hitting the material motherload or finding an amazing spot to set up a base.

Your gonna make me cry.God dammit I just want to fly my destroyer to an ocean world and harvest a bunch of fibers while fighting off hostile animals with my shock baton and pulse rifle.Or raid another massive  pirate moonbase with grenades, hacking open doors and lockers to get the cool tech inside.I want to fly over an abandoned settlement in my virtibird shooting old vehicles with my gatlingguns, then land and use my rocket launcher to finish the job.I'd even settle for sitting next to the refining furnace watching the phased solid metals being processed for half an hour.  Sobs.Why Haagpaiter, why!

I have this same problem as well, what's doubly sad is the dev had just put some great access fixes into the game before it went down.I've never succeeded at Empiremud either for the exact same reason, too hard to find ways to progress solo, though I probably ought to give the game another chance at some stage just to see if matters have at all improved.

Yeah that was my issue with empire mud as well, if you didn't have people it was pretty much impossible to progress past a certain point. It honestly felt like he was trying really, really hard to create a pvp kind of thing, and there just weren't enough people to make competition the way he wanted work; so it ended up just being two or three mega empires owning large amounts of land and everybody else fighting for scraps. If this is fine with the admin it's great I guess, but not really my kind of thing. I'm looking for something where it's possible to progress just as far solo as in a group.Yeah, I only wish I was able to code another wayfar. I am sadly not there yet however.

The next best thing is empiremud, if it's still up.  But empiremud has issues and is very grindy.  And fantasy, as well.To do what he wanted you have to be a really good coder and probably write the codebase from scratch as well rather than try to shoehorn it into moo.  But it is indeed a shame that it didn't last.

Given the choice, I'd probably play single player games too, but as muds still dominate the rpg experience, I like to see muds with an interesting world and quests that at least give some ideas of story and setting, indeed I tend to find muds that skimp on the interactable quests and  especially skimp on the text descriptions and atmosphere lose my interest even if the systems are good. Interestingly enough, several muds I've found have had amazing newbie experiences which are! exactly what I'm looking for, then as soon as I get spat out into the main game world and no longer have story and such to follow, I either lose interest or get entirely lost, especially when quests to progress get impossibly illogical, indeed some muds like 4dimensions, newmoon and diskworld I found particularly bad for this. The most extreme case is Avalon the legend livs where I absolutely love the writing, and the newbie academy is just so good, then once I finish I'm literally stuck with nothing to do. Criosphere and Frandom are much better for this since there are plenty of quests and stories kicking around, though Criosphere I found a bit more impenitrable sometimes in what you had to do to get what done, Eg literally having to give an object called "mission" to someone to complete a mission, and between those systems and some rather opaque clues on what to do to complete certain necessary tasks, I sort of got stuck. Frandom is far better, siince the quests are actually possible, and the admins care a lot about the game and are absolutely bent on constructing a world people can interact with and quests that are possible to complete. Asteria looked like it was great for quests, and quests that told  at least coonnected stories between it's npccs, if not a full narative, but combat was bloody difficult last time I checked. Tempest season likewise had a great progressive system which took you through a good few areas,plus some of probably the best combat I've seen in a mud for a long time, I really ought to chheck  back in on that one myself.

@Ironcross32 point. Believe me if there were more accessible videogames i would gladly play them if they were available on PC. Right now I'm looking through Steam to see if there's anything playable. But MUDS are easier to play on pcs, and I haven't yet managed to get to a place where OCR doesn't spit out gibberish.
